Unbelievably Bad

this app advertises their Global Transfer feature as the thing that separates them from the competition. It took me three frustrating months to get my US and French this app accounts set up. This Friday I initiated a Global Transfer via HSBC to get money into my French account to pay my rent. It appeared to work and I got a receipt in HSBC . On Saturday I contacted this app because there was no evidence of the pending transfer. They told me that the feature is in HSBC but it doesn’t actually work. You can only make Global Transfers via the web site. So.... why do you have features in your app that don’t work? That’s worse than not having the feature at all. It’s misleading. Reading the reviews here I just noticed a review in February that says the same thing. this app has known about this problem for at least six months and the feature is still there not working and misleading people?!?! I’m closing my US account. I’ll just use TransferWise to move money from my US Chase account to my French this app account. this app seems to mark up the exchange rate anyway, so using TransferWise costs about the same.
Very cumbersome and frustrating

My family and I have banked with this bank for over 25 years now. The service has been acceptable but HSBC is extremely cumbersome to use. Constant lagging and distracting refreshes when you scroll up and down to see your transaction ledgers. I have two other banking mobile apps and they are leap years ahead in terms of functionality and convenience. Also, this "update" doesn't even include Face ID. Every other financial app has it (Coinbase, Mint, Chase, etc). Actually, the programmers of the bank should try out the above mentioned platforms to see what it means to provide convenient and usable solutions for their clients. As of now, it almost seems as if the intention is to disuade clients from relying on the mobile app. As a workaround, I have gotten used to loading up Mint in 3-4 seconds to check my this app account.

Welcome to the land of codes you don’t have and cryptic descriptions of unknown electronic banking elements. A confusing mish-mosh of poor design. When I finally resorted to the website, I connected to direct chat. After 15-20 minutes, I was still on with the assistant as I repeatedly confirmed my non-receipt of an email I was supposed to receive containing an “electronic banking number”. I asked, several times, how to obtain the PIN that is required for registration in the event you don’t have the “electronic banking number”. There was never a response to that question but I assume it’s somewhere in the ether along with the answer to my question. No way to access HSBC so hard to go much beyond the one star (and that’s for the cool looking logo).
Anxiety Every Time I have to deal with this Bank App
2022-08-30
by Whossat
One of the things in life that gives me anxiety is dealing with this bank’s apps. We have one for USA and UK and for each country they require a new digital security passcode each year. Each time we talk to someone in another country with lots of background noise and since we have to have help on our mobile phones, the call is so disconnected with frequent interruptions in words spoken both sides. The call takes around 45 mins. It’s a headache. Also the bank uses so many different terms for their codes: User Name, Password, Memorable Answer, Security Key Pin, Mobile Bank Application Passcode, then 2 Security Questions. So much so they need to be written down anyway! I don’t have this trouble with Wells Fargo nor Barclays.
HSBC doesn’t work. We enter all the security info and when we click the log on button, it flashes and then nothing happens. I’ve tried deleting and reinstalling. We’re tech savvy enough (one of us works in tech.) We should have checked HSBC ratings before opening this account. This is by far the worst banking app. The interest you earn is no where near worth the time and effort you have to put in to get it to work, if you even get that far. You have to get past several security questions and verification steps, which would make me feel safe, but HSBC not working and its clunkiness leave me with little faith in the actual level of security. It feels like a lot of fluff. The website is also too much trouble. We were not able to add a spouse to the account via the website like all of our other banks. Looking into other options. I’ve never left a review in HSBC store, but this was so bad I felt it was necessary to let this app know before we close our newly opened savings account
Worst banking app I’ve ever had to use

Terrible to use. Download updates while running, which I didn’t know was allowed on HSBC Store. Bugs regularly found, like no bank accounts available to deposit a check on, or check photos won’t upload with no error message. The transaction log doesn’t show the name of the store unless you tab on it, which makes it difficult to use. The transactions take 24+ hours before showing up. “Linked accounts” shows my only account but with a different balance than the “Balances” tab. And I haven’t even looked into anything else than the basic features one would use HSBC for. Give me a simple, readable, useful and up-to-date transaction log, and let me deposit checks reliably.
The worst mobile banking app ever!

