Tandem was decent at first, but as soon as you need to make simple changes it immediately becomes unusable. Split summaries aren’t saved and past splits aren’t editable, so if you make a mistake or otherwise need to change a past split, you’re stuck doing that math by yourself. God forbid you change your phone number at any point - this app will never even pretend to help you. Without your phone number, you’ll have to delete your account, make a new account, have your partner delete your presence in their account, have your partner AND send a new invite just to lose prior data anyway. All because this app won’t let you change your number in app!! If you try to contact customer service like I did, good luck. They say they’ll message you back and send their response via email, but I never heard anything from them. It’s been weeks at this point.
TL:DR save yourself the trouble and use one of the many other apps on the market. Maybe you can even find one with actual customer support!
We loved Tandem at first it was so easy to connect accounts and swipe our expenses to be split. Unfortunately after using Tandem almost a year we have encountered many glitches. Our connected accounts are constantly saying they have been disconnected and when we go to reconnect it acts as if it has always been there. Expenses show up 2-4 times on the screen making it impossible to know if you’ve already added it to the split section unless you jump back and forth constantly which is equally difficult due to how long it takes to load screens. We have been double charging each other for countless expenses as they just duplicate themselves. I used to tell everyone about how great Tandem was and am taking my words back with all of them. After our most recent split we will not be using Tandem anymore.
Tandem has made my partner and I’s financial journey MORE frustrating than before. First of all, both my partner and I tried emailing the this app contact email and got no response, so I wouldn’t rely on that if I were you. Secondly, if someone in your partnership changes their phone number, they have to delete their this app account and create an entire new one. Thirdly, it’s way too difficult to view the history of your “settle-up’s”, god forbid if you make a mistake and want to resettle. Tandem is not intuitively set up and gave both my partner and I meltdowns. A financial app **that I’m paying a subscription for** shouldn’t be so badly designed that I have to pop back open a Google spreadsheet, manually copy down all split transactions, and recalculate my split to actually split things correctly after we made a mistake. Get Tandem if you want to have financial meltdowns more often with your partner
I like Tandem , and use it with my SO but it seems that the creators decided to make a premium subscription version. In a vacuum, there’s nothing wrong with adding new features behind a paywall but they made the free app worse as well. Once you settle a split, you can’t go back and see what was included ( you used to be able to). They added “in-depth split history” in premium but also removed ANY view to split history in the free app which feels like a core feature to Tandem . The old view would lump all previous splits in one long list of transactions and if kept would be a perfectly functional feature that would still encourage the upgrade to the premium for a more organized view.
Finally, they should add some indication to the premium cost. The only way to see pricing is to start a free trial.
I’ve been using this app for about a month and have enjoyed how easy it is to enter and split expenses. I like how I can split by % or $ and can post expenses as both Requests and Payments. I have a few bits of feedback:
• The names of categories are not clickable (only the > arrow is) when entering expenses. I would love if the category labels were clickable. [EDIT: looks like this has been fixed recently!]
• I would love to create my own custom categories.
• The first time I downloaded Tandem , I was consistently forced into a “pay to use this app” screen. Since I uninstalled and reinstalled Tandem , I’ve had no issues. But had my partner not reached out to a friend to confirm Tandem was free, I would not have continued using Tandem .
There were many things that my partner and I were pay for and would forget to settle up or would just write it off since there was activation energy to check the statement and add it to another app. Since using this app, I realized I’ve been taking on nearly $1000+ in expenses each month that I wasn’t splitting out of inconvenience or forgetting.
The reason this review is 4 stars and not 5, is the features are simple and the UI takes a little to get used to. There are not ways to see categories in spending or I’d like to see all my transactions and then next to them if they’ve been split or not vs 2 screens now.
