OSMO, King of Crashes, beware before buying the device

Developers please invest in making this very cool app actually work! It literally crashes 100% of the time in less than 21 seconds, more like in the 8 second range. The only thing it does correctly is calibration and that is easy, provided DJIGO will stay open long enough to start the process. I cannot give this review on DJIGO on my great working iPhone 7 as it will crash. I have deleted DJIGO and reinstalled twice, no successful resolution. I bought one for my adult son as well and same experiences for him as well. The Apple video and photo will work great, but the few times DJIGO did work, it was amazing smooth. So team........a few 100,000 or more are counting on you. Thanks for making a cool product, now make it a joy and something we can use. BT California.

Unusable

Keeping original below, but after tears of use I have to update. The software is no longer usable with Osmo mobile with iPhone 12 from what I can tell. I’ve submitted a support request, but this has gone from useless to worthless. Don’t buy DJI.

Original: I'm revising this review because I learned where the photos/videos are located. Select 'Connect with device' (Yes, for some reason this accesses the camera roll when not connected) > 'Camera' > library icon (camera roll). This loads the camera and the camera roll is in the standard location when using the gimbal.

I'm using DJIGO with the osmo mobile. For controlling a few specialized shots, it is great. If you can get the same shot some other way, DO IT! I cannot suggest using it to for primary capturing of video and images. If you are running low on space you will have to remove other data from your phone to be able to export and access your content in other apps, which gets very challenging for long shots. My biggest complaint is that my battery last less than half as long as the native iPhone camera app with no apparent benefit for general recording.

Like I said, it has some neat things you can do with beautification, motion time lapse, long exposure, and of course is necessary for calibration of the gimbal. I will use it for that, but never again as the main video capture application. It is just too inefficient and a small liability for the videos and pictures recorded with it.

Went from amazing to super frustrating.

Don't fly very often, so I always do latest software and firmware updates for the controller, drone, app and batteries before I fly. Bad move. My P3P flew like a dream the last time I flew it about 6 months ago no prob. Got it out 4 days ago. Updated. Did a full preflight check (I am a licensed pilot) and no video signal. It says detecting strong interference. I move to another location 15 miles away, same deal. Move to another location 10 miles from that. No change. Been to all the forums, troubleshooting for days and am very frustrated. All three places could always fly far with no video issues, now it won't connect a video feed from 2 feet away on the ground. I am going to give DJI the Benefit of the doubt and hope they realize the problem they must have caused (I've read everyone else's angry reviews) and fixes it soon. I'll update my review then. Till then, I'm looking into other products.

Not worth the hassle

Was given this as a gift thankfully. If I bought it I would return it. Very cumbersome to get the phone to stabilize. The manual was 2 pages long and never mentioned how to calibrate the “balancing” of it all. The up is down and right is left is very annoying for a beginner user. I would also expect the same quality as I am using my iPhone X but everything is worse than the camera on the flip phone I had years ago. Why don’t the pics go to my album. That makes no sense. I don’t like to share my location and yet it must have it enabled to work.. why is that necessary if I am using it for personal use. I do not want my pics on an app that I have to then go download each and every image (most are so terrible they are garbage). I will stick with my regular camera (Nikon) and my iPhone. I wish it would just allow me to use it as a stabilizer and use my phone settings for quality and all other settings. Do not recommend this at all.

Omso2: Just Aweful

The Osmo 2 was really hyped up and I fell for it hook line and sinker. I bought it and downloaded DJIGO hoping to experience a great product. The osmo 2 made a horrible rattling sound when I attempted to balance my iPhone X vertically. I followed all of the instructions and video tutorials. I contacted customer service and that’s where things went horribly wrong. They instructed me to follow the manual and after I advised them of all of my troubleshooting steps it was like I didn’t say anything and they advised me to repeat the same steps. After three emails and no progress I advised the customer service rep I was going to return the product as i could not use it. I was instructed to take it to a service center (after owning it for four days) and they would repair the unit. It was literally like I was speaking English and they were unable to understand anything I said.

