About CoronaMelder

What is CoronaMelder?

The CoronaMelder-app is the official Dutch coronavirus notification app, developed under the supervision of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. The app digitally helps the Municipal Public Health Service’s (GGD) with their source and contact research. The app warns you after you’ve been near someone who has coronavirus. However, the app is no longer active as many coronavirus restrictions have been lifted.

Features

- The app uses Bluetooth to see when you’re near other people who have the app. The app doesn’t use any personal or location data.

- The app sends you a notification when you've been near someone for at least 15 minutes who later turns out to have corona. That person must be using the app as well.

- Were you tested by the GGD and found to have coronavirus? Then, together with the GGD, you can use the app to send a notification to people who were near you during the period you were contagious.

- The app does not collect personal data like your name or email address.

- The codes you exchange through Bluetooth are only saved on your phone and automatically deleted after 14 days.

- App users cannot be traced by the app's developers, the government or other app users.

Backwards tracing?

Wow. I remember when privacy-preserving app-based contact tracing in this way was just an interesting idea. Nicely done!

Would it possible to implement also *backwards* tracing? By this I mean have CoronaMelder send notifications to people who were near the infected person on the day they were likely infected. ”Someone who was near you got infected so you may have gotten infected then, too”. This would better identify super-spreading events and clusters.

Lacks simple error checks and messages

- App does not seem to know when an update is available;
- it’s unclear why CoronaMelder cannot connect to WiFi sometimes;
- there should be a clear message where CoronaMelder is ‘actually’ active and what the timeline is for making it active in each area.
