Many features but hard to use

This is a nice OSM viewer with a lot of customization. You can tweak just about anything in OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate including map styles and layout of the navigation screen. The downside is OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate is very confusing because of all these features. And it seems to be missing some basic ones. For example you can only quickly show the POIs in some category, eg “fast food” or “restaurants.” If you want to search them by name, for example if you want to search the nearest McDonald’s, it sometimes takes a minute to show the results even though I only have one map loaded. Another problem in general is OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate is not very reliable. Today I was setting up my new iPad Pro and couldn’t download maps. It seems like the download needs to start over if it fails in the middle. And I’m not sure why it’s failing - my connection is gigabit and quite reliable for everything else. I also believe OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate is not quitting in the background. I paid for the subscription to get hourly map update. This is pretty nice too. It auto updates any offline maps you have and it seems very data efficient.

Please read this

I am all about privacy and security.
I deleted my email, social media, and other accounts that just freely gave my info to any one that would pay.
I removed any app that ties data to my persona, and I also created accounts and installed apps that respected user privacy.

I have pretty much found replacements for everything, except for maps, banking, and gaming.

When I came across OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate and saw it has a 4.5 star review, I literally gasped and got so giddy. Then I opened OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate and tried to use it.

It went down hill, and fast.

After about 5-7 clicks OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate completely freezes and I have to close and reopen OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate .

Adding a favorite is a joke. Such a difficult process. Click one wrong place and you have to tap back into the favorites, but guess what, that’s like 5 taps - time to close and reopen OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate now.

Navigation isn’t too bad. It’s either 3 seconds ahead or 3 seconds behind. For example, a turn was coming up and I knew I needed to take it, the gps said I already took it, then stopped at the stop sign. Then continued on my way. A few seconds later, I just then turned.

The speed detection is pretty funny. It feels good to be as fast as a jet plane, but I don’t think it’s accurate. Even though OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate says I’m traveling at 257 miles an hour, my car says I am going 35.

The apps layout and placement of icons, while I could get used to it, needs a lot of work. If you have a settings icon - every setting needs to be there.

Great for cyclists.

I found this map to be awesome for cycling. Once you put in your directions you can view lots of details about the route that are not available in other maps like google and definitely no Apple. Things like the type of road surface. Asphalt, concrete, dirt etc. Max and minimum altitude, along with elevation gain and loss plus a detailed elevation profile. Unlike google maps, you get this info in the car drive mode and not just the bike. The map is very customizable so it may be frustrating to use initially, but if you spend the time to learn how to use it, you’ll be rewarded with getting detailed info not found in other maps. I gave it 4 stars because they could have made the navigation around the map a little more intuitive to use.

Getting there!

Still needs work (public transit, less confusing interface, faster search and routing), but OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate has come a very long way in a very short amount of time (you are all doing great!)

Depending on where you are OSM quality can vary. If you’re from a place where it’s not great, consider trying to add your favourite places to the map! It’s actually a lot of fun (kind of like a weird sort of geocaching) and a great public service.

Not good for navigation

I had high hopes for OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate and it’s great for some things, but the navigation features need a lot of work.
I wanted to plan a route but when I try to add points it keeps snapping back to my current location.
I tried turning on the “simulate route” feature hoping it would allow me to plan without snapping, but instead it snaps and simulates that I’m driving the route. Imagine that... I guess I’m just stupid to think it was something else. All good though, I just turn off simulate and start over, right? Wrong. It continues to simulate even after I kill the navigation and start all over and turned off that feature.
For map downloads and gpx overlay it works, but for now it’s too buggy and cumbersome for anything else.
If it becomes more intuitive and less buggy then I’ll happily revisit and expand my usage.

GPX Tracks are not imported properly...

It was with great excitement that I installed v4.1.1. The new UI and menu organizations were a long time in coming and much appreciated. So, why only three stars? OsmAnd-iOS still does not import GPX files with multiple Tracks properly. OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate combines all GPX Tracks into a single Track and considers the each of the individual GPX Tracks as "Segments". An absolute misinterpretation of the GPX XML. OsmAnd-Andriod doesn't have this issue - they got it right a long time ago. Why it is taking years for the iOS version to get this fixed is mind boggling.

Missing one thing.

Great navigation, but i just wish it could announce directions out loud while I was driving. I don't know if adding a CarPlay app is possible, but that would be pretty cool. Just need it to announce, and it would be perfect!

EDIT due to developer response: turns out it was just messed up and it can announce! absolutely lovely app guys, keep up the good work!

Excellent and wonderful

One of the most important features is that you can use it without the Internet and easy to use and maps contain all the required data about an experiment for a year and I recommend using it.

Great maps, needs more location photos.

This map took is really good! It uses Open Street Makes, so it provides all the map features you need without the stalker-like constant tracking you’re going to get from competitors.

The only complaint that I have about it is that I wish there was a way to submit photos without needing to sign up for the third party “mapillary” service that requires a user account and therefore doesn’t respect user privacy.

I took some photos to add and improve the system but mapillary means that I won’t be able to easily upload them to the service.

