Worst app, worst store

Is it any surprise that the worst home improvement store has the worst app? Certain other hardware store chains (who I won’t name) make it easy to locate items and shop from home; that’s because those apps are actually, you know, useful and stuff. But year after year, this app continues to roll out an app that appears to be for decorative purposes only.

Beyond that, I wasn’t ok with this app’ useless age discrimination policy during the height of the pandemic (e.g., banning people under the age of 18 from even entering the store), and I haven’t forgotten. It made absolutely no sense, given that kids were never the ones disproportionately affected by the pandemic. Funny how this app didn’t ban older adults, if they were oh so concerned with protecting vulnerable age groups, but then again, why would they? After all, the elderly might actually spend money at their stores, whereas non-paying kids tagging along with their parents were a much safer target for their bias.

Plenty of other options out there for hardware and home repair, where the apps are actually functional and customers of all age are treated with respect. I won’t shop at this app again.

Stop force update!

I like that you can search and locate items in a store with Menards. In fact, that’s my only reason to use Menards . And I HATE, HATE, HATE that every time I’m in the store, looking for an item, I have to update Menards to use it. And there goes my data... and for what? Minor UI update? Why do you have to deprecate the previous version and force us to update every dang freaking time?! I don’t get it: did you ship something earlier that is compromising the integrity of my phone? Either you did, and shame on you, repeatedly, or you did not and NOT every single update you post is so important that I absolutely need to update right here right now on my data plan just to find an item in your store. Please think of your users.

Very poor app and frustrating to use!

How can a company like this app have such a confusing - time consuming - FRUSTRATING APP for anyone to try and use. They purposely have you run a maze to try and find the price or information about the products your only trying to see if they carry it or have it in stock. Once I finally found the product I had been searching for it was another struggle to try and locate the price. I just can’t understand why a top notch company would design and have customers try and navigate this very frustrating app. I have asked family members and friends if they ever have tried this app app and had negative things to say about it. Another thing is it crashes after loading pages trying to reach the product I am looking for including their weekly ads page.
this app will you kindly do something better with your app?

Next-to-useless…

Menards is terrible! And I haven’t been much more a fan of the store of late. The search feature doesn’t even seem to function in the simplest capacity, no matter how specific I get about what I’m searching for. The “show item in store” feature is useless too. If I need a very specific plumbing fixture for example, I don’t need Menards to tell me it’s in the plumbing section… (and that’s if the search feature even gets me THAT far!) How about providing aisle and bay numbers like Lowe’s and Home Depot do? That may make some people’s skin crawl to hear those 2 names in comparison to this store, but at least they have something right. Follow the lead of those who have gotten it right, even if you don’t like them. You’re only hurting yourself and future business if you don’t. My actual rating was 0 stars.

It’s okay I guess

Menards seems to be helpful in locating items in the store or seeing availability, but one thing that still seems to be a problem is the rebates. 6-8 weeks for snail mail processing? How in this day and age can we not redeem through Menards with bar and QR code’s? It would be one thing if I was getting cash in return, but it’s store credit. I’m sure this app can handle a processing period to get their money back. But again, we’re getting store credit only to be used there. I remember getting checks from companies for cash in that timeframe and was able to be used wherever I chose. Maybe it’s time to do something different in how loyal customers redeem their store credit within an acceptable amount of time.

Consumer Alert

App will process your payment for pickup orders then provide no receipt or record of the transaction in your account (serious bug). Without a transaction number there is no way to look up a transaction. The only recourse is to find the one person (took us 3 service desks and 4 associates) in the store that can look up the transaction and print out a receipt. Short of that customers have to call their credit card issuer to dispute payment.

The payment processor should not be processing transactions for Menards and Apple should remove Menards from Menards store until the payment processing issues are corrected - in my opinion because customers are charged and don’t have clear recourse. Customer service was so awful deleted Menards and won’t go back to store anymore.

App keeps crashing

I’m using the latest iOS update (14.5), and have not been able to use Menards since I download it. Every time I open Menards it just crashes. I downloaded the update today, and it’s still crashing.

I tried a couple of different troubleshooting steps to see if I could fix it, but I’m still having the same issues. I can get Menards to stay open if I don’t sign into my account. As soon as I sign into my account Menards just crashes. Regardless if I sign into my account during setup or if I skip it during setup and log in once I get to the Home Screen it crashes.

