Oticon companion

App has potential but not really different than oticon on. The TV/church and comfort really don’t add much.
The main frustration is having to reconnect to my hearing aides almost every time and wait and wait for a reconnection. I find this frustrating and unacceptable. I deleted it and went back to oticon on. The problem with that app is random switching from tv to speech in noise and from speech in noise to general.
Oticon has a lot of work to do on both apps.

Glitches

Keeps disconnecting, disconnects left aid only sometimes, stuck on p2 not showing arrows to go back to general or to p3. Each time I have to delete OticonCompanion and redownload. Never had any problems with Oticon on app. I like the features of companion but it’s in need of some work.

Aesthetically better, but overall lacking.

I love the more clean interface, but overall, there’s a lot missing.

I don’t want to miss mentioning how nice it is that it actually remembers equalized settings!

Things that make it unusable for me at the moment:
- no dark mode (new design is more clean, but also more bright)
- connections are much slower (sometimes won’t load)
- no Apple Watch support

By

requires full-time location access ???

The pairing process with iphone seems to work, until you only allow location access while using OticonCompanion or don't allow any location access. Then OticonCompanion just keeps asking to pair. Sorry, I don't understand why location is needed to allow the phone to communicate with hearing aids.

By

Keeps disconnecting

The aids keep disconnecting from OticonCompanion , mainly left ear.

By

App is not better

I can control my aids through the system/ accessibility without issue. OticonCompanion continually disconnects and the only way to get them to reconnect with OticonCompanion is reboot my phone. No way to know how long you are wearing them.

Old app was better than this one.

By

I am missing my Apple Watch app

I would give it 5 stars if I had a working watch app.
I have lowered my rating due the disconnects, and no watch app.

By

Keeps disconnecting

Have to keep repairing. Drops left heating aid. Not useful! Want my other app back

Decent improvement from update but could use more

I used both the Oticon ON app and the Companion app and they both needed a serious update. I am very happy that they listened to feedback and added an Apple Watch app along with the ability to change programs, mute when needed, and added a battery notification option in OticonCompanion . My only complaint is that the complication for the Apple Watch only displays for certain Watch faces. It’s a little annoying considering I like to switch depending on my activities for the day but overall, an improvement from the last version.

By

Nice!

I am liking the new app! The only thing I really enjoyed was “hearing fitness”. It registered how much time each day I wore my hearing aids. Definitely a plus and something you should add back. My only other problem is switching my “more” hearing aids between my iPad and my iPhone. By default, they should be connected to my phone. But it seems that OticonCompanion goes in alphabetical order (pad comes before phone). And the hearing aids stay attached to the iPad until I turn off Bluetooth on My iPad (which I don’t want to do… other things need Bluetooth!) as soon as I turn Bluetooth back on on the iPad, the hearing aids switch back to the iPad. So, I deinstalled the iPad app and will use Bluetooth headphones instead until this gets fixed.

Why So Clunky

I really liked Oticon On and recently updated to this new version, Companion. Today, I deleted it and reverted back to On.

I had a remote session with my hearing provider and there were several issues with using it including not being able to hear each other during the appointment. That’s right, a hearing appointment where I couldn’t hear them and they couldn’t hear me. As a work around, we sent messages to each other.

The Bluetooth connection with the new app isn’t even as good as the old app (and it was minimally acceptable) when listening to music. The signal drops and the sound is garbled. Add to that the inability to add OticonCompanion to my Apple Watch face and I don’t see any improvements for my use. I’ve grown accustomed to being able to change hearing programs with a discrete touch of the watch face in meetings so this was a major negative for me.

Frankly, I’m very surprised at the technical issues with OticonCompanion from a technology company specializing in electronic consumer products.

If On goes away and there are no improvements in the new app, I’ll likely go with a different hearing aid in the future.

Excellent customer service

I have not worn my hearing aids long enough to rate them, but I will say Oticon customer service is excellent. My aids are paired with an iPhone and I couldn't figure out how to stop my incoming calls from ringing directly into my hearing aids. I emailed customer service one evening and the very next morning Katarina from customer service had a detailed step by step process in my inbox.

By

Nice update

This update brings OticonCompanion forward from its initial release. I like that you can decide the % battery alert (the old On app defaulted to 50%). The new Watch app that was added in this release looks much better the older On Watch App. The Companion Watch App allows for muting and Speech (sound) Booster from the Watch now as well.

By

Does not work after initial installation

A nice ap when it worked. After the first day OticonCompanion will not connect with my rechargeable hearing aids. It asks me to restart the aids and still will not connect. This is using the iPhone app. I haven’t had the same issue with the iPad app so far. Update: after several days OticonCompanion continues to regularly drop my hearing aids on my phone. This requires me to constantly restart my hearing aids to use OticonCompanion . I rarely use the iPad. OticonCompanion is therefore almost useless to me. This is a shame because it has some nice features.

By

Not good enough

Would be decent if it didn’t take 15 to 20 seconds to connect to my hearing aids every time I open OticonCompanion .

Sort of makes the watch app useless because I have to go open my phone first for the watch app to work.

Also, there is no reason that speech boost toggle should require two taps! Terrible UI for that

By

Love this app

I have used the Oticon app for 3 years. The Oticon Companion is definitely an improvement. I have 4 programs loaded: General, T-coil & Mic, MyMusic, and Speech in Noise. The pulldown menu makes it easy to toggle between them. I noted a big difference when playing MyMusic. Speech in Noise makes it easy to focus on one and listen clearly.

By

A little buggy

Oticon does a fairly good job of supporting hearing aid functions on my Real 1’s, but OticonCompanion is temperamental. A good deal of the time after turning on my hearing aids and going to OticonCompanion , I have to reboot in order to get full functionality. Sometimes it won’t accept turning on Speech Boost, sometimes the left channel volume level won’t appear. The rebooting process takes care of it, but why do I need to go through this nonsense every morning?

By

Not working the way it should

I just installed OticonCompanion at my audiologist visit last week but it's so buggy. Every time I open OticonCompanion to connect to my tv, it says my hearing aids are disconnected and it takes a long time to reconnect. It's also harder to scroll through my programs to get to the tv adapter mode than the old Oticon On app. I just reinstalled the old app and will use that one until this one works better

By

Companion App

I don't feel OticonCompanion is as user friendly as the ON is. The disconnect from the left hearing aid is absolutely terrible. The buttons at the bottom are nice for the booster, but why click the mouth just to have to turn it on, wouldn't 1 click be enough? The volume level to my phone now has to be all the way up to hear the ringing on the line and to hear the person on the other end.

By

Horrible app

Recently got Oticon REAL Hearing aids. I like the devices, but the Companion App is virtually unusable. Almost every time I want to adjust the volume level usung OticonCompanion , I have to go thru the re-connect process. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. But it is always inconvenient to have to stop what I’m doing to do this. For $5k hearing aids, seems like the company could make fixing OticonCompanion a priority. I wouldn’t recommend Oticon to anyone until OticonCompanion is fixed.

By

Slower than Oticon ON

Starting up, OticonCompanion takes *forever* to connect to the hearing aids (and sometimes will only connect one), but the Oticon ON app works instantly. This has a better Apple Watch app (when it’s already connected), but I find that I usually use ON because the connection is so bad.

By

Limitations of Oticon Companion App

Having used OticonCompanion for the past month, agree with the many review criticisms. For instance, connectivity issues are frequent and the location feature is fairly useless. Having addressed these concerns with the retailer, I am assured that OticonCompanion is undergoing further development. In the meantime, OticonCompanion functionality is adequate but limited when compared to the advertised features.