Gets the job done
I tried out a number of apps for keeping track of split expenses after my divorce but they all had major shortcomings. this app works very well for us. I love that you can connect it with directly to your credit cards and split something easily with a swipe. We have 3 kids and our decree mandates that all extracurricular-related costs and all medical costs are split 50/50, with a few odd items being reimbursable by my ex at 100%. This makes things SO easy for someone like with a very forgetful brain. 3 things I would add that would really make Tandem perfect: 1) ability to attach a picture of a receipt (even low res) for documentation/proof, 2) ability for the other person to see the notes I add to specific expense to help explain what it’s for, and 3) ability to customize the categories. Things like “bills”, “entertainment” or “food” don’t help me. In my case it would be extremely helpful to be able to add categories like medical, school, and extracurricular.
All in all, though it’s not perfect, it’s the best I’ve been able to find at this price point.
My boyfriend and I used to use splitwise for our monthly transactions and it was truly a pain combing through all my credit cards and figuring out what to split. After I got an ad for this app on insta, I immediately jumped on this and let me tell you, it is legitimately one of our favorite apps. Expenses take less than 15 min for me now, I do it as I go as well! Like if I’m waiting for the train and I need to do something to pass the time, super easy. I would legitimately recommend it if you’re in a partnership and you guys split expenses on the reg. Sometimes I wish I could use Tandem for other uses - like with friends on vacations.
My partner and I have been living together for several year now and when we moved in we had to manually keep track of shared expenses. We started off my sending the same $20 back and forth to each but eventually tried to keep a running list but frequently one of us would forget update. We got fed up and looked into ways of simplifying our finances and found this app! The simple tap system makes it easy to track and split purchases. My favorite feature is the ability to customize the split for when we open a drink tab and one of us decides to have a night and the other is the DD.
When my boyfriend and I started dating we’d mostly go back and forth with expenses, if one of us bought dinner one night the other would buy it the next. But when we moved in together and had to buy furniture, pay rent, utilities, groceries, trips, etc. we started splitting things with Venmo and would get into arguments about who owed what. The amazing thing about this app is it keeps us consistent since we can just swipe on all the expenses we want to split and we can actually see where we’re spending money as a couple. The setup was painless and I love that I can add expenses from my different credit cards. So glad we found Tandem!
I’m not exaggerating when I say Tandem is saving my relationship. After 7 years you start to stop keeping track of the little everyday expenses but they sure do add up! I started to become resentful knowing I was spending more in our relationship. With other apps like Zelle and Venmo you need to manually enter the amount that adds even more stress having to remember all the expenses. And they became a he said she said situation. Tandem being linked to my bank makes it so easy to swipe and add to this app and then you can change the split percentage too! I haven’t had Tandem long but I’m hoping that they don’t expire super quickly like other apps to just be forgotten.
My partner and I have always randomly decided who would pay for each shared expense. When we saw an ad for this app, we decided to try it out and now we’ll never go back! this app allows us to split every shared expense with a custom ratio to accurately reflect each of our incomes. It’s a great tool to get a clear picture of your shared expenses and figure out if one of you is paying more or less than their fair share. Some folks are turned off by the idea of making your partner pay you back for every little thing, but that’s not how we use Tandem . When one of us “owes” the other money, that person will just pay for whatever the next expense is to settle things up. Highly recommend!
My partner and I started using this app several months ago and we love it! It is very simple and convenient to use. We hook it up to any cards or accounts we use, and when a charge appears that we want to split, we swipe it to the other person. We have it set to 50/50 but I love that you have to option to change that if you have different incomes. When my partner gets the charge from me, he clicks on it and it takes him to Venmo to pay me the amount owed. We mostly use it for utilities or if we want to split dinner or an event cost. They recently added a savings account with a pretty high APY where you can separate the money into specific goals that you are saving for. It’s nice to have the ability to split costs and save money all in the same app. Overall we love Tandem and it’s better to use than just a cash exchange app because 1. You don’t have to remember to pay someone, it just shows up in Tandem automatically, and 2. It does all the splitting math for you!
Me and my boyfriend moved in December 2022 together, and at that time struggled to find some way for us to split the new bills and financial responsibilities that came with that. He was the one who found this app, and while I was hesitant at first, I found myself absolutely loving it. I could connect all my cards and easily split up what I needed to between the two of us. Especially in the cases where a transaction wasn’t an even 50/50 split, this app does the math for you to make sure you’re splitting things evenly for you.
