Fantastic and motivating app!

I absolutely love FantasyHike and it was well worth the $4 I spent on it! To be clear, I’m quite lazy a little of the time and definitely overweight and motivation to get off the couch has been my biggest obstacle in getting healthy. While I’m still not at the level of fitness I should be at, I’ve found myself exercising more and dropping a few pounds since I got FantasyHike a month ago. Just being able to go on and see how much I’ve walked today makes me want to go out and do just a little bit more each time. Whether it's just trying to get to my daily average so that it doesn’t go down, pushing harder to try and gain a little more ground on Mr. Underhill, or walking another mile or two to set a new daily record,I’m exercising a lot more just because of FantasyHike! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being such a big help! And by the way, it’s beautifully designed with detailed descriptions along the way! Five stars for sure!

Wow but slowing down.

I still really like FantasyHike and I will continue to use it. But I do wonder why the further you get into the journey the less distance you seem to cover with your real life steps. For instance it amazes me that somewhere in middle earth there’s a bush that’s a quarter of a mile wide.I realize that there’s only so much programmers can do, I just get frustrated that I only cover about an inch of ground in FantasyHike after walking 5 miles in real life. After the first couple miles at the beginning of the journey 1 inch was was equal about a mile in real life. That made sense and i felt rewarded as I watched my hobbit move along with me. Now i walk a couple miles and he has barely moved. Like I said, I still like FantasyHike and I am likely to still use it, but it’s less fun than it was now that I’ve passed Bree.
*Addition* I have been about an milimeter away from Weathertop for a month now. My avatar doesn’t appear to have moved at all for some days despite having walked several miles. I’m was excited about FantasyHike but I had to remove a star because it has become more discouraging than motivating.

Question…

So, the idea of FantasyHike is AWESOME! But in practice, I’m having trouble… if there is an answer that fixes my problem I will give this 5 stars but as for now… I spent the money to buy FantasyHike to be able to track more than one mile a day. I then bought an app that connects my fit bit to my health so that I can use that data to track my steps. So far it’s not working. The health app syncs fine, but it never uploads to fantasy hike. So it’s tracking just what my phone tracks, which since I don’t carry it with me all the time, is useless to me. So far I’m out $10 for nothing and I don’t see any type of help or support for FantasyHike. I’m trying to reach out this way and would love to change and update this review if I get answers…

UPDATE:

AWESOME!! Just awesome!!

There was an issue with how the data was being transferred from my Fitbit to fantasy hike and after speaking with one of the makers of FantasyHike (who got back to me within 24 hours) and troubleshooting together, they literally purchased the same Fitbit to see why it was working properly. They figured it out and updated to app just so I can walk to Mordor more accurately!!!

GREAT SERVICE! GREAT APP! GREAT THANKS!

Fun little LOTR fan exercise app!

This is one of the funnest most imaginative little apps I’ve ever seen. Must have for fans of Lord of the Rings. The background art and animation are truly inspired and the story line is simple, fun and easy to follow. FantasyHike creator obviously isn’t licensed from the Tolkien Estate and so has to make up approximate names for each of the milestones but the approximations are so clever you never have trouble understanding what “Halflington” is or “Comfort Hollow” or any of the other scenes familiar with the stories would know. It’s easy to forget this is a simple pedometer at heart. I’d give it 6 stars if it was available. Really well done.

Update: 345 days later ans I’ve walked 1780 miles and completed my quest. Just awesome and fun! Well worth the money.

Beautiful and Functional.

I bought FantasyHike because “Walk to Mordor” is not available for iPhone, but this one is so much more beautiful! I love that there is not only a map, but also a pictorial narrative of your journey you can scroll through. Between the narrative and the badges there are many more “rewards” in the for of story updates than in the other app. I also enjoy seeing how far behind “Mr. Underhill” I am! I do wish I had the option to enter distances manually, though, like in the other app—this one imports data directly from my “Health” pedometer, so I don’t have the option to give myself credit for biking. Pity, since Mr. Underhill uses horses and boats at times! All in all, eminently worth the $4.

