Let’s see how this goes

I just opened up my this app accounts & downloaded Marcus . I like how quick & easy everything was to set up & transfer. The design/ layout is super simple. I like that because I don’t need many functions. I just want the money to sit in there. My only issue is that you can’t name the accounts. I have them separated for different things and this would have been a big plus. Hopefully, that’s the only issue but we’ll see how this goes.

Update****
You can name your accounts now! I’m very pleased because this has been my only issue. It’s a wonderful app and I’ve never had a problem with it. Very simple and easy to use. The recurring transfers allow me to save without thinking. And each account can be set up individually which is a plus because I have multiple accounts for different things and prioritize them differently. It also has a pretty comparable interest rate for a HYSA.

They are the best

I got a pre approved loan offer and when I tried to complete the application my credit score was hard pulled which affected my credit and I was requested to upload my ID card which I tried to upload on their website/app but I keep getting an error message that they have a technical issue. I called and all their representatives couldn’t find a solution to how I can upload my ID to process my application. They said it’s a general problem and they don’t know how to fix it. So this app literally messed up my credit without allowing me complete the application. I regret ever accepting their offer cos the hard pull will remain on my credit report for 2 years for no reason. They don’t have email to reach them. They only have representatives who have no knowledge of the company.

Update: My issue was satisfactorily resolved . Thanks

couldn’t recommend enough

absolutely love everything about this company and app. the second the this app checking account gets released, i’m going all in and having everything with this app.

The only constructive feedback i would love to be shared with someone at this app, is to allow more access to the investing side of this app. it would be nice to be able to see an individual ETF’s performance over the last few months, but the only option in this app is the prospectus for that ticker. Ally for example let’s you see news about that specific ETF, past performance, and the top stocks included in that ETF so you really know what you’re investing in. Would love to see something like that from this app in the future.

And lastly, would be cool to add benchmarks when looking at performance, like US Market, or Int’l Markets. Just an idea. keep up the amazing work

Worked great, now giving me issues

Marcus worked great from the first time I downloaded it until about two weeks ago. Now every time I login, it says I have to confirm or update my information in order to continue. However, every time I click ok and it takes me to the website on a web browser, there is nothing there and I can’t fix it. So it just stays on this screen and I can’t do it anything. I deleted Marcus and redownloaded it and it worked for a day or two, and now the same thing is happening. Not sure what the issue is, but would love it to be fixed!

Please bring the monthly line graph back!

I switched over to this app because I used Clarity and loved it. It’s basically the same app with some extra features but this app has some differences graphics wise that make it not as useful as clarity. The monthly spending graphic used to have a line graph where you saw the trajectory of your spending for the month based off your current spending rate. Please bring the line graph back!! The pie chart is the same as every other money tracking app I’ve used, in fact this one is worse because it’s not even different colors to see a quick representation of what you spend each month, it’s just different shades of each color which is a cool gradient but not practical. If they fix both of these, I’ll be happy to use it. If not, I’ll try and find something else or just make my own line graph.

Marcus is Great..:App needs work

Insight is great but Marcus has some bugs that need to be fixed but once they are I think it will be great and my rating will change to 5.
1. Trying to link external accounts on Marcus I select the institution and then it brings me to screen to select my bank instead of bringing me to the screen to enter my credentials for the account I want to link. Because of this it keeps linking my bank account multiple times.
2. The view and breakdown on Marcus and the actual website are different. Certain accounts show up in one spot on the website and a different spot on Marcus . My net worth is also different online than it is on Marcus . This should all match in both places.
3. I started to try to link account through the website since that’s they only want I can get it to link properly but on certain institutions I keep getting an error
4. It is not easy to report bugs or get support all I want to do is sent a bug report in I don’t need to spend time talking to customer service and I could not figure out to chat through Marcus …I’m thinking it’s not supported or I just couldn’t find it. I found it on the website but not Marcus . But again I don’t want to chat with customer service I just want to report a bug.

this app Insight seems like it will be a very useful tool once I can get all the account set up properly.

Chunky, needs refined.