by MoudaTn
This is definitely the worst mobile banking app I’ve ever seen. I have apps from 9 others financial institutions, 5 of them are much smaller than this app, and yet their mobile apps give an excellent experience. HSBC does not even allow to make a payment. You have to use the website, or send a check, or call them. But you cannot initiate a payment from HSBC . It also has a lot of useless features. But in addition to not being able to make a payment from HSBC , this is the slowest app I’ve ever seen. Apps on iPhone 3 run faster. I am extremely disappointed. The only purpose that app serves is for you to check your balance and your transactions but that will take you some time because it is slow. Closing my account soon.
Wow!

Opened a direct (online only) savings account and regretted it immediately when I found out bank-to-bank transfers can only be done via desktop website. Not good. The online-only idea doesn’t work with the inability to manage money on the go. Plus, the online registration process was cumbersome. I had to reset my password twice. When I finally completed the painful password reset process online, I was given a confirmation ID and needed to call the 800 number or chat online to activate the password reset. Wow.. just wow! Why every single thing has to be done by an agent? I would think when you can authenticate yourself via security question and other security measures, you should be able to complete things online/independently. Very disappointing for a global bank like this app.
Love the card. Canceling due to the App

I have the cash rewards card from this app. I really liked the 1.5% back on everything and 10% bonus on the cash back offer. It took me over a month to receive the card...then you can’t just sign up on HSBC . You wait for your Pin to arrive in the mail. Then, don’t even try to set this up on your phone. You can’t. Literally. You get stuck at the security questions lol. Ok so I literally had to call customer service to find out how to pay my bill from the desktop website! There is not a”pay bill” option! Crazy. It’s under “view details” and that takes you to another website. All this to say... great cards but HSBC is... man... HSBC is really bad lol. Website is really bad as well. Went with Discover IT cash back. Love it. Top notch.
I was pre-qualified for the credit card. I applied online and made few purchases, and then, suddenly, I cannot use the card. I made calls, shock kept me on hold for more than one and half hours, the representative told me to send in the material which can verify my address. I did. Then, another call on hold for more than hour, asked me questions and verified the transactions and I was told the block has been removed and then, I still cannot use the card. Another call, long hold, told me to wait for another 24 hours. Another call, long hold and I was told that my card was closed for some reason! What the hell! This is the worst credit card and experience I’ve ever got! Wasting my time! During this time, no one call me! I used the live chat and made four calls! Shoooot! You deserve zero star!

IS THERE NO WHERE IN HSBC TO MAKE A PAYMENT??? It’s like they haven’t improved HSBC since apps became a thing. And I can’t add a bank account to pay from HSBC , I have to log onto a computer to set that up. An app should be all encompassing, including adding a frickin bank account so I can pay my balance. Then when you log into HSBC , it’s either EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to find where to go to make a payment, or it doesn’t exist on HSBC . Either way, I haven’t been able to find it. I got this card for the 0% APR on balance transfers... ok great. Got my card and they only gave me a $750 limit....... what am I supposed to do with that????? I used this card once, and never again.... I’ll leave the account open and just not use it. Thanks for nothing this app.

