Malfunctioning app, lousy support

I have a this app Blue Pure 311i Max, and Blueair has been awful! It doesn’t want to connect with my phone except with it set permanently as a mobile hotspot, even though it’s connected to the wifi! An error keeps making it so I have to unplug the HEPA and plug it back in every time I launch Blueair , otherwise it says it’s offline, and won’t connect. Got a VPN for your safety? You’re never going to be allowed to use it again. Their customer service isn’t knowledgeable, and is absolutely useless; go with their phone line if you must, but be forewarned, they know less than their FAQs. PS: don’t even try to use their ZenDesk “email” support- they never respond. As far as their “email” support goes, I still have a question about replacement filter types that’s been sitting ignored by them for over 4 months and counting!

Unfortunate

this app has been selling some of the best rated air purifiers and the filters for them for many years now. I own and use ten of them now in my various properties. Unfortunately the top rated units are no longer available. The filters( that actually worked) in removing odors, from cooking, pets, etc. are no longer available. The new filters are no where near as effective as the old ones. Referring to Dual-protection vs. the old Smoke-Stop. If you can even order them as the site is frequently out of stock. The old this app app was highly functional. The this app friend app which used to work very well( several years ago) has been practically useless for years now, still no fix?It is unfortunate that I have spent thousands of dollars on great air purifiers but am no longer able to buy filters for those units. Also an air quality monitor that due to Blueair is also useless. I feel as if I have wasted thousands of dollars on very good air purifiers that I can no longer use. It is unfortunately time to start looking into a company that is able to provide good customer service and provide their customers with quality replacement filters, units, and an app that works. Sorry Unilever, that was a big fail!

Outdoor data way off!

According to many reliable sources like WebMD and etc, the data Blueair displays for the outdoor data is way off! For ex: It says the PM outside is 15 while everything else shows it closer to 60. Also, I question the indoor data as well. It has been fluctuating between 50-65 for the indoor PM. I have the following installed in my HVAC system; Aprilaire Merv 16 filtration, UV bulb installed in the coils, and a Air Oasis UV Air Ionic Purifier. Hard to believe it’s that high when the air smells so clean inside. Thoughts anyone? I feel like this unit was a waste of money or is no longer supported? Oddly enough, the screenshot’s used in the description of Blueair shows almost the exact same outdoor data for my location. In fact, it’s actually showing 17 PM outside right now which isn’t right. I tested my theory by opening the door for cross ventilation. If the outdoor pollution was indeed lower, then my indoor pollution should improve. However, it quickly spiked another 10 PMs within 5 minutes leaving the outdoor pollution was indeed wrong and worse than the inside. I don’t trust their products.

Latest update made my classics non responsive

The update that got released on august 10th that fixes some iOS 13 issue, brought back the bug from two updates ago that renders my wifi control of my this app classics (205i, 480i and 680i) all non responsive when trying to manually adjust their fan speed. The only thing that works is the ability to switch between manual and auto mode. Once in manual mode it is very obvious the function is broken because even within Blueair on my iPhones screen, the user interface doesn’t actually “lock into place” at the desired manual speed when trying to change the purifiers speed. It will just time out and revert back to the lowest fan speed as usual. this app team please fix this (again)!! You fixed it with the last update before august 10th, something went wrong again because it’s the identical problem. Please, it greatly affects people’s everyday lives more than you would think. Thank you for reading my plea and my feedback. I would happily give 5 stars if this issue is fixed.

Buggy and Unreliable

Blueair looks like it should be a five-star experience to match the premium price of the purifier it monitors. It offers a number of metrics and explains how to interpret them. Unfortunately, Blueair itself is so buggy and unreliable that it’s impossible to tell how valid these data points are. Every time I open Blueair , after 5-10 seconds my purifier shows as disconnected; the only way to show it as connected is to force quit and relaunch Blueair . The different data views (day/week/month) are often unresponsive or continue to show the day view regardless of selection. It’s unclear from the longitudinal data If disconnections affect the reliability of the readings over time or if Blueair continues to plot the most recent available data. Blueair has a lot of potential, but right now it’s just a glorified remote control that often doesn’t work.

Deceptive Business Practices | Avoid

this app’s devices work great. But this isn’t a review of their devices it’s a review of their app & its functionality.

I clicked “order a new filter” in Blueair after a year of using the device. Blueair told me I could “save 10% by signing up for a subscription.” Seems straight forward and I figured I’d need another filter in a year so why not? They asked me to select my filter delivery dates. The first field was auto populated with the soonest possible date. The second field was 1 year later. Sounds good right? No, they charged me $60 and sent out the filter right away. 3 days later they charged me another $60 and sent another filter.

When I called to ask them about this they said, “oh yea, the system added a single filter when you clicked the button in Blueair to order a new one and when you selected our offer to save with a subscription it doesn’t remove the initial filter. People were complaining to us that when they bought just the subscription they weren’t getting the first filter fast enough.”

