SPIEGEL Kiosk Reviews

This is a decent app that I have used over many years now.
After the upgrade to 13.2 SPIEGELKiosk will only display a few articles. Swiping to the next article, one gets a white page with the „Artikel wird aufgebaut“ message that never goes away.
The only way to resume reading is killing SPIEGELKiosk and restarting. The article in question will now be displayed right away. The behavior of not displaying correctly is repeated after another couple of articles. Clearly very frustrating. Please fix this.

Being German (although living in the US) I originally subscribed to the paper version of the SPIEGEL. Now of course I subscribe on line and would not be without it. Although time does not permit reading every edition weekly, I always go back and read what interests me the most. I also value the Book Reviews as I am frequently in Germany and stock up on recent literature.

Excellent App. I’ve been reading Der Spiegel for almost sixty years, for the last four digitally. As I often read on iPhone, I would love to be able to “ spread”’photos open with two fingers, in order to get more details.

SPIEGELKiosk is a good compromise between a paper experience and pure online media. DER SPIEGEL provides excellent perspective either way, SPIEGELKiosk is especially convenient for those who live abroad and may not have quick access to the print edition.

SPIEGELKiosk gives you the opportunity to read the Magazine „Der Spiegel“ everywhere and at any time you want .

I love Der SPIEGEL but don’t like a lot of paper collecting in my home. I can now retain a SPIEGEL library right on my iPad.

Brilliant as ever, ideal if you live abroad

So far, there are only a few magazines in SPIEGELKiosk store that really work for me. Wired Magazine is one of them. Der Spiegel is another and it does a good job at mirroring the print magazine while allowing for implementation of additional story-telling mediums. The format may not please everyone because its format is derived from print but Der Spiegel is not an entertainment-digital-lifestyle-fashion magazine first and foremost: You buy it to read the articles and expect decent quality journalism, which it lives up to. They even manage to breach the "iron curtain of Apple" with regards to "nudity" and political commentary. You'll see the occasional naked breast(s) with regards to German life and sexuality articles. Has Apple finally come to their senses with regards to what can and can't be shown on the iPad?

If you read the print version, you'll enjoy all the new features that Der Spiegel for the iPad offers. Subscriptions run through the application with direct debiting of your German bank account (Bankeinzug), credit card or billing by mail. The one potential catch: If you sign up through SPIEGELKiosk for the test subscription, you'll have to decide whether to continue after the 9th issue (11 issues are offered at 29 Euro). Issues after the test subscription are billed at 3.65 Euro a piece.

It really is beyond me how ill-advised (I won't say Dummkopf!) publishers are in this massive and revolutionary shift to digital. It would take someone with the intelligence of, say, a five-year old child to recognize the opportunity here: begin selling the digital edition at a very compelling price (like $1.99 per issue). Do anything to develop a loyal following of your publication--everything should focus on raising a massive readership at this phase (Yes, I do own a Der Spiegel t-shirt!). Only after you achieve this do you adjust pricing to an acceptable profitability. The only thing Der Spiegel is doing at $5.00 an issue is to alienate its fans.

Der Spiegel, are you listening? Please get someone under 45 to run your company, someone who understands contemporary business principles!

SPIEGELKiosk is ok, easy to use, the bugs in the earlier versions are fixed.
But - there is an overzealous approach to copyright and some half-cooked features that keep it a frustrating experience.
There is quite the hype about a spoken version of the magazine. At closer look it's maybe a couple of articles per issue. How difficult can it be ....
There is a function to print an article - but for some funny reason not all articles can be printed.
What for ?
I pay for it - why can I not take a copy and file it for future reference or to remind me tomorrow that I need to do something about it.
First of all - I buy the print version as well, so I actually can just scan this. But that's rather ridiculous.
And I am sure somebody somewhere is putting the content in the web anyway.
Guys , really, if I pay for it I should also get full access.

After moving to the US I really missed reading the SPIEGEL as the international paper subscription is way to expensive. Now I'm finally able to read it again. SPIEGELKiosk is responsive and the interface works well for me. Pricing is in line with other magazine apps and will hopefully go down over time - however I don't blame publishers by trying to start with a higher pricing..