Adorable

I’m a big fan of FantasyHike, it makes tracking my exercise enjoyable and makes me want to go further every time. This is more of a wishlist item, but I think it would be fun to have some music. I like the idea of putting in my earbuds with FantasyHike in the background playing appropriately themed music based on where on the map (or story) I am. I hit a marker while jogging, and the music changes to something more dramatic as I have reached the mountain, etc. I’m not sure how difficult that would be, but I think it would be a neat feature, that with enough variety I would pay extra for.

A delightful way to add character to step tracking

Minimalist but charming visuals, seamless integration with the iOS location and step tracking functions, and thoughtfully spaced progress updates and notifications (not so often as to be bothersome but often enough to grant a sense of accomplishment). This is the “definitely not Tolkien!” version of Walk to Mordor, with the character of the original but the names changed sufficiently (Mt. Fire vs Mount Doom, etc.) to avoid copyright claims. If you’re looking to simply walk into Mordor… this is the closest you’re going to get.

By

Awesome Fantasy App

I have tried a few other “walking to Mordor” apps, but this is by far the best. The active animation that shows you how far you’ve come is amazing, and the notifications are actually worth getting throughout the day. The author obviously put a lot of thought and effort into FantasyHike, and any Lord of the Rings or fantasy fan who is trying to stay active would be doing themselves a disservice by not downloading app. As a LOTR fanatic, I adore everything about FantasyHike.

Love the idea but ...

The idea and story of FantasyHike are excellent and really adds a bit more fun to walking. However, I have been using FantasyHike less than a week and already I have had 2 days which are WILDLY inaccurate. My normal daily distance is about 5.5 miles. So far it has been pretty accurate but one day this week somehow recorded 28 miles and as I write this it is only 7am and FantasyHike is logging nearly 9 miles already (I have only walked 4 miles). These inaccurate recording cannot be edited or changed (that I can find) so now it does really deal like my journey any longer. I will likely uninstall and see if I can get a refund.

By

It’s still dark

I bought and have been using FantasyHike for a few days and it’s been night nearly the whole time. I have lung issues and walk between 1.6 and 2 miles a day. The main picture turned to night at the beginning of day 2, after about 1.75 miles. Is it going to be dark the entire trip to Mount Fire?

Other than that, I love FantasyHike . Since I don’t go too far each day I love being able to “walk with” Hairyfoot Potter since I can keep up with him! Thanks for a great app…if I can figure out how to see “daylight” it’s worth five stars!

By

Great motivator, needs better pedometer support

Love FantasyHike , it just needs to be able to better sync with Apple Health or other pedometers like FitBit without needing to download other apps. I use a FitBit and have had to turn off my iPhone’s pedometer entirely, while using a third-party app to send my FitBit steps to my phone, then manually sync frequently throughout the day or Fantasy Hike will lag way behind. It’s a lot to deal with just so I can enjoy FantasyHike .

By

Awesome idea!

I am really loving FantasyHike but I agree with others that there is just no way to keep up with Mr. Underhill. I would love to be able to enjoy the journey with him side by side or even be able to meet up with him at various points along the way. I know it would not be true to the storyline if he had to wait for days/weeks for my slow pace but it would still be fun. If the creator ever wants to expand on the experience - maybe be able to create yourself as a character???? But all in all - fun little app!

By

Love it!

It's a really pretty app with some great features. You have updates on where you are on the map as you walk, and there are trophies/milestones for special locations. Highly recommend the paid version so you can record more than a mile a day! I feel like it's totally worth it, and I like being able to support the person who created FantasyHike!

By

Great app…but I have a suggestion!

I really love the concept of FantasyHike! But I would really like it if there were different difficulty levels that could be selected. There is no way in heck I will ever end up walking 20-25 miles per day, meaning I will never keep pace or get ahead of Mr. Underhill. The difficulty levels could be tied to set goals. Like maybe the easy setting have Mr. Underhill move 2-5 miles per day, and so on. Something like that would make FantasyHike more personalized to each user.

By

Great app, but just one thing could be better

I found FantasyHike, and immediately loved the idea, and everything about it. The layout is perfect, I love how it compares me to Frodo, but I wish the cost to have unlimited miles was cheaper, or we were given more miles (maybe 1-2) if we hadn’t upgraded. I’d definitely buy it if it were $1-$2, and I’m still probably going to get it now, just $4 seems a little much for tracking distance, even when it’s this cool.

