Crashes every time it says a speed for baseball. I have tried it at multiple baseball fields and it still crashes. I have reset my phone, deleted AthlaVelocity and reinstalled. Nothing works. Also I tried emailing them and got no response. Very disappointing and a waste of $12.

I’m 9 and it said I threw a wiffle ball 154 mph

AthlaVelocity glitched when I was exploring the settings so I tried to double click the home button to reset AthlaVelocity , but when doing so it read my fingerprint and used it for a $12 in app purchase. I do not even know what I bought and I am not happy that poor design lead me to lose $12 to AthlaVelocity I was planning on deleting.

AthlaVelocity asked me a zillion questions, made me watch an online video telling me how I tie into a bunch of devices I don’t use, and I still can’t find how to get the radar gun to work. The only feature not on hyperdrive with info was the email for help which appears to be down.
Waste of time.

I’ve had AthlaVelocity since IPhone 6. I’m now up to an IPhone 11. Same inaccuracy. My sun throws baseball about 70. He is 16. It registered today at 46mph with meticulous measurement for where to place the car hone.

You’ll waste your free uses when you’re not meaning to clock something. When you mean to clock something, it won’t work. Terrible app.

Not much to say. Followed the instructions. Inconsistent readings. I’m sure some may have had better luck. I won’t I don’t recommend. I just won’t use AthlaVelocity.

It doesn’t even see the puck, except for when it rolls back out of the net at 18 mph. Have to purchase pro for high speeds. Free version only goes to 40 mph. Complete waste of my time. Thanks a lot.

I tried this with my tennis serve. I was pounding serves and AthlaVelocity said the speeds were between 45 and 65 MPH. There is no way.
by Cappyzz
After using it for tennis 3x now I found out that if you serve closer to the middle the speeds are slower and not by a little. I’m doing pretty much the same serve and it goes from 60’s to 130’s when I’m close to the sideline. No where in the instructions does it mention this. So there is no real way to get an accurate read unless you have a radar gun and and try to sync up the speed and remember your serve location and camera placement. Even though it would be nice to have 136mph serve. Thanks for the ego boost mr. not so accurate app!

Mine worked at first it was pretty accurate but once I bought something everything started glitching out, either I want my money back or fix it

I love AthlaVelocity and they make it so easy to set up and get started Burt it needs an update bad. I’ve had the same version for four or five years and I haven’t had a single update notification. But still a great app for measuring speed. I use it all the time to see how I’m improving on in my pitches in baseball which I like to pride in.
Thank you!

Very consistent with good lighting. Sometimes does not recognize that its been purchased. Also, only good for about 25-30 pitches before it locks up.

When I first tried it I thought it wasn’t gonna work but it works perfectly, and it reads accurately! I love keep improving and thank you.

I’m sure everyone has looked for this especially for something like baseball and I can say that it’s pretty accurate so BUY IT it’s worth the money

When i first tried it out i thought it would be really bad and not work. When i actually started to hse the ball it told me the speed and even put slow motion videos into my camera so i could see my shot in slow motion this is an amazing app.

AthlaVelocity DooooDoooo

I suspect the actual maximum detectable speed on a 5s is about 70 mph. I placed it exactly in the best recommended spot with no movement in the background and it only detected 4 slow second serves between 65-69mph. It didn't pick up any of the many faster serves and even some slower experimental serves. I would say detection rate is about 10% and I have no way to test accuracy as I have no reference radar to compare to but it seems strange all detected balls were within 5mph range.
I'll have to play with it some more try placing the phone higher maybe and closer or farther from the trajectory of the ball but for now I can only give it 2 stars in the hopes that it will develop into something useful.

Have a tough time using this outdoors if there's any type of breeze blowing. AthlaVelocity tells me that there's too much motion going on so won't take a reading. If the phone is moving at all then you will not be able to get a reading. So it's not that often that I can go out on the field and bot have some type of breeze that will disrupt the phone.
It's very hard to read the screen on the iPhone after a ball goes by. The brightness of the readout numbers between the background is not very good. The best thing to do is link between two smart phones so you can have the reading in your hand as seen the ads instead of trying to read the one that's on the ground.