You HAVE to install this garbage app, even if you only want access from say, your home computer. Installing and setting up is a joke, and the mobile app doesn’t even let you make a payment from your checking account. Oh, sure, it’s super easy to use the this app card to pay other bills, if you go through more of the stupid hoops and crashes, I presume. They make it more than easy to rack up a balance on the card/account, but are more than happy to make it ridiculously enigmatic to simply make a payment... I wonder why? Such a shady tactic that I can’t wait to transfer my balance to s better card/bank. What a joke, and you find out none of this until you actually open an account with them. this app=slime ball company, I highly recommend you go elsewhere, to a more reputable and customer oriented credit account.
Awful App and Bank

I used the this app mobile app for the past year as part of its promotion to get bonuses in setting up new checking, savings, and CD accounts. I am fairly tech savvy and was able to navigate the cumbersome account and app set up, but the problems I am outlining here made me recently cancel both HSBC and my this app accounts.
Setting up HSBC and my accounts was unusually difficult. There were far too many steps, delays, and odd rules that made me waste many hours online and on the phone. HSBC is very slow, and cuts you off so quickly you cannot even send messages on it for help. It is often down completely, and is “clunky” to operate, even when using the latest operating systems, iPhones, and super fast WiFi.
I had no problems working with the staff and management of my local this app branch, but the company’s online services and phone-based help are almost useless.
this app’s corporate executives and staff based in Buffalo, New York, and its global executives based in London, seem to be not just incompetent, but also scandalous. The company has been found guilty of numerous fraud, money laundering, and other charges, and seems to be engaged in endless litigation. A quick web or wiki search about this app is all that is needed.
Stay away from both HSBC and this bank!
Worst app of all time

I work on a digital product team at a bank and HSBC took over 3 hours and two customer service calls to work properly. Very poorly crafted.. my local credit union does a better job! Almost considering canceling and moving my accounts elsewhere - that is how bad it is. Problems: 1) Getting access alone is a nightmare. You need to receive multiple different codes first (forget two factor, this is like three factor authentication) - and they don’t make it clear that one of those codes expires shortly. 2) If you like me have trouble clicking “log on” despite using the right passcode it may be because you are using your phone’s generated passcode but not manually entering it. Apparently it only takes manually entered codes (the should clearly state that). I had to call three times to figure this out. The first two customer service reps I spoke to did not know this. The third figured it out.
This is the worst banking app. I always run into issues, wether it is that when I click “deposit” it freezes or keeps loading and I deposit it agin to find out that this app has charged me a fee because, according to them, I tried to deposit it twice, or simply when I click deposit it keeps on loading and I doesn’t go beyond that so I have to reboot my cell because there’s no other way to log off. I use Chase and Santander and they are sooo easy that I don’t know why I keep on depositing checks into my this app account other than it’s my primary account. They are, also, the worst when it comes to customer service. What it used to be a great bank has gone down the drain in no time. Don’t bother with HSBC . Deposit your checks through the ATM. And good luck with that too since sometimes the ATM doesn’t recognize the amount nor the check and you are at the mercy of waiting for business hours to deal with their lovely tellers.
Unbelievably bad! Nothing works. CIO needs to get fired!

I’ve never come across an app that across the board doesn’t work. The design seems fine but nothing is working. As a new premier customer, I’ve just spent 3 hours trying to register my new account-in vain!...I’ve lost count of all the tries. the buttons simply don’t seem to respond and work. It doesn’t respond and then tells you it has timed out. After countless tries when I thought I had finally set it up, then the Touch ID would take me to a home screen that would freeze. I uninstalled and reinstalled HSBC which then caused another suite of issues and I can’t get back in although i know my password is correct. HSBC doesn’t respond, etc.
Absolutely nothing is working-the list of facts to share is countless. It’s truly beyond belief. I’m technology savvy. HSBC does not even deserve 1 star. Completely useless! I don’t understand how a reputable bank like this app is tolerating such a bad app from their IT dept...
Worst Banking App I’ve ever used!