By

Intermittent clicking

When I use OticonCompanion to listen to videos on my iPad, there is an intermittent clicking noise which sometimes occurs in the left hearing aid and sometimes in the right one, but never both at the same time. This doesn’t happen on the iPhone or when I’m just using the aids for regular hearing. Other than this annoying inconvenience, OticonCompanion works fine.

By

Ok, but missing some functionality

The interface is pretty intuitive, and it’s nice to have remote audiologist adjustment merged into the same app, but it is missing two useful features that the Oticon On app has: Apple Watch complication and visible usage history. I’ll stick with Oticon On until these deficiencies are addressed.

By

Oticon Companion App

The newer app doesn’t function anywhere near as well as the older version. I deleted the newer one and reinstalled the older one. The Companion app must be manually activated while the older one initiates as soon as the aids are put in place. I don’t know how the Companion app can be considered an improvement when it has considerably fewer features.

By

Hearing aids are disconnected constantly

Every time I open OticonCompanion to adjust volume or change the program I have to reconnect, even when I connected a few minutes before. This just happened: I put my aids on. A few minutes later, I needed to adjust the volume. I opened OticonCompanion , the aids were not connected, so I put them back in the charger, put them back on my ears, and connected in OticonCompanion . A few minutes after that, I decided to watch TV and opened OticonCompanion to change the program so I can better hear the TV. I had to reconnect the hearing aids again. Other Bluetooth devices I use with my iPhone do not do this.

Reconnecting works best by putting the hearing aids back in the charger and then removing them, but the charger isn’t always available. Using the buttons on the aids themselves does not consistently reconnect them to OticonCompanion . I do close OticonCompanion by double-clicking it at least once daily. Sometimes that helps, sometimes it doesn’t.

By

Problematic with maintaining connection.

The last app was absolutely bullet proof. This one has a lot more great features but the number one priority is to maintain a connection. I have to turn off and on a lot to adjust my aids. There is a lot of devices grabbing our Bluetooth. Could be the complication. But the last app maintained its priority status.

Getting better

Has 2 equalizers now. One for streaming and one to use with your programs directly. That is a major improvement. As usual with hearing aids, connectivity is an issue as well as the speed of the connectivity. The slowest connecting app I have ever used is the Phonak and this one is twice as fast as that. When one aid will not connect I simply close OticonCompanion out completely and restart and it and it has connected with both aids except once. On that occasion I put them in the charger for 10 seconds and they both connected after being taken out. My Audiologist said not to have a bunch of other programs running in the background and they will connect faster and more often. Also, I had to update my firmware to make this latest app version install correctly. Oticon should have put in OticonCompanion notes that you need the latest firmware for this to work. I’m betting that a lot of people did not benefit from the new version because they didn’t get the benefits of the new app without the firmware. It happened to me and I was not happy for a week until I saw my audiologist who called Oticon and she installed the firmware on my aids. Then we reinstalled OticonCompanion and it was different then what it was before the firmware and better.

Mix’s bag this time

The new app is more powerful, offering the ability for remote care - a wonderful idea for those who cannot easily get to a provider. The downside is that the boot up time of OticonCompanion is mind numbingly long. This does not make it much use when I want to change something and totally useless if I have not activated OticonCompanion but want to use the watch app. Battery levels- finally I can change when it tells me the level. I never cared about 50/40%. But then you take away the spoken level ? Is that because you only had English? Surely there is a text to speech multi-lingual api you can tap into without bloating. I am unsure whether to keep going with this or go back to the oticon on app. At least until you remove that to push companion. Please don’t.

Developer response is still 50-50. Why drop spoken battery levels? Chimes are not very detectable. Fishing the slow boot can be done by backgrounding the rarely used(by consumer) boot up of the remote are.
Don’t turn it on until consumer requests it.

A few comments

As a graphic designer I appreciate the more contemporary look of the new Companion app. However, the bold magenta volume control against a sea of white background is too striking to be used discretely. The gray and magenta combo as used in the Oticon On app would be better or OticonCompanion needs to have the option to be run in ‘dark mode’. If I’m in a public setting, dining with a group, at the theater, etc. I wish to access OticonCompanion discretely to make adjustments. My other issue, which has already be documented by others, is the unacceptably long loading time OticonCompanion requires. It makes OticonCompanion totally unusable in everyday use. Until this issue is resolved I have no choice but to use the Oticon On app. Update: Kudos for the updated AppleWatch app! It’s excellent - layout, color combo and functionality! Please make the phone app look and work more like the watch app!

Not as nice an interface as the On app

While the ability to do remote adjustments with an audiologist who offers this feature is interesting and the possible use of OticonCompanion to do firmware updates is enticing, the updated app is is really quite clunky to use. Unlike the On app it takes many taps and screens to use many of the features. The developers would have been wise to keep the simple and clean interface of the On app and just have added the new features. It appears to be a new app with all the many quirks newly developed apps have without enough Alpha and Beta testing testing to make it truly usable.

I will stay with the On app until they make it possible to use OticonCompanion quickly and cleanly. Right now it takes too long to accomplish simple tasks. Also, my audiologist does not offer remote offsite adjustments nor firmware updates remotely so there is no reason to use it for those features.

IOS Handoff work around

The handoff from one Apple IOS device to another is poorly implemented in the Oticon Companion app. The instructions suggest putting the hearing aid back in the charger or cycling power at the hearing aid to reboot it. A much easier work-around is available which also demonstrates how the handoff should work if programmed as Apple intended.
To switch sources back and forth between an iPad and an iPhone, simply open the Apple Music app on the device you’re moving to and play something on the music app. The hearing aid almost always switches over in seconds and streams music from the new source. Do this before trying to use the Oticon Companion app on the new device to switch control of the hearing aid without rebooting it.

I just switched from Oticon ON App

As you suggested I’ve switched to your new app. I like some of the features, such as 1) it seems easier to change programs using my iWatch and to adjust the sound; 2) the layout seems slightly more intuitive; 3) I like the idea of using the remote feature but haven’t tried it yet; 4) seems like I might have more control of sound adjustments but I haven’t quite figured that part out yet.

So far I am really, really disliking not having the feedback sounds announcing program changes. I always liked and appreciated those as they also helped me gage better when the programs kick-in. I’m not a new user of your products I’ve had Oticon aids since 2010 and will likely upgrade to whatever your next model.

App would benefit from this

Age 39 with cochlear hydrops fluctuating hearing loss. Please include the following into your app. Great hearing aids but it's only as good if you give the user full control on OticonCompanion especially for those who suffer with my condition since it changes so often.

Full control to adjust anything when
streaming example phone
calls, listening to music or watching any
video online; being able to adjust the bass,
middle, treble, noise reduction etc. Add Wind
reduction control and front focus feature for
loud environments to be able to hear the
person that's directly in front of you. Show a
diagram of the the speech focus so a user
can see how wide or narrow you're adjusting
to. If streaming thru the tv box, make user
have full control bass, middle, treble, noise
reduction etc.

I believe these suggestions would greatly
enhance a user's experience using OticonCompanion .
Especially with those with fluctuating hearing
loss for the ability to have full control. Please help those who have this terrible condition of cochlear hydrops by making OticonCompanion a true companion to us.

Interface and details

I’ve run the new app through its paces. Suggestions:

1. The typefaces on screen are too precious - meaning too light and a few points too small. Consider that most of your users have older eyes. Please increase the size and heft of the type. (This happens when young sharp eyed people design the graphics and older execs decision makers watch the presentations of those younger well meaning designers and managers on BIG conference room TV screens. I know. It happens to me)

2. May we know the frequencies affected by the low, middle, and high streaming sliders.

3. Similarly, could we have the numbers of dB adjusted by the volume control sliders?

4. At the top of the screen, I prefer the larger square buttons for the four presets (as were on the old app). The new little chevron arrows are too lightweight and small. It is much faster to change presets with a single tap.

