App direction changed

On 13 September 2021, the developers announced that Soulver 3 would come to iOS by unveiling the icon they intended for both platforms on twitter. I went all-in on Soulver3 for this reason. As an interim stopgap, I spent the past two years copying values from Soulver to other apps so I have access to them in iOS.

The developers have released a version for iPadOS, but now they are telling users that there are no plans for iOS. Instead features for things like Wolfram Alpha integration are being added.

It's frustrating that I need to migrate everything back to spreadsheets so I can finally be back to a system with sync, even though I'd much prefer to continue using Soulver while at my Mac.

Be Careful Before Upgrading - Huge Step Backwards for Units

I teach engineering (dynamics and orbital mechanics) and used Soulver 2 a lot to quickly write up homework solutions β€” it was great for adding notes and writing out equations. However, Soulver 3 is a HUGE step backwards because of how it (doesn’t) handle units.

In Soulver 2, you could string together units like acceleration (meters/sec^2) and everything was fine. However, Soulver 3 does NOT allow you to create units like this and in fact returns an error. Which means that *nothing* that I created in Soulver 2 can be brought forward. And if I want to write up new solutions in Soulver 3, I have to ignore units.

I don’t know what changed under the hood regarding how Soulver handles units, but this is a huge disappointment to me. Because I can’t use Soulver 3. (And Soulver 2 crashes a lot in modern OS X versions.)

Very nice, could use a few tweaks...

Great little app. My wish list for it would be:

- Ability to have it running in the menu bar without having to actually start Soulver3 at login. I only use it from the menu bar (QuickSoulver), but to get it to load I need to have it load the full app at login, which then brings the full app up each time that I have to close.

- I wish it would remember the window position of QuickSolver. I have to move it each time I restart or login the first time I use it.

- I wish there was a clear button on the QuickSolver page to quickly clear out all lines and calculations with one click.

I started with the 30 day trial but after just a few days purchased it, since it was obvious I'd want to keep this.

Great Tool, Great Support -

I'm not a math geek or a programmer so I was really taken with the simplicity and ease of use in Soulver 2 when I got it. I've been using Soulver 2 on my Mac, iPad and phone, for a few years and have been very satisfied. I was going to wait until the ios versions of 3 were ready because, really, I travel all the time so I may set up things on the Mac but I use them in all kinds of mibil application. I broke down and bought 3 because of the features and flexibility and, frankly, to help support this guy in his work and to encourage him to get to work on ios. What I found so far is that I can take advantage of a lot of the ease of use in 3 while brainstorming and then copy and paste a lot of what I do with little or no correction, editing ondreconstruction when I copy and paste it back to 2 so it will sync to my icloud. Soulver3 makes me smarter and it makes my life easier.

Almost Better Than Excel

Soulver3 is so easy to use and has excellent features. Basically its like an Excel spreadsheet, but pared down to just the most needed and useful features for quickly calculating some numbers or a set of numbers. It's ability to easily convert from one number unit to another using simple English is unpararalleled!

Unexpected.

When i first saw a Calculator that cost real Money...i thought, "No Way!"

This is not JUST another calculator. I've used this for a variety of calculations, Cloud Service estimates, collections of estimates, etc. Retaining entire pages of calculations and estimates. and then exported those values, retaining them for future estimate efforts.

I love this application - it serves me greatly. So much better than leveraging excel, etc...

Perfect for Visually-impaired User

As a legally blind person, I struggle with complicated spreadsheets such as Excel and Google Sheets. I stumbled across Soulver while trying to find a calculation and categorization program to prepare tax information for my accountant. Soulver is great in so many ways: accessible, dark mode, easy-to-enlarge text, contrasting colors. I am looking forward to learning more about what it can do.

Excellent and Easy

Beautiful app that is intuitive and very handy. I was impressed to see that it offers tools for investors and has some AI capability on a subscription basis for those who need that. I don't need that but it was interesting to see it offered. This is really much much more than just a fancy calculator. I highly recommend. Oh, and the support is timely and great. Thumbs up.

Great app - now on iPhone!

This is an app I loved for years on the Mac and then on the iPad. And now finally on the iPad.

Soulver3 has allowed me to create calculations and label each value so that if I only look at the calculations once a year, everything still makes sense. It even does units types. Divide miles by gallons and get mpg. Then easily convert it to a different type of unit.

Powerful

I've really been enjoying Soulver3 - it's incredibly useful for all sorts of different workflows. It's more useful than any other app of it's kind that I've ever used. The interface is clean, intuitive, and the customer support is also great. The whole app is a joy to use. The trial option is also great so you can try it before. Give it a try!

Back of the Bionic Envelope

A figure of speech, 'Back of the Envelope', alludes to grabbing any scrap of paper you have lying around to scribble quick and dirty caluculations: a step up from figuring things without writing.