Coming from GM rewards app by Capitol One, Marcus is unrefined. I log into half my screen of a greeting, some quote, and a desk lamp picture. For what? Can’t even turn on the lamp. There’s no “widget” to add for IOS users so can’t just swipe over and see current balance. Wanted me to go digital statements so I did no big deal. Then it lets you know payment is due but not what is due. Is it $1, all of it, a minimum? Just gotta guess and go with it. On Home Screen you can see balance and a number but no indications that you can click it for more details. You can click the dollar sign at the bottom (one would assume $ may give more details etc, nope! Just takes you to a new screen with the exact same 3 line items from home page, just w out the desk lamp etc. So there can really can be some improvements made but it is a decent start.

App is awful & service is no good

I’ve been a this app client for a while, but my experience during this pandemic has been terrible. I’m unhappy because their app is not functioning properly on my phone, not to mention their rates are not so great anymore. When I log into Marcus I can only see the balance on my account. I cannot see the transaction history. I’ve contacted this app multiple times about this issue. The first rep I spoke with told me it was my phone that was the problem. THAT’S NOT A GOOD ENOUGH ANSWER BRO LOL. All my other banking apps work just fine except for this one. I don’t think my phone is the problem. The second rep I spoke to said that he escalated my case to their tech department and that they would reach out to me. I’m still awaiting a response weeks later... not great service.

Bring back the line graph!

I used whatever the version of Marcus was before it got sold to you and loved it! I switched over when it became this and was very disappointed because some of the things that had been most helpful for me understanding my spending habits had been taken out. The biggest of which was the line graph that showed how your spending was progressing over the current month and it a had a shadow that showed your average spending over a month to compare.

Please bring this back! I have not been using your app for almost a year because of this problem, but I want to come back because your categories of spending make way more sense than on Mint. (Namely you have groceries and dining/drinks as different categories and Mint combines them, which makes no sense). Please bring back the line graph

From Clarity to Marcus

If you were a Clarity user or looking for a money app, here’s what you should know about this app. Clarity was a fantastic app for minimal budgeting & spending overview. When they got absorbed into this app, there were a few changes.

The main differences is that Marcus keeps the general UI and categories from Clarity But other than that, most of Clarity’s overview panels like credit score overview, active notifications, and more nuanced budgeting functions have since been hidden or redacted.

The main difference seems to be that this app upped the security of Marcus , which in turn creates less active notifications and more login steps to see your general overviews that you typically want to reference quickly. They also seem to be pushing for the use of their other services (which probably gets seen in Marcus ) and has the ability to access all that this app has to offer as a banking business. It’s a shame since Clarity was so convenient, company neutral and user friendly.

Bottom line: if you’re a this app customer, then Marcus probably works well for you. If you’re coming from Clarity or want a quick & organized way to see your general economic habits, then you may want to consider other apps outside of this app.

A few ideas for spending tracking

Overall love Marcus - clean look, easy to use, and makes it easy to see how my balance has changed over time. I just have a few suggestions on the spending tracking features. Why do I need to manually enter one number for monthly income? You can see my paychecks come in, so i would like to see Marcus calculate my average monthly income (taking into account the last 3 months or something) and base the snapshots on that. I would also like to be able to split up a transaction for cases like where I paid for an Airbnb or dinner and am getting paid back by a bunch of people - so I want the $100 that I paid to be factored into my snapshot/ metrics, but not have my spending get totally skewed by a $600 transaction.

Inaccessible outside of the US

I don’t want to leave a bad review but I would like an issue to be addressed. I have a funded this app account and frequently travel internationally. When abroad I cannot open Marcus at all and can only log in to the website from my laptop using a vpn. I keep getting a message like, ‘thank you for your interest in this app but only Americans are allowed access to this service for now.’ I find this frustrating and nonsensical since many Americans travel abroad and may still want to check on their accounts. Even with a vpn on my phone I cannot open Marcus while abroad (primarily in the Middle East). I would like to be able to rely on using my phone since I don’t always have my laptop. It seems possible to limit the applicants to Americans while still making the website/app operational from foreign ip addresses.
Otherwise Marcus is great, and I’m sorry for leaving a one star review, but wasn’t sure how to let the company know of this issue.

No App Support

I’ve had an account with this app for about a year. I opened my account with Marcus and did all my transactions with ease up until a month ago. I’m no longer able to login with Marcus . I type in my login in credentials and an window pops up indicating this app’ products and services are only available in the US. When you close the window it goes back to the login on screen. It never advances to my account. It’s stuck there. My VPN is set to USA as always. This window used to pop up before and I would close it, then it would take me to my account. I’ve contacted customer service and no one can resolve this. A ticket was put in, but I have not received a response, but was also told by customer service that there’s no guarantee I will be contacted. I hope Marcus developer can fix this. This is really an inconvenience not being able to use Marcus on my phone. Please fix it.