By

Cool app but somewhat demotivating

I love the basic premise of FantasyHike and all the beautiful graphics! It’s fun to take my phone with me when I walk and track my progress to Mt Doom (called Mt Fire in FantasyHike ).

There are only two issues I have with FantasyHike. One, Mr. Underhill is relentless! He walks something like 20-25 miles a day! There is no way I can catch up to him and I find that somewhat demotivating. Wish there was an update where Mr. Underhill’s progress was only about 3-5 miles more than your own so you’d be motivated to catch up to him.

Second, what does “Second Breakfasts” and the other categories at the bottom mean?! Seems like other reviewers can’t figure it out either. Please explain this in FantasyHike ’s description.

Otherwise, it’s a fun app and I paid $4 for the premium version right away.

By

A fun way to keep moving!

I came across FantasyHike on Reddit and decided to give it a try. I soon upgraded to the premium version because it is so much fun! I’m pretty active, so while I wasn’t necessarily looking to increase my distance walked per day, it’s definitely keeping me accountable and I’m trying to make progress on my quest and catch up to Mr. Underhill! I’m really enjoying this fun way to keep me going.

By

Great app!

I’ve loved FantasyHike! The *only* issue I have is the speed mr underhill moves, even if you walk more than the average distance per day mr underhill doesn’t slow down, Hes *insanely* hard to keep any pace with, even if you lead a really active lifestyle, only chance you’re keeping up with him is if you’re getting an 8 mile run in every day ontop of your normal walking

By

So much fun!

My friends and I started FantasyHike together last year and we’re racing to finish. I just finished my 1780 mile journey 301 days later! My goal was to finish in under a year and I’m really happy I hit my goal.

FantasyHike was extremely motivating, I wish there were more campaigns! Looking forward to doing it again with new friends

By

Really simple concept but highly motivating

FantasyHike is practically useless without the premium update (around 3-4 dollars) but with the update, it tracks your daily walking and you can see yourself moving along the path to Mordor. The design is really scenic and it’s been motivating me to get out and run/walk so I’ve been really liking it so far!

By

Nerdy boyfriend got me into it but I still love it!

I’m not a LotR fan myself but my boyfriend was having a blast with FantasyHike so I got into it myself. I’m having such a fun time going on the journey even without a lot of context (although my bf is happy to explain to me what the parallels are). Everyone I’ve shown FantasyHike to have thought the unlicensed, copyright free names of people and places were hilarious… I mean, Hairyfoot Potter?! Alice Wonderfoot?! How can you go wrong!!

I do wish you could challenge other real life people and have them show up on your map. I emailed the dev team about it and they promptly replied that they have that option as a goal, but that they’re a small team so they aren’t sure when it’ll be available. But I’m not predicted to finish my journey for like 18 more months so they’ve got time!! And after that I’m sure I’ll start it over. I will say, the paid version is pretty necessary if you want to get anywhere but I don’t mind giving a one time payment of three bucks to support such an awesome app.

Also I went to graphic design school and I really appreciate how simply yet functionally FantasyHike is laid out, and the achievement art is GORGEOUS! Huge shout out to the design and art teams!!!!

Great fun

Huge fan of TLotR here and I have to say this is amazing. I’m completely fine with them not giving the rights to Middle Earth (or just doing it for fun itself) because you can definitely tell where along the journey of “The Ring” you are. Clever little plays on names keep you up to date on where you are, along with little explanations of what’s going on around you makes it a lot of fun. The names of the people that you are “racing” to the mountain (not sure what it’s called in this version but I can only imagine it’s going to be great!) are a lot of fun too. Definitely caters to however active you are/want to be. Right now I’m racing “Jon Snowflake” 😝. It’s just the little things that make it the most fun! It’s definitely keeping me in the walking mindset because I don’t want him to be there before I am (right now I’m about 4.22 miles ahead of him after 95 days and 386 miles, the perfect pace for me to keep it fun to stay ahead)! Seriously though, if you want to make it fun to walk, it’s definitely worth putting the few dollars down (what, one beer? Mountain Dew? Whatever’s a good comparison!) to keep you up and being part of an epic tale!

