Kestrel LiNK (Legacy) Reviews

I am really happy with the Drop D3 for my needs. I am using it on backpacking trips to keep a log of temperature changes overnight. Having an app in my phone to visualize the log is great. Unfortunately, KestrelLiNKLegacy leaves a lot to be desired. It is very buggy. It has layout issues in various phone sizes. It has issues with crashing when data is cleared on the device. It has state management issues with some of the custom UI elements. I would give the Drop D3 five stars and KestrelLiNKLegacy one star.

I looked on the Kestrel web site to see if they published an API guide for the device. I couldn’t find one. I would love to build a custom iOS app for this device. How about it?

I love the D3, wish I could say the same about KestrelLiNKLegacy . Dashboard wastes most of the screen with massive black blobs only allowing 3 different sensor readings. A better layout would allow easy viewing of all readings. On my iPhone X, the icons at the bottom of the screen interfere with the iOS swipe up making them very difficult to access. There is only a single setting for imperial or metric views. There should be a setting for each sensor. For example I’d like to view temperature in Fahrenheit, density altitude in feet, and pressure in millibars. Come on Kestrel, you can do better than this!

Needs updating. Specifically for supporting newer devices such as iPhone XS and iPad Pro.

Developers: Unfortunately, if you’re going to offer an app for iOS devices you need to accept the fact you will need to maintain and update it. This is not something you can set up and forget it. The functionality of connecting my device to iOS devices was certainly a factor when making my purchases. Now that it’s become clear KestrelLiNKLegacy is lacking even basic maintenance and updates I am becoming frustrated with my purchase.

I really like KestrelLiNKLegacy but I am unable to export the data using an iphone or ipad. I am a high school science teacher and will be using some of the Drop D3s in class. My school uses Apple products mainly and I would like my students to be able to export and graph the data collected. Please update KestrelLiNKLegacy!!!

KestrelLiNKLegacy is an awesome idea. In theory, I can set the kestrel on a stand and not have to run up to it every time I want a reading. However, KestrelLiNKLegacy needs to be updated to be able to select individual units of measure like the kestrel can. I’m an Air Force weather tech and we take readings in knots. The current app only allows for imperial or metric which reads out as either MPH or m/s. Being able to individually select each unit of measure on KestrelLiNKLegacy would help out greatly! Please update!

I was not happy with KestrelLiNKLegacy. Then I downloaded the new Kestral app - which is terrible. I need only to know the temperatures in my two garden plots, and to track/plot those temps over time. That works on KestrelLiNKLegacy, over time. The new app is not intuitive and the wait for historical data is interminable.

It looks like the latest updates changed the UI to a fixed size that no longer accounts for different resolutions/aspect ratios. The interface looks absolutely terrible on my 6s plus.

An I-watch app so u can get your dope readings on your watch instead of having your phone out all the time. One in your pocket = another hand on the weapon. Safety first

Seems to work ok under iPhone 11 iOS 13, but took a few tries at first. Not sure why. Worked on the second drop unit right away. Never got my iPad Pro with the new iPadOS to export. Had to use my iPhone.

KestrelLiNKLegacy was never properly updated to support modern screen sizes. Previously, KestrelLiNKLegacy was simply stretched from the iPhone 5 screen size; now, it renders at the proper resolution but its layout is totally broken and buttons are actually hidden underneath misaligned UI chrome. Extremely disappointing since the Kestrel hardware was not cheap.

App is nearly worthless now. I love this device but you can’t get much from KestrelLiNKLegacy since you have to guess at most of the selections.

App is not designed well to work in iPhone screen. Hasn’t for years and there seems to be little to no improvement whenever it happens to get updated. Very disappointing.

The drop works well, the kestrel app is easy to use, but it crashes with the new iOS update, no export functionality.

This new update is just horrible! Before was nice and clean outlay and now they’re just black squares that look like we're made in windows 98 Paint with the temperature stick in middle frustrating! Can I can go back to the old version?

As much as I paid for my Kestrel you would think they would keep KestrelLiNKLegacy updated.

The UI format is outdated. Need a general update. Clumsy at best in Iphone X. Does its job well earns 4 stars.

It works but only at a very minimal capacity. The connection is good with my 5500 and I am enjoying the remote data, but KestrelLiNKLegacy is extremely limited on what you can do with the data. Mainly I am talking about the graphing page. The scale of the graphs are so wide that all you end up with is a really long horizontal line and no trending indication. Hopefully in a future update we will be able to adjust our graph parameters like we can with the meters themselves. I really like NK's products and can't wait to see KestrelLiNKLegacy made to match the quality of the meters. looking forward to rating this five stars.

KestrelLiNKLegacy does not read what's on my kestrel display. I need the wind speed to read in knots not MPH.

Unable to edit the dashboard. Screens look weird, lines aren’t straight in window divisions.

Useless chart for pressure. Contacted Kestrel, they stated it would be fixed 10 months ago.

A number of the controls are directly underneath the new “home button” at the bottom of the screen, so when trying to use them, KestrelLiNKLegacy is closed — which means disconnection from the Kestrel device, and having to start what you were trying to do from the beginning.

Everything is also sized incorrectly (“squished” from the right side in, as if it were stretched from intended use on a smaller screen).

Export functions also do... nothing; Not even an error message.

Update, Oct 2019: Still really terrible.

No granular control over units, No dashboard editing.

Since this is the only way to interact with the “drop” series, it really needs more attention.
