Good, but could be better

Used CloudAhoy a couple of times flying. I agree it works well for debriefs and as a tracker. I would like to see more options for a background map. Such as ELAs or Sectionals. If CloudAhoy was somehow able to integrate with ForeFlight, for tracking that would be killer. I like the idea of being able to select the instrument approach you flew, however I wish CloudAhoy would show your course and altitude as an overlay over the approach plate. I feel this is a great idea for an app, however it the functionality of it is severely limited. If it were updated to allow those features I would rate 5 stars and pay for it. -UH-60M IP.

Don't know

I used to use CloudAhoy with my iPhone 4. It was amazing that CloudAhoy can analyze the maneuvers I'm doing with my training. But ever since I started to use it on my iPhone 5, it just somehow doesn't work. I can see CloudAhoy transmitting data, but when I log in to the website, it will say "insufficient data for debrief". Can anyone tell me is it my phone or is it something to do with iPhone 5?

My First Attempt, Failure!

My first attempt to use CloudAhoy was a failure. To be fair, this was during my BFR / IPC and I must have accidentally turned the phone on airplane mode.
On another attempt, my iPhone showed no GPS signal in this application. My other apps showed location, but CloudAhoy requires a really good signal for tracking flight maneuvers. Mr. Chuck Shavit, with this app, has been very helpful discussing the application and issues that I have had with the application, and because of this, I really believe this application has great potential. I'll report back after my next flight. Thanks for a very hopeful application!

* After several more flights with CloudAhoy, I've really come to like it. The only improvement that I can imagine is that if CloudAhoy is running, it should have an option for "auto start". I often start CloudAhoy , get busy and forget to "start". This should be a fairly easy option to add. Thanks for such a useful training tool.

Great app

Do everything you need to debrief your flights. Automatically your flight will be divided by segments like R or L traffic pattern, go arounds, takeoffs, landings, taxi time. For those who rent the aircraft, you can see air time and ground time difference and compare with Hobbs.

The only stuff not so good is app doesn't allow to review the flights by itself you need to use a internet browser.

Recommend!

Packs full functionality into iPhone app

I've been using this app on my PC and iPad for several months but only recently downloaded it onto my iPhone 6. I was expecting a simplified interface with a reduced set of functionality but was really surprised that they managed to fit it all in. The screen real estate on my phone is minimal but they've incorporated fly-out menus to keep it clean. The this app service on all platforms is simply amazing. I'm working on my instrument rating and it's proven to be an invaluable tool for analyzing my performance. It's especially nice to relax that evening and review the flight in an easy chair from various viewpoints and angles. I use ForeFlight in the cockpit and it exports track logs quickly and easily into this app. CloudAhoy is highly recommended.

Great app

I used CloudAhoy for the first time and was totally awed by how easy it is to set up and that it actually worked the very first time I used it! I love it. I'm amazed at all the info it collects and reports. Great for reviewing your flight and grading yourself on heading and altitude control as well as maneuvers. I did a slow flight, point around a turn and can see how well I did with it. Get CloudAhoy!

Absolutely love this app!

If you are a pilot (and especially student pilot) this is must have app! Record your entire flight and then replay it in Google Maps. CloudAhoy does an amazing job interpolating you GPS recorded positions and the intelligently extrapolating what you were doing e.g., taxi, takeoff, downwind, final etc. It will even overlay wind vectors at every point in your flight. Finally it can overlay your flight over sectionals.

Very cool.

This is a very cool app. It doesn't work perfectly in a glider, but that improvemnt is coming soon. I'm sure it would work flawlessly with a powered airplane (which it was designed for). I was really surprised how little battery juice it used. Most GPS apps completely drain my battery in about 1/2 hour. I had this app on for almost an hour and it only used about 15% of my battery. Super responsive developer. This is too good to be a free app!

Useful and fun

I've used CloudAhoy for a couple of sessions of pattern work. Not only is it useful to guage the consistency and accuracy of pattern and approaches, the visuals with Google Earth are stunning. I'm using an iPhone 4 GPS, so the accuracy of the GPS derived position is not always great. It's fun to debrief and use all the different views available. Can't wait to take on a XC flight. This could be very useful for new students to gauge the quality of their PTS maneuvers and pattern/approach work. And, you can't beat the price!

A Great Flight Debriefer

What a kick! Look at and review your flight after-the-fact. Both the flight altitude view and the pilot view are great. I did notice that the take off was measured a little long and the landing showed me landing actually before I landed but that was probably due to the low altitudes on both. Again, a great app for debriefing and it's fun to see your flight in Google Earth. Extremely simple to use. Just push Start before you take off and Stop after you land.

