    This App is a Dinosaur

I’m a recent Costco convert from Sam’s, and my wife and I did our first Costco trip last week. The store was so much nicer, the people were so much friendlier, the selection of products was great... and then I downloaded the app. I’m shocked at how bad this app is for a company as big as Costco. The app feels like it’s from 5+ years ago, it’s literally no comparison to the Sam’s app. It has no ability to tell you what products are in stock at a given store. There are tons of missing items, i.e. I’m in Costco and I search the Costco app for a product that’s sitting right in front of me on a shelf, and there’s zero trace of it in the app. There’s no Scan-and-Go functionality (where you can scan items on the app and pay without having to wait in line). The app literally just got the ability like 2 weeks ago to have an electronic version of your membership card so that you don’t have to carry your card with you to check out... Sam’s app had that years ago. I’m really disappointed in how bad this app is. Even though I really like the Costco stores better, if it wasn’t for my wife strongly preferring shopping at Costco over Sam’s, I’d switch back to Sam’s in a heartbeat just because of how bad this app is. Really hope they blow this app away and just start over.

    Purposely handicapped

I have memberships to both Costco and Sam’s. They both have strong and weak points. I love Costco, I like how they treat their employees, their food court is fantastic, it’s cleaner and I generally prefer their product’s. In terms of this app, it’s behind in every way and completely useless to anyone who does want delivery. I’m going to guess that most members do not want to overpay by about $3 per item to have things delivered. Most have a membership to save money. Comparing and contrasting, you cannot shop online and pickup yourself, you cannot scan as you shop and pay by your phone. You can’t even see what is at the club and see the correct price without a delivery markup. You can do all these things with the Sam’s app. Can Costco do all these things if they wanted? Of Course! But it’s not in their strategy. I’m not going to drop my membership by any means, but this app caters to the same people that UberEats McDonalds and Chipotle or maybe anyone that thinks InstaCart is a good idea. This app is pigeonholed and it’s disappointing and not for me.

    Costco IS NOT Sam’s Club!!!!

First of all, Costco IS NOT Sam’s Club. There is no scan and go feature, which I understand because not allowing this feature minimizes the risk of theft - and forces you to interact with associates at the store. Also helps keep jobs intact, which is something Costco as a company cares about a lot. I support Costco more simply because of their employee treatment. They wouldn’t even have self checkout if it wasn’t just a consumer demand. Yes, the app needs a lot of updates, but the true reason for the app is to have your membership card on hand at all times IN CASE you forget your card. Not to replace your card completely. Complaining about not being able to use it at the gas pump? Perfect solution - leave your card in your glove box and use the app in the store. Have issues setting it up? Go to the membership desk and ask for help. The app is easy to use, but does have a lot of glitches when setting up; however, if you have the patience to get help, you can get it done!

Photo app is terrible, slow, ancient, not user friendly

Let me start my saying, I love the stores, products, pricing and employees. But Costco definitely drops the ball with regard to their ancient photo app. I recently began to use google photos and was excited to load my pictures onto my Costco photo account which I’ve had for 13 years! I got through about 10 albums, and since last Tuesday (6 days & counting), I have been getting error messages or connection messages. It just won’t load any more pictures. Is there a limit? I found a different method to get my pictures loaded, but it literally required uploading about ten photos at one time. I’ve tried this on my phone and my laptop and using different WiFi. None work or they glitch half way through the upload. So frustrating. I am feeling like I need to cut the cord with the photo center and use one that has location, facial recognition and search properties. Costco can’t even download or sort pictures in order. Why? Am I missing something. I have the most current version and it doesn’t work any better in my laptop.

Will not send a password reset email

So, I heard Costco now (finally) allows you to add your membership card to your app. Great! I downloaded the app, tried to connect my account to it, was told my email and password don’t match. Hmm, that’s odd, but fine, “send a password reset email.” “Didn’t receive a password reset link? Send another link.” “Didn’t receive a password reset link? Send another link.” “Didn’t receive a password reset link? Send another link.” I ended up deleting the whole app, because I realized that even if I somehow managed to attach my membership card to the app, I would still have to go through the checkout line! Honestly, what is the point of that- merely saving me from carrying a single card? By comparison, I attached my membership card and payment options to my Sam’s Club app, and can either order stuff online to have delivered to my home, or go to my local club and “Scan & Go”- use my smart phone camera to scan the items I want as I put them in my cart, then pay from my phone when I’m done. No check out line at all! Come on, Costco. Get with the times.

    No features

So I can put my membership card on my phone. Who cares. I’m an executive member so my credit card is also my membership card. Costco doesn’t let me pay with my phone so app is useless. I am a Sams member too since one is by my house. I use Sams app to scan my items as I shop, put them directly into my large freezer/shopping bags, swipe pay now on app and show phone going out door. No waiting in check out line, no unloading items out of cart at checkout, I just load my shopping bags straight out of cart Into my car. Imagine all the time wasted at Costco waiting in line and unloading and reloading everything in cart at checkout. All this is eliminated at Sams. When I don’t have time to shop I do it all on line. Previous items I purchase are in a list, all prices are listed including discounts. I can shop and pay completely on app during any down time I have no matter where I am. Then I get notified when it’s ready and my hubby can go pick it up in their noncrowded pickup area.

    Just the basics

Just a basic app. Doesn’t excel at anything. I have both a Costco and a Sam’s membership. In terms of money saving Costco is the clear winner but in terms of app features and ability Costco loses. Badly. I go into Costco and there is no self checkout. I wait in line forever to checkout. At Sam’s I scan my items with my phone as I put them in my cart. I apply coupons or discounts on my phone. I pay on my phone. I show my phone to the person at the door instead of my paper receipt. Faster and easier at Sam’s. So is it worth the money savings at Costco compared to the time savings at Sam’s? For now it’s a draw. As my Costco gets busier and they refuse to open more checkout lanes, have self checkout, and allow me to checkout with my phone, probably not.

