This is really the only game in town. A well written, easy to navigate app with useful and appropriate commentary. Pulls the so many many hundreds of current and recent steels into some order, so you can begin to understand what makes a good steel (why is lowly ol’ 420HC the chemical basis of many 21st century super steels? How about 1095 and D2, why are they still around? Read on). Not perfect, and necessarily incomplete. We wish Zvi would issue a true 2.0, we’d gladly pay for that!

So, when buying knives, many throw the steel types of the knives they are selling around as if they know what they are talking about. NOT! I pull up KnifeSteelCompositionChart , never saying a word about such a comprehensive app I am reviewing and figure out wether I buy or walk. Most times, I am walking away. I also, in my own way, determine a price I am willing to pay for a knife post KnifeSteelCompositionChart review. Sometimes, depending on the seller I may engage him with some verbal knife fighting, and get my price. Looking for updates to keep me looped in. Thank you kindly.

This is a great informative app that breaks down all the steel alloys that you use. Whenever I get a novel steel I look up the markings on the internet and if I am not familiar with the alloy I look on KnifeSteelCompositionChart. I would love if the heat treat information was on KnifeSteelCompositionChart also

Great reference app.
Is it possible for a future update to allow us to invert the colors? Or have a more eye-friendly “reader” type version.
Thanks again.

This is extremely useful so that you know the composition of the steel you are getting. I never believe the hype, unless it matches the facts, in which case it changes from hype to facts. “High carbon” becomes high carbon when the composition findings confirm that. Never buy a knife without knowing what it is really made of. It’s too bad razor blade makers don’t tell what steel they use, much less it’s composition. So far, I have found just one that does that.

The information it provides is great the only thing I wish that it contained heat treatment information on the specific steels other than not having that I love it

Only app if it's kind I know of. Very useful source of information on a wide variety of knife and tool steels. Layout and search functionality is good. Bookmarks make it easy to reference what varieties of steels one has in their collection. Simple, effective and well executed.

KnifeSteelCompositionChart is a wealth of information about different steels. My only qualms with it are the lack of standardization when it comes to the write ups of different steels, and the lack of intro information/definitions. The latter of the two issues is fairly easily solved with google though.

I got KnifeSteelCompositionChart mostly because I collect knives and keeping up with all the steels and new alloys being used out there is really challenging. I wasn't sure if I'd use KnifeSteelCompositionChart very often but I find it comes in handy more than I thought.

As a retired machinist & life-long knife junkie, KnifeSteelCompositionChart provides plenty of useful info when I'm knife shopping. Not sure how they make money on a free app but it would be worth a buck or three to me...especially if they added more info (sometimes it's a little light in that regard).

In eight years being on an iPhone, this is the second time I have ever reviewed an app. With so many proprietorial names out there, is very difficult to keep up with them all. KnifeSteelCompositionChart often tells me that when I find a good deal, the metal usually isn't all that great.

If you been collecting for years or new to the hobby. This is a great app to tell you about the knife steel you may be purchasing. Granted there is many things that make a great knife besides the steel. The apps seems to do a great job of keeping track of the new and old steels out there.

Invaluable, exhaustive compilation of information on various steels right down to their recipes, often including material characteristics of the steel, and comparisons with similar or alternative blends. Well organized and void of any non-essential functions, it's got it where it counts—fast responding, easy to read, effective and efficient. Good work!

Great for double checking steel content, and when provided, the comments are a welcome and valuable. I’m hoping the comment section is expanded regularly. Would love to see more heat treat info, history, pros/cons info, etc. Regardless, I highly recommend. Always use sources to double check when necessary.

I’ve no technical qualifications to judge—let me admit that—but I have found this very helpful, better that scrolling through bookmarks to various steel manufacturers , and I haven’t questionable information when researching further. The information is cross indexed well. This is a super reference tool.

My “GoTo” reference for knife and tool steel composition! Dead useful. I ran across a typo last year, sent developer an email with a correction, and he got back to me the next day, then posted the correction the day after that! Talk about responsiveness!useful. There is nothing like it for anybody interested in knife steel or tool steel composition. It makes comparing different steels fast and effortless.
Way to go, ZviSoft!

As a professional blade sharpener, I’ve come to rely on this outstanding tool especially when working with collectible blades, or exotic blades carried and used by international adventurers or High Dollar Beauticians!
I do all of my work manually... no belts, grinders, wheels, motors, etc so knowing what to expect from the blade is critical to the outcome of the job.
Thanks for this great tool! I would gladly pay an annual subscription for it!!

Thank you for making KnifeSteelCompositionChart!

This is the first app I've rated on my own free will, with no pesky pop ups asking me to. It is a fairly comprehensive encyclopedia of different knife steels. Some descriptions may not be as in depth as possible, but the sheer fact that they're all in one place, easy to search, and informative earns KnifeSteelCompositionChart five stars in my book.

If you’re a pocket knife enthusiast like me or a knife maker. This is a great app to have on your phone and too consult. Instead of searching among a plethora of forum post, KnifeSteelCompositionChart tells you what you need to know! Easy to use and navigate too!

KnifeSteelCompositionChart is excellent for those of us interested in steels/knives.
If you don't work as a metallurgist, and I don't, KnifeSteelCompositionChart will help you find what a steel's characteristics are, who makes it, a bit of history, etc.