5. Could you add the speech enhancement toggle to the other presets?

Over to you. Keep up the good work.

Connect Delays!

The previous version provided instant connection to my hearing aids and retained the connection. This version always has to reconnect and it takes about 90 seconds which is very frustrating when I’m trying to connect to the tv to listen to a program. I only upgraded as I hoped they’d fixed the tv adapter volume issue. If you switch to another app and then come back to the Oticon app, the tv adapter goes back to the default level 14. So, in addition to waiting for the reconnection, I have to keep readjusting the volume. As that issue is no different than the previous version, I’ll be uninstalling this new version and reinstall the old version.

By

To me. . . It’s a busy

I was happy to see the chance to customize the EQ settings with the new app, I am a musician with good understanding of frequency and amplitude, however when opening OticonCompanion , there is no setting for the advertised EQ settings. Very disappointing. It’s like being told you won a new car and then being handed a plastic model.
The new interface is lifeless. Like Windows trying to be a Mac. At least windows has a dark mode.
I have appreciated the tremendous difference having these aids have made for me, but the lack of personal control beyond the mundane volume option will have me looking elsewhere when replacement time comes.

By

Doesn’t Seem Reliable

Have been using this new app for a few months and it seemed ok until just recently. Today it disconnected from my iPhone and wouldn’t reconnect. Tried everything: turned phone off and on, unpaired and attempted re pair, cycled hearing aids off and on, etc. in other words I tried everything the troubleshooting guide suggested. Nothing worked. Finally I deleted OticonCompanion and went back to the original Oticon app. Hearing aids paired almost immediately. Sticking with tried and true.

By

Step back in reliability and functionality

The On app had a widget that I used almost daily on my watch to adjust the volume and presets of my hearing aids OticonCompanion does not. As MANY people have said before the connection issues are a big problem and this is all after the push notifications came through for the “on” users so the stability issues should have been addressed. As a whole the settings and adaptability afforded to the customer is 9/10 junk. Look at what GN Reasound has on their app I had lots of control to help adjust the profile to make it perfect for the real world not the near sterile environment of the office. Fix the connection issues and give the people more access….

By

Better graphics, worse function

Graphics are better, function is worse than before and intuitive. This is OK. I keep having to restart, reboot, find why one side doesn’t work constantly. Could I please get the old app back?
Also, I’ve noticed that when someone or when I report issues with OticonCompanion or with the hearing aids the response from you guys is feel free to reach out to us. That’s your answer to everything. That doesn’t make any sense. I’ve reached out to you three or four times and I get back is “feel free to reach out to us and let us know how we can help.“

Lost connection and wont reconnect

I keep reading that the developers are working on this. OticonCompanion is fairly useless without holding a connection, let alone, taking forever to reconnect or not connect. Putting them in the charger might work, but they won’t hold the connection. I even have resorted to turning Bluetooth off and on, which also sometimes works, but OticonCompanion will still not hold the connection. Hopefully Oticon fixes soon ! Interestingly, I put OticonCompanion on my iPad and it holds the connection much better and reconnects very quickly when you open OticonCompanion .

By

Very slow connect. No auto reconnect.

I tried OticonCompanion after getting the suggestion alert from Oticon On. I hate it! Connection is painfully slow. After charging my hearing aids overnight, when I start OticonCompanion the next morning, my hearing aids are disconnected with another very long wait for them to connect.

OticonCompanion does appear to work correctly after it finally connects to the hearing aids.

I'm staying with Oticon On until these issues are fixed.

By

Functional with drawbacks.

On a good day, OticonCompanion fulfills most of the functions you need to do with your hearing aids. There is nothing really special included and this is an update to the previous app which functioned similarly.
However, just yesterday when Apple came out with their latest update to iOS 16 to fix a security flaw, OticonCompanion does not work at all with my hearing aids. They do not pair with it and thus it has no functionality. I am hoping next week when Apple comes out with their iOS 17, Oticon will also come out with an app which is more functional. In the meantime, it is possible to do most everything OticonCompanion does within the Apple accessibility menu.

UPDATE to Broken Companion with 1.2.1 update

After the recent update to version 1.2.1, my hearing aids will not connect to OticonCompanion : uninstall, reinstall, remove hearing aids in Settings, reinstall aids in Settings, turn Bluetooth Off/On and the 1.2.1 has rendered the Oticon Companion useless!
By email I reported the suspected “broken version 1.2.1 update” to Oticon and within a week update version 1.2.2 was released for the Oticon Companion app which fixed the above described issue.
Now, that is impressive tech service!
Very much appreciated Oticon!

Life was good…..for a while

The old app worked just fine for me and my OPN 1 aids. Then the new app came along. I called my provider and they said “Sure. Go ahead and install the new app, be sure to remove the old app.” So, I did as instructed. The new app worked fine for a couple of weeks. Then over the last few days It will not connect so that I can read my battery life remaining nor an I individually adjust the volume on my aids. This SEEMS to have changed when I updated my iPhone 14 Pro software last week, but I could not testify that the phone software update has caused my hearing aid connectivity issues. As it is, OticonCompanion serves no useful purpose for me.

By

Bad connectivity and only basic functionality

As others have noted, Bluetooth connectivity is hit and miss, with “miss” occurring far more frequently than should be the case. OticonCompanion also only offers limited, basic functionality that should be expanded if it’s to serve as an integral part of a very expensive hearing system. For example, currently a simple three band equalizer is available for streaming. Why not make a more powerful EQ that can be used under any circumstances? Why not allow users the ability to customize or adjust settings as needed?

I hope that the developer upgrades OticonCompanion in ways that optimize the functionality of their hearing aids and does this fairly quickly. If hardware depends on software to achieve its full potential, the software can’t be an afterthought.

Better After Improvements

The Companion App was first downloaded around 13 - 14 September 2023. I experienced the same problems noted in previous reviews. Companion app deleted and Oticon ON reinstalled. I really liked ON and the symbols for different features.

Today I discovered that ON was no longer available. Oticon Customer Support was called. After a wait (no unusual for any customer support), I was connected with LeAnn (sp). She informed me that app changes had been made and to delete the Companion app and reinstall upgraded version. I did and she walked me through the pairing process. Now the Companion app is working as it should. Although I liked better the way the ON app allowed feature changes.

I advise deleting the Companion app if you have had it for a week or more and reinstalling from App Store. Good luck!

Lacks functionality + Slow unnecessary animations

As far as I can tell, the only reason to use OticonCompanion is to turn on speech booster— otherwise the native iOS functionality is faster for adjusting volume and switching programs.

- App says firmware is up to date on hearing aids, even when they are very out of date. No way to update or even know updates are available for devices.
- No way to adjust volume mix for telecoil vs mic
- no way to adjust volume mix of streaming audio vs mic. 3 band equalizer so crude as to be effectively useless
- can’t apply any eq to mic sounds, only streaming. So, if you wanted to adjust your mymusic experience for a particular moment, you can’t.
- related, but no way to have some play over eq for better communication with audiologist during fitting.
- connection speed to aids ludicrously slow, yet native iOS functionality is always connected and zippy fast
- new app has even more unnecessary, slow animations that slow everything down, why???
- toggles and buttons respond with delay, so you wind up toggling features on-then-off-then-on-then-off because you can’t tell it registered your input
- app (and prior app) didn’t bother to notify users that prior app was replaced and won’t even boot in ios17. You’d have to know that service was being discontinued, otherwise, you just lose functionality to your hearing aids.

Frustrating and useless app

I utterly hate this new app. Do OticonCompanion developers actually wear hearing aids and have to use this useless app? Less than 48 hours after being forced to download this new app I hate it so much I am seriously considering replacing the two pairs of hearing aids in my home with a new hearing aid manufacturer.