So instead you’re offering $10 off but then double charging people in the first week? Seems like way more people would be mad about that! I certainly was / am and will not purchase another this app device regardless of how the device itself performs.

Will not connect

I have two Sense+ units and Blueair running on iOS 17.0.2. I recently replaced my wireless router, so I had to reconnect the units to Blueair . Neither unit will respond, I have tried every fix suggested, the process in Blueair is circular and vague. Very frustrating. Both units have been connected in the past (I had similar issues then) but when the guidance in Blueair isn’t even logical (at one point Blueair asks if the ring is “not lit” but in the example, the ring is… lit?) it’s impossible to determine where the problem is. It’s taken hours of my time to no avail. Given the price of these units, it’s really unacceptable. Two instead of one star because I know Blueair can work - it has in the past after much wrestling, but at what point do I cut my losses and switch to a brand with actual coherent UX?

Bad app, great machine

The this app Classic 680i is a fantastic air cleaner. (albeit a very large unit) However, Blueair is lacking in numerous ways compared to competitors…

1) No Apple HomeKit integration

2) If you are an Apple user, you cannot add the device to your home automation scenes. (ie, automatically turn on when I arrive home and turn off when I leave home, etc)

3) No Home Screen widget to see current air quality stats

4) No integration with Siri Shortcuts app or commands. (they have this enabled for Alexa and Google, so they clearly are just ignoring Apple users)

5) The setup process to connect the device to your home WiFi is not intuitive and more cumbersome than other apps. It also does not support 5ghz WiFi.

6) Blueair requires your exact location, not a close location. That’s a huge privacy concern! Why do you need to know my exact location? Anywhere within a 1/2 mile is close enough for the outdoor air quality levels in Blueair . You don’t need my pinpoint location.

7) No notification options. Other apps send you a notification if AQI, PM2.5, VOC, etc goes over specified levels. this app sends me nothing.

8) No firmware update button in Blueair , so you cannot force it to check for updates. You have to wait until it decides to check on its own.

9) No way to save or export the weekly/monthly data.

A blemish on Blueair’s beautiful brand

The product itself is fantastic, but Blueair leaves much to be desired. While I truly appreciate the ability to monitor and control information through Blueair , and the UI is both intuitive and visually appealing, the connectivity issues are a serious drawback.

I’ve experienced the same issues others have mentioned. It’s not my internet—every other device in my home functions perfectly. I’ve ensured I have the latest version of Blueair , but I’m constantly forced to unplug, replug, redownload, and re-onboard every day or two just to get it working again.

This repetitive and frustrating process tarnishes an otherwise stellar product. I’d hate to see this app’s reputation suffer because of these software issues. Blueair development team needs to revisit and resolve this problem promptly.

Great features, but buggy and slow

The features of Blueair are excellent, but Blueair is slow to update information. Often it does not show the correct controls. For example, when changing from “Auto” to “Manual” control, the buttons on Blueair don’t change when tapping in Manual. You have to close the lane and reopen it to be able to actually change the fan speed.

The air quality graph updates erratically, if at all. It’s really unclear when the readings are actually from. Sometimes they may be displaying from several days or weeks ago, making the graph and information untrustworthy and useless.

If they can work out this display and update issues it would be five stars!

Good product. App & online support are terrible

First off, the product is great. I would recommend the purifier to anyone.

That being said, when I bought the product about 8 months ago, I wasn’t able to purchase the product online because their website was awful and wouldn’t allow my order to process, so I had to call the company and order that way. I’ve tried multiple times to buy replacement filters, a few weeks apart for a few months now and Blueair has a link that supposedly takes you to buy more filters. I’ll sign in and try to check out, but it makes me sign in again and adds 2 filters to my cart every time. So after the first try I come back to a cart with 3 filters and if I hit checkout, I have to sign in yet again but now the cart has 5 filters and won’t let me manually change the quantity. Luckily, it’s a never ending cycle so it won’t allow me to purchase anything through Blueair .

I was able to checkout online this time via laptop, but there’s virtually no support option on their website or app. I haven’t tried the chat bot, but their ‘customer support’ page is just FAQ’s and the ‘contact us’ page has a link for a form but the link does not work. Alas, I’m writing this review in the hopes that someone sees it and they can fix their app & other technical issues.

Lazy (updated Feb 2023)

Blueair is a joke. The connection process is ham-handed and horribly lacking. It wastes time scamming you into believing it may actually connect directly to your home WiFi when it will absolutely not. I’ve had these filters for over 5 years and not one time have they connected to my home WiFi without going through a marginally effective manual connection process that takes repeated attempts to actually connect. The customer service and responses are snippy, dismissive and decidedly indignant. It is incredibly frustrating for such a good product to be negatively impacted because of lazy software development.

UPDATE:
I recently purchased 3 new filters making my total this app filters in my home at 6. Although they have improved the connection process, Blueair itself is still slow and control through Blueair has improved only marginally. The response from their Customer Service is still not the best. I have yet to receive a response to my request to buy additional filters. The units are excellent products. So good that I actually purchased 3 additional units after I wrote the initial review. I’m a relatively loyal this app customer, even though Blueair remains the weakest point in the mix.