Beautifully Designed, Well Worth the One Time Payment

FantasyHike is absolutely worth the $3 or $4 (I don't remember, but the dollar makes no difference. Especially since it's a one time charge!). The illustrations are so pretty, and I love the narrative that goes along with it. If dopamine helps you stay motivated, this is the walking app for you. I have increased my daily steps by about 150%!!! I used to walk an average of 2-4 miles a day, now it's 4-7 miles a day. The passion, energy, and creativity of FantasyHike developer shines brightly through their work. I hope that there is another quest after I arrive at Mount Fire! I don't want it to end in a year. My ONLY complaint is that every single one of my friends I've shown FantasyHike to has immediately downloaded it and loves it, BUT we can't challenge each other! If that ever is ever added as a feature, FantasyHike will be PERFECT.

So much fun

I have been using FantasyHike for almost 3 months. I don’t have an Apple Watch so I never knew how much I was walking throughout the day. As someone who hates exercise but loves lotr, FantasyHike motivated me to get enough steps in to move on to the caption at the bottom of the screen. I love to share FantasyHike with my friends and family because it’s actually really fun. Seeing my little hobbit character move across the screen and reviewing the trek I’ve made makes me want to keep going until I can get rid of the ring. I check FantasyHike everyday and I am constantly trying to beat my previous record. It’s also insanely accurate to the books which is fun to recall. It gives you a irl glimpse into what the fellowship went through in their long journey. If you like the lord of rings at all, I highly recommend that you get FantasyHike.

So So Lovely

So delightful ! Just a really fun way to think about moving my body and exploring the world around me that isn't so "get my steps in." The artwork is beautiful, I love feeling like I'm following in the steps of the book/on my own adventure, everything runs really smoothly, and there's always something new to get excited about even if I just end up moving a mile in a day, while also feeling real-life challenging: sometimes you just have to get past a bigass field haha. Totally in love with it, what a charming, valuable thing. The only thing I wish it included was a way to add friends! I'd love to be able to congratulate each other in-app on getting to x point, or talk about "Old Tom" and his unnamed-for-copyright-reasons wife haha.

A lot of fun, it’s just missing someone

I downloaded FantasyHike to try to get me out of the house more, and even though I’m currently set to reach mount fire sometime in 2028, I’m still having fun with it! The only thing I think is missing is that we don’t have any companions. I want a Samwise on the trip with me! He doesn’t have to do anything, I just feel bad every time I look at the screen and see the outline of my little guy walking alone. The original trek only succeeded because Frodo had friends, after all. I’d also love to see what gloriously off-brand name you guys would come up with for him. I love getting notifications and seeing where I’m headed as I walk though. Thanks for the fun app!

486 Days to Mount Fire

At last, the ring, along with the “wrecked creature”, have been destroyed in the flames of Mount Fire! Sheesh… that’s the last time I accept jewelry from a grizzled old man in a robe….

I started FantasyHike on a whim and was delighted by the gorgeous graphics and Second Breakfast calculations. But to be honest, racing “Mr. Underhill” was quickly demoralizing; our diminutive chap was making more miles in a day than I sometimes might make in a week. I’ll grant that this was simply true(r) to the story, but I wished I had some more leisurely hairy-footed heroes to keep pace with. The addition of slower halflings definitely made me feel like less of a tree-person. Thanks to the developer for adding this ego-gentle feature. ;)

By

Epic ! Bravo !

This novel idea of going on journeys that you have read about or seen in the movies to encourage activity simply delights me ! The imagination ignites real life physical motivation especially for those of us who do sit and read or play games and find the world somewhat boring. A walk to the store for me was also me leaving the shire on a Grand adventure. Expand on this please ! This is truly something that creates a spark inside of me to be more active . Not for everyone, but there are many like me that making our daily routines part of a storybook that gets us further as we literally go the distance is nothing short of a standing ovation !

By

So True to the Books!

