Writing a new review…

Skip down to the bottom for the quick version.

Eight years ago I wrote my first review for Asketch. Asketch was getting too many bad reviews in my opinion. It was a beautiful idea in it’s simplicity. Give people the ability to sketch on their phones. I was using it on a second or third generation iPod touch. I don’t remember now which it was. But I do remember that Asketch offered enough to really be creative. The limitations required that the artist experiment and find a way to do what they were thinking. As a musician I always like putting myself into situations where I’m extremely limited and see what I can come up with. This was simply a different art form that was doing the same thing and really forced me to expand my thinking because I couldn’t expand my tools.
Well, other reviewer‘s did not like this at all. They kept screaming that it needed to have this or that and it didn’t even have this other thing that they wanted. It was like they wanted a complete Photoshop or Paint program in their phone eight years ago. So my review was pretty angry against other reviewer‘s rather than promoting how good Asketch was.

Here’s all you really need to know…

It’s an excellent intuitive app. It has grown with iOS but still creates a mild challenge. It gives you a certain set of tools and challenges you to explore your creativity. It’s an awesome sketch app. Be imaginative!

Amazing for sketching

This is the best app for sketching. The marks are very similar to using charcoal without the mess. I have used Asketch for years and have tried many many others including the ones promoted by Apple. None get close to matching this one for sketching. With a limited set of tools you get excellent results and do not get bogged down in all the unnecessary options in more complicated apps. I hope the dev keeps Asketch working for many more years It is simply Exquisite.

This is ok

I like Asketch a lot but pls tell me how to make the brush thicker. I NEED IT TO MAKE SPOTFUR! Anyways, if you don’t have it, pls add it. I am trying to make cats and I’m like “I could draw better in paper”. Not to be offensive, I’m not trying to be rude (unlike SOME people). Welp, if you could fix some of that I would be very grateful.

I am Pearshine everybody! According to a quiz I am Jayfeather! My fav character!

One of my classic favorites

I am glad to see that work is still being done on Asketch. I have always loved it. I am sad to report that it seems a little flaky at the moment on my new M1 iPad Pro. I finally have a nice machine and an Apple Pencil and Asketch was one of the first things I tried. I will try reinstalling it and hopefully that will help. 😀

Easy to learn fascinating to use

keep Asketch simple. I barely use the color option. If you draw this is an great app. I show this to every artist I know. It’s not drawing exactly the lines I put down. There is a wonderful aspect that’s unexpected but fascinating. fun. And simple without a million menus and choices.

Thought it was missing a feature, but it only got better…

I thought, “What happened to the other draw tool?”

Then the helpful pop up hint taught me that you just use it with your thumb…

I was concerned that it was “different” but I think I’m going to like it.

ASketch ✏️📒

I LOVE Asketch! I recommend it! It is so easy to use! And I lov3 how it shows how to use it instead of just opening Asketch and being like “How do I use this??” Its a really good app! It helped my art skills SO SO MUCH!! If you want to download it, Do it! This is my opinion about Asketch and I think it’s AWESOME!

Needs options to make it work

In general, the idea behind Asketch is really good and it's mostly well executed. Sure, color would be nice, but it's not required. What doesn't work well is the pencil adjustment via pinch and zoom as well as the double-tap to bring up the menu; both problems have been pointed out by other reviewers. If you are using a stylus, having to use the fingers to change the pencil options is cumbersome. What's really getting in the way, though, is the fact that the menu pops up when you try to draw short strokes fast enough that the program things you double-tapped the screen. This is the real show stopper. There needs to be an option to disable this or at least designate a corner for double taps. Designating corners to adjust focus and line thickness would also be a welcome addition for those not using the fingers to draw. It also appears that Asketch hasn't been updated in a while. Is the developer still around?

Update: Latest version addresses the main problems I had with the program so far and adds some useful features. I can recommend Asketch now to anybody who likes to draw with a pencil. It feels very natural and is almost as smooth as Penultimate.

FEE

Hi there. App is good. It lacks of more features. One that would be important would be”settings”. Another thing is... I downloaded app. Used it. And now I see a charge of 2.99 plus tax. Why is this may I ask? It never stated an “app in” purchase notification when downloaded. And was this a one time fee or monthly?

Failure to Close

The Apple Pencil functionality is excellent. However, Asketch fails to close with the standard swipe. If I only used one app it would be okay, but the beauty of iOS is consistency of basic functions. It’s frustrating when basic controls are hidden and unresponsive.

By

Hidden tools = frustrating

The tools are hidden and you have to remember a bunch of gestures to get to them. Full screen drawing is nice and all, but it would have been better to have the option to keep things on screen.

Super

Hi there

One of the nicest applications i used . There is a disadvantage when you go to the tools by lifting the screen to the top Give him 7 out of 10

It has been updated in years purchase something else

I loved drawing on this application. The ink is amazing however I wish it had more features.