I took the Osmo2 back and uninstalled DJIGO and I’m so happy I did. Horrible app, horrible product and horrible customer service— just horrible!

software renders their devices useless

The biggest problem with DJI is that their software makes it incredibly difficult to use their products. You have pretty much have bought a fancy brick, unless you sign in, and agree to their terms and update, their software and firmware, pair the devices again, and the calibrate, every time you try to use your device and now oh no! your battery is dying already, never mind the fact that you missed the magical shot you had just gotten an opportunity to take 15 minutes ago when you grabbed your gear! Also of not is the fact that the majority of these tasks require a signal, so if you’ve got a dedicated device as a monitor or camera (like an old iPhone) that doesn’t have cellular connection, or you’re out in the woods, on location, or just somewhere without a WiFi connection capability, you’re equipment is dead weight.

I’m not really exaggerating, their software is such a hassle to use that it goes beyond frustrating and hinders your ability to actually use their devices. Whether it be the Osmo series, the drones, the ronins, you end up with the same experience, you’re spending more time trying to set it up every time you want to use it than you will actually using it.

Configure Your Osmo, and Drop This App

Downloaded DJIGO as it was necessary to configure my new DJI Osmo mobile 2. After doing my first film shoot, I went to export the videos and photos. Immediately I noticed a plethora of issues.

1. No Geotagging: Seriously, why? It's not hard, I already granted DJIGO access to my location, is it really that hard to add location data to video?

2. Poor Video Management: Why not just store it directly to the iPhone? If it's an IOS restriction I understand, but exporting videos is cumbersome and annoying. Plus it takes up additional space.

3. No Access to 4k60fps: My iPhone Xs Max records at 4k60fps. Why doesn't DJIGO?

4. EXPORTED SLOW MOTION IS BROKEN!!!: This is probably my biggest pet peeve yet about DJIGO. For God knows what reason, exporting a slow motion video to your photo library causes a doubling of the frames. Meaning if you had a slow motion video that lasted 15 seconds, that same video now lasts 30 seconds. Other than throwing your video in another app, there's no way to speed these videos up.

5. The Movie Creation Experience: DJI has included a video editing application built into DJIGO. It's complete trash. The preview doesn't display slowmo, the exported video doesn't even play at the same speed. I don't understand how they messed this up.

It will take a serious overhaul for me to continue to use DJIGO. Until then, I'll stick with the stock photo app and Filmic Pro.

Cumbersome workflow, no geotagging

I use DJIGO with my Osmo
Mobile. First, I do not understand why I need to have an account. I am totally not interested in any of the online functions. When I am in the outdoors there may not even be any mobile phone signal. Second, why do I have to manually copy photos and videos from DJIGO to get them into my library? I want them only in my library and no where else. I don't want to have to manually copy them. What's more, the photos and videos I copy are dated on the day I copy them and not when I took them. So if I forget to move them at some day they will be put together with others I take later on. Third, the photos and videos do not contain any geodata, photos and videos I take on my iPhone are all fine but those from the DJI app never contain any location data. That's very annoying. I have to add them manually later on.

Update: The developers broke power usage. I used to use DJIGO for hours. Now my iPhone SE goes from around 80% to almost 0 in 10 minutes. Apple’s camera app still works efficiently. It’s just DJI’s that’s broken.

Bricked my Phantom 3 Advanced

Dji makes it too difficult to update firmware on these drones and controllers. I went to fly my drone the other day and it said a firmware upgrade needed to be installed on my drone and controller. I had to use DJIGO to update the firmware on my controller. After I clicked update it downloaded the firmware without any issues. Then it began to install it. It was stuck at 0% for about 8 mins and then suddenly said firmware update was complete. After I updated my drone using a sd card and went to turn on my controller and drone to start flying, my controller would not turn on. No lights, no sounds, nothing. I tried plugging into charger, and still no lights. Now I can’t fly because this firmware bricked my controller. It said it was successfully installed, but now my drone does not communicate with the remote. I am unable to get the “camera view” button to show to try to install the firmware again. All it has is a button that says “how to connect”. The firmware update process has too many bugs and it ruins your drone. My drone and controller were perfectly fine until this last update. Now it’s a expensive paper weight.