Soulver is a step up from that step up. It's a big step.

A calculator with physical buttons, simple maths operations, can be a very handy tool... but of course they can do so much more.

The trick is desiging a simple and obvious extension of the calculator's buttons.

A spreadsheet is good for many jobs, but might be too big and complicated.

Soulver is a way to set up simple calculations with plain text. So much better for computers with keyboards, and not as complicated as a notebook interface or a spreadsheet.

Buy this little thing, you will actually use it.

Pleasant and obvious

This program is a joy to use. It is the kind of idea that seems obvious once you've seen it, but its ease of use belies an intense, intelligent effort in its construction. This tool makes absolute sense to me and the way I think - and I believe would help billions of others as well. It makes the steps in solving real issues clear and recorded, and has the brawn and flexibility to adapt to how you want to use it. Hats of to this fine app!

Even a better scientific calculator with latest update

I have been an active user of Soulver since 2007. This has been an indispensable tool for me as a chemistry student, researcher and now as a professor. Its ability to be used as a cross between calculator and spreadsheet has been key to me accomplishing my work both quickly and efficiently. Quite simply if Soulver3 isn’t in use I’m not working. Probably what I appreciate most is the developers willingness to listen to their users and the care and effort they take to make sure Soulver is the best possible tool for all their users. I’m really excited to see how Soulver improves with future updates and how it will allow me to work even more efficiently.

Very useful

It made it easy to take a series of values that each were related to a percentage but which were rounding to different percentages for the same presented number at times. I could then enter a list of the calculated numbers in a Numbers cell and find the average which made predicting the next number much more accurate. If that makes sense.

It was worth it to me. It reminds me of an old HP calculator’s backsolve program.

Been waiting for so long for the iPad version

Finally! Yes! I have Soulver2 across iOS, iPadOS and MacOS, and this app once that came out… so it’s been a long wait. It’s made by a single person, so the wait was understandable.

Soulver3 is great. A bit of a learning curve but it is so so capable. If you like β€œback of the napkin” math, or just playing around with numbers in a practical way, GET Soulver3! I probably don’t utilize it’s full potential, but it is there. One of the best β€œindie” apps out there.

Soulver is the better napkin

If you want to make back-of-the-napkin calculations, you can't do better than Soulver.

Soulver3 seriously combines the speed of Spotlight with the power of Excel, and adds a sprinkling of web-data-fetching. And if you're looking to do some larger-than-napkin calculations (like medium-to-large budgets), the ability to name your data alone makes Soulver the way to go. I've used it to trim subscription services, build a parts list for a new pc (and plan out a purchase schedule!), and even decide how to best rearrange some of my larger file directories across several hard drives!

If you have numbers and you want to make sense of them quickly, get Soulver.

PS to the devs: please give us the option to have live-typing auto-complete suggestions! Hitting Esc gets a bit old if you're dealing with a lot of variables.

A must have tool of all

I have been using Soulver for years and upgraded to version 3 as soon as it became available. This is a must have tool since it is a Swiss Army knife of abilities.

I have used it for everything from thinking through purchases/loans to predicting how long processing will take for various projects I work on. I have used it for information conversions and as worksheets for estimations.

It is beautiful in design, flexible for functionality, and friendly to work with. If you are a professional, student, or need to think through or manage anything; this tool will make you happy.

Like getting an extra finger to count with...

Okay, I know, no one's asking for base 11. My point is that no one NEEDS a calculator that does all the stuff Soulver does, but after using it for a few months, I absolutely WANT a calculator that is this useful. I use this multiple times per day to calculate how long Dropbox will take to finish syncing a folder, what % tax I got charged, what is $20 in GBP and on and on. It actually shocked me how frequently I ended up using Soulver, which filled a giant gaping hole in my life I didn't know existed. I only wish there was an iOS version so I could pack this power and utility everywhere I go. Well done, developers!

Where have you been all my life?

First off, thank you for the 30 day free trial of all the features. It was helpful to determine if Soulver3 is worth the investment. 2 weeks in to the trial and I am gladly paying for the full version. Every day I need to quickly determine the number of days/weeks/months from a specific date at work, and for years resigned to counting on a calendar because other apps were too cumbersome. Soulver 3 makes this super fast. Soulver3 is completely different in the way you can think through problems and not need formulas. As a fan of spreadsheets, I look forward to learning what else this powerful app can do.

The best napkin calculator app is even better

I am a long-time Soulver user, and Soulver 3 is worth the money to upgrade. I love the new features including custom unit conversions, subtotal lines, and how all your documents are organized together into a single notebook. Soulver combines all the expressiveness and note-taking ability of doing calculations on the back of a napkin with the power of a spreadsheet app. Highly recommended.
