Tiny steady improvement

I had knee pain every day, which lead to ankle pain and then hip and back pain as I compensated for the troublesome knee. My insurance sent an email and then a brochure about Hinge, so I applied. A few weeks later my insurance was approved and I committed to spending 3 days and 10 minutes a day to improving my knee. I did the program every day for months and slowly and steadily I had more confidence in my knee’s ability to carry me through the day. First there was less pain and now with pain so infrequent that it isn’t worth mentioning. My coach is very helpful. Exercises I struggled with were replaced and reintroduced slowly. The program changes exercises after a certain amount of points earned so you don’t get tired of one routine. The sensors and video representation of the exercises keep you on track for proper form. I have run with my dogs and walked up hill and played golf and badminton. Theses are things I thought were in my past when I started on steroid shots in my back. The program has all my confidence.

Great but wish it would continue

The Hinge neck program has been great. I first thought that the easiness of the exercises was because they don’t know the degree of your injury or chronic pain, but it’s really just to get you moving and progressing. The exercises never really got too much harder but they certainly worked the supporting muscle groups so my neck and back feel stronger and my chronic pain is greatly reduced. The program has 40 levels and you can get through a level in a few days. I wish the levels advanced beyond 40 but my coach said you just need to go back and repeat some. This is less motivating than trying to complete a level. I suggest they offer a way to generate Levels 40+ that would mix and match exercises from levels 30-40 and then you just keep going as long as you want to. Otherwise, this has been a great program and I thank my employer for making this available for free.

Great app

HingeHealth is amazing! While it’s me at to help folks with severe back pain and issues I was not in that category. My issue was general tightness and discomfort in my back which I could not stretch away. HingeHealth with the guided workouts that progress as you do the work has been great for me.
My back feels much better and I have been introduced to some new things like balance exercises. That’s something I never did before and frankly i struggled the first time it asked me to do a wood pecker but little by little I have improved on those meaning my balance and posture are better.
There is a coach assigned to you for motivation and questions. This can be great for people that need it. The work is usually under 15 minutes so very easy to work into your schedule
There are also great articles on everything well being like meditation.
Lastly HingeHealth itself works great on all my devices so no issues there.

It is better than going to PT

I have gone to physical therapy and down hinge health. In my opinion, hinge health is much more personal and custom than attending a physical therapy clinic. For me, it is very stressful to drive, interact with strangers, do exercises in front of other strangers in a large PT area. I think plhusical therapists are the nicest people, but I have GAD, and I hate going to any appointments. They take up a lot of mental, emotional, and physical energy as well as money and time. I like doing my hinge health in my pajamas at home. I can talk to my coach any time, and my coach is very nice. Even though I get stressed out by talking on the phone, it was not bad at all, and then after that we were able to talk via text and email mainly, so it is much less stress for me. She also gave me alternative exercises when I was struggling with one of the exercises. Overall, I think it’s a wonderful program and when I stick to it, my pain is much decreased.

Ok, but...

The exercises are helpful but HingeHealth could use some improvements:

-It doesn’t have landscape mode functionality. I prefer using it on my iPad ( propped up on keyboard in landscape mode) or connecting my device to a TV. Needing to twist my neck to look at it sideways leaves me ( literally) with pain in the neck.

-Because I’m far older (nearly 60) and less flexible than many users ( thanks to decades of back problems), I find the difficulty levels progressing far faster than this old body can handle. I’d like to be able to reset levels so I can progress at a pace that’s realistic for me, by redoing earlier levels, rather than a pace that works for a 20 or 30-something year old. Same was true pre-Covid when I was traveling a lot and not able to do exercises or connect to WiFi while in remote parts of the world. Sometimes it’s necessary to go back and redo a few levels or, after a long gap, even the beginning to rebuild strength. Being able to restart at Level X ( resetting everything after level X) would be useful. Having only one exercise at each level in the library is not enough. Although the new Change function is helpful, it doesn’t make much sense when I change it to a Level 1 exercise and it tells me I’ve completed a Level 12 exercise.

PS-never did get sensors that worked properly even after 3 shipments where they twice sent “replacement “ sensors for the wrong program. I finally gave up on those. Not sure they’re really necessary though.

