UPDATE: they redeemed themselves

shoutout to the developers for listening to their users and taking the time to boost the servers to allow Musicboard to run efficiently !! it’s very fast and the user interface is wonderful ... there are a few bugs remaining, like a white screen when looking up full album titles (but not segments of titles, interestingly), but overall it’s much better than it was last week.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: while this is such a good idea , it seems like Musicboard developers skipped like 4 steps in the design process and released Musicboard full of glitches , crashes , and (allegedly) open to hacking !! it’s a shame because I would be an AVID user of Musicboard if it weren’t so poorly executed

A word of warning…

Musicboard is just letterbox for music. It functions almost identically and is, like letterbox, a great way to see what’s what. I recommend it to anyone who is trying to discover new music or has some interesting takes on music, but I personally did not enjoy Musicboard. Music is different from a film and much more subjective, so much of the opinions represented are about people’s personal take on pieces of music rather than a criticism of what the artists actually made. This is fine for enjoying or disliking music, but makes much of the reviews you’ll read feel “one note” and I found myself bored of Musicboard after the first few reviews I made. It’s just not as enjoyable as letterbox and it feels like copying elements of that format work against Musicboard . Also, many of the people on Musicboard are a little all consumed with their tastes; their music taste is their personality which left me feeling empty. There are good critics and interesting takes on music, but most are pretty trite with little to add. I also have no ideas on how Musicboard could be improved from its current point, other than formatting it completely differently.

love the concept... still not fully optimized

really enjoying Musicboard , but there are so many issues still. for example, Musicboard struggles A LOT when searching for anything. it does a search and gives results every time a letter is typed in the search bar, causing the user to wait several seconds before the actual wanted result appears. this is probably the most annoying issue i’m having. sometimes after many searches Musicboard just gives up and just gives a white screen. one time i was making a list and had added like 30 songs only to have them all deleted because of that issue. definitely not going to make more lists until that is resolved.

every time you review something, a green bar comes down over the top to notify you of your review, and it blocks the back button. you just have to wait until it goes away. not a huge issue but still annoying. there is a similar problem when adding things to “listen later” which could easily be solved by just replacing the ⏰ a ✅ to show that it has been added.

there are also doubles for all albums in the discographies for many artists which is annoying since the reviews/ratings are often split between the two. not sure if it’s separating clean & explicit versions or what.

Musicboard will also log me out periodically for no apparent reason and tell me that i’ve been logged out.

those are the biggest ones i can think of but i would love to see Musicboard fully optimized and take off! 💚

Love the concept…app is rough around the edges though

It’s nice having a Letterboxd equivalent for music and a much more modern answer to RateMyMusic for the mobile generation, but truthfully Musicboard can be frustrating to use. There are a lot of UI interactions that don’t flow in an expected manner, many buttons are not adapted to dark mode and appear black on the dark background (not to mention there is no sync color scheme with device option), contributing new albums can be infuriating due to switching between apps and having this app time out and lose all your typed information with no quicksave feature, etc etc. I see there haven’t been updates in 4 months and I seriously hope the developers do not consider the service a stable product because the road ahead is long but promising if they will put in the work for making it a good experience for the user.

still needs work

This idea is great, a letterbox equivalent for music. The issue is that they basically just ripped off artist and album information from a streaming service and integrated that into their database. That may sounds just fine but the problem is that tons and tons of music is not available on streaming platforms and there is no way for a user to submit a page for an album or an artist. In addition to that, streaming services have a lot of duplicates releases for albums as well, they also put inaccurate release dates a lot of times. None of these things can be changed currently. They should have a system where users can submit a request for a particular release/artist or edit a current release. These requests could be approved by getting confirmation from a select number of other users. Right now, Musicboard is alright, but it is vastly imperfect.

Great app with a lot of potential

As a frequent user of Letterboxd, I was very intrigued by Musicboard. I have used RateYourMusic regularly, but with no app and horrible UI/UX, I would rarely return.

this app is a fantastic start, and if they continue to improve Musicboard , it will be as popular as Letterboxd.

To the developers:
-Add an iPad app and desktop website
-Make searching easier, such as searching by decade or year (maybe this in Musicboard and I haven’t found it yet)
-A “hard press” when in a list to quickly rate an album rather than having to open the album page would be really nice, especially for new users trying to rate albums in bulk
-Letterboxd has a great feature to quickly rate films for new users so you can build up your profile quickly. I found it a little cumbersome to go through decades and decades of albums.