Terrible cumbersome app and support

DJIGO is a chore to use. The only interaction with the Mobile 2 is the camera and their store page. The problem is that I’m looking for a firmware update but there’s nothing to indicate if there’s a new one or not. The gimbal already has issues connecting with my phone so I don’t rely on apps to “let me know”. No thanks I’d rather have an option to check for an update or at least show that my firmware is up to date when I check it. Of course to check the firmware version I have to actually be in camera mode where the gimbal is moving while I try to manipulate the mess on the screen. There’s no option to stop the gimbal without turning it off which if it’s off, it’s not connected and DJIGO doesn’t give any options in that case. Also what’s up with a separate app for the models. Why is there a version for one half of your catalog and a different one for the other half? Put it all in one app and allow customers to use the newer app cause we all know you aren’t doing anything with this one anymore. It says there’s updates but it’s largely the same mess it was when I first got it.

Most complicated device for electronics I have ever used.

As soon as something unexpected occurs solving it takes hours if you’re lucky to fix. Documentation is very poor. Charging issues are monumental. I changed it to 100% and immediately it started loosing charge although I was only scanning battery charge on iPhone. It went from 100% to 29% in less than 40 minutes and that was after I reconnected the charger. Also the connection to the port was not solid. It was my 4th time using it in the 1 month I have had it. Very disappointed in such a highly recommend item. Looked for a phone no. to call for tech support on line to no avail. Chat was not worth the time spent and problem too detailed to email. I am hoping driving to Apple store will yield better results and satisfaction. I gave two stars because two of the earlier times I used it I did get good results. Now it can’t seem to charge or hold a charge and have barely owned it for a month with minimal use.

DJI APP Mid-flight new popup blocker.

I was using my DJI APP on my Job in Class-D airspace. A pop up from DJI came up on screen saying I was In Class D airspace and would I take responsibility for that, It took up my whole screen in Black and Dark Blue, I could not find how to make it go away so I immediately brought my inspire 1 drone down! landing on pump house roof thinking it safe but not being able to see through DJI camera on DJI App it proceeded to slide slowly off shingles into golf course pond! Damaging drone. Later I found out from other DJI pilots they also had same problem, the solution was a spec in a spec Dark Blue dot yes or no ?It was too dark and blended in to entire screen color with a spec dot to indicate yes or no with out direction. I took a screen shot of the pop up if anyone wants to see it.
I did have clearance to fly and emailed my clearance to them prior to flight. I’m very unhappy. Very very. Contact me for questions.

DJI, what the he11?

What other product can you purchase that works less the more it’s updated and longer you own it. I’ve had numerous DJI quads and hexa’s from the F450 with Naza V1 and software 1.0. The older ones you had to build and could upgrade. Firmware updates have taken away channels, used to have 32. Made the video range way shorter and way more error messages and warnings which guess what- take your eye off the copter! Signal interference all the time, video feed not working and annoying warnings multiple times about airspace (I’m a pilot, don’t need multiple screen hogging warnings about the same thing, I got it). So if it were a car it would be like your range would go down, windshield fog up a lot and get less radio stations after taking it in for service........

App crashes constantly

I will try to limit my frustrations to just the mobile app... I have a Phantom 3 standard. DJIGO on my iPhone 7 Plus crashes within seconds of launching it, every-time I try to use it. (I update DJIGO and firmware whenever available) I am forced to use my iPad to view the camera which doesn’t fit on the remote bracket. Please fix this!

Aside from that, there is always some minor issue when I try to fly. It’s a rare day when I power on, connect, and fly. DJI you have so much potential to be amazing, but the constant hiccups when trying to fly leaving me feeling sour and not wanting to use your product.

Not as advertised. Only records in low resolution.

DJIGO is supposed to record 4K, as the new iPhones support that resolution; in fact, iPhones have recorded 4K video for several years. But DJIGO only lets me shoot in 720P. It’s a big waste of a very expensive phone camera. Also, the exposure control bar is directly adjacent to the focus reticle, making it hard to adjust lighting.