The previous app allowed me to remain connected to three devices. My personal iPhone, personal iPad and my work iPad. Yes! I was connected to three devices on purpose and I loved it! I could join MSTeams meetings for work with my hearing aids. Hands free calls were a breeze on the phone and the iPad was perfect for using a sleep app or watching movies as I travel. We could connect to our television with ease.

Now I can barely keep the aids connected to one device. Nothing works. I have “forgotten” the hearing aids on all devices and attempted to pair only on my phone. My hearing aids are constantly disconnecting from OticonCompanion on my phone and connecting to my husbands phone. It is frustrating to have to repeatedly repair my hearing aids to my phone. I am unable to control my hearing aids at all. And now my husbands hearing aids are connected to both his phone and mine.

This upgrade is beyond useless. The trouble shooting in OticonCompanion is even more useless.

NEW VERSION, NO WATCH COMPLICATIONS?

I am using iOS 17.0 and watch OS 10.0.

The previous app had a watch complication that allowed quick access to OticonCompanion so I could make quick changes to my hearing aids without drawing attention to myself. Now I either have to spend time scrolling through the apps on my watch to find it, or pull out my phone to load OticonCompanion . Both take time and can be perceived as not paying attention to the one speaking. For those of you that don’t know or don’t care, THAT IS INCREDIBLY RUDE!

I really wish I could switch back to the older version, but I can’t because I’m forced to use the new version. Looks like I have I’ll have to keep my hearing aids volume increased. When my audiologist asks why my hearing aid batteries aren’t lasting like they used to, I’ll explain to her that the new Oticon app is half baked and Oticon obviously no longer cares about its users.

Forced to switch, but hearing aids aren’t compatible

I am using Oticon Opn hearing aids. I have been an Oticon ON app user for a long time. I also use a TV streaming device. Most importantly, I used OticonCompanion to switch programs on my hearing aids, so that I can use the streamer.

When I attempt to pair my Oticon Opn hearing aids with this new “Companion” app, it gives me an error message that my “hearing aids are not compatible with OticonCompanion.” Even though OticonCompanion Store description says that it’s compatible with all Oticon Bluetooth hearing aids (albeit with certain features limited for some models).

Now that I’ve been forced (locked) out of the old Oticon ON app, I have no way to switch my hearing aid programs other than to use the native iPhone Hearing Aid management tools. This switch has been a disaster for customers who’ve been relying on a solution that worked just fine. Now we are forced out of ANY solution.

Terrible!

OticonCompanion and the older app are terrible. The hearing aids are outstanding so I find it hard to believe that this company cannot develop an app that will work properly and stay connected. If you leave the phone for any period of time the hearing aids need to be restarted to reconnect. Why not have OticonCompanion ping for the hearing aids periodically and connect aromatically? Also as of the latest update by apple and or Oticon or both I cannot get my hearing aids to connect through OticonCompanion at all. I tried restarting the phone and OticonCompanion but no luck. If Oticon would just get out of the proprietary mode and simply allow them to connect like any other device that may solve their issues resulting in improved customer experience. I had high hopes for significant improvements over the previous app but this one is actually worse if that is possible. Very disappointed.

Companion App - disconnect of hearing aids

I recently fumbled through the installation process for your new Oticon Companion App. I am not a “techie” so I had a great deal of difficulty with the entire process.
After the program was installed, and appeared to be working (without all the features shown on the preview) I was able to make sound level adjustments and check the battery charge level. Since the installation the App has become disconnected from my right hearing aid. It has happened 3 times in one 24 hour period. The only way I can reconnect to OticonCompanion is to turn the phone off and back on. This is very annoying. I notice from other rating reviews that this happens to others as well and that you are attempting to correct this issue. I would prefer to have the former program available for use by those who were satisfied with it. C J Staples

Downloaded and used as part of the Beta test group. The feed back I left then is STILL the same. Continually disconnecting from the left hearing aid and then takes several tries to reconnect. Only to have to repeat the process several times during the day. Also if you use the live microphone there will be times it won’t give up its control so if you use the actual phone the person you are talking to can’t hear you. You need to reset network settings.
Despite the developer saying things have been fixed they haven’t. Contact the developer was their last response…great and how would I do that? Oticon plays everything so close to the chest you can’t get any response.
If you want a laugh read the responses left on the reviews. It’s pretty much one of three canned response….or they use a chatbot to respond.

Pathetic

You’re going to make people switch to OticonCompanion and it’s far from being ready to use. Every morning my husband and I have to reconnect OticonCompanion to our hearing aids because thus useless app tends to forget them overnight. Throughout the day we may have to do the same thing so we can switch from general (active use) to either comfort (we use for outside or really loud places) or tv (we have a box that lets us listen to the tv at our own preferred levels). OticonCompanion is constantly disconnecting from my R hearing aid so I have to take it off, place it back jn the charger, take it out again and hope oticon connection lives up to its name which it doesn’t. Why not leave Oticon On available for those of us who can’t get companion to work like it’s supposed to? If this is my only app choice, I won’t use one

By

Whhhhhyyyyy?

So I opened the original app today so I could turn the volume up on my hearing aid just to see a message that said OticonCompanion isn’t available any longer but here is this new & better one & I say to myself ok let’s download it. I download it just to get in there & attempt to pair my hearing aid no less than 10 times to no avail! Every time I tried I got a message saying that OticonCompanion couldn’t pair with my hearing aid & now everytime I go into the old app it won’t open so I have no way to control the volume & my hearing aid is now doing nothing for me! This is ridiculous & why would you make the other app unavailable for operation if you’re not gonna make sure that all of the hearing aids that worked on the old app also work on this one! How irresponsible!!!

By

So slow compared to the previous app.

With the previous app all I had to do is open OticonCompanion and change the setting to stream to my TV blue tube streamer. It took just a few seconds. The new app takes way too long to pair my hearing aids every time I use it, then it takes even more time to upload and open the volume controls. This is unacceptable. When I watch TV with other people, everyone has to wait until this annoying app is ready. The previous one was seamless. Why is this “new and improved” so much worse.

I haven’t deleted the previous app yet. I’m hoping I will be able to go back to using it until the new one works reasonably well. Please give us a choice.

Big improvement over oticon On

I never write reviews but I feel compelled to because there are so many negative ones which is very different from my experience. I installed this in iOS 16 and now using in iOS 17 without issue. I have an iPhone 13pro -I’ll start with the biggest improvement which is the Apple Watch complication (it’s called “companion”). The previous one required using the Digital Crown to change volume which was very imprecise. The current complication has a + and - button to push which is much better. Also it has a toggle for the speech booster function which is new. -the iPhone app itself is about the same as the prior version, very responsive and connected to my oticon miniRite hearing aids easily. -OticonCompanion shows estimated battery time (ie x hours ) remaining on the hearing aids in addition to the percentage charge remaining I almost didn’t download the new app because of the poor reviews but I’m glad I did. I’d encourage you to give it a try and decide for yourself.

Very frustrating!

Dear Oticon,
If I could rate this as zero stars I would do that. I had the former Oticon app on my iPhone 14 and a TV adapter. I had no difficulties with navigating and implementing OticonCompanion . Now I’m stuck with an “improved Oticon app” (since the former one was disabled) that won’t sync with my hearing aids. I’ve read the instruction manual and troubleshooting suggestions to no avail. My phone no longer recognizes my hearing aids and I can’t use the TV adapter without OticonCompanion . I wrote an email via OticonCompanion a few days ago but no response. I just wrote a follow up email today. Since you responded to the other person who wrote about her issues, I thought I would try here. My hearing aids use batteries (not rechargeable). My hearing aids are Oticon miniRITE and my TV adapter is the Oticon 3.0. My phone is an iPhone 14.
Please respond.