Menards is unusable for me so I just uninstalled it. I’ve downloaded two or three different updates since I downloaded Menards , and neither have fixed the crashing issue I’m having.

Search function is hot garbage

Wouldn’t it be great if you could use Menards to search for a product and confirm that this app carries it for making the trip over? Well, that would require search functionality that Menards has never been able to muster. It’s almost like the search purposely brings up randomized product results. Searching for galvanized deck screws? Here’s 3,246 results - 6 are screws (not galvanized) and 42 are galvanized items but not screws but hey, are you sure you didn’t mean aluminum rivets, spray paint, birdseed or 6” PVC pipe? Trust me, it’s faster and less confusing to just drive to the store and take your chances.

Menards Rebate Program is Terrible

You advertise your difficult to use and punitive rebate program on TV and the radio and it only reminds me of all the “rebates” I didn’t get. Either because the time was too short or they just don’t show up even after jumping through all the hoops. You should digitize your loyalty program or get rid of it all together. A better model would be like Kohl’s cash. You get it instantly and it drives return traffic to your store. They even honor it when it is expired. Their rebate/ loyalty program evokes positive emotions. I like your store and most of your products but your rebate/loyalty program is the worst in the industry and advertising it only drives your customers to the competition. Maybe their prices are higher but they don’t play games with my time or emotions.

App stuck in update loop -Fixed

After writing the original review, the developer responded by the next day with an updated version that fixed the problem. As a result I have added to my review and updated my star rating. Original review starts here, The latest update is broken. When I open Menards it displays a box saying update, when I touch the update button it takes me to the Apple App Store which says I have the latest version. Menards not useable in its current version on my phone.

Marketing a rebate

I completely agree with the other reviews on this, it doesn’t take much to realize they just want to advertise some thing, which is actually nothing, if they really want you to save money they would just have legitimate sale prices, and not try to hide the fact that you have to jump through hoops, and wait six weeks to get a check, that then you have to deposit into your account, and during that whole time just plain hope that you’ll actually get the rebate check, trust me I have had rebate checks that never make it to me, it makes me feel like they see consumers as gullible and stupid, a very bad and poor marketing decision, they need to trust that their customers are as smart as them.

Takes forever to load results

Searching for 32 x 20 basement windows it starts it’s spinning deal and it spins an spins then then errors out and says try again later I tried again later and did the same thing. Also don’t spell a word wrong search results come back zero. Another thing is this app item descriptions are usually different then Home Depot and Lowe’s and you can’t use the same description or comes back with zero results or something you didn’t even search. Whether at home or in the store have same issues. Only reason I keep Menards on my phone is to find out if it’s 11% off week an then after the rebate it’s the same price or close to Home Depot or Lowes everyday price.

Update -

UPDATE:
The developers reach out and told me the release had issues, but was now fixed. I was finally able to install the update and Menards is usable again. Still not the best app, but functional.

ORIGINAL:
Menards was not great to begin with. I wasn’t expecting much from a regional hardware store. However, this review is coming after the update yesterday for “minor bug fixes”. Turns out that Menards won’t work any more, it just keeps telling me to update even though it is already updated. Deleted Menards , reinstalled, same issue. Not worth my time.

So many notifications!

Yesterday my little red app icon notification counter said 73 messages. I opened Menards to find I had one message. I deleted it and the red icon went away. Today, I get another notification that indicates I have 74 messages. I open it to find one and delete it. I don’t have any other issues with Menards, but the inaccurate count of notifications on Menards is a bit annoying. It just keeps incrementing from the last number it displayed instead of restarting the counter when you receive a new notification.

By

Stop forcing push notifications!

I like being able to use Menards to find the stuff that I need. I like being able to check out and go pick up the order. I even like the wish list feature. But the notifications are incessant and unstoppable. You can go into the preferences and turn them off. Close Menards , reopen Menards , and they’re all set like they were before. A couple of times a week I will have a badge number of like 65 on the icon and I will have done nothing with Menards the entire week. It’s ridiculous. So I’m turning off all notifications.

Ok app and rebates

I don’t know why all the bad ratings on Menards . I am a regular user for in store purchases and it works for me. Two areas that could use some work are item locations in the store and the search function. I have found the free guest WiFi in some stores to be very slow, so could account for some complaints. I rebate a lot and have always received my rebates. Rebate speed did take a hit with the 11% all the time but always come and getting better.