Great map, though, but this limitation means that there are a photos of locations than there could be.

Really in need of better search functionality

Most places and addresses are not in the database. Searching among the few that do exist is slow and tedious. If I could just type in the address or business I want to go to, and have it quickly pop up, OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate would be much more usable for me. Google maps and Apple Maps are miles ahead in this regard. 3 stars because of the data privacy.

Great idea, but not ready yet.

I’m in a relatively suburban area with some more urban areas around me and have experienced a lot of trouble finding anything more specific than cities in general. The routing code/algorithms need work, as it will routinely recommend criss crossing over itself and doubling back over itself instead of taking the most direct/efficient route. I’d very much like to use this for privacy concerns, but for me and my area it’s just not usable at this point.

By

horrible maps - counterintuitive

I had high hopes for OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate for offline navigation and map searching based on Michael Bazzell and Rob Praxman recommending it for privacy. I can’t find multiple legitimate street addresses and businesses in search. When I drop a pin it’s getting the street wrong. Trying to navigate with it is totally counterintuitive. I purchased maps but wish i hadn’t. It might work for road-trips for general instructions or for rural areas but for the big city its awful. Trust me just stay away.

Exactly what I’ve been looking for

I travel across 6 states in the US to see my family regularly OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate is exactly th I have been looking for its easy to use if you have any technology sense... I highly recommend if you are planning a across country trip this is must have app

Do not get this app if you are wetalldid

Not for idiots. Just use wayze mental manlet. If you have more than one brain cell and are not lazy you can figure this out. No real restrictions as far as I’ve found. Very nice app keep improving and allowing open source maps.

By

Fantastic

This is exactly what I needed. I can create custom GPX files, email them to myself, load them in OsmAnd and tada, I’ve got a turn by turn navigation in my car. We like to do street tours and this helps tremendously.

Google, Apple, Sygic, Etc. This is how it’s done.

This app keeps getting better

I have been using OSM for many years. It was good then and continues to get better now. It is the best app out there. Thank you for keeping OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate going and making it better.

Please fix not being able to zoom into maps on iphone XR.

I bought OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate and still cannot do so. All you have to do is use the OsmAnd offline maps and try to zoom in with two fingers pass the detail at the city level. After I do that the map goes blank. When I zoom out again I see detail at a larger scale. I am on the latest build of IOS and OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate .

Great map, add carplay?

So far from using this map it is great to use! The navigation default setup is particularly clear and shows speed, time of arrival, etc very clearly. I'd appreciate it even more if carplay support could be added.

By

Great maps. Not like the big guys.

It’s based on open street maps, so there’s no big tech intrusions and data mining.

What is this

OsmAnd maps was recommended by various blogs for use in Beijing as Google Maps is blocked in China. I downloaded OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate and paid for a map of Beijing but I can’t find the map in OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate ! Can only see the option to open it when I un-install and re-install again, but even then I can’t find a single thing using the Place search. I’m not just talking a regular address, searching freaking TIANANMEN SQUARE returns zero results. Very frustrated and annoyed, waste of money and time :(

Cannot recommend

After installing, OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate prompted me to download a world outline map and my city’s map. I did both. It took a while, but they downloaded. While I see the world outlines and lots of point data for cities, there are no roads, even in the city I downloaded. Now, when I search for cities it cannot find any. It cannot find roads or streets either. So in the end, there are no roads and the search doesn’t work. How is this usable?

By

Not so good

Nowhere near as good as droid version. Downloaded a state map and everything is in Spanish. Delete same map, attempted to redownload and it tells me I have reached map limit. OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate can’t figure out my default language and uses scam math. I found another nav app that downloaded the US (with POI and other extras) quicker than this one gets one state. Thumbs down.

By

Looks good and works fine

I like OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate. It does everything I need it to do, and I like using it for doing before and after comparisons of places that I’ve edited in OSM.

By

Terrible UI

This might be a great app functionally but the poor user interface makes it hard to tell. It keeps telling me it’s recording a trip even when I try to stop, the red recording icon never goes away. These are simple basic UI tasks that have been around forever. App deleted.

By

Bug

there are some bugs in the latest version in iPhone 6

By

Dense. Shallow frustrating learning curve.

Any map that wastes hours of time just to get a basic grasp on the basics is not going to be any easier on a bike in crowded places or confusing routes. Info overload, remarkable confusing UI and difficulty finding concise help is making this a definite no go. Too bad. Could have been useful if they concentrated on designing it to be useful.

By

OSMAND for iPhone

All together a great App. However, The learning curve is just steep. It took me a good year year to learn it. But I enjoy it now and didn’t cost a lot of money.

By

Did you abandon OSMandDVR?

Because we really need an update for that app.

Also, the domain you had set up for that app has vanished.

If you are going to abandon that maybe you can unlock the premium features for free?

By

Love this map but the App needs improvement

I really love OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate but OsmAndMapsTravelNavigate need to be improved on memory using and in-app elements layout in iPhone X and XS(Max) such as buttons.

By

Too bloated for iPhone 5

Has potential but crashed several times while just playing with the settings, let alone trying to navigate anywhere!