The LEAST Reliable App I’ve Ever Used

I was a 5 year user of Resound hearing aids and their iPhone app. I switched to Oticon several months ago, making a $5K investment. I was thrilled with the effectiveness of the hearing aids, but the Companion app was a constant problem. I switched to the older ON app and had extremely few problems… then Oticon pulled it from OticonCompanion Store! In that week or so, I have had CONSTANT, CONSTANT connection problems and have been forced to learn to control my hearing aids with the buttons on the devices. I’ve deleted and reinstalled OticonCompanion countless times, only to have constant problems to even be able to pair my devices! I’ve had a computer since 1981, and an iPhone since they were first introduced, so I am no amateur at this. I had almost NO ISSUES with my Resound app during the 5 years I used it! The performance of the Oticon hearing aids is so good that that is the only thing that keeps me from regretting my choice of Oticon. My stream of correspondence with Oticon has included MUCH detail of what I’ve been through, but the replies have been more apologetic than helpful. GIVE ME BACK OTICON “ON” until Companion is really ready for prime time!!!!

Shameful treatment of people using hearing aids

I wrote another review a few days ago describing the reasons OticonCompanion is terrible. My concerns echo everyone else who wrote a review and is stuck with OticonCompanion. I also contacted customer support but have not received anything back that will help. I will be contacting my insurance company who actually paid for my expensive hearing aids. Mine are only a little I’ve a year old and I was happily using the old app, which worked fine. Then one morning a week or so ago they disabled the old app and required us to use this non functioning one. Hearing loss is a DISABILITY! This company is crassly disregarding the needs of the hearing impaired. There has been no explanation from the company. I will be contacting someone from the office of the ADA. At the very least the company should let us use the old app and they should give us all an explanation. They should also pay us all for the lack of functionality during this time. I’m thinking a class action lawsuit might be appropriate.

New app creates pairing problems every time I switch devices

I was forced to download the new Oticon Companion app a few days ago because the previous Oticon ON app is no longer supported. However, it instantly has caused pairing problems with both my iPad and my iPhone, and restarting the HAs or manually or by putting in charger does not fix the issues. The only way I have been able to pair to either iPad or iPhone is to restart each of them, individually, every single time I want to pair or switch. Even then I sometimes have to *also* restart the HAs. Before this new app, I was switching pretty seamlessly between my iOS devices all day without issue. I have deleted Companion app from both my devices, and will just have to pair via iOS Accessiblity panel, so I have none of the Oticon app features. I am so frustrated. It just took me 10 minutes to prepare to make a phone call, which for a HoH person is difficult enough. Please fix this pairing problem ASAP.

This new app is inconsistent

I used the Oticon On app since I got my hearing aids 3 years ago and it was a game changer for me. I no longer missed phone calls because with the Bluetooth connection I would hear phone calls even if I was separated from my phone. And being able to hear directly in my aids from my phone was wonderful!
But this new app, Oticon Companion, is very inconsistent with the Bluetooth connection, so I miss more of my phone calls and can no longer listen through the Bluetooth to audible books on my phone. It leaves me feeling very frustrated and no longer feel good about the Oticon brand. OticonCompanion is pretty worthless, but there is no other alternative if you have Oticon hearing aids. 😡I have no idea why they thought changing OticonCompanion was a good business move.
I’m hoping they get the kinks worked out soon with OticonCompanion, but looking at the other low ratings in the reviews it looks like I might be holding my breath for nothing.

Previous version worked automatically between phone and IPad

I’m disappointed with this new version. The previous version worked great with automatically connecting to either my IPhone or IPads by just turning on or off the Bluetooth of desired device.
This new version doesn’t work very well when switching back from the iPhone to the iPad. I have tried restarting the hearing aids, opening and closing OticonCompanion , but almost every time I need to reboot my iPad. Then it works.
My other issue has to do with OticonCompanion orientation on my IPad. It will only present in the portrait mode. I rarely use my iPad in that orientation while watching streaming video. The previous version would rotate to the orientation of the iPad.
Can an update be done to correct these 2 issues.
I love being able to hear phone calls and video through my aids. It was easy, and now it’s a bit more difficult.

Not a dependable app

I was forced to download the Oticon Companion app as the Oticon On app was being disabled for use. The Oticon On had finally been working properly and my hearing aids were staying connected (most of the time) and here I am back to square one… this new ‘improved’ app is so much worse than the old app ever was! I have uninstalled and reinstalled the’New’ app multiple times to see if that would help it function any better. Then reconnected my hearing aids as many times as well… Nothing seems to help. Does anyone at Oticon even wear hearing aids? If they did they would get really serious about getting the irritating, frustrating lack of dependable ‘companionship’ between OticonCompanion and the user’s hearing aids corrected ASAP.

It’s now October 1st and the frustration goes on with this Oticon ’Companion’ App… I would not have picked it for my companion if I had the choice between it and the Oticon On App! OticonCompanion is torture 🙄.

Horrible “New” App

User reviews on the Apple AppStore are incredibly numerous and bad regarding your new app. The reviews are 100% correct and your responses to the reviewers are less than adequate. Many of the hearing compromised customers are also elderly and even less able to adapt to your horrible app updates. The situation makes the $5K investment in the hearing aids practically useless.

When will you actually be applying a fix to the Companion app so that both hearing aids connect easily, quickly and remain connected? Please provide a specific date in your response!

Your responses to reviews go back many months now and alway say the same thing - ‘you are working on an update.’ Time is of the essence for your community of hearing impaired individuals. Your poor service and unusable ‘new’ app is negatively impacting the daily lives of your customers who paid top money for your hearing aids. You should be ashamed of your company and your association with it. This is an absolute disgrace. All of your customers deserve better!!

I hate this app

Since changing to Companion - I had no option since the previous app was taken down - I have had nothing but problems. I use OticonCompanion to connect to my tv. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. It cuts out in the middle of a program. I have to reboot OticonCompanion on a daily basis to reconnect my hearing aids to OticonCompanion , three times in the last hour. With the previous version, I left OticonCompanion open all the time, both to make access easier and to make sure OticonCompanion tracked the location of my hearing aids. If I leave this version open for more than a few hours, I have to reboot and/or reconnect. Needless to say, routine adjustments to volume and switching to Speech in Noise are also affected by whether or not OticonCompanion has disconnected from my hearing aids. Was planning on upgrading my hearing aids and now seriously considering switching to another manufacturer just so I can avoid OticonCompanion.

Terrible

The companion is ok if it works but I have found it doesn’t work much of the time. I have my third set of Omicron aids and have always been satisfied until this new app. It is terrible and has using my aids almost impossible. I have to constantly delete OticonCompanion and then pair them since one or both of them stop working. I would get them working again and shortly thereafter one would lose the pairing and fail to work. At one time I could not even change the programming. I took them back to the person I purchased them from and she spoke to a Omicron representative and she followed instructions to reprogram them and they worked properly until I left her office. I got so desperate that I took off the molds and placed them on my old aids. I can not recommend Omicron to anyone and before I used to praise the The companion software has bugs in it that it almost makes it impossible to use OticonCompanion for an entire day. It works sometimes and when you least expect it stops working and you are left in the dark. I have been complaining since it was released but no one has ever called me from the company. They think that we are all computer savvy but fail to take into account that many of us are disabled and can’t always follow their instructions and there are times when we do it still doesn’t help.

