Garbage app, & security like Fort Knox just to access YOUR OWN money

Advice for expats/people who live/moving overseas, do yourselves a favor...close your account, and jump ship to CitiBank...HSBC HK app, website, banking is straight up garbage when compared to other banks/banking app.

First is the log-in process, which always require you to answer your question, fine. Then on to your password...what is the 4th/6th, and last letter of your password? Or 1st/5th/second to the last...it’s like pulling hair just to access your own money.

Second thing is the the process to reactivate a dormant account. HSBC in Hong Kong requires little calculator looking device to sign-in...I understand you can switch it to a mobile device security, BUT you need the physical device to switch over to the mobile phone security device. Once your account is dormant, you can’t even update your phone number/email without that calculator...okay, only you can snail mail a form from overseas...it’s been over a month since I mailed my form, and still haven’t heard anything back yet.

Yeah, do yourself a favor go to a different bank. Last time I was in HK, I wasted 3 hours in the Yuen Long branch just to reactivate account/get cash out.

Weird login failure and u don’t ask for a review mid transaction!

So one fine day HSBCHK suddenly told me that I was entering an incorrect password and I know I wasn’t. The helpline guys suggested I try going the forgot password route. Long process ensued (the helpline guys were most helpful), which involved changing of passwords and a trip to the branch. When we were ready to restart, helpline asked me to delete HSBCHK and download again. Except this reload let me use my old password! No more messages of incorrect password! Some glitch in HSBCHK lead to all the fuss 🤯. Still waiting for HSBC to get back to me about why this was happening. Hoping this will catch their attention.

Identify Verification is too complicated

Not a user friendly mobile App!! Identity verification process is too complicated and time consuming. I repeated this process for 5 or 6 times in order to request a transfer ……the whole experience was very frustrating

Reactivation for no reason

It’s happened to me 3 times now. I activated HSBCHK , then 2-3 months later it somehow just forgets about my activation and I have to redo activation right when I need to pay bills or use my account. Not a single other banking app I have has this problem.

Utterly useless

From login, to transfer, HSBCHK makes you jump through all kinds of hoops just to access your own money. FaceID crashes HSBCHK when I tried to transfer money. It offered me to use TouchID on an iPad that has no TouchID. HSBCHK makes it so that your own funds are inaccessible to you. Why is it allowed on HSBCHK store?

works well but constant updates

HSBCHK requires me to update almost weekly. it’s very inconvenient when i’m not on wifi and or need to do something immediately. I have apps with at least three other international banks that rarely require me to update. HSBC loves bureaucracy and making things much more complicated than they need to be.

Too much steps when setting up the app

It’s ridiculous that now the hkid and a selfie are required when setting up HSBCHK in the new phone. This is not even when I first register for an online banking account, I already have an account with all the correct security answers and passwords. This is just too much.

Frustrating app

I had all the apps transferred from my previous iPhone to my new iPhone 15 pro max without any issues. However HSBCHK does not work anymore because it states that the previous iPhone has to be removed…it has been removed and all of the contents are erased. I traded it in to Apple. I have tried everything and nothing works. It means I cannot do any transactions or see my account information. Very frustrating

Can’t log in at all.

Every time I try to login by entering the Mobile Security Key password, it keeps telling me that my mobile banking session has expired, even though I have JUST updated it. I can’t even contact HSBC either to fix this because I am overseas. Your hotlines are down, the Live Chat feature on your website isn’t working, and I don’t see an email address I can contact. How the hell am I supposed to fix this?! Such a useless, unnecessarily complicated app. I use the HSBC US app all the time with ease- this one is absolute garbage in comparison.

Redicously dumb app

I have worked with a lot of banking apps and this is one of the worst. Functions are not intuitive and have to read instructions multiple times to understand what to do. Security features, which are supposed improve security, actually force to user to use poor security practices.

Update

App works well enough but they force you to update HSBCHK every time they make changes (which is frequently) and won’t let you access HSBCHK until you do the update. Incredibly inconvenient and annoying. Otherwise, HSBCHK is fine.

Possible bugs

Very often, when I try to re-login after I logged out of the apps properly, the apps page will say that I had been logged out. It sounds like I forgot to log out and the apps had to log out for me.

ID verification doesn’t work on iPhone 15

The focus distance needed for ID verification on iPhone 15 is too close for the main camera and there is no option to switch to ultra wide. This means that ID verification is broken for iPhone 15 since HSBCHK says the picture is too blurry and won’t proceed.

Keeps crashing

Won’t open sometimes, had to uninstall and reinstall it wouldn’t open

No warning, no use if you don’t have latest one

I find it a little ridiculous that if you don’t have HSBCHK updated, you can’t use it. There have been times I’ve been traveling and not within Wifi range and due to data restriction over 4G/lte, I can’t actually do what I need to. There’s also no warning (like- update coming next week, else you’re stuck without access to your app)

Very secure, almost too secure

Almost too encrypted, so many double triple steps for a simple payment. The Chase bank app is a lot more straight forward. Perhaps there can be a minimum amount before all the double encryption or extra questions need to appear.

Too slow the response sometimes take more than 15 seconds to open n log in

Painful updating process

The updates always come suddenly without cause and the process of updating is painful.

I need the dark mode icon!

I hope the developer can adapt the dark mode icon of HSBCHK .

Quality Service

It’s very easy to exchange currency between my various HSBC -HK accounts and transfer funds from HSBC - HK to USA