Lots of potential, but. . .

Love the products, but having a hard time loving Blueair . Lots of quirky data display choices and temperamental location accuracy, but my main issue is with the night mode. For the sanity of everyone, can we please just be able to set “auto” and “night” modes according to “sunrise” and “sunset?” It can’t be that difficult. Got Blueair several months ago and was mildly annoyed that it wasn’t this simple, so I set up two schedules manually to trigger night mode at 7 pm and auto at 7 am for both of our purifiers. That worked fine but as soon as daylight savings switched over a few weeks ago, I can’t seem to get those schedules to work for anything. Here it is almost midnight and once again, the lights on the unit are blaring bright and I’ll have to go into Blueair and manually put it in night mode.

ComfortPure T20i

For some reason the PM always stays the same at 0 for this model. I’m not sure if the sensor is faulty or it’s just software. The temperature gets a reading (68°F, I believe it’s correct) but the graph does not reflect that reading and so far it always shows a record of under 50°F for some reason. Everything else from heater to purifier functions but I’m not sure whether it is functioning correctly across the board. Please help and look into this. I know we can’t turn on heat via app, but can we set the oscillation settings for it? It’s such a roundabout way to do it at the moment with setting it in another mode then going to heat mode. If I want to change the oscillation while it’s in heat, I have to change it to purifier or cool mode to change the oscillation in Blueair THEN go back to heat—not really user friendly for this. Can I just directly alter the oscillation in heat mode on Blueair . I hope this is alright for regulations.

Nice features, device often going offline

Blueair has a lot more features than I expected. I didn’t expect it to be able to track outside air quality in addition to the inside air. The graph is very nice, and I can see the peak moments when I’m cooking or cleaning. However, my purifier is often reported as being off-line. And sure enough, the device is blinking. No other devices on my home network do this.I have performed all the troubleshooting tips more than once. I’m weary of having to unplug this thing almost every day to get it back in Blueair (which doesn’t always work right away). Any firmware updates coming? The purifier does an excellent job otherwise, as expected for such a high price. I look forward to Blueair improving along the way.

Love the Filter

Great filter quiet and efficient. Bought the400 and liked it so much I added the 700 now. Nomenclature is a problem for the uninitiated. Names and models on labels don’t clearly equate with manual, website, and and App. Sign up for automatic delivery if filters needs work, suggest programmer try it out on grandparents. Wish the instructions were clearer on set-up and meaning of colors on 770. Very good people on the help line BUT 20-30 minute wait to actually get one of these nice people to talk to you. More how to use videos on-line instead of artsy uninformative sales pitches would be useful to those who have already bought the product and this might shorten the phone wait time. Once you get it working you will love it.

If only it stays connected

Blueair is great for initially connecting to your product and seeing what’s in the air, what’s being filtered, and the current life of the filter. Only frustrating issue: Constantly disconnects from my iphone. Always having to check if the software is the latest, if my internet is having any issue, etc etc… all troubleshooting leads to is having to delete the product from Blueair and reconnect like new. This loses all previously recorded data. I’ll live with that. I have gone without Blueair for months at a time… but! what I need it for is to turn down the light and set my product into night mode where it can run without illuminating the room. I might just put electric tape on that light strip and delete Blueair . But tech isn’t easy to keep up with various models and updates and hardware, software, versions, coding, etc… so I check back in here and then hoping the bug is fixed.

Great product, could improve welcome home feature

I love the air purifier I’ve purchase and it seems to do the job well. Blueair works great and I love the option to create schedules. One issue I have with Blueair is that when using the welcome home feature it will always default back to auto when returning home. I really wish that there was an option to either run it at the previous setting or at a preset fan speed when returning home as I don’t use the auto setting. With the current functionality I have to go back in and adjust the fan setting every time I arrive back home. It should be easy to program into Blueair and I don’t see why it couldn’t be done. That would be my only suggestion. Other than that everything works great!

Well Designed, Easy to Use

Never thought I’d write a review for an air purifier app but here I am.

I’m actually impressed, Blueair was incredibly simple to get my this app 211i Max connected. No weird steps, no finnicky connections, no broken English instructions. It just works. And I say this from experience from some other air purifier manufacturers that don’t know how to design a reliable app (cough Coway)

Bonus points here for stable connection, graph for aqi, and just a simple list of devices and your local AQI. No bloat, no ads, which is incredibly appreciated. Will definitely be buying another this app down the road

Everything that was promised and more!

I try to give an honest opinion and assessment on all products I review as that is what I expect from other reviewers. That being said this product is amazing and while it is only been operating for 2 months and I can’t testify to it’s longevity, the air quality in our house has been excellent shortly after plugging it in and turning it on auto. You can actually feel the quality of the air in our home improve. The filters are a little bit pricey but the value of the this app purifier is exceptional. I highly recommend this product for anyone concerned about their air quality in their home.