I’ve walked 60 miles so far with FantasyHike and I am just delighted with how it highlights all the events that the hobbits have along the way. It includes details the movie completely leaves out so it’s very refreshing to feel like I’m actually walking in real time along with them! I didn’t know it would be following the book so closely when I got it, but I love that it includes their meeting with Gildor and even the little details like when it starts raining or when they hear the Black Rider’s cry. It’s just so magnificent and delightful. The scrolling silhouette art is also just so aesthetic, I love it! :D

By

Not the best but it gets me moving

Cute app. The best part is that I don’t have to log or do anything. It automatically updates my miles from my fitness watch. I enjoy checking the narrative updates, though it is nothing exciting so far. What really motivates me is seeing my estimated end date. 2025?? That got me moving until I could get it to 2024 lol now I’m working to get it to 2023, this year. I also like seeing the pretend competitors progress. Recommendation: explain FantasyHike . There are things I don’t understand like the hobbit meal counts. Are those times I started my activity later in the day? It was worth the one time $3.99 fee but I would never pay monthly for it.

By

Great motivator! Wish it worked with other fitness apps though

FantasyHike has been a great motivator to get up and moving, plus who doesn’t like to pretend they’re on a quest?

The only improvement I hope to see in future releases is comparability with other fitness tracking apps. I primarily use Garmin (since I have a Garmin watch) so a lot of the runs or hikes I do don’t transfer over unless I find a way to translate the data between apps. Maybe I’m overlooking a feature of FantasyHike ? Either way, as a method of passively tracking your movement this has been such a fun and easy way to get up and motivate myself to increase my steps throughout the day.

By

Great idea, questionable price

FantasyHike is a fantastic idea to get people motivated to get moving. I love that you can select a character that matches your pace and that it also brings on a narrative. What keeps me from giving it five stars though is the $3.99 price tag to simply..track more steps? The max for free as far as I can see is 1 mile a day. The iPhone already tracks my steps for free, I don’t see why I need to spend $4 to have a feature implemented that’s already in my phone to begin with. I’d maybe pay if it was $1 just so I’d be able to keep up with the character you’re “racing” with but personally I don’t really mind if they’re ahead of me or not.

By

Going to try the upgrade

I started this quest about a week ago, and using the free version, was only allowed to travel 1 mile per day. I was told my journey would end sometime in 2027. So the inexpensive upgrade seems worthwhile and I may revisit this review after using it. I’m a huge LotR fan and appreciate the work that went into the graphics, but the first 7 miles revealed little of interest. My tiny character is trekking over a landscape that so far is mostly unchanging.
I wish I could enlarge areas of the map to see what’s ahead. I hope that with the ability to log more travel, I can reduce Jon Snowflake’s 29 mile lead. Hoping for more interesting things down the road. Thanks to the developers.

By

Exactly what I’ve been looking for!

I have been listening to the Fellowship audiobook while walking and was always curious if I could walk the distance to Mordor and FantasyHike is exactly what I needed! $4 purchase to do more than a mile a day was an easy yes for me.

Seems new so I’m sure features will be added, but I would love to be able to add friends as “challengers” like Mr Underhill to compare distance. I would also love to have a more interactive map that I can zoom in and click on places and see how far away I am.

Can’t wait to see FantasyHike get more downloads, thank you for such a fun app!

By

Awesome experience - beautiful artwork - worth it

FantasyHike is counter-cultural to today’s instant gratification mindset and in that it is a profound call to remember there IS another way. Without the blessing/dollars/license from the Tolkien estate it is still a wonderful experience. Some of the alternative names are hilarious and the absence of Samwise is felt but this is less a recreation and more an inspired expression of Frodo and Sam’s journey. Well done!

I’m 1475 miles into it and I’m still bufuddled by Mr. Underhill’s role - is he just to get me to go farther faster?!? Grateful that you can turn that option off, though I’ve left it on hoping that there is some story connection there, but nothing so far. Would love to see a ‘prequel’ version as well!

By

Outstanding app!

This has made my walks, runs, and interval training so much more fun and enjoyable!! Competing with another character is really cool, and so is doing it solo. Right now I’m doing it solo, but I think once I get more in shape I’m going to do it again once I complete it. It’s definitely worth a download.

