I purchased the Nix 2 as a gift for my wife. She was the color coordinator in our household. I thought this might be a useful and fun tool. She never used it.... Today I needed to determine a match color for a ceiling repair at one of our homes. I decided to try and use the Nix to determine a match. I cannot authoritatively determine if the scanner is accurate but I can say the Nix Utility software is useless and unintuitive. Despite knowing the paint brand we use (Sherwin Williams), I was provided at least a dozen choices based on my scan. Useless! On balance, this was a wasted $100 "stocking stuffer." I may try this one more time on an exterior project. If I glean any useful information from the second effort, I will update my rating and review. At this point, Buyer Beware.....
My heart sinks when I have to use NixToolkit. Not only is the UX and workflow horrible but the libraries of vendor colors don’t match when Lowes and Home Depot have for those brands-Valspar and Sherwin-Williams and Glidden. For example, I got a good match on a Valspar color but the paint associate searched four systems for the paint name with no success by name or number.
I’m better off cutting a piece out of the wall and taking it in.
Going to see if I can turn the device, Nix Mini 3.
Resets the settings if I disconnect the device, or even if I just lock my phone.
Too many button presses just to measure and save one sample.
Why do I have to be logged in to do anything?
Used this a few times and was happy but when I went to use it again the battery was dead and would not charge. Big waste of money!
Nix needs to use a solid, proven mobile app developer. NixToolkit’s user flow is non-existent. Just one frustrating example, of many, try creating a library, add a color to it then go back to reference… good luck. This is indicative of NixToolkit ’s poor UI.
The only useful feature over the other apps are the multiple scans to average the color. This really should just be the default mode
NixToolkit won’t find a match across all brands just the closet color for a given brand.
Creating a custom library is needlessly locked down to the more expensive scanners.
The NIX mini 3 is very poor quality, clunky case and can’t even match the included card even though it passes calibration with NixToolkit.
Really difficult to use. Saving and accessing collections could be easier. It is also crazy that there is no landscape support for iPads NixToolkit is always 90 degrees wrong. Such an easy fix. I can’t find any way to calibrate the sensor. Zero instructions and no links either.
Hate this new app. Too complicated and too many buttons just to do a paint color match! Also hate that you can’t scan a paint color and have it show you multiple different brands color matches at the same time, you have to go to the settings and change them if you want to see a a different brand, and can’t select to see multiple like the old Nix paints app!
Bought a Spectro2. It is a pretty accurate colorimeter but it’s almost useless because NixToolkit is so bad. Libraries don’t work reliably. The only known way I’ve found to save a measurement is to email it to myself and do the analysis using Excel. Tried to subscribe to Pantone library, NixToolkit took my money but won’t provide access. Is say they are scamming me, but I don’t think they are skilled enough. So disappointing.
Just like other reviewers, this is basically a worthless app. I never experienced the old one, but I’ve been using this more or less successfully for a few weeks now and was almost getting comfortable with its many failings including needing to re-pair my scanner with my phone virtually every time I used it and the relatively large number of button-presses required to get it to scan again, and its cumbersome and unintelligible system for remembering colors.
Now today the dang app won’t even boot up, just constantly “downloading paints database .” And this is with the latest update. Terrible.
I got the Nix Mini 3 for Christmas. I was super stoked to be able to use this. I cannot sign up for an account on either NixToolkit or the website because the birthday fields don’t work. I cannot get email support because I filled out the form and the last field just says “undefined”. I can’t call them because in order to do so, you have to fill out a form, that doesn’t work. So this is getting returned. What’s the point?
It seemed like a good idea 🥺
But the sensor is just too small and NixToolkit constantly loses the paint library’s
You’d probably have more accurate results with a magic 8 ball. 😜
This is nice app with a poor user interface. Once you figure out how it does things, it’s good, but the learning curve is steep because it does not follow iOS UI conventions at all. It’s like a PC app from the 1980’s.
Nix, give the UI a complete overhaul, and this time, make it easier to figure out how to scan for color values, how to match to a paint brand, and how to save and export both types of data. Then you’d have a real winner. Right now, I’d hesitate to recommend the Nix Mini to my friends.
Bought this as a gift for someone else, tested it out beforehand after seeing so many negative reviews for NixToolkit . Haven’t run into any major issues like other reviewers have. Device works as advertised but app UI could be better. If you run into issues, reinstalling could help.
I suspect the one star review was from a much earlier version of NixToolkit . NIX seems to have worked out the glitches they talked about.
You can literally scan color after color with a single click in NixToolkit . I analyzed 16 paint swatches in less than 5 minutes. Easy.
This was well worth the $.
The only reason I gave it a 4 star instead of a 5 star is because I’m not sure how accurate the hex codes are. If you move the sensor around on the swatch, depending on how good the light is, you can get different hex codes for the same color. So you just need to use your best judgment to make sure you have a close match. I’d call it 90% accurate though. Darker colors are harder I think.
I use the NIX to match colors when painting over graffiti. It works great, easy to use and color matches are very close considering the paint being covered may be old, dusty, etc. So much easier to scan, order and paint!
Whatever update they just released works with my Nix Pro 2. Insane it took them this long to fix but it’s all good now.
I don’t get the bad reviews. Maybe they were from an older version of NixToolkit , but I don’t mind NixToolkit , and have had no issues.
I’m an artist, traditional and digital. I have the Nix Mini 3.
I had no issues pairing, and no issues scanning to get the right color.
I use the single scan to get the HEX codes along with the image of the hue and value. It’s an incredibly useful tool when I want to color match reference images to ensure I get a decent match with the paint I’m mixing or the colored pencil I’m choosing.
This worked perfectly for me, and did just what I expected. I charged the device, downloaded NixToolkit , did not create an account. I was able to scan a spot on a newly-acquired painting and get the perfect paint color recommendations from the favorite brands I chose. A worthwhile investment to ensure I paint this huge accent wall the exact color I want.
Great general color checking app. I use it with a Nix Spectro 2 to compare colors.