By

Companion? Not Really

On one hand, I’m kind of relieved that the reviews are so bad. It tells me that I’m not stupid. I followed the poorly written instructions exactly and after a few tries I got it. Everything the hearing aids could do with this terrible app seemed to be working. The next time I used OticonCompanion there were connectivity problems. I haven’t tried to reconnect. I just wear the hearing aids without OticonCompanion . The big question I have is what app for anything can’t simply turn the power on and off. On the hearing aids themselves, the buttons are awful and hard to tell when the have been pressed or not. Chemotherapy has made the ends of my fingers numb all the time and it makes the operation of the aids even harder. So, junk hearing aids and a terrible app for $4000. Bright and early tomorrow I’ll be contacting my audiologist to inform him that I want out of Oticon. I will also be leaving an accurate review on Oticon’s official website. Don’t bother to reply.

Making steady improvements

I have the Opticon Real 2’s. Yes, I do get some connection issues from time to time. I find it’s easiest to force quit OticonCompanion by dragging it off the screen in multi-finder mode, and then it’s fine.

The old Oticon On app had a nicer interface, and seemed more solid with my Opn2’s, but there are also new features in the Oticon Companion, that have really changed how I use hearing aids, and what I’m getting out of them. Admittedly, some of this may be due to the expertise of the audiologist in tuning and setting up the hearing aids. I also used to be in computer tech-support, which I suppose helps.

At this point, I would say that the Oticon Companion app is not only more than adequate, but it takes advantage of new features that weren’t available on previous hearing aids. On newer hearing aids, it’s probably worth it to check for firmware updates with your audiologist as well.

The worst!

I used to have the Oticon app that came before this one and it worked awesome (I have Oticon Opn S1 aids). Upon opening OticonCompanion it would connect my hearing aids almost instantly, giving me quick and easy access to the volume controls and the programs, such as the tv adapters I have. This new app however, upon opening, takes so long to connect to my hearing aids, sometimes minutes!! The best way I’ve gotten it to work is by quitting and reopening OticonCompanion several times until it connects, otherwise it will just get stuck on stupid for a long time. I’ll be sitting on the couch ready to watch a movie with my husband and we both have to sit there for minutes just to see my aids pop up on OticonCompanion so that I can control the volume of the tv adapter before we can start. It’s terrible and really needs to be fixed. Of course I can connect to the tv adapter without OticonCompanion but I need OticonCompanion in order to control the volume, as the default volume is much too loud for me. Anyway, I miss the old app. Please fix this one!!

What is this app SUPPOSED to do??

Some days OticonCompanion records my wear time. Some days it says it does but then the next day it’s gone. Or some days it doesn’t record anything even though I’ve opened and connected (yes I verified) to OticonCompanion several times during the day just to kind of troubleshoot… So I only have the days that it decided to keep. 🙄

I only have a “General” program so there’s nothing for me to adjust. I do like being able to adjust each hearing aid separately. I don’t notice a significant difference with the voice enhancement and the equalizer options aren’t all that special. Connectivity can be sketchy despite my phone being in my work vest pocket . These are my first hearing aids so I don’t have anything else to compare OticonCompanion to but I would say it’s bare bones basic. Nothing to rave about.

Upgraded my review, but I want the Apple Watch complication

I first installed OticonCompanion on iOS 16. It was slow, unstable, and lacking features found in the “ON” app. I went back to using the old “ON” app.

Eventually I upgraded to iOS 17, but I was careful to remove the ON app first, and restarted my phone and Apple Watch to make sure it was gone. Companion works much better on iOS 17. It’s slower to connect to my hearing aids than the ON app, but if you leave Companion running the connection seems stable. It makes the connection quickly enough when I turn on my hearing aids in the morning.

Now the question is when will Oticon bring back the Apple Watch complication? A complication is so much easier to use than finding an app in the stack. PLEASE - bring back the complication. I’ll give you 5 stars if you do.

This app is terrible.

I have an iPhone 13 and an iPad 7th generation and both should be compatible with OticonCompanion according to both Oticon support when I called and also my audiologist. The very first time installing OticonCompanion in audiologists office OticonCompanion installed easily enough but would not pair with my hearing aids. Had to uninstall app then try again. This time was successful. I got home with hearing aids still paired to app on my phone. I got a phone call and on the second ring my hearing aids said “disconnected” and I tried to answer the call but was not able to. I opened OticonCompanion and it was showing me to pair my hearing aids again. I tried several times with no luck. Ended up uninstalling OticonCompanion and putting my hearing aids back in the charger for the 4th time then I reinstalled OticonCompanion and then took the hearing aids out of charger to re pair them again. This time it worked but the next morning they would not connect again. I have to uninstall OticonCompanion then reinstall it every time I put my hearing aids in. I am 58 years old and do not want to have to do this every day.

Good and annoying features

We’ll there are good and bad things about OticonCompanion. First the good- I like the programs and the quick access. The music program is clearly fuller than the general program and the equalizer let’s you program it further. The lecture mode is good for watching tv. It’s so good that my wife complains when I turn the sound down because it’s too loud. Maybe she should get her own hearing aids? Now the bad - I have to reboot OticonCompanion almost every morning because one device fails to connect properly - annoying. Moreover, the Bluetooth program they are using is horrible. If my Apple phone is in my right pocket then the left hearing aid will often skip when listening to music and vice versa. Phone in left pocket and right aid skips occasionally. Surely you can do better than that! I have an appt today with audiologist. If she can fix that then I’ll report back. One device also uses a charge faster than the other. It seems like oticon should balance the electronics in the two devices before sending them out? I’ll also ask about that. Overall, ok but not great

Connection issues ruin the app

Oticon has had months to work with the iOS 17 beta, to ensure that the Companion app would work perfectly when it was released to the general public. Unfortunately, there are major connection issues here. I'm not sure it's entirely the fault of OticonCompanion , or whether it's also just the terrible Bluetooth in Oticon hearing aids. However, even when the Hearing Devices section of the phone settings says it's connected to both hearing aids, the Companion app will usually say either just one is connected or both are disconnected. Yes, restarting the hearing aids, OticonCompanion , and even the phone can eventually connect the devices, but to have to go through this *each time* you want the Companion app to work with the hearing aids is insane.

I *just* got new Oticon Real hearing aids (upgrading from my old Oticons), and I love them, but OticonCompanion really destroys the experience. At this point, I honestly wish Apple would get into the hearing aids business and wipe out the competition.

Sketchy and vague

When it works not bad, but when it acts up little help and DAYS before a general response comes from developer/app/unknown entity! Then vague query like they never read original request for help!
Next it must be YOUR fault! I only have 1 streaming source it is for the TV!
So blaming issue on multiple streaming sources… not sure why things are designed with so many middlemen!?!
One thing to deal with and cope with hearing loss; quite another to be offered a solution… that works sometimes! So much is missed with power downs reboots deleting and reinstalling and all the troubleshooting; almost as if it is designed to FAIL when you want to use it!
Turn down volume before logging off, when powered up again it is back at high volume level!
Sticky settings… grrrr and help desk is many time zones away!
What is the point of selling tech if it isn’t helpful!
People can’t be reached in a timely manner!

This isn’t about among or some inane activity, quality of life!!!
Stress on top of stress!!!

Apple IPhone connectivity

I loaded the brand new version of Oticon Companion today. It some features that may be helpful. However, they did not address the connectivity to an iPhone. I have no problem connecting to an iPad my car if needed but still after multiple attempts to connect with an iPhone it does not work. I was able to previously connect with removal of the Oticon Companion app, and it worked better. but then it stopped the last week or two. I was hoping that the new app would help with connectivity. However, I don’t see any improvement. Maybe they should just consider connecting with Bluetooth instead of their own app. I seriously hope they discusses with the Apple engineers, as they seem to have gotten it, correct and Oticon engineers do not seem to get this right again. I cannot use the features that I’ve gone into this new app because I cannot connect to my phone

By

Beeping

I don’t have any of the connection problems that others report but what I can’t figure out is this beeping that occurs occasionally in my hearing aids. It’s 5 sets of three beeps in a row. It happens every few days. It doesn’t not seem to coincide with a battery level that I can tell. I don’t know what it’s for. I have all notifications turned off and when I go into OticonCompanion after it does it to see why they may be trying to alert me, there is nothing. The first time it happened I was driving and it startled me. I’m lucky I didn’t run off the road. The old app never triggered these beeps in my hearing aids.