PS: if you’re going to be walking on a treadmill, it will not detect that you’re walking since you’re staying in one place. Just simply add your mileage to the health app on your phone and if you’ve allowed FantasyHike permissions, it should just transfer right over. They mention it on FantasyHike :)

Amazing work on this!!!

By

Love this app

This has been a really motivating and positive way for me to track how much I walk around without focusing on it in an unhealthy manner. Because you’re not setting daily goals or anything like that it’s easy to forget about it, and just get happy notifications when you make progress. I’ve walked 145 miles since getting my dog about 3 months ago, and that’s so much more gratifying to me than saying we go on a walk twice a day. I love the idea of a quest/journey. Absolutely love it and recommend it to anyone who wants to track their walking without focusing on calories

By

Obsessed

Love FantasyHike so much!! I’ve had it for a few months now and it’s definitely motivated me to move more. Only a couple suggestions. The first is that sometimes it’s frustrating how little the landscape moves with every mile you walk so it would be cool to maybe incorporate more movement of the hobbit as I move more. Also it would be super sick to see all the characters with Frodo as he journeys: at the beginning leaving the shire we could see him with Sam, Merry, and Pippin, and when he meets the fellowship we could see him journey with them. Later on he would be with Sam and Gollum, etc. Regardless, if you love LOTR and want some motivation to move more this is FantasyHike for you.

Incredible

I love the concept of it, I love the story it tells, I love that you can challenge different people of a different pace and see how they all do (I do wish there were more options) however I do wish I could rate it less stars so the developers could see this because I wish they would partner with a wallpaper/lock screen so my view of my guy walking could be set to always display and I didn’t have to move my guy back to see the cool scene changes as I progress through the terrain. That’s just a bonus I would like, everything about FantasyHike itself I love so I can’t bring myself to rate it less than 5 stars, honestly the best exercise app I have found because it makes me want to compete with the travelers in a way I enjoy rather than just for no reason other than competition

By

One of these Challengers is not like the Others

I just got started, 4 days in. I really like the easy navigation of FantasyHike and the art style. My one complaint is that Mr. Underhill (your challenger) is springing all day such that he is about 60 miles ahead of me. I had to change to John Snowflake to feel like I’m actually competing. Only reason I could see challenging Mr. Underhill us if you do a marathon every day, and that’s just not realistic. Overall, highly recommend! Just wish I could race one of my favorite fantasy characters on more equal footing.

Edit: Finished on Jan 12! If you’re just starting, don’t let Mr. Underhill get you down. Great app that helped me with my New Year’s Resolution last year.

Gorgeous app

I love FantasyHike. I'm delighted that it follows the books - closely enough that I found exactly where I am in The Fellowship. It keeps me excited every day to see how far I've gotten, and looking forward to when I'll come up to the next event I remember. (Elves in the woods of the Shire!)

Since not all my exercise is walking, I'm glad there's a work-around for manually entering distances: give FantasyHike access to Apple Health's 'Walking & Running Distance' and add data manually there. Sometimes, I use a converter to estimate how long a walk lifting weights or doing yoga would be equivalent to. It's an extra step, but not a difficult one.

The only tiny nit I can think of is that currently, the daytime sky seems more like dusk. This is so small that it hardly even seems worth mentioning, because the artwork is beautiful, both the main progress screen and the achievements.

I was very pleased to be able to try it out for free (up to a mile a day can be tracked) and found it well worth paying for the upgrade.

Overjoyed with v2 friends features

Lucky me! I finished my original quest 3 days ago and updated FantasyHike to v2, to be immediately rewarded with the new “sharing with friends” features. What a bonus!! As someone who regularly sends screenshots to friends and pesters them, “Where are you at now???”, this is something I’ve been waiting for for so long! It felt amazing to get to Mount Doom AND then be able to start over again immediately with my buddies.

To everyone who’s complaining about the pricing: it’s $15 a year for the friends features, hardly a wallet smasher, and if you prepaid $4 like me ages ago, you keep your unlimited distance. So use FantasyHike as you’ve always used it or pay to get the new sharing, no biggie. I for one feel like $15/year is great value for adding friendly competition to my quest.

