About AppChoices

What is AppChoices?

AppChoices is a mobile app that allows users to control interest-based advertising on their mobile devices. It provides transparency with participating companies and lets users limit their collection of cross-app data for interest-based ads. The app is brought to you by the Digital Advertising Alliance and is backed up by the DAA’s independent accountability program. AppChoices lets users opt out from interest-based advertising with a particular company or choose all companies with one simple click. The app also allows California residents to submit requests to opt out of the sale of personal information under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).

Ditto to { BATMAN }’s review of 3 yrs ago; Doesn’t Work!

When I opened AppChoices and followed what seemed intuitive to opt out of one or all advertisers, I didn’t receive any feedback indicating the settings changed. At that point I (foolishly?) decided to read the instructions. It instructs to “simply move the switch from On to Off next to the advertising company you wish to opt out.” In my case, tapping the “digital switch” changes selection from On to Send, but nothing ever activates or verified anything being Sent. I then went to the Reviews to see if I am the only one having this issue, which would indicate to me that the problem is me and not with AppChoices . I came upon a review written 3 yrs ago by {BATMAN} in which he writes, “...when you view the list of ad companies, and try and follow the instructions to opt out, the opt out button doesn't work. It just does nothing.” That states perfectly, my experience today as well.

So much has changed in this world over the past 3 years, but AppChoices becoming functional is not one of them.

The app works the way it was designed

Just a reminder because lots of people are stupid and don’t read. This WILL NOT disable ads. This is only to opt out of PERSONALIZED ads. This will stop advertising companies from tracking your web/app usage and hitting you with ads targeted toward your interests. Instead you will be blasted with general ads not specifically aimed at you or your interests. The only reason I gave it one star. Is because the DAA is garbage and ads are pointless altogether. Just download AppChoices opt out for all then delete it. All set! If you don’t want to see ads anymore get Adblock. I would recommend doing both. If you use only adblockers your app/internet usage is still tracked and sent back to the DAA but you just won’t see the personal ads they send you. So do both. Then they cant steal your info or hit you with ads. But seriously ads are garbage and they don’t work. If we want your product we will buy it. But spamming me with ads does the opposite. I won’t buy your garbage

Not working -multiple reports

Can’t get past the first page. See same reports all over.
Bit consumer friendly. Fix and update page.

Nice Interface, Does it’s Job...

People need to realize, the NDAA is trying to get online advertisers to Voluntarily honor your request(s) to stop sending unwanted ads. The same principle as “Do Not Track” requests are sent. AppChoices simply provides a more “user-friendly” version of NDAA’s own.

Until we, the end-users of the Internet, (who control the income flow by our purchasing power), elect politicians who believe in Fair Market Principals & end-user privacy rights over corporate “entity rights”, unwanted ads will be the status quo.

If it helps....

I very rarely write app reviews, long story short AppChoices works exactly as described, sends requests to opt out from companies’ aggregating and selling your data for ‘interest-based’ ads. If it helps reduce creepy targeted ads I’m all for it. There are numerous 1 star reviews, some may be attributed to expectations of ad-blocking. I gave it 5 as it worked as intended and submitted/sent opt out requests accordingly.

Opt out button doesn’t work. Seems useless

So, I read the reviews, positive ones said you need to read AppChoices and it tells you how it works and what it does. However when you view the list of ad companies, and try and follow the instructions to opt out, the opt out button doesn’t work. It just does nothing. Same goes for the select all button, nothing. It’s basically an info app at this point. I mean, I'm an app developer and so I don’t typically have issues figuring out how an app is supposed to work, this one just seems broken. Am I missing something? Is it only broken on some iPhones?

To, “Frustrating”

I had the same issue at first until I followed the exact instructions, mainly the part about allowing AppChoices to track, then went back to home page on AppChoices , repeated the process, and it allowed them all 46 to turn off. Hopefully this helps!

App Not Very Helpful

Very few of the buttons worked. The ones that did led me to web pages that were incomplete. E.g. “for more information. . .” (End of page, no link to more information).
When clicking on “opt out” for any given website, it would take me to a nebulous page with a box that said “off” with a check mark. Does that mean “opting out” was turned off? Or that that marketing company’s ads were turned off for me? The block with a check mark could not be toggled; not that I even know what toggling the check mark would even imply or accomplish.

Worthless

I downloaded AppChoices recommended by my Google ad settings after much digging into layers of useless obscure info on setting ad choices. Since I do not live in CA I chose the IBA option which populated a list of offenders. Numerous attempts following given directions got me nowhere. The list supposedly has an option to turn them on or off which does not work. I feel like it just reintroduced and reinforced my information to the offenders yet again by AppChoices rerouting me to their websites. Google duped me once again.

Deception!

Wow, the real purpose of AppChoices is to get you to turn the TRACKING setting ON. The ‘alphabet’ agencies that participate in this app and AdChoices are all ‘self-regulating’ - meaning they do nothing meaningful to diminish their use of data about you! They only want to provide the gullible with a false sense of control! Actually, they get you to navigate TO the various companies website, where the are only bound by that sites terms and conditions, gaining your ad ID and other information from your device, DIRECTLY!

