Great potential. I SO MUCH want Immich to succeed and be the de facto long term replacement for google photos. I WOULD PAY MONEY. The web UI is promising and seems perfectly capable of managing even large libraries (3TB+) efficiently.
However, the iOS syncing is extremely unreliable, particularly the background upload. I find that on 3 out of 3 phones the background upload has uploaded 0 photos even after days or weeks, no data gets uploaded.
The only upload that mostly works is foreground upload but it’s slow (which oddly varies), gets stuck with vague errors or no errors and generally requires constant babysitting.
Immich does what it says. For my wife, it excelled at downloading her library. For me, with 60k photos (a lot in the cloud and raw) it has taken a long time and BG sync seems to be borderline useless. Immich freezes after a few seconds on both of our devices, especially mine. Sometimes it catches up if I leave the screen on for a few minutes, sometimes it crashes. The first time around it filled my phone up with local downloads of images in Immich that I already had on device. That was solved by uninstalling and reinstalling. Definitely not perfect but for what it is, I still think it’s an amazing bargain and amazing tech!
I keep on checking back with Immich, but it’s not quite there yet in terms of being able to reliably sync my photos with is a deal breaker for me to feel any confidence in it replacing other cloud-based solutions. Every time I have tried using Immich to sync my photos, it inevitably stops at a point and makes no further progress. I have thousands of photos waiting to be synced and the number has not changed in days of waiting. Even if I manually press the sync button and leave the screen on, it doesn’t make any difference.
When using Immich and doing a search, after you scroll to the bottom of the list, Immich glitches and takes you back to the top of the search results. It’s repeatable.

I had to deduct a star because the background upload feature constantly disables itself (despite this app having all permissions enabled in settings). No other photo backup solution I’ve tried has this issue. Makes automatically backing up your photos a pointless venture if it keeps disabling itself whenever I open another app.
this app is definitely is something to try out and see if it works for you to organize, share, and display your own photo library. It’s fast, easy to setup using docker compose/portainer stacks. And not too bad to keep up to date. Just be sure to read the release notes!
About Immich , it works similar to the web interface with a few notable differences, such as the face detection and duplication tool are not available on Immich . If possible I think it can work well on a mobile device.
One bug I did find is the gifs no longer work on the iOS app. It used to before but it’s now broken. Hopefully it can resolved soon!
The this app App is an outstanding project that truly prioritizes privacy and security. In a time when personal photos are often vulnerable, Immich provides a safe and reliable space to store precious memories with peace of mind. The developers have done an incredible job creating a platform that is both user-friendly and secure, ensuring that privacy is never compromised. Huge thanks to everyone involved in making this possible—we need more projects like this that genuinely care about protecting people’s digital lives!
I’m very impressed. As I understand it, this is a solo developer effort and perfectly does the job it was intended to do. I love being able to self-host the server app easily via docker compose and have backups from anywhere using tailscale. No issues yet, thanks for this great app!
Without a doubt the best solution currently available. Its so lightning fast and the context search is amazing. You search a dog and there it spits all pictures with dogs. The face detection is also top notch.
I was looking for something like this for a long time. Super fast. Supports auto upload. Video transcoding makes viewing videos so fast - it seems they are stored locally on my phone!
I never thought a self hosted app can rival something native from the big guys like google , apple and Microsoft , but this is it! Don’t read this go download Immich and figure out docker containers and get this going yourself. Google photos got nothing on this.
been using App-Which-Must-Not-Be-Named since 2017. with my new phone these file sizes get wayy too big and I don’t want to pay that developer to host my pictures when I have 5TB at my disposal. thank you for everything
I’ve dropped apple photos for this since it’s been working great. A good note I had to learn from Reddit, there is a 100MB limit if you’re using cloudflare proxies so anything over that won’t upload. I had to switch to tailscale to get everything to sync which is no deal breaker for me.
Gets better every update. I’m hosting with UnRAID and using iPhones. My wife and I can back up and share photos easily and automatically without paying a subscription fee or storing our data on other people’s servers.
I’ve never wanted to support a product more than this app! It’s been a joy to use and watch grow. I am extremely optimistic about the trajectory and future of this app and where Alex and his team will take it!
Shaping up to be one of the most polished FOSS out there :)
Can’t thanks the team enough. This is just perfect, easy to setup, gives almost all the features of any modern photo/video storage app and completely free. No storage issue, I have set it up using a 10TB hard drive and don’t think I’ll need more space in next few years.
Immich is definitely a work in progress and is a little rough around the edges in some ways, but it already has the best UI of any of the self hosted platforms I’ve tried.
So glad to see a native app being made for one of these and I can’t wait to see where this project goes from here!
Easy to setup, easy to use, updated at an insane pace, supportive Discord community, excellent product. I barely miss Google Photos, and the handful of features that aren’t quite there yet are more than made up for by the satisfaction of having control over my own data.
Using a Raspberry Pi 5 + Geekworm NVMe adapter + Samsung PCIE SSD, running Raspbian & Docker.
This software is extremely simple to set up and can run on almost anything I’m currently using my pi4 with a USB drive and even on that limited hardware it is extremely fast. Immich is set up perfectly all the menus are easy too find and use the search function is surprisingly good it’s not quite as good as the photo search tool on iOS but it still is pretty good.
Had login issues on IOS, guys were fast and on point!