My recent experience with my coach and also with my Physical Therapist

I found HH extremely easy to incorporate in my daily exercise routine. It takes 10-15 minutes to complete and starts the day on the correct foot. The coach Erica is extremely supportive and knowledgeable. I had a lower back injury 5 days ago. She was able to guide me through and arranged a physical therapist appointment in less than 24 hours. I had a PT session with Egil Quam today for more than an hour. He was able to answer all my questions, removed some of my fears, and had put me on the road to recovery. Overall, I am extremely pleased with the professionalism and knowledge of the supporting staff. Feels like I have a personal trainer and a physical therapist.

I am still very impressed with coach Erica’s timely monitoring of my back health condition. Her occasional reminders and words of encouragement are keys to making Hinge health very effective.

Getting better!

My neighbor and I talked in January about our New Years resolutions. We both experience daily neck or back pain. Listing mine I started to say I wanted to be free of pain. I had to “do something.” He told me he had just started Hinge and how he was improving his range of motion and getting a lot out of it. He said Hinge inspires him to do a bit more stretching after doing the short exercises from the program.
Every time I see him now I thank him. Pain was the first thing I thought about every day. Neck pain was making every day tasks harder to do. The simple exercises help ease the pain and get things moving. When I am hurting, my tendency was to lay down with a heating pad and ibuprofen!
Hinge exercises and the self care article following it, really have made a difference. The coach check in makes me accountable.

Well guided workout with good results

I have been using HingeHealth consistently for a few months. I’m doing the “neck” workout. The workout is 5-8 exercises, guided by a rhythmic tone. I start the exercise and close my eyes to follow the tones. Becomes almost meditative for me. This is not a cardio workout- but focused on flexibility and targeted muscle strengthening for the neck and upper back. Includes educational readings. I find this to be a well constructed program that has helped me physically and gives information worth thinking about. Importantly- the program is working for me. My arthritic neck and shoulders hurt less and my range of motion had increased. I am staying with the program because it doesn’t take long, I’m feeling better, and I e learned I can do something positive to minimize and manage my discomfort without reaching for the Tylenol 😀

Three weeks in, it’s a great program

You know the problem with exercise regimens, you need to be motivated to actually do it. Hinge Health makes it easy to get started with easy exercises that only take a few minutes a day, then gradually increasing time and complexity. You are paired with a coach who communicates via text, so it’s almost like having a personal accountability buddy. The coach also helps adjust exercises that might be too difficult. The sensors are optional but help you to know that you are doing the exercises correctly and it points out any imbalances in your body (I can stretch further to my right side than my left). Overall I think it’s a great program, though admittedly after 3 weeks I cannot say it has changed my life. But I have high hopes!

Extremely helpful

I’ve loved using HingeHealth. I’ve had a lot of trouble finding the right exercises to help strengthen my back. HingeHealth slowly builds up the difficulty of various strengthening exercises and puts in stretches that release tension either didn’t know I was carrying around or that I didn’t know how to release. Having a coach has really helped with my accountability, so I put in more effort consistently than I might have otherwise. My coach has also been very helpful with suggesting modifications if I need them. After each exercise session, there’s also a helpful short article that gives some really good insight to what influences pain levels, ways to cope with pain, etc. I’ve been recommending this to many of my friends who also suffer from joint pain.

App to Grow and Recover

I have constant back pain problems among other areas, but back is the worst. Through my employer in Jan 2021 I was able to start this program with a health coach, sensors & app. Wow! Who knew??? A short exercise focused on back issues, even shorter article to read and 15 minutes later I’m on my way. What I didn’t realize is the small consistent steps is what I needed more than a big blow out and back to chiropractor, big exercises for recovery & months of healing. This doesn’t stop those big moments but takes them down a whole heck of a lot and recovery was way faster. My health coach was a delight and worked with my style of encouragement needed. 💖 forever a life changer. I’ll continue this program even after my year is complete ❤️

It really helps!

Sometimes we don’t realize how our pain keeps us from moving and how by NOT moving we are contributing more to our pain. Now, with Hinge, when I have that terrible ache and tightness at the end of my work day, instead of sitting down or laying down and wincing in pain- I will do my Hinge exercises- even if I don’t have my phone handy- I’ll run through my exercises- and magically- the movement and blood flow from the 10 minutes or so makes me feel so much better. I’m not completely pain free, but my pain level will go from a 7 to a 4 or 5. That is huge and helps me be more active, which, in turn, further reduces my pain. Thank you Hinge! Who knew that something so simple and not time consuming or costly could be so helpful!