As an aside, other users are shooting 4K with Filmic Pro instead ($5.95 from DJIGO Store), but that app isn’t completely compatible with the Osmo 2 gimbal (the Osmo control buttons mainly are disabled, except for power and the 4-way motor hat). Same with the built-in Apple Camera. The stabilizer works, but you must tap the phone screen to control it instead of using gimbal buttons.

This is disappointing, since DJI in their marketing and videos implies you can take advantage of your phone’s maximum capabilities. Had I known DJIGO and gimbal are crippled by lack of updates for current generation devices, I’d have bought another stabilizer. Not recommended.

To anyone having Bluetooth issues

The software is a pain … but I got it working after some fiddling. Here are the steps I recommend to get rid of the Bluetooth issue -

1. Be sure you only have one device you’re trying to connect. If you connected an older phone and then try to pair with a new phone and the unit senses the older phone is on, it will not pair.

2. Reset your password - DJIGO only seems to work if you’re logged in. If you need to reset your password, the email will be in Chinese. Use Google translate and it’s basically two steps involving entering your email on the website (click the email link to get there) and then enter the new password twice on the next screen. You should see a green circle and arrow on the website if it takes.

3. Finally, I recommend fully deleting DJIGO on your phone and then reinstalling. Go through the set up and give DJIGO access to your camera, gps and blue tooth. Use the new login password and approve all the prompts. If you start fresh, the blue tooth error should be gone and you should see a list of devices on DJIGO which you can then connect to.

My issue, like many of you, is that I didn’t use DJIGO for like 6 months and when I tried to open it, the Bluetooth error kept coming up. Refresh DJIGO , reauthorize DJIGO permissions on your phone and you should be back in business. Good luck … not a great app.

Osmo Mobile 2 has great potential

I have been using the Osmo Mobile 2 for just a few hours with my iPhone X on iOS 11.4 and here are my impressions so far. Great stabilizer for a great price. DJIGO worked good. It’s missing 4K 60fps and the use of the 2X camera on the iPhone X. It would be nice to be able to use the 2X optical zoom, rather than digital zoom. That is more important than 4K 60. Stabilizing works better in 1080 than it does in 4K... but both still look really great for a “prosumer” device. Only experienced the “jelly” issue with the built in stability fighting OSMO if I am really banging the device around.

The M button doesn’t make a lot of sense... it sure what it’s best features are yet. I really like the timelapse and motion scenes... plan to use on storm and sky photography.

So far, very impressed with device and app. Let’s hope DJI keeps improving battery life, charging, frame rate, and camera support. Another few months of development and this will earn a 5 Star review.

Well made except for some parts

I use this with the osmo mobile 2 and for the most part it works well. It does what the phone tells it to do, but the tracking feature is awful. When you have it lock onto something, it tracks it until the object changes like you move from one side to the other. Then the osmo will flip around (supposedly trying to find the object again, instead of going to where it was last seen and went) and the only way to get it to lock back on is to reposition the red box exactly where you first made it target or to cancel it and reposition it. In my opinion, it should be able to map the object as you move around it and learn that objects can move and change.

Good except storage

Unlike others I have had no major issues with DJIGO . The auto-follow doesn’t do everything I would like, but that’s more an issue of recognition software limitations than it is DJIGO . For example it will lose you if you’re in a dark area with bright light behind you or if you turn your back on the camera and move around a lot. Overall I’m very happy except the storage. It’s ridiculous that they use their own storage area instead of the camera folder. This makes it a much bigger process when moving movies/photos off your iPhone than it should be. Would be a 5 minute fix, not sure why they don’t address this issue.

DJI stop limiting your aircraft capability on firmware

I download and install the latest software and improvement ware made for example with p3se every time I try to fly far away DJIGO from the Rc speaker says: you rich the maximum distance at 1692 feet now I was able to go almost 6000 feet but before I use to be able to go high as much as 2300 feet now at 400 says you reach the maximum altitude and this is not right- dji should change the writing in the firmware and should let the aircraft be free high and distance without limitation and they can remind you reach the maximum altitude or distance but do not limited let the pilot have the responsibility to choose and let the pilot assume full responsibility
