Update makes you pay to see you previously made documents!!!!

I used to love Text Edit. I’ve had it for several years now. I have used it as my main document making and saving app. I’m learning ASL and I have made and saved so many documents to TextEdit, from my word lists, to practice sentences and more. Then, just recently it started saying I couldn’t add any new documents unless I paid for a premium subscription! So I had to stop making new documents, but I was still able to see and use the many, many documents I had made on here over the years. Now, since the new update, every time I open TextEdit , it brings up a pop up every time I open TextEdit , to do a free 3 day trial that will then end up making me buy a subscription after the 3 days!! As far as I could see there was no way to exit the pop up or see all of the many documents I’ve made unless I agree to this! Even tried turning Wifi off, pop up still came up and said I couldn’t use TextEdit because I was offline! I almost never write reviews, but I wanted to warn others so they don’t lose all the documents they make unless they pay. I’m really upset about this because I just lost all the work I’ve put in making the documents because I’m not going to pay for TextEdit . Would give it 0 stars if I could.

Please fix the AI ransom demand popup!

Update:

TO THE DEVELOPERS: I’m commenting from the iPhone version of this app after manually rescuing all the documents I made with previous versions of this app to protect them from the ransom-ware that the iPad version of this app has become. I understand that having built in AI would be useful to some, but being forced into a monthly subscription for a service I am not interested in (a service that is so ubiquitous these days, who needs it as a monthly subscription on every little app or website?) to access previous documents is outrageous. I also understand that you hope to make lots of money off your AI gamble. You should be ashamed. One of the reasons I chose to work with this app was the universality and downgrade-ability of plain text data. If you had offered a separate AI version of this app without holding us simple folk hostage, that would have been actual intelligence, not artificial intelligence. Best of luck to you. I hope you have a change of heart.

Cannot cancel subscription

I feel trapped!! Been trying all different ways to see a cancel subscription page…. Despite their claims that it’s available in settings, it’s nowhere to be found. So am I stuck with this monthly fee forever?

What did you do?? You locked everyone out unless we subscribe

Hey developers: you cannot suddenly force everyone to start a trial of a subscription or be unable to access our data. Highly unethical and you’ve been reported to Apple.

SHAME ON YOU.
I’ve deleted TextEdit and I already have a replacement. You lost me for good.

NOT designed to work with IOS.

TextEdit’s general file functions, like file name change, save to files, send by text, etc. are completely alien to IOS. Just a simple task like renaming a document and saving it to a specific folder is a HUGE waste of time. What good is it to create or edit a text file if saving it, sharing it, and other basic functions are uniquely weird? Waste of money.

Once useful, now useless

First, TextEdit fails to disclose it won't work with family sharing.

Second, new "3 day trial" puts it in the company of other rip-off apps designed to enrich the developers at the expense of busy people.

No thanks! I deleted TextEdit , I just wish there was a way to delete from my purchase history to protect an unsuspecting family member.

Another one bites the dust

I’ve had TextEdit for years, used it extensively. Sadly the developer has decided to go the route of punishing old users rather than rewarding their early adoption. I’m now a “free user” who has exceeded my free document limit, and now in the latest versions I must subscribe. To a TEXT editor. I used to be able to open many more. Goodbye greedy dev, there are much better alternatives out there.

There seems to be a sleazy attempt to make paid users pay more

I bought TextEdit. Now if I open TextEdit I am given a choice of subscribing or - well there is no choice. If this is a new app, they can ask for a subscription. It is unethical to hobble a paid app, and ask for more money. The publisher does not answer my emails - so a lot of people, including me, are angry. Apple, do you allow this?

A decent app I already paid for being locked behind a paywall for their AI feature.

I liked TextEdit but didn’t use it often. Went to use it the other day (re-installed it) and this popup for their $1.99 per month AI service popped up with no way to cancel it before I could restore my purchases. With no way to cancel the pop-up and restore my purchase TextEdit is now useless to me.