Life-changing

I started Hinge Health in February 2021 as a last resort. I am missing three pieces of cartridge on my knee and was on a daily prescription medicine for pain. I also had a synthetic joint fluid injection to try and help. The orthopedist said I’d be a candidate for knee replacement in 10-15 years (I’m 46).

When I saw Hinge Health offered as a new benefit with my husband’s employer I figured I didn’t have anything to lose. With the simplicity of the daily exercises I didn’t expect to see any change - they were just too easy in my opinion. I was wrong. Within a week I no longer had pain walking. Within a month I could go up and down stairs pain-free. Within two months I was snorkeling and hiking for hours a day. It’s been nothing short of miraculous. I haven’t missed a day of exercises since I started and intend to do this for the rest of my life.

I can’t say enough about this program. I’ve told all my friends about it. The coaching (Brittni Troyan has been amazing!) and the education have given me a better understanding of how much I’m actually in control of my pain management.

Thank you for this program. It’s given me back my mobility.

fine if you believe anecdotal data and can be brainwashed

The exercises are okay- sometimes the sensors are not correct and can’t tell that I am standing up. One exercise had incorrect directions.

But my real problem is with the “Education” portion of the program. The articles are based on anecdotal data and are designed to brainwash you into thinking that your pain is just in your head and not important enough for you to miss work. So by gaslighting you into thinking your arthritis isn’t real, you can stay at work and damage your body further. I already had one joint replacement at a young age, and because I didn’t know what was happening, my posture and range of motion deteriorated because I didn’t seek help right away. HingeHealth would have told me I was imagining things and I didn’t need to get a replacement, I just needed to read these articles and move a little each day.

*My* anecdotal data says otherwise. Too bad Hinge Health is just interested in keeping you at work rather than really educating you about what is happening with your body and what each exercise can do to help. I know what happened to me and trying to rewrite history is ridiculous.

Maybe they should have considered that some of us understand cognitive behavior therapy and might recognize the tricks they were trying to pull. In fact, if they had more training in it, their app might be more successful.

The road to recovery is now the Hinge Health app!

After a botched arthroscopy (and a second surgery to correct the first), my right knee had been painful and swollen, with limited range of motion for over twenty years. After a recent visit to an orthopedist, I learned that I have the onset of arthritis in this knee.

The Hinge Health App and program has helped me to minimize the knee pain, build strength, and regain some range of motion in this knee with a daily exercise regimen, coaching

(after an initial phone consult, Coach Suzanne reaches out via text almost daily - shout out to a great Coach!!!),

and a variety of articles that address well-being, including importance of sleep, impact of diet on joint and body long-term health, and most importantly, a better understanding of pain.

In just four months (and counting) the Hinge Health Program though HingeHealth has enabled me to jog again, exercise with renewed vigor, and reduce the pain in the right knee!

Multiple attempts in physical therapy have not brought about the progress that I have attained with Hinge Health through the Hinge Health App! The road to recovery begins with the Hinge Health App!

Good overall

I have done the knee and shoulder/neck programs. HingeHealth is good and the therapy approach is good. It’s not a perfect substitute for a trained physical therapist or pain medicine specialist because it can’t observe and analyze you and make a customized therapy plan, but it can be a good follow-up to traditional therapy or an entry point for those with less serious issues. It has been really helpful to me during the COVID-19 quarantine. The coaches are sincere and eager to help.

The sensors don’t seem necessary after you get the hang of the exercises. I had some problems with text display in HingeHealth but they were resolved by customer support. I did notice that there are significant charges to my insurance plan related to this program so it may not have out-of-pocket costs but your plan or Medicare is paying for it.

Needs to be Expanded

The program works fine until you reach level 40. It took me about 5 months to get there. Then all progress stops. You are stuck on level 40 with the same 10 exercises and reps. As has been mentioned, there needs to be a maintenance aspect which rotates through various exercises after level 40.

The motivation of points and progressing to the next level stops even if you start back at an earlier level. Since the idea is progression from one level to the next, it isn’t ideal to go back very many steps as you will be doing fewer reps on the same exercises.

Doesn’t seem that it would be very difficult to add a plateau level that rotates through different exercises every session that are appropriate for maintaining joint health.

It changed my Life!!!