Banking App with lots of Promise

It’s about as basic of a banking app as it gets, which I like. My favorite part is the greeting with some inspirational quote that makes you feel like you’re a millionaire when you’ve only got a balance of $5.00. The financial wellness part has a lot of promise, but it needs the ability to actually itemize and add separately whatever extra income or expenses can’t be tracked by the account merging as opposed to adding them manually and not knowing what income or expense you’re adding. It also needs to show a negative income number to demonstrate your deficit if it exists to help you better understand how much you’re overspending rather than going to zero net income if you are indeed overspending.

App has issues

I often log in and get a message saying they are having “technical difficulties”, and then proceed to use Marcus normally. Something is not right with that. Also, I’ll be in the middle of reading one of the apps financial resources articles, and Marcus will log me out right in the middle of reading the article, and then I have a hard time finding it again. The financial resources articles needs a search function, and, if someone is reading an article, which means they are actively scrolling the screen every so often, don’t log them out!
Lastly, I had a message saying I had a pending application when I in fact, did not. Messages like that should disappear once the application is no longer pending.

Issue Logging Into App

Recently, Marcus started asking to verify contact info/profile before allowing access to account, but it doesn’t offer a way to do it... only option is to press the “okay” dialog box which then opens up a desktop web version of my online account. Then a small box appears at top of screen asking to open the this app app to continue. Press open app and it goes back to asking for verification of account profile before allowing access. Stuck in an endless loop...😐 other than this recent issue I love Marcus and its simplicity in navigating my account. Easier than going online via webpage. Please fix access issue thanks.

Snapshot

The Snapshot section on the mobile app is broken. It never refreshes from month to month. It says I’m -$22,000 because for some reason it listed a $1000 deposit into an investing account like 20 times as a transaction.

The mechanics work fine on a desktop and I love the look and feel of Marcus . Doesn’t have tons of adds and isn’t crowded with a bunch of other stuff. Still, since there Marcus is pretty slimmed down and only has 3 or so major features, it would be nice if those features actually worked.

They REALLY need to make it so you can edit transactions. If Marcus duplicates or lists tons of duplicate transactions, there’s no way to edit them.

Great app

I love Marcus—the pie charts are helpful for visualizing where my money is going and I like being able to adjust my spending categories accordingly in case they weren’t correctly placed.

One improvement I hope to see in the future is the ability to split transactions into “me” and “others” because I will put my card down at dinner and get paid back by others which is calculated correctly dollar-wise, but distorts the amount that I actually spend eating out because my part of the bill was only $35 but I paid over $100 for the whole thing.

Technical issues constantly

I can’t remember the last time I opened Marcus and didn’t get a warning screen pop-up that Marcus is encountering technical issues. It’s tolerable given the rates they pay are top of market, but you should completely write off Marcus providing any value. Similarly, and infuriatingly, this app will not link successfully with any other apps you might use like Wealthfront, Personal Capital, Monarch, etc. the data will be pulled but will break every time if you are linking via Plaid. It is because this app does not support open banking, which is really surprising and kind of a legacy approach. Surprising for an institution like Goldman.

Will definitely leave the second someone offers a better rate so all of my other apps can start working again.

Just missing one feature...

Simple, intuitive, and easy to use application. All relevant information (e.g. # of transfers, APY, etc.) is clear and easy to find. Perfect app and service for those looking to keep their emergency fund or short-term savings independent from their day-to-day banking.

The ONLY feature I wish they implemented is the ability to define a name for your accounts. I currently have 3 accounts in my app, each with money destined for different things. I’d love to be able to name each account as such. I believe this would greatly improve the user experience given the purpose of this savings product.

4 stars to an otherwise nearly flawless app.

Good & Simple, but lacks Face ID login

Good & Simple, but lacks Face ID login.
Also, should allow user ID that is not an email address. Overall all it does simple tasks.

Joe Kish   2 years ago

They kept calling me saying they didn’t get all my information. They did it like four times. And then they never called me to tell me if I received the loan or not. I had to call them. I canceled with them. Not a good company in my opinion.