New Update Imposes Limits

I loved TextEdit because I could edit rtf documents from my Mac on my iPad. I could even connect to my Mac with Files App and access documents right on the hard drive.
I updated today, and now there are limits imposed on how many documents I can have in TextEdit . Even the trash on TextEdit has limits! What's more, I can't even access documents on my Mac with Files App without being stopped by a pop up telling me I have too many documents! All because the developer wants me to pay for the "Pro" version.
I am sorely disappointed in this update, and I will be deleting TextEdit if the limits are not removed promptly. The developers should know how angry their customers will become if they suddenly impose limits on what was once unlimited. Bad decision.
Time to look for a new rtf editor.

Huge disappointment

I keep notes using this app on my Mac and was looking for a way to edit them on my mobile devices. I use this app’s Alt-Tab shortcut for creating bullet points and outlines and its Ctrl-K shortcut to link text to web pages. this app+ rendering of the resulting RTF document was completely unacceptable: the indentation was incorrect, the spacing between paragraphs was way off, and links appeared with a leading “<“. And on top of that, TextEdit claimed that it can’t edit the document because tables are currently not supported — even though my document doesn’t contain any tables. I very much regret having purchased TextEdit, especially as expensive as this one.

Can’t edit anything and stupid

I just purchased TextEdit and found out that I was bricked from editing text documents, and I can’t even make a text file, all due to an AI edit pop-up that has no close button, and you can’t even describe how bad it is. Please update and remove this pop-up before I report TextEdit. I would give 0 stars if there was an option. Please remove this pop-up So I can edit my text documents. So if you had just not added this pop-up, I would have used it for years. I would have been very happy, but no. You decided to do something stupid and somehow brick me with an AI edit pop-up that won’t let me do anything. Ridiculous how I have to spend $1.99/month to just use TextEdit. 3 day trial and then I have to pay. So pathetic and stupid. I am going to ask Apple for a refund.

Disappointed

First download gave me a ultrabasic version that did not save anything, and did not register that anything was downloaded. I attempted a second download that actually downloaded the advertised product.

This created doubt.

The opening screen pops into a subscription notice. There was NO notification in TextEdit store of ANY fees!

This amounts to bait and switch! I am uninstalling immediately, and noting the developer so I don't accidentally get another of their apps.

If I could choose 0 stars I would.

Glitchy app

They advertise markdown support, when I press + I get an error saying unable to add document and that TextEdit doesn’t recognize that file type. Wish I bought another app instead as this one is buggy and the file organization is weird. I was hoping it would be more like word where you could edit a file directly stored in the files app.

Good App, Extremely Limited Text Navigation

I like TextEdit . it doesn't crash with large file, though the larger the file, the slower it gets.

Lacks a way to move through the document, from top to bottom, bottom to top and in between. Where is the scroll tab?

A simple fix they didn't bother to mention!

Bought this hoping to edit and change the fonts on stuff I had written with iOS Notes. Imports fine, but cannot edit - the keyboard never pops up! Waste of money.

Update: cannot open Notes files - but you can copy/paste the old text directly into a new document. Still annoying that they couldn't just mention that!

Filled a huge need for me

I have been looking for a way to edit this app files on iOS for a long time and waited to see if Apple would do it but they seem to be too focused on Pages. TextEdit fills that need for me and it is a better solution for me than other text editors like Ulysses and Google Docs. Thank you and keep it up!

This Does What I Want

I am glad to find that TextEdit does the same things I do on this app on the iMAC. It works with iCloud in the standard way. I don’t use it for fancy editing, just basic documents. It is the best I have found for rtf and rtfd. Minor issues: it is easy to put in tabs but only at std spacing and there is location called “ in Files App” that is a mystery to me, but I don’t have to use it.

Text Edit on iOS/iPadOS

If you use this app on MAC and need it for iOS/iPad OS then look no further. Use the same iCloud folder for both apps and you will thank me later.

You get what you pay for

Nice! It’s just like the original.