Wrongly charged!

AppAdvice advertised that app was on sale for free so downloaded for a look... However have just seen that a charge of $1.99 has been made. It won't break the bank but not happy with what I hope was a simple mistake.

Difficult to use

Simplicity doesn’t always mean less sometimes it just means the ability to organize.

Is a slider really less complicated than 3-5 size option buttons.

How is swiping a little undo button supposed to be easy?

Y so many gestures click tapping to get to one tool

Not good

Glitches a lot!!! Annoying :/ only so many things, can’t color good either. Don’t suggest!!!! But, satisfying to heroes who like sketching.

It Has a Place

As a Pro who has several other full-featured apps on my iPad Pro, I was looking for a very simple drawing app for use on my iPhone 6S. Since Autodesk stabbed users in the back and dumped their lite version of Sketchbook I haven't come across another app that served the same basic purpose.

this app seems like it will fill the bill. Very clean and simple. Only the basic necessities for jotting a quick sketch or idea (though more complex work can be done). The interface is very clever and efficient IF YOU FIND OUT HOW TO USE IT. Don't even know if it is useable with a stylus, but then I don't carry one with my phone, so that is not an issue. This is for simple stuff, executed with my finger, and it seems to do that very well.

ADDENDUM:
A recent update took away the ability to utilize a broad brush/pencil for color-filling areas. I also keep Asketch on my iPad Pro for quick conceptualizing, and the loss of the ability to color-fill areas really reduces it’s usefulness. It is now essentially a line drawing app, and the supposed adjustment of line thickness is almost imperceptible, even with the Apple Pencil.

ADDENDUM 2:
The developer has responded to my criticisms, and advised that adjustments are available for the program in my iPad’s settings. Frankly, I had never thought of looking there, as most apps typically have adjustments available within the program. Knowing about these adjustments helps restore some usefulness for me, though some of the available adjustments really need clarification as to their function. There should at least be a link to an instruction manual embedded within the program. If there is a manual I haven’t seen it. The two programs I use mostly use professionally are Procreate and Concepts. this app still provides a very useful simple tool. Thanks to the developer for “being home”

One of the best for sketching....but

...it ultimately lacks the basic functionality and options that I need to build on my sketches here.

I love Asketch and want to use it a lot more, but the lack of certain basic features often makes me put it down, so I'm writing this review in hopes that the developers read it, respond to it, and consider adding some of the basic features that could make Asketch an everyday thing for me.

My top three would be layers, ability to export as a PNG, or really any other alpha format readable by Photoshop, and ability to set document sizes so I can ensure what size/DPI I'm working at. If these features were in place- I'd easily give this the full five stars. Does anybody know if these pretty basic features are in the works? I'd even pay more for a pro version if they were.

Please Read

Good app. My problems are, the iPod Touch's touch screen is meant to recognize fingertips, so you can't use a stylus. My finger can't make precise lines. The zoom feature, well, you can't make a picture with many small things, such as a landscape, because when you zoom in, you don't have a grid, so it's hard to know where you are at on the pad. You must use the scroll bars on the sides to judge your location. If you sketch a line, then zoom in, the quality of that said line decreases and it becomes all "pixel-ly". If you sketch one line across, then w/o lifting your finger, and swipe back, it makes a shadow in the space between the lines. I like that. There IS a save feature. The sketching effect that Asketch makes is that of smoke. The screenshots displayed above were most likely done by a professional, or at least on an iPad. The easiest thing to make is a tree (pine that is). Maybe it's just me, with my iPod Touch, and my normal size fingers. It wasn't a complete waste of money, but yet it wasn't the best purchase. It is actually pretty hard to rate Asketch.

mmmmmm buttery & beautiful

What a great and simple app! You may think you can't draw… but this app will change your mind and give you the creative boost to jet-power your new-found abilities. Found it on a Friday and could not put it down over the entire weekend. Suddenly I had over 50 drawings, majority are legitimately artistic (everything else=learning curve) and astounding to me… mostly cartoon portraits that must have been stored in my brain… all different and surprising to see as they blossom from the brush/fingerstrokes.

Then I watched the demo video and realized I could customize the brush sizes and eraser opacity, so that introduced even more style and finesse to the process. Have also tried it on my iPhone, and obviously the drawings are a bit rougher due to finger/screen size ratio, but no less satisfying and surprising. I have used other Harmonious Mr. Doob-type drawing apps, but never with these fantastic results. Must give credit where credit is due: Asketch 's brushes and buttery ease make my finger drawings cleverer than I could imagine. I just keep murmuring… "am I this talented?")

I have showed my drawings to friends who all say " I didn't know you could draw" to which I must reply, "I didn't know I could either". It's as if the power was always there, and this app pulled it out of my fingertips onto the iPad.

So do not hesitate to plop down your 99 cents for the thrill of finding out what's waiting in your own fingertips…