This “app” is terrible. It’s not even really an app, it’s just a wrapper around their already weak website. Somehow they even managed to break logging in, so that the iPhone’s fill-in-the-password feature doesn’t work. Even after logging in, pages that you’d already viewed still hide the members-only prices. If you were on the website you could at least refresh the page to get it to realize that you’ve now logged in, but with this “app” you can’t even do that. So they’ve actually managed to make it worse than using the website. Costco should be embarrassed and ashamed of putting out this cheapo app. The stores are great, their app should reflect that. The Sam’s Club app is miles ahead. It’s as far ahead as the stores are behind. It’s almost as if someone played a joke and reversed the apps. Come on Costco, it’s not the 1990s anymore. Climb into the present.

    Can’t log in

So, I just renewed an expired membership yesterday. Created a new online account and password, downloaded the app (in spite of horrendous reviews) tried to log in... wrong email or password. Several attempts, no luck. Requested password reset, didn’t come through, didn’t go to spam. Tried again, still no password reset, half an hour now. Went to the regular website and guess what? The email and password I’d written down works fine there. Even tried the app one last time, password still doesn’t work. Maybe if I’m ever able to actually get in I will improve the review, but it’s clear from other reviews that fixing bugs and updating their app is not a priority for Costco.

So I got a notification about the new promo & it took me to (apparently) an updated app, that doesn’t work, what a mess. This app was never great, but this is insane! The ONLY place that Sam’s beats Costco is the app. I can add in store items to my cart even if they aren’t on promo. But with Costco you don’t know what’s there till you walk in. I can plan my whole shop with the Sam’s app & I do. I then may use it at Costco to see who price is better. But as less than helpful as the Costco app was, it’s way worse now! I have to keep signing in, I cannot add things to my existing list, I have to create a new one, I cannot add things to my list as easily as before. Oh & after you view an item, it takes you back to the top to start over again & again & agony! I gave up, it just isn’t worth the stress!

No Way I’ll Use This App

Your App is woefully out of step with the times! Tried setting up an account to manage prescriptions and ended up feeling as if Costco was managing me! Here are the points that generated my disgust with the App: 1. Why do I have to enter name, birthday, address, insurance, etc. when Costco ALREADY HAS that information? AND have to enter it more than once? 2. Why does the App REQUIRE a shipping address that is to be used to send all my refills to, but DOES NOT provide the “Ready to pick up” option stated in the instore pamphlet? 3. Why doesn’t that same pamphlet have a telephone number to call when I have these difficulties? If a man can be put on the moon and brought safely back to earth, the designers/programmers (who always know what the consumer wants, right) make this App a more logical, user-friendly App?

    Terrible app

Was told at Costco store that they had me fixed up to get my ID card on the app, that wasn’t the case and I had to call and get it set up. The app itself is terrible- I log in and look at items for sale and it says ‘member price’ and wants me to put in my Costco card number. Why? I already logged in. I put it in and it asks the same question over and over and won’t let me view prices. I clicked chat and spoke with a rep who was worthless, she said ‘I’m not sure what’s going on’ , told me to use a web browser instead! Why did I spend all of this time getting this app set up if I have to go online to shop? She offered no help whatsoever. Why create an app that doesn’t work? Costco needs to hire a professional to make an app that works and delete this piece of garbage!

    MVP at this point

This should be listed as a beta app. Its missing many useable features. As others have noted, no way to pull up more than the primary card holder on the it shows a pic of my wife and her card when i use the app. Really bad user experience right from the start. Clearly secondary cards are in the system because the last 2 numbers are different so can’t see how hard it would be to give the option of the card to be displayed in the app. Also you'd get rid of a bunch of user grief if you published a feature backlog in your FAQ. Im sure the developers have one. Just be more transparent with your customer community.

Only good for price checking- sometimes

The app keeps asking me “verify” my account info. I’ve visited the membership desk at Costco multiple times and they check my info and see no flags to verify it but reset it anyway. It works fine for a few days and then the process starts over. It’s occasionally good for price checking but since there’s things in store not offered online, it’s not good for ordering for pick up or delivery since they don’t offer all products online. Usually the higher end brands and priced items are online while the deals are in store only. Even with the correct warehouse location and my membership working. Very frustrating. The app does not live up to the Kirkland quality we expect in the products they offer. Disappointing.

    What the app???

I was in Costco today and they were advertising download your Costco card on the app. Well let me tell you, this is not as easy as it may sound. I downloaded the app. When I opened it I clicked on membership. I was asked if I wanted to use facial recognition. I clicked yes. Then I was prompted to enter my email address and password. I assume they are asking for my Costco password and not Apple. I put in every password I have and none of them opened. Then I clicked on the person icon assuming this is member info. All I got was a white page. Everything I clicked on gave me just a blank white page. I have spent 30 minutes on this and I think I am done! This app needs a lot of work. Now I try to post this and every darn name I enter is taken. Really???

Have a Problem with Costco? Report Issue

Leave a comment:

Why should I report an Issue with Costco?

  1. Pulling issues faced by users like you is a good way to draw attention of Costco to your problem using the strength of crowds.
  2. We have developed a system that will try to get in touch with a company once an issue is reported and with lots of issues reported, companies will definitely listen.
  3. Importantly, customers can learn from other customers in case the issue is a common problem that has been solved before.
  4. If you are a Costco customer and are running into a problem, Justuseapp might not be the fastest and most effective way for you to solve the problem but at least you can warn others off using Costco.
