can't connect to LEGO robot inventor hub

When the LEGO hub is bluetooth connected to a Macintosh or PC it is installed as a virtual serial device. I can then connect to it with standard terminal emulation software. However the bluetoothLE app on iOS just shows it as a device with no services. Not useful. Why can off the shelf OS software figure this out but this specialized bluetooth app cannot?

Buttons app does not work. Terminal does work, but I need button pad. HM - 10 module disconnects whenever I attempt to enter button app. Wasted much time. Developer does not respond. Can not get refund from Apple. Wasted money. Using newest Arduino and iOS 12.
Have found ArduinoBlue App which has many more features. Requires a library to be added (and learned) and is FREE.