by GTS25
I have several accounts with multiple banks. Decided to get the this app GOLD MC because of offer they sent me in the mail with a decent APR and no Foreign Transaction fees but HSBC is a deal breaker. I’ve had the account for a week now, everything set up, Touch ID working but I CAN’T SEE ANY INFO on my transactions!
What is the purpose of this ancient UI with no REAL TOOLS to assist me with my banking? I’ve used the card multiple times already and even set up some of my bills for auto pay using the this app MC and I can’t see any of my transactions...NONE! One week later app STILL shows no transaction history. Where is the REAL TIME crucial transaction detail a consumer MUST HAVE access to in order to budget themselves properly and most importantly monitor for fraudulent activity?!
I honestly I’m thinking of just closing out the account and going with Barclays Bank. If I don’t hear back from anyone on this forum or don’t get a reply regarding this review I will take my business elsewhere.
Terrible user experience!

by EnnGeeKay
This is by far the worst consumer banking app I have ever used. Set up itself is so painful... I have no issues with the need for proper authentication but the this app app is just not user-friendly at all. The screen to screen transitions are so clunky. So often the “cannot contact this app server” messages show up on very stable Wifi connection.
Apart from this, the built-in limits on “deposits” (yes, deposits - not withdrawals or transfers!) are so impractical. Cannot deposit a check with more than $5000 amount! What am I expected to do? Tear a check in pieces and deposit portions of it? If the bank takes time to get the check cleared and the make the funds available (understandably), then why not allow the deposits? The ultimate killer is the monthly limit on deposits via app! Cannot deposit checks totaling more than $10k in a month! Why??? This in an era when banks are trying to become internet banks and want more and more transactions to be online and via customer self-serve modes, this app doesn’t seem to be getting it.
HSBC Employee Review
2023-12-15
by Disappointed & Offended
As a customer and an employee at this app, all I can say is that this bank needs to really step up their game or at the very least fire its online/mobile department. HSBC is completely counterintuitive and unreliable. Simple transactions are so much difficult to perform than needed. As a banker, I suffer through all the unfinished software that they keep trying to push out. You don’t know how many times where I’m 95% into opening an account for customers and the program crashes; I have to apologize to the customer and then ask them to come another day. It’s utterly embarrassing. When HSBC fails, not even the customer service can help you out. Half of the time theyre suffering software issues as well. I am sorry for the people who choose to bank here. The technology is backwards. Honestly this app USA is nothing compared to the one in HK.
i'm upgrading my review to three stars, but it's hard to separate the quality of HSBC with the quality of the banking services. this app is jettisoning my account to Citizens and their customer service has been very slow and not too helpful. So it's hard to not reflect poorly on HSBC , when you want to use it for help and help comes slow. They removed their email correspondence and replaced it with chat, but the chat people are very limited in their communication skills and in the range of services they can handle. You wait a long time only for them to tell you that they're going to have to wait a little longer to speak to someone in a different division.
I NEVER write reviews, but…

by Benjamin.blunt
I NEVER write reviews, but maybe, just maybe, this app will get the picture if I do. I’ve always been a fan of this app, but HSBC is TERRIBLE. Typically, in the past, whenever I’ve had an issue at the bank, I’d call just once and it’d get fixed, but not with HSBC.
When it first launched it worked great, but since December of 2020, I have been unable to make a payment through HSBC (I keep getting Error “RDP 400”). Additionally, overnight, HSBC is now improperly detecting my phone’s connection so it will only say it is connected to the internet via a cellular connection.
I’m a software engineer myself and this is shameful. You keep having a customer call-in who says they can’t make payments? Determine the root cause because there are likely many more with the same issue. As a side, the new payments provider that they have switched to is pretty terrible as well. The old provider used to send every single payment I made via EFT. The new one can’t seem to figure out how to do the same with my primary credit card, so I have to wait 1-2 weeks for payments via paper check to be sent, received, and processed (Thanks this app).

I have been using the mobile banking app for some time. It now asks on launch if I am me if I am "already registered"!
Can't get any further AND can't generate security code to log on online. Hopeless design!
Ended up locking my account.
After a 45 minute wait to get through to support I was given the choice to re-set security credentials either BY POST or by visiting a branch 12 miles away that is CLOSED.
Very angry at poor service.