To the developer: in v3 can we have a version where we finish the rest of the story? Get picked up by an eagle (flying mile bonus), see Aragorn crowned in Gondor, clear the Shire (riding mile bonus), and go to the Gray Havens? I’d pay more for that. Not too much more 😅, but more for sure. Thank you!!

Was 4 stars, if you could just buy the new features 5 stars

I bought FantasyHike before the latest update and FantasyHike was solid but still missing a few things. The new update brings a lot of good things (share with friends) but now it is a subscription. I am all for paying for the new features but just let me buy the features. I also don’t know if I will be able to keep the unlimited steps that I already bought. If things change I will gladly change to 5 stars because I want FantasyHike to succeed but really don’t want to pay a subscription just to use an app that is not that mind blowing, just cool.

Edit: I do get to keep my unlimited steps, very relived about that. Also if anyone is complaining about having to buy unlimited steps is crazy that app is at least worth that. My gripe is with not owning anything and having to sub.

Highly Recommend

App is highly motivating to get steps in. I started in December and haven’t walked this much since before Covid. FantasyHike offers a cute background to navigate with notes about where you’re at on your journey and I love to see the landscape change as I walk. some sections take longer to walk through than others and I’ve found myself walking more to get to the next area especially if I can see it at the edge of my screen. I also love that there are 4 character options to pace yourself/compete with. I started with hairyfoot potter and was able to pass him and am now chasing down alice wonderfoot.
I also encourage you to go ahead and purchase FantasyHike rather than doing the free version so you can collect all of your steps. The day I bought FantasyHike I decided I was going to stop being sedentary and I believe FantasyHike provided the right motivation to keep me moving.

More Fun Than Viewing Steps in a Health App

Very well done app that’s entertaining and motivating, without that feeling like the purpose.
My friend and I go on regular walks and we’re both fans of the LOTR, Harry Potter, and literature generally. It’s been fun to see our relative progress along the map of Middle Earth, with illustrations sent as each new milestone is met.
Last year she had begun first, with my getting FantasyHike a couple of months later, so we were out of sync. We’ll both reset the journey for another year of walking soon and see if we can challenge Mr. Underhill!
I’d love it if a new adventure or two were added. I’m sure they’re working on that, and it may be why they’ve added a premium paid option, to help finance such development. That’s something I’ll be doing, as I easily get enough use from FantasyHike to justify it.
Whether using with someone else or independently, FantasyHike is thoughtful and well executed. Highly recommended!

Non-Interactive Non-Reponsive

I purchased FantasyHike with unlimited daily mileage and family connectivity. A month later the family activity part disappeared and became a subscription based thing. I don’t mind paying reasonable prices for things but they have to give in return and work. $25 seems a little steep for an annual subscription that gives you only a few more avatars to hike with (I assume that is what is meant by avatars) and family connectivity through Apple. That said I would still pay it because I was and still am enjoying sharing this with my daughter. I did actually sign back up for the family plan trial but FantasyHike failed to work, I was not granted anymore avatars nor was I reconnected with my daughter. We could see each other but only where we left off on 3/1 when this became a pay for service. I contacted the developer several times with absolutely no response so in the end I canceled the Family trial because I did not wish to pay for nothing more. I suppose I could reinstall FantasyHike but I have no idea if that wipes out my progress or reconnects me with my daughter. The unlimited daily mileage is worth the one time purchase, the subscription is useless as you get nothing for it.

Fun idea- needs a bit of bolstering

I’ve used FantasyHike now for 700 miles of the Mount Fire Quest. Initially, it was quite reinforcing by giving the user (me) achievements and consistent movement along the fantasy landscape. The further one goes though, the more the whole thing slows down. The story fades, it takes longer for the scenery to move, and it’s been over 200 miles of walking for me now with no new achievements. I wrote to the developers about 400 miles ago and they told me to hang in there because it does get exciting again. Other than a moment with a fox and some crows flying by…well, it’s becoming quite mundane.

The price is reasonable as a one time payment. But if you are someone who needs consistent reinforcement to keep you motivated, FantasyHike won’t provide it consistently. Lovely idea though and has so much potential.