My friend set it up at Golden Gate Park with the Varsity Boys Gateway High School Baseball team. They threw pitches for over half an hour and it picked up virtually every one. Ten kids lined up to test their throws and then kept getting back in line. Most kids threw in the 50s. The pitcher threw as high as 69mph. Even a girl from the stands came down and threw in the 40s. Then one kid on the team, who wasn't even a pitcher, threw a 78 mph ball. The kids gasped and thought it was a mistake - but then he threw them again and again. He had no idea he had such a great arm. The pitcher said, "you should try out! We need more pitchers!" The team was second in the league at the time. It makes you wonder how many other kids out there have hidden talent and don't even realize it! Not sure why the other reviewer had a problem. Just be sure no one moves during the pitch if they are standing in view of the device. At 10x cheaper than the least expensive radar out there - this is a great app!

I downloaded the free version to give it a try. The max my daughter hit was 35. She has been clocked at 43-48 with a radar gun. Now I know that they say the max for the free is 40 mph. My expecations was to see AthlaVelocity do whatever it does when the speed is ABOVE the max(aka say "over Max", "Be blank" or just read the max number "40"). I got a few questions into their support to see why the free was only hitting 35 when my daughter has hit 45 mph. It could be explained, so I am not going to give this a bad review, but won't give it a great reveiw until I hear back from them .
It definately does detect the ball speed. Her change up was slower than her fast ball. I threw some slow ones and it read 22mph. I just don't know how accurate it is. It could be a good tool just to say "You are faster than that person" or "Your change up is X mph slower than your fast ball".
SO 3 stars it is. Until I hear back from them.
UPDATE:
I heard back from the company, within a few hours. If you don't send a friend request/email, the max speed for free app is 35. It goes up to 40 after friend request. When the speed is higher, it says "Greater than 40", but displays 40.
It is enough to for me to buy the full version.

I've used AthlaVelocity many times with my 11yo select player. If you set it up exactly how the directions tell you to, you will see how great and accurate AthlaVelocity works. It's also a great motivator. When my son doesn't want to work bullpen, I tell him i'll set up the radar and we can see if he can beat his fastest throw. That usually gets him off the couch. It's also great because I can see his fastball progress (he can hit 60 regularly) but when working on his change up, it's good to have a quantifiable tool to show him how much slower his change should be from his fastball. We aim for 45 mph and ensure mechanics are the same as the fastball. Without AthlaVelocity, it would be a lot of guessing about what it working and what isn't. Highly recommend the full app.

I saw an article on AthlaVelocity written up by Inc. Magazine and just had to try it out. I had a little pitching contest with my nieces and nephews while they were in town for a visit. To my surprise my 16 year old niece was able to pitch almost as fast as me! (her marathon running, gold metal athlete uncle) I definitely recommend downloading AthlaVelocity. It was easy to use and a lot of fun for my family. Who knows, maybe you'll find some hidden talent in yours…!
I can only imagine that users with negative reviews either didn't watch the setup tutorials or are trying to use AthlaVelocity in environments with too much background movement because it works great for me!

I don't know what the negative reviews are talking about, AthlaVelocity is awesome. I've used it on ice and my outdoor training area at home. High quality, shows a lot of information. Fun to use. Definitely a great training tool as well.
My ice hockey coach has a high tech hand held police grade radar gun for clocking in our shot speeds so we decided to put AthlaVelocity to the test and it didn't fail. If it wasn't exactly the same reading then it was within a tenth of a mph. Didn't expect an iPhone app to work so well. Highly recommended! For fun and for ice hockey training.

I got AthlaVelocity to check the difference between my fastball & off-speed pitches. Had some initial problems getting it to work without internet access, but Mike Gillam worked with me to get it sorted out. Great customer service! Took my IPad out to the local field to test it out. Warmed up at 39-45 mph and worked up to 77-79 mph. Not too shabby for a 61 yr. old grandpa. Off-speed pitches were 59-66. AthlaVelocity helped me find the best arm slot for this old body. Pitched a 4-hit shutout in my next senior league game. Thanx Mike & the team at Athla!

For anyone who has issues with the red light (most complaints are about this this), you can't hold this in your hand. You MUST set it down. Lean it up against your water battle. I have NEVER had a Red Light issue when it was on the ground. Nobody has steady enough hands to hold their iphone or ipad still enough to make it work. Don't make it harder on yourself. Set it down, walk away and let it do its job