It’s a great app. Download it.

Also, add some sort of subscription. I’d happily pay $2-$3 a month for Musicboard just to support its further development.

fun app; annoying bug

I’ve enjoyed Musicboard in the first day that I’ve used it. It’s a super fun idea but there’s one bug that makes it quite annoying to use for me. While this might just be a personal issue, Musicboard logs me out every few minutes that I use it. I get a dialogue box that says, “You have been logged out.” It proceeds to make me log back in. This is very annoying, but it’s understandable. I hope to see this patched and I am excited to continue to use Musicboard.

Musicboard for music.

I give Musicboard five stars because I know it will attract a lot of fans over time. It also increases the number of music fans. I am very happy that a public rating website was designed for music as well.

Currently, the only drawback of Musicboard is that we can not enter the Tracks page. For example, when I want to enter the track page of "Comfortably Numb", I am directed to the album "The Wall". In this situation, in order to understand the rating number of this track, I have to go directly to the website.

Some bugs with the latest update

I absolutely adore Musicboard. I love it so much that I became a pro member. However, with the recent update there have been a few issues I have come across. The biggest being Musicboard works great for two minutes then just completely gives up and loads for eternity. The other is when I’m arranging lists I have an iPhone 13 pro and the list is cut off at the bottom to a point I can’t scroll to. Every time I try to move or remove a song my phone thinks I want to close Musicboard .

By

Great, one thing

In the list feature I noticed this recently. I can update the music in the list fine, but the ‘update list’ button keeps spinning, and I’m unable to click on it. If I close the list it still updates what’s in the list with no pop up. However, if I change try to change the text in the ‘Information’ spot, I can’t update it, and I can’t exit and save without the ‘Are you sure?’ pop up coming.

I like it, but it’s missing something

I do like Musicboard. I think it has a lot of potential to be a Letterboxd for music lovers. I love reading reviews from people and I love the community surrounding it. The only thing I would love added to it is the ability to just catalog music without having to rate it. I would love to have the option to be able to check that I’ve listened to it and add catalog it, similar to the “watched” option on Letterboxd. It is a great app and I’m looking forward to seeing what comes from it in the future.

By

Two major things that need to be added

I think there should be a favorites part of the bio where you can put your favorite artists and albums (say five max per). I also think that, and this is minor, when searching, albums should come before songs. Most people are rating albums over songs so I think it’s best to appeal more towards that.

By

It will improve a lot in time, just missing a few important features

I love the UI and most of it's biggest problems will be fixed as the community grows, but one thing that really annoys me is the inability to write and leave a review without a star rating. I would love to share my thoughts on albums but I just don't like assigning numerical value to them so it would be nice if you could just leave a review if that's all you want to do, like Letterboxd.

By

Amazing app with tasteless fans lol

I like the concept and i was waiting for Musicboard to be published.
I always loved to review albums in my notes app, and now i can share them with everyone. Also, I wish that in future updates you’ll make it less laggy and little bit smoother and faster. But overall amazing app.

By

So much potential...

I was not expecting the UI to be this good on Musicboard. It is really well made, and really well organized.

However, the user base is just too small right now for it to be “the Letterboxd of music.” This isn’t really a problem with Musicboard itself, and I’m sure it can be fixed one more people start learning about it.

Beautiful App

I don’t know how this never existed before, it’s such a simple idea, but it’s perfect. Musicboard works fine, although it can be slow at times, but other than that, I have no problems with it.

They should add a feature where you can ask questions and discuss topics

By

Stans Ruining It

Musicboard is perfectly fine for what it is. It allows you to rate and organize the music you listen to, cool. But, Musicboard has a rather big issue with stans attacking other artist and tanking their score so that their favorite artist have the best ratings. It’s really rather annoying and ruins the whole point of Musicboard . I know Music Board is not directly responsible for this, but Musicboard ’s quality is hindered by the hoards.