With the new update too, it reminds me to go back into Tandem after I settle the bill on Venmo, so that way I’m not racking up new charges before settling the old one. With that update, easily knocks Tandem into a 10/10!
My significant other and I have been splitting expenses since the beginning of our relationship. At the beginning we would settle up regularly or we’d forget and guess and it added some financial stress to the relationship. Since we discovered this app, it has made everything so much easier. Having the ability to link a credit card, still have the privacy of your personal expenses, and having the ability to split with your partner by a simple swipe has been great. Not to mention, it highlights personal spending habits which has made me better at budgeting. I highly recommend Tandem to anyone who is looking for a fair and easy way to split expenses. I love that we can adjust % as needed and in some cases we can go in and put the exact amount. Great idea and awesome execution.
I live with my partner and we split expenses for rent, utilities, food, cats, and more. I love how easily this app connects to all my banking accounts and credit cards to have one combined feed of all my and his expenses ordered by date. They have accurate descriptions too, so you can easily scroll through and choose which charges to split. You can also customize splits if you don’t want it to be 50/50, and you can set up recurring splits for regular things like rent and internet. We try to go through once a month and make sure we’ve added everything, and this app will do the math and say who owes what balance. There is a link to settle up directly with venmo or enter other types of payements manually which will reset the balance owed to zero. 10/10 would recommend, makes life so much easier!
Before I started using this app, I was making a spreadsheet and literally writing in all of the shared expenses between my partner and I. It was a lot of manual labor, at least an hour of my time per month, and my partner never knew how much money he owed me until I took the time to do this. I’ve been using this app for nearly a year and it has completely automated keeping track of shared expenses. I also love that you can change the split on expenses if one partner tends to pay more. I love Tandem, it has helped create so much transparency about money in my relationship without having to share bank accounts. I highly recommend this to anyone who stresses about keeping track of shared expenses. One feature I would love is the option to pay a lump sum of your choice rather than pay for specific purchases.
this app helps my partner and I stay on top of all of our expenses. I love that you can schedule recurring expenses to split automatically and set a predetermined split percentage so you don’t have to do so much manual work for each expense — you literally just swipe. Previously, we used splitwise and venmo and it was so much work each time we had to go back through bank and credit card statements that sometimes my partner would just give up and not charge me for things. This has been tremendously helpful! The only thing I’d wish to see is better transaction history in the free version — once one of us settles up in Tandem , we can no longer look at expenses. My partner likes to go through this app once a month while I go through it weekly, so whenever he settles the balance, I can’t review what he charged or payed me for.
When my boyfriend and I moved in together, we downloaded this app and it is sooooo helpful for keeping track of how much we are spending!! I’m usually not a nickel and dimer, and believe “it all evens out eventually” with friends and family when it comes to money. However, since moving in together, we split utilities, furniture, groceries, etc.. let me tell you, it was NOT evening out. I love how this app can link directly to your bank account, so once a week all I have to do is go and swipe which transactions I’d like to split! this app automatically calculates the net difference between spenders. You can also adjust the split so that not every purchase is 50/50! My boyfriend and I split a lot of things 50/50, but for example, he really wanted a nicer set of speakers to go with our tv, where I really didn’t care much about it. We split the tv and speakers in a 70/30 split. We love using this app, it’s a stress free way to address money spending differences in a relationship/partnership!
Tandem is a game changer for couples managing finances. We switched from Honeydue and Tandem is a breath of fresh air in comparison - it just works. One huge piece of feedback - we currently have to do some magical things when we settle up. Since there's a pretty large balance in Tandem , sometimes we'd like to settle up only a certain amount (i.e. $100) rather than the full balance. We currently have to do this by going through all of the charges and manually choosing a combination that results in approximately the desired amount. Would be amazing to be able to enter a fixed amount to settle up like in Honeydue! No other complaints :)