Needs Dark Mode

Overall, good app that shows products in the store, and their location. Have Menards open pretty much every time I go to this app.

One glaring omission is a lack of night / dark mode. I know it sounds dumb on the surface, but more of us are realizing staring at a white background isn’t good or easy on the eyes, where as a black background with white / gray text is much, much nicer. So many apps have that feature now, please implement it on this one and Menards is pretty much perfect.

By

WHY.

I don’t understand how often Menards gets broken by updates. I mean major breaks. Now I can’t even log in. Was signed in and adding things to my cart over the weekend to use as a shopping list, today was asked to log in, now Menards thinks I have the wrong username/password. Verified on my laptop that I wasn’t mistaken, Menards still doesn’t agree. Changed my password using my laptop, still no luck. Deleted Menards and reinstalled it, still no luck. You have got to be kidding me. Can’t even log in now.

By

So so.

The item placement isn’t completely accurate- not sure if that is app or store issue. Spent 30 min looking for something Menards said was outside in the garden center & had to have someone look it up & found out it was inside the store.

Also, I thought Menards used to display aisle number..? Now it just gives approximate store locations..it makes findings things really time consuming without the aisle number! Or if it didn’t before, I would definitely like to see that happen!

Thanks.

Broken - Updated

Update: very atypically of developers, these devs quickly fixed the break and returned Menards to the helpful shopping aid it once was. Furthermore, they responded to my review and did not ask me to change it. So, naturally they deserve me changing it to reflect their above average customer service. Thanks dev team!

App says I need an update. App store says I do not. Stuck in endless loop. App is broken completely now.

Fix the in store tab

I am a contractor and look up 100’s of products a week and search for instock options from 6 different stores in my area to keep my jobs moving. I use Menards all day showing clients their options and to compare prices and availability. I just did this update this morning and now for every product have to use refine and categorize by pick up In store only. Nobody has time for this. I’ve never written a review for anything but this has totally screwed me over to the point I have to take my business to Lowe’s or homedepot because I can’t deal with making decisions in the minutes it takes your updated app that used to take seconds. Please do not take scheduled 4-6weeks like you do most updates.

Edit: Wow 4 hours later and this issue is fixed! Either it was a known issue and the patch was already under works or I had something to do with it which I doubt. Either way thank you, this app above all the other box stores is catered to the contractor for everyday needs, no one else stocks everyday jobsite materials like this app. Although I did my shopping today at Lowe’s, I will be returning first thing in the am.

Not so great.

Menards is difficult to use unless you know exactly what you’re looking for WORD FOR WORD. If not, you’re going to find everything you don’t need. As for the shopping cart, if you close Menards then come back is multiplies your items by two. So if you’re not careful you’ll pay twice as much for your items, and have fun with the return process that kills anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour of your time. Menards looks like it was done on the cheap, and that company should at least have enough common sense to realize you can’t build websites on the cheap. Would you build an entire store and have all the locations of the products in a different area instead of what system V is saying? No, because it not only aggravates the customer but it also makes the company look bad. Time is a very valuable thing. Myself and many others will gladly go to another store and pay a few cents more to save time and stress. I love this app but if Menards doesn’t get a few serious repairs I’m just going to have to go to a different store.

Why bother?

First time using online ordering for immediate in store pick up I ordered 3 items.. it showed them as in stock.
Long story short 2 of them were put as backordered and even though they were able to take the money out of my account immediately it took them 4-5 days to process refund. Keep in mind these were items I needed for work that day and they weren’t in stock at any store near me so I could just go make second purchase? Like that should even be an option anyways. Plus the staff were less than helpful in any way and barely knew about anything they were asked. Even though it was in “ their department” waste of time gas and money completely. Buyer beware.. implementation of tech by a company that still uses a mail in rebate system ( because they know most people won’t bother mailing them in obviously ) is probably sub par. But in store if you want your items and buy elsewhere if you need to order online. The employees blamed it on expired / outdated inventory system too.. fun

Quirky

Menards is quirky. At one time, I was able to create several lists without having an account or signing in. Now, those lists can’t be edited and can’t even be selected to add items to; they are not visible leaving “wish list” as the only option. If you create an account, you still can’t access the lists you previously created. There should be an option to export your lists, then an “import list” option for continuity. It would also be helpful to be able to move an item to a different list and view options such as “view by date added” or “view by name.” The search function needs work, too, as Menards wants to fit your item into pre-determined search parameters. And rather than show a blip on the store map for item location, proving the exact isle and bin where the item is located would save considerable time at the store. Menards is okay for finding pricing but not very well organized.