By

Not sure if app has a positive effect.

In order for AppChoices to work you have to disable the feature in your iPhone privacy settings that limits ad tracking. I don’t know if AppChoices provides greater privacy protection than opting out of ad tracking but it seems that I have to choose between one or the other.

100% useless. Do not bother to download.

Don’t bother to download. It’s 100% useless. You get to options. One option says you can select on or off. But 100% not true. You can’t change the ON switch. Second option only allows you to SEND a notification to the listed company that you want to opt out. Only a dozen or so companies are listed. Yet we all know we all must have about 100 companies tracking us. What a waste of developer hours.

This app works, if you can read

If your a “Select All” or “Off” selections are not working you may have Limit Ad Tracking enabled on your device.

Go to Settings > Privacy > Advertising then turn off Limit Ad Tracking and return to AppChoices .

Love this app

My name is Candace Doh and I just want to say thanks a lot to the maker of AppChoices... I appreciate it/everything it does. I read the other reviews and I agree with the reviews that say "works for the ppl who actually read"......... I really really appreciate AppChoices.... it means a lot to me.... just saying

This app is a scam.

I don't know what laws your trying to circumvent by even offering this, but AppChoices doesn't work and is otherwise useless. It straight up does not allow you to opt-out. It dangles links to give the impression you have an option, but the links are unresponsive. Btw, I tried to opt-out on their website and although it recognizes your choice it immediately resets once you logout. Anyone who works in this industry does so with a specious motive to begin with, and AppChoices ain't helping their credibility ✌🏼

Look at Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA) Funding

This is another intentionally terrible app that is created by industry to self-police. It reminds me if the free tax filing website that is made by the tax companies and it is trash on purpose. We need to get $ out of politics so we can have control of our property and data, until that happens we will have these terrible solutions that were likely brought on by lobbyists influencing policy at the behest of these large advertising firms.

Inactive buttons

What they don't tell you is to go to your phone's privacy settings and enable ad tracking. Then follow the directions in AppChoices . Then go back and disable tracking again.

AppChoices needs to have tracking enabled to do its job but they don't bother to tell you that.

Appchoices is a lie

Like most of the ways advertising companies provide to opt out, this app is a complete waste of time. As documented in many other reviews here, AppChoices doesn’t work at all.

Probably this app’s real purpose is to show a token effort at compliance with the law: And, if they gather information from AppChoices , they’ll use that data too. So it’s just another instance of Internet advertising consumer fraud and abuse.

Are you listening Apple?

No more creepy ads!

People rate AppChoices low because they expect ads to go away. That’s not how the Internet works! AppChoices stops creepy Data brokers in their track!
For that, it works perfectly

Literally non-functional.

Wonderful idea for an app, and would be great if it were actually useable! Four of the six times I tried to open it, it immediately crashed. The other two I got to the page after clicking “get started” with the two buttons for internet based advertising choice and opt-out. I clicked one and waited a while. Nothing. Clicked the other. Nothing. ...?

I guess not many people actually READ anymore

I rely pretty heavily on reviews for apps in my browsing and shopping on AppChoices Store but if I went by was the star ratings alone I would get things wrong too often. Taking the time to actually read through the reviews for AppChoices, I noticed that people give me a negative reviews are complaining that he does not do something it does not even advertise/claim that it will do. AppChoices is designed to opt you out of receiving personalized ads. NOT block ads all together. So far it does seem to do a fair job at killing the personalization of ads that I see. It used to be that I could browse/shop for a particular item in one app like eBay and then use my web browser and see an ad pop up for the exact item I viewed elsewhere. I was even seeing adds related to subjects I had previously browsed online in private mode popping up everywhere no matter how many times I went to add settings and opted out which was extremely frustrating for me. So far I am seeing improvement although it does take some time for some settings to update.

Cannot use :(

When I downloaded AppChoices I ran the program, I clicked the "select all" button and nothing happened. I tried to uninstall 2 apps manually and nothing happened when I clicked the opt out button for them either??? AppChoices is totally worthless and being deleted from my phone, save yourself the time!

Error?

Can't opt out of Rubicon Project. I don't know if it's an issue with DAA or Rubicon so I'm not going to make a big stink about it.

Bogus app

AppChoices doesn’t work. Opening AppChoices , I see a list of advertisers with “Opt out” to their right. I press “Opt out” and it opens another view with a description of the advertiser and “off” at the bottom. I press “off” presuming this will disable the advertiser and nothing happens...

Back to the main view, pressing “choose all” does nothing.

AppChoices is not usable.

By

Useless.

Appears to force the user to repeatedly click on it's icon to reject the reaccuring ads when you have already "opted out" of the listed companies invasive banners. Most ad blockers are useless imo. It's like you download an app to reduce the intrusive ads and instead you find more popping up.

Does what it says!

Select all does exactly what it says. It opts you out of all.