I’ve been on hinge health for about 7 months now and it’s changed my life. I have a wonderful coach who encourages me to keep up the good work. I’m active again. And with me being active, I was able to loss some weight, and all I did was my stretches 3-5 days a week and only took me 10 mins a day . My kids are involved in my stretches. They do them with me. It keeps them off the Tv and games. Don’t get me wrong I’ve slacked off a little here and there and had some flare ups with my back pain but that’s because I wasn’t doing my stretches. I’m back in the game and enjoying my life a whole lot more now. I highly recommend joining Hinge Health.

Using it for about a year

I think this program is worth it for anyone experiencing any muscle pain. Whether it’s in your neck or your ankles, they really can work if you’re willing to be patient and slowly improve over time. It’s the only proven way to change anything about your body for the long term. Discipline, patience, perseverance is key to doing it because most of the exercises are so easy it doesn’t feel like you’re making progress but slowly over time you begin to realize you’re getting much more difficult exercises for longer holds. And none of the sessions last more than fifteen minutes!

Hinge health

I’ve been doing hinge health for about a year now. I started with the hip program. I was having bad hip pain from running. One of my legs is a little shorter than the other. The hinge health program eased me into some great exercises at my own pace to strengthen areas I needed strengthened. The support was very good. Someone checks in at least once a week. The articles are very good. You get to have a library of healthy articles to read up on and expand your knowledge and learn new ways of exercise and breathing and relaxing. New ways to attack pains and manage the pain in order to keep doing the activities you love to do.

Hinge Health

A structured physical therapy program you can do in your home. You are working in your home with a program and coaches that are specialists in your area of need, be it the hinge of shoulder, knee or back.
You start slowly and build strength, they are constantly checking with you on the current status of your “hinge” . Additionally, they share articles that assist you in being successful with the physical therapy.
If you have an injury in a hinge area, trust “your hinge” to Hinge Health. They will help you strengthen your hinge slowly & safely. I am so thankful I have had the opportunity to strengthen my shoulder with Hinge Health! I am no longer limited with a weak shoulder!

Not at all impressed. Exercises were okay, the goofy cartoon animation constantly smiling through painful exercise was ridiculously annoying, but what I despised most of all were the stupid "education articles" at the end of each segment discounting the need for real medical advice and attempting to convince you that your pain isn't real and can be cured by "positive thinking and coping mechanisms" and tools from your "pain backpack" which is another silly analogy. I felt interrogated by the "coach" and very uncomfortable she kept pushing me not do to the bilateral knee replacements recommended by multiple doctors. She also would not honor no contact requests and was high pressure. Thank goodness I went ahead with the surgery. I have had a huge improvement in my life and much less pain after the surgery. Sometimes people DO have real physical issues that need real medical treatment.

Very disappointed with the Hinge Health program. I was put on lower back pain program. Although advertised as customizable, I was informed that I should skip exercises that were impossible to do, e.g., a standing quad stretch, which for me was impossible since I couldn't bend my leg (spasticity and weakness) nor grab it (balance). No options were offered by Hinge Health coach or physical therapist, even though I knew one. I was given a relatively new coach who never really offered personal encouragement. Had to jump through hoops to reach a physical therapist that never addressed my fundamental concerns. He even told me to skip what I couldn't do and not substitute exercises. Hinge Health should understand that not all lower back pain is caused by same problem and therefore offer more flexibility. App was fair, animations and later slides with actual people were not helpful. Actually got severe back pain from following animation, didn't have intermediate position that caused injury. Sensors were useful for most exercises but actually interfering with a few exercises. Literature was largely anecdotal or from non-refereed publications.

I wanted to opt out of the program before the next billing cycle but Hinge Health automatically bills your insurance for one year… almost $1000 without letting you know. Hinge Health refuses to refund ANY portion of the money regardless of how early in the year you want out of the Hinge Health program. This is an unethical practice that is costing insurance companies untold dollars! No wonder our insurance costs are skyrocketing with such fraudulent practices by companies billing practices such as Hinge Health. By not letting clients know prior to billing insurance for another year, Hinge Health retains the entire sum collected regardless of when the Clint no longer needs nor wants to continue use of Hinge Health’s services. What a racket!!!

This app is complete garbage! As a long time health expert, be aware! The movements are half ass attempt with incorrect information. Ranges of motion, breathing, exercises, inability to control your level and just about everything sucks! You have to look through layers of fat instructor to see what she is doing and be demotivated. The front lounge, side lounge, stretches, and just about everything is incorrect posture in this app as she bends forward doing a simple squat halfway! If you are informed, then you know to stay away from this app.