Terrible!!!!!!

Updates are so inconsistent and always buggy. First, items in my cart always seem to multiply the amount of each item each time I revisit Menards ; this has been an ongoing problem. Secondly, right off the bat when I go to search for an item, it directs me to subcategory selections, which is fine, but when I select the category, it will state 89 items available within the search but only show 15 and when I click on “in store” it shows two totally unrelated items. I noticed that when this occurs, a four digit number, (presumably the category of the article number) shows up in the search bar and not the item I was searching for. Menards is quite literally useless if I can’t find what I am looking to purchase, with money; talk about lost revenue as I will not shop here if this remains unusable.

By

“Lists” issues

Lots of problems with the “lists” on Menards . I will take the time to go through ads and add things to my “wish list”. Get messages that items have been successfully added to list.

9 times out of ten when I am at store and click on list to see what I need to buy, I get a message that I don’t have any items on list. Occasionally they will pop up, so, the list is there, but most of the time Menards can’t find it. VERY frustrating.

By

Good for lists but qty is a bug

I've been using it to make lists for things I think about before I forget them. The bad part is that I'll put in that I need 3 of something, come back in tomorrow and it'll be 6, 12, etc. you get the point. For some things I don't remember how many I really needed originally. Also good for using where in store to find things. Overall still helpful. Maybe a easier print option for a list to carry in.

By

Keep up the good work

Menards is herring better and better! I use it as a resource all the time and it’s nice to see the continuity improvements the development team has put into it. One feature request: produce reviews. I know it’s hard to get off the ground , but it would be nice to see some review for different products you carry. And your selection is much better local orange store! Great work!

By

Mostly works

I usually don’t have an issue with Menards . I am able to find what I am looking for and browse the ads easily. My biggest complaint and from the other reviews is the list section. I never had problems with the lists until a couple of updates ago. Now they are spotty at best. The only other complaint I have is sometimes search will not work at all. At that point I head to the website.

By

Too often tells me “Update Required”

Menards is useful when it works, but it seems like every other time I try to use it, Menards won’t function, telling me I need to update Menards before I can use it. This usually happens while I’m in the store (not on WiFi) so I can’t do the update at that time. A well-designed app wouldn’t restrict a user just because they don’t have the latest update installed.

By

Worst customer service ever!!!

Could not find anyone in the store to help us find what we needed then when we did finally find help they just told us where to find it. Then we went to pick up our sheet rock and 2x4’s and guess what no one around to help do I had to walk to the front of the store to get help meanwhile my husband loaded 2x4’s himself. A young man did load our sheet Rock but husband had To help load that then they lost a receipt with our rebate on him just very upsetting I’m going to finish my shopping at the Hastings this app they have way better customer service

By

Poor search functionality

I really like the fact that I can purchase building materials in Menards then pick them up without having to go in the store. It’s one of the reasons that I choose this app over the competition. However, the search function is about the worst that I have experienced. I can be very specific for an item yet it will bring up hundreds of items that have nothing to do with what I am actually looking for. Surely Menards designers can do better.

By

Wi-Fi

Menards is pretty good. Helpful when finding what you need and if it’s available in your local store. Would be better if it listed the aisle # so u can find easier when you get to the store. Also would be better if stores had Wi-Fi so once your in the store you could use Menards . Some areas of the store don’t get strong cellular signal & app is useless.

By

Navigation Issues

Navigation is making me not want to use Menards. If I’m browsing categories I can use a left swipe to get to the previous category. If I’m browsing a bottom level category like “Retaining Wall Block”, I can't swipe left to get to “Landscaping Materials”. There is a tiny back button in the top left, but no matter how precise I try to be with that button, I end up clicking in the search bar. It takes about 10 tries to get to the parent category.

By

Bad update

After updating just now the revision won’t let me login. In past the data auto filled. Really liked that. Now it doesn’t even recognize me when I type in my email and password. I know that they are correct. Haven’t had a chance to see if desktop is messed up too or not. Like most folks that use Menards I’m out on a job and don’t have a desktop computer handy. Really wanted to check on availability of items for job before just sending someone out to get it if you even have it.