Data Link issues

I got my Oticon hearing aids last September. I am really pleased with them and am still amazed at how much I was not hearing before.

That being said, the current version of the Oticon Companon app is really poor. All of the functions work except for tracking usage. The prior version of OticonCompanion worked fine with my iPhone 11. The current version loses the data link every night while the aids are charging. I have to delete OticonCompanion , reinstall it and then do the whole setup each day if I want to track usage.

In addition, OticonCompanion wants me to allow tracking all the time. I prefer not to have any app track me 24x7. The current app will not allow tracking only while using OticonCompanion .

Oticon should back up a version and restore the functionality they removed and broke.

By

Works great

I just received my new Oticon hearing aids about a week ago. They have been a game changer for sure. OticonCompanion seems to work flawlessly since using a week. I have an Apple 15 Pro max and used the action button for a shortcut to OticonCompanion . Makes it super easy to access OticonCompanion . I don’t even need to open the main screen.

By

Stinks

Look at the number of reviews that are negative. OticonCompanion stinks. It you do not use it multiple times per day it will no longer connect with the hearing aids. The only thing to do at that point is delete OticonCompanion and reinstall. The developers have been told this for months. The original version of their app was great. I never had an issue with it. This new version - it just stinks. I am a pilot and need to turn my hesring aids down, sometimes multiple times throughout the day. It never works. I am not exaggerating. It never works. PLEASE someone fix this!

By

App update failure

Since I installed the newest version of OticonCompanion I have noticed that I have NO history of wear time. First time I open OticonCompanion I can see a history for the previous day. Next time I open OticonCompanion (same day) there is NO history for the previous day. Says no data linked. Was working fine before the update. Did the developer even fully test this update before releasing it to the world? Using an iPhone 14 Pro.

By

Room for improvement

I am experiencing frequent cut out of Bluetooth streaming, so I would really like this to be fixed.

Also, the equalizer function does not stay active. OticonCompanion needs to be opened to reactivate the equalizer’s affect on streaming. This is inconvenient for someone who relies on the equalizer.

Kudos to Oticon for continuing to develop OticonCompanion and making improvements. I am excited to see the future of OticonCompanion .

By

Too many steps

Once you have seen the new version available that should be it, but no! We have to see it each time you try to open OticonCompanion . then it waste your time taking you to the “GET” screen what you already GOT! Then the “OPEN” button where you should have been from start since you already loaded it once before.
Sincerely, Stephen T.

Features don’t always work

Since 2/29 the hearing fitness feature of wearing time rarely works. I’ve deleted & reinstalled OticonCompanion per Oticon app support but that didn’t solve the issue. Also per support I’ve closed & restarted OticonCompanion but that didn’t work either. I was then told to try another feature first but the problem persists.

By

Still can’t switch between phone and iPad

Instead of changing the colors on your app, oticon, why don’t you fix the real problems. No matter how many times I reboot my hearing aids or phone/ipad, it doesn’t transfer to the other. Even when one unit is completely off. This is not a complicated issue, but it is a basic function. I have used oticon aids for decades, but these two will be my last.

By

New interface look, no real benefit. In fact it loads slower than the old app

Would not have downloaded if not forced to. Far inferior to previous version. They recommend deleting the old version (which I did) but it didn’t help. Might have slowed it down even more.

By

Garbage - Truly

Just bought new Oticon hearing aids and figured I get the best: for almost $8,000, OticonCompanion is USELESS. It takes way longer to reconnect the devices than they STAY connected!

My older aids worked to a better extent than my new ones, so this is on a real downhill slide!

Unreal how awful OticonCompanion is! Fortunately, I’m still within my “money back” period, cause this has been a waste of time.

By

I don’t use the app

I use the utility screen on my iPhone. The show is on almost 5 minutes before it connects. I’ve been using the iPhone instead of your app for almost a year. You need to keep the tv settings on longer. You get up to do something pause the tv you go to sit down and you have to adjust it again. Crazy

By

Unreliable

Great app IF and when it works properly. Constantly fails to connect one or the other hearing aid, and repeatedly fails to show the 4 hearing aid programs I have. And the battery level display inaccurate. Companion was touted as an improvement over ON, which was also unreliable; it isn’t.

By

Repeatedly close & lockup

I’ve used Starkey hearing Ian’s the apps for years without an issue. PERIOD!
OticonCompanion is a piece of trash. It constantly asks you to pair when I got to adjust the sound level. It’s embarrassing that you can produce a good quality hearing aid but can’t get OticonCompanion functionality.

By

No bueno¡

You need to scrap OticonCompanion and start over. As others have said, and as the over all rating reflects, OticonCompanion is pretty much useless, except for adjusting volume, and that only works when the aids have stayed connected. Seriously, decide what you want OticonCompanion to do, then hire a well qualified software designer to build us a new app, from scratch. This one is fubar.

By

Doesn’t stay connected to iPhones

These hearing aids will connect to my iPad but not my iPhone. They used to connect to the iPhone but they would lose the connection over and over.
Needs to be fixed.

By

Doesn’t work

Although my iPhone connects to my oticon hearing aids , I have never been able to connect with OticonCompanion. The older app word a lot better. It does pair with the device but just says “connecting” with app and never connects. I can use my accessory to change minimal setting but can’t use app for anything. It does not connect.

By

My hearing aids won’t say paired

Before the new app came out my aids were always paired, so that sound came directly into the aids. Now they don’t stay paired. Sometimes the instructions to get the aids paired on OticonCompanion don’t come up. It’s frustrating, especially because they have known in the past how to avoid this problem.

By

Works Great!!

Not sure why everyone is complaining. I don’t think it’s a big deal that the hearing aids disconnect from OticonCompanion while they are charging. It literally takes 10 seconds for them to reconnect to OticonCompanion once you put the hearings aids back on. I think OticonCompanion works great. I love the ability to increase the volume, adjust the equalizer, boost voice recognition, etc… stop complaining people and simply enjoy the features that OticonCompanion offers you!! 😊

By

Sketchy at best

When it occasionally works it is great, but I have just (again!) spent 5 minutes trying to get my hearing devices to connect with OticonCompanion . I turned them off, then on, twice—waited each time—nothing. Then I put them into the charger, and removed them—again nothing. Very frustrated and disappointed with OticonCompanion ’s inability to connect. Why have an app if it doesn’t connect easily to the hearing devices? Love the comfort of the hearing devices—hate OticonCompanion !!

By

Oticon App

OticonCompanion is not high functioning. The battery levels stopped being accurate about a week after downloading. Thought deleting and reloading app would maybe reset it. Nope. So that part doesn’t work. The other settings seem to work.

By

Unable to track usage through app

Near the beginning of March my hearing air stopped effectively syncing with OticonCompanion . I can adjust my settings, locate my hearing aids and access all functions except tracking usage. Even after forgetting the device on my phone and re-pairing multiple times the usage still does not work properly. Disappointing.

By

Hearing aids will never stay paired

The inconsistency of my hearing aids remaining pared with OticonCompanion is extremely concerning for the regift of the overall app. Every time I open OticonCompanion , even when I switch from the Oticon app to another and back, I have to re-pair my hearing aids.

This really makes me questing the integrity of OticonCompanion , their ability to effectively connect with my phone, and operate effectively overall.