By

Search function

The search function needs improvement. I often can’t find an album so I have to find the singer/players first, then click into their page to find the album in the list of their works

By

App barely works after new update

I have been using Musicboard since the day it came out to track what albums I'm listening to. Since the last update a week or two ago, every function takes forever to load and I can't scroll all the way to bottom when trying to edit my lists. Hopefully it gets fixed soon otherwise I'll find a replacement

By

Longgggg leading times

I really really like the idea of Musicboard, and I’m going to try and continue using it, but there some things that are just too big to ignore. Musicboard loads nothing at all, and if it does, it takes minutes to simply look up an album or publish a review. It’s just super aggravating and I hope to see it fixed soon

By

Great concept; needs fixing

I’ve been wanting Letterboxd but for music for a while so I was really excited when I heard about this app. Overall look/aesthetic is fine, navigating through Musicboard is alright cause it’s a little slow but the main thing right now is it just doesn’t fully function. I made three lists last night along with a few album reviews. Went back this morning and all my lists and reviews are gone. Even though it says I have 3 lists, when I go to the list page, nothing. And the home page isn’t fully loading, just showing me top trending artists and nothing else.
Just needs to be worked on more and get the bugs fixed so when that happens I will be looking forward to using it more.

Has promise, but doesn’t work

As many have said in the past, the concept for Musicboard is amazing. I would love an app where I could review and keep track of my music. However, every aspect is BROKEN. It’s amazing I was even able to create an account. Every time I try to do anything, I get an error. Even searching for an artist is a difficult task.

Also, half of the stuff I listen to isn’t an option. I listen to a lot of European bands, and while some may be listed, their full discography is absent. Some don’t have any music listed at all.

Musicboard has potential, but where it stands now it’s unusable.

By

Terrible security and lag

I understand the server overload but the security on Musicboard is nonexistent. The lag is horrendous. And many users have reported being logged into other accounts. Until security is added and the ability to delete accounts (I’m a little doubtful!) I cannot raise my score higher. A shame, too, because the library is quite comprehensive and a social alternative to RateYourMusic (a website that fulfills the same idea without necessarily the same social networking aspects or accessibility) would be lovely.

By

Really Awesome Idea but

Musicboard is an awesome concept and could be great, but not everything is functioning correctly. Even on WiFi or LTE I get an error message on certain things I try to access. Additionally I think the UI could be improved to be more aesthetically interesting. It’s pretty basic right now but maybe in several updates it’ll be where it can be!

By

3.75 tbh

Concept: 10/10
Aesthetic: 9.5/10
Navigation: 8/10
I’m sure Musicboard will take off soon and I’m excited for it BUT - and idk if it’s just my phone - it is SO slow. Glitches a ton and takes ages to load every new screen. I know it’s new and I’m not expecting it to be perfect but it does test my already limited patience

By

Still hoping for the promise of the concept

Okay so at around this time yesterday, there were about 30 reviews and now we’re in the triple digits. I’ve been waiting for a “Letterboxd For Music” for a while now, finding RYM too clinical and cliquey.
Musicboard is so buggy, I haven’t even been able to successfully create an account!!! This leads me to believe the name is blowing up, and I PRAY the developers can live up to the name: I’ve been looking for something like this for a long, long time.

By

Great App, hopefully the bugs are fixed

Its a very nice and clean way to rate music, but unfortunately its riddled with glitches and random crashes that you have to remedy by uninstalling the entire app and reinstalling... all in the first 30 minutes of my using of it. Still, its got potential to be a great tool for music listeners, as long as its issues are resolved.

By

Great idea, just doesn’t work.

Couldn’t log in for 40 minutes, had to delete and reinstall, once i logged in it was very very slow and laggy to the point where i was unable to change my name or refresh my notifications or even get into them. Please fix the bugs! Otherwise, its a great app

By

Too Slow to Open the App

The concept of Musicboard is really cool, but every time I try opening Musicboard it never works or it takes forever to load the page. I know for a fact that many people who also use Musicboard are experiencing the same issues that I am having and it is incredibly frustrating. The only way to fix this is to have an update on Musicboard to make it run smoother and faster.

By

Great Potential, Needs Serious Work

I’m willing to give this two stars based on the concept alone. However, with this current version, I can’t even create an account. Hopefully this gets fixed soon since I really like the idea of a Letterboxd-style platform for music.

By

unresponsive

I’m excited to try Musicboard , and I’ve been waiting for an app like this, but when i go to create a user it won’t let me. it just ignores the request.

By

Worst app ever.

This garbage app is so poorly designed it literally will not even allow users to create or log into their accounts, let alone make lists or organize and rate music. Not only that, the developer has been flooding paid ads all over every social app. It’s likely full of spyware even for those few who were able to log in. AVOID at all costs.

By

JUST WHAT I WANTED

I know the server traffic was too high and they’re fully shut down now I’m really hoping you guys can get the servers back up cause this is exactly Musicboard I wanted

By

Good, but flawed

Love the concept! I just really want them to add a sort by date released option! Also fix some minor glitches.