Awesome tool for any pilot

CloudAhoy is the best app I have see and used for my ipad. I did a short trip from Ca to AZ and was absolutely awed by the "debrief" of the flight. My wife was flying and kept mentioning how dissapointed she was with her flight, when I saw the "cockpit view" and we reviewed the flight she immediately picked up many things we had not noticed during the flight, angle of takeoff, when we started leveling off, if we overshot or undershot, and the view of the turn to base and final.
CloudAhoy is a MUST HAVE for anyone concerned with reviewing their flight after landing.

Thrilled with this app! (V1.9.14)

Based on the mention in "Flying" this month I decided to try out CloudAhoy and web site. It was easy to register and get CloudAhoy installed on my iPhone 4. It's sharing my BadElf GPS with Foreflight and they coexist nicely.

After I'm done flying I can analyze flight data and share it with friends if I feel like it. I especially like the cockpit view playback feature. I sure wish I had this when I was doing my Instrument training (except on those bad days).

It's definitely an app to add to your flying quiver.

Great tool for training, fun to share with passengers

Used this a lot during my PPL training. I still use it when taking people on fun scenic flights. If they nerd out on aviation as much as I do I can share our flight with them and they can see exactly what we did.

Love this App!

Since I found out about CloudAhoy on BeechTalk, I've used it quite often. Great for practicing my commercial maneuvers, and also just for keeping track of my flights. Since I began using Cloud Ahoy, I have been paying much closer attention to how I fly. Every landing for me is now about hitting the numbers and tightening my skills. Seeing your ground roll, practicing short field landings and take-offs, even hitting and maintaining published approach altitudes and fixes.
Interestingly, since I began using CA I fly much more often by hand, and less while on auto-pilot...
CloudAhoy can help you become a better pilot, and can enhance your flight instruction.
The only problem is that sometimes forget to turn it on.
Google earth doesn't work right on the iPad to allow for you to review your flights...
The new functionality to segment and label phases of flight is awesome.
Hard to find a better value.
6 STARS!!!!!!

Great app

This is an excellent app with great support from the author. My first flight I used my BadElf GPS and CloudAhoy stopped logging after about 30 min. The author emailed me to turn off the auto recording setup and start and stop it manually. The program works great.

If an instrument procedure isn't in the database, he will either give you directions to add it yourself, or do it for you. The "3D" debrief with Google Earth is fantastic. Its a great way to see how well you fly your approaches or how much your turns around a point are really circles or if your lazy 8's look like the text books.

Best of all its free. I think its one of the best aviation apps out there for both training and "reliving" your flights.

Awesome app.

Easy to use. Very friendly. Very simple setup. When you are in the cockpit just push the start button. Finished you flight, push the stop button.
You can use it in the background with screen locked or run other aviation apps at the same time (weather, GPS or what have you).
Later at home you view your flight profile on your computer through the this app website. They have different analysis tools, and you can even see animation on google earth, with either satelite view or sectional map as background. Their post analysis tool partitions your flight into segments in case you did some touch and go. CloudAhoy is simply amazing. I Can't believe it is free.

One of my All Time Fave aviation apps

This is a very good app for any CFI, or pilot interested in analyzing their recent flights. I have flown all over the US now with CloudAhoy turned on, and later used the ample analysis tools to look back at vectors around traffic, deviations for weather, and landings, missed approach practice, and more. CloudAhoy is wonderful. You can look at a landing, for instance, from the point of view of an observer outside the airplane watching from almost any angle, or look at the cockpit view and "run" an animation showing an approach. I have used it with flight students to demonstrate stability in precision and non-precision instrument approaches, or flight in a traffic pattern.

I have used CloudAhoy on an iPhone (using the built-in GPS, and Bad-Elf GPS), and on an iPad 3 (using the built-in GPS, and also an external Dual GPS). CloudAhoy is really good at just working without a lot of fuss and setup. If you forget to stop CloudAhoy when you taxi off the runway, it will auto-stop on the ground after a short period of time. I have added pushing the "start" button on CloudAhoy to my checklist :-)

The developer (Chuck) not only answers email inquiries about CloudAhoy , but does so quickly and with enthusiasm. He has given us a really interesting and capable tool. This is a "must have" app for pilots.

Great App

I have used CloudAhoy for every fight during my training and it has been very useful.

Great for flight debriefing and evaluation

this app is great. The best and most objective way to evaluate your flights and proficiency. I like CloudAhoy a lot. I also use the web version when I really want to dive deep into data and customize my displays. I like that I can import data to this app from glass cockpit or EFB.

Great for students

I'm a student and CloudAhoy has been fantastic for recording my flights and having complete debrief capabilities with my CFI and on my own after the flight.

Also I've been really surprised at how little battery it consumes. I expected it to be a battery hog but it's actually quite efficient.