Community comments

SO glad to find these comments. I truly thought I was losing my mind. My Previous hearing aids were less than $1000 Resound hearing aids that were very reliable and easily accessible Simple pairing with the iPhone : Take them from the substantial closed charger. Put them in my ears and turn on the phone! These $6,000 Oticons have no relationship, consistent pairing nor clear guidance for operation. The Resound User interface was graphic and animated. These Oticon aids and charger are unwieldy and frequently just turn off after wearing for an hour or two. I’ve had them for 2or3 months, with a lot of visits to the office. The performance is deteriorating and every visit cost (even if my dog HAD NOT eaten them and caused them to require replacement ) I then paid TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS for a heavier charger that closed so that it could sit on my nightstand and not exposed, inviting the puppy to take the devices, being far more interesting than her many objects DESIGNED and abundantly available for chewing. I was originally going to get Resound devices. If I can return these Oticons

Make sure your hearing aids are connected to only 1 device.

I find OticonCompanion is useful in switching between different programs and volume. But then I couldn’t connect to OticonCompanion for awhile unless I power off and on my iPhone. This was very annoying and I followed all the recommended steps in OticonCompanion but to no avail. It took a few emails with support to finally figure out that the hearings aids can only be connected to 1 device at a time. Kristian was very good on finally recommending that. I think that point should be labeled clearly in the to do section when the user cannot connect because nowadays most people probably have more than 1 Apple device.

I had the ‘OticonOn’ for over a year, then was switched by my audiologist to the ‘this app’ app. Therefore, I believe I am qualified enough to constructively critique OticonCompanion correctly.

O.Companion negative characteristics-

40 second startup time from initial app reboot
All app features not seamlessly responsive
Occasionally, some features never respond at all after a reboot (ie.- volume control, human voice focus)
human voice focus feature not reliable in either noisy or quite environments
Perhaps this is the best which current technologies can offer at this time. However, I am certain most individuals who move to hearing aids are primarily interested in achieving greater human voice recognition, above all. They are not concerned with enhancing their hearing for anything else, as only quality human communication is paramount to all rational individuals.

Were a hearing aid developed that would block all other sounds, yet substantially enhance only the voice of my grandchild standing in front of me, I could easily accept any other flaws in its performance.

Until then, the joke about hearing aids being expensive ear plugs will remain.

Does Not Work Switching To Multiple Devices!

This Companion App is OK so long as you have one device. But if you got 2 or more iPhones or an iPhone and iPad combo, it’s a NO go. You either have to “forget this device” in the IOS hearing settings or shut your hearing aid off or put it back in the charger and take it out when you want to switch to another device. Therefore OticonCompanion is pretty much useless to me on my Real 1 hearing aids except for its “find this device” feature. I deleted it on two phones and kept it on a third one since I rarely use that one. I do get Music on my iPad on my Real 1 by just using the Settings for hearing aids.

Beyond frustrating

Since I was forced to switch to Oticon Companion, it frequently drops the Bluetooth connection. Sometimes I can reconnect by following the instructions on OticonCompanion just by turning the aids off and then on again, which is bad enough. But more and more frequently, I have to place the aids on the charger and then go through the whole reconnect rigamarole.

Also, OticonCompanion is VERY slow to load anytime I want to use it. I never had any issues with Oticon On. It’s been well over a year since Companion launched- it’s past time to work out the bugs.

New app does not work with my hearing aids-UPDATE-

Yes, my hearing aids are 5 years old, bought $300 charger, company went bankrupt? and had to buy batteries for over 4 years. Now they”upgrade” OticonCompanion and no longer do I have Bluetooth for my hearing aids, every time I open OticonCompanion it wants to pair them. They don’t stay paired at all. Why can’t I use the old app that worked and I had Bluetooth? I will not buy another pair of Oticon. And yes, I did email them, got one response but then emailed again and no individual response.
I went today to the hearing center and told her my problem. It really was an easy fix - CONNECT TO BLUETOOTH BEFORE OPENING THE OTICON APP. THEN OPEN THE OTICON APP AND PAIR AND IT ACTUALLY WORKS. Why couldn’t Oticon have told me that?

Slow connection

I contacted the seller in mid October 2023 informing them the Bluetooth connectivity was slow and sometimes I have to restart OticonCompanion several times to get it to connect with my hearing aids at all. They responded they are currently working to make it connect faster. Now in mid April 2024 there have been no improvements. I sometimes have to fiddle with this 4 or 5 minutes to get it to connect. This is very frustrating. I wish I had never upgraded to this version. I am very disappointed with the performance.

Doesn’t Work

Wish I could give zero stars. I recently ordered new Oticon hearing aids but OticonCompanion has made me cancel my order. I have used Oticon aids for 5 years and have had no complaints about the Oticon On app. OticonCompanion simply does not work. It does not connect. If it does happen to connect it disconnects minutes later. So essentially it means I cannot adjust the volume or access any programming. That makes my hearing aids the equivalent of the hearing aids my father wore in 1980. I’ll be looking at other brands. Perhaps if they can sell their hearing aids they’ll fix OticonCompanion or go back to old app.

Bad app

I have had my hearing aids for several years and enjoyed the previous app. Not this newer version more times than not OticonCompanion is useless. The hearing aids no longer pair as the should. I find myself frustrated and removing my aids in noisy places as the control on my phone most often isn’t working and trying to fumble with the controls is frustrating. I will be checking around for another company that seems to be up in their technology after this.

The Oticon Companion app might have more bells and whistles, but from a reliability standpoint, it certainly is not an upgrade. My hearing aids continually disconnect from my phone. Most of the time, I have to turn off my cell phone and start from scratch to reconnect. This rarely happened with the old app.

This app is a complete unmitigated disaster. I have had Oticon hearing aids for over 12 years and have happily used Oticon On. Then it was replaced by Companion(automatically, no choice). Since then I have been repeatedly unpaired. I follow the instructions. I go to Accessibility; I delete; I open and close the battery door. Most times my hearing aids don’t show up. When they do, most times they don’t pair. When they pair, most times they promptly unpair. This never happened before I had Companion foisted on me. At this point I basically can’t use my phone with my hearing aids. Say good bye to phone calls. Thanks Oticon

I haven’t had any of the connection issues everyone else seems to be having. My only recommendation is that you need a wider variety of apple watch faces this app is compatible with. I went through all the apple watch faces which there are around 50 to choose from. The oticon companion app was only compatible with around 6 of them. Out of the 6 only 2 were digital watch faces. I really really hope you add more watch faces this app is compatible with in the next update.

New app is terrible. Being forced to use it (old one discontinued) is even worse. "On" connected almost immediately and stayed connected. "Companion" takes forever, disconnects (un-pairs) frequently. In short, it is at best an unreliable Beta that should not even be released yet. Boo. Zero Stars if that would be possible.

Like other users I have been forced to drop the good ON app in favour of Companion which is giving me constant connection problems. Am in e mail dialogue with customer support which so far has not helped. They also do not seem to appreciate that many hearing aid users are elderly and have limited tech knowledge

Oticon Companion is very buggy. My wife and I will not even try to use it again until we hear there is an updated version. W used Oticon On for years now without many problems.

Oticon companion is a poor replacement for the original Oticon on app. Like many other users my hearing aids are constantly disconnecting and attempting reconnection. The functionality of the original app has disappeared and the Tinnitus setting is no longer visible or supported. Extremely frustrating and disappointing.

Cannot get it to work with my Apple Watch.

OTICON ON never disconnected from 6 AM to 10 PM. Companion requires constant attention as disconnects 3 - 4 times a day. After reseating battery several times to no avail and after deleting and reinstalling app it eventually requires me to reboot iPhone. Then connects without problem at least for a few hours. Available to discuss if needed. KC 9/17/23
