Heartline Study Reviews

Published by on 2024-06-17

🏷️ About: Heartline is a virtual research study that aims to explore how everyday technology like the iPhone and Apple Watch can enable earlier detection of atrial fibrillation (AFib), a leading cause of stroke. The study is open to people aged 65 and above, with or without an existing AFib diagnosis, who are residents of the United States and have Medicare coverage. By participating in the study, users can gain valuable insights into heart health, earn rewards, and advance heart health research for themselves and future generations.

Just Trying It Out

2022-05-22

Ok I saw the article on HeartlineStudy & the possible i watch @ $49
I have a iwatch 3, but not sure about putting it on the watch if I don’t qualify for the upgrade to the current model
What if I don’t qualify ??
I tried calling the number, but spent 2 minutes on hold without anyone answering
I wanted to get my question answered before I put HeartlineStudy on my watch
I’ve still not gotten an account completed I would guess due to not putting HeartlineStudy on my watch ??
I have gotten to the opening part where it tells me there is a iwatch detected and I need to put HeartlineStudy on the watch then come back to the page
Kindly fill me in on things
I had a Fitbit Versa & enjoyed it, but Fitbit watches seem to only last a year or 2 then they die
Mine did after 2 years, but I got it on facebook market place cheaper then regular cost
The owner was a kid & he didn’t like it do he sold it
I really liked the sleep tracker cause it gave me some insight into how my sleep was going
It really opened my 👀s on what happens in my sleep
But the iwatch 3 I also got on facebook market place doesn’t include the sleep tracker so I miss out on my sleep data
So now I find this, but not sure I want to put HeartlineStudy on both devices then not qualify & HeartlineStudy has to be deleted

Prefer Fitbit

2022-06-23

I got the Apple Watch for the heartline study after using the versa Fitbit for over a year. Because of balance and pain issues, the only exercise I can do is aquacise. The Fitbit has great graphs for my workout, showing how much time is peak cardio, fat burning and below zone. I can also look at the face and see the steps I have done. I was unable to get the face added to my Apple Watch, a flower that blooms as I get more steps in. I can’t find any of these things on the heartline app.
Another thing I can’t find is a sleep graph. I used to be able to see a graph that showed REM, deep and light sleep plus periods where I woke up. So far, I can’t find these things on HeartlineStudy. Perhaps as I wear it more, I will discover more features. But for now I am disappointed. The only added plus I can see is the ability to take an actual ECG.

Not built for scale

2022-07-24

This is a preliminary review because it has so far taken hours to sign up... I will edit later if star rating improves with use... when I get that far! The story to date:
Way too much redundant legal statements to read and agree. Then the Step 1 / Step 2 as explained in Heartline app to link Medicare with app are contradicted by what actually happens (Original Medicare + Supplement Plan G gets recognized and treated as Medicare Advantage). Basic misunderstanding of Original Medicare w/ Supplement vs Medicare Advantage. Then, the server went down. Then, support took 30mins to answer. Then at final stage, got HeartlineStudy msg: “Failed to set up app, please check your internet connection and try again” (no prob with my internet, so I guess app server overloaded). I do hope the security is working better than everything else so far! This trial seems like a great idea, but I wish HeartlineStudy and signup process were better tested before go-live.

Easy to use with snippets of heart-healthy information

2022-08-25

I saw the ad for the study HeartlineStudy is used for in AARP Magazine. It mentioned the possibility of getting a subsidized iWatch for taking part. I thought the study might be useful anyway and if I got the watch that would be a bonus. By signing up you get weekly (more or less) emails or notices on HeartlineStudy that link to brief but generally informative notices. By reading through those you accumulate points that translate into $$. I happened to also get selected for the iWatch pool so was able to buy the larger watch for $79 plus tax I think about 70% of those registering can opt into the iWatch pool but there is no guarantee until you sign up. You also have to have original Medicare. Some Advantage plans may join in the study but I’m not sure about that. The study will last approximately 2 years and you need to agree to be in it for that period. BTW, you need an iPhone for the watch to pair to.

The information they send is fairly basic so far (a month into the study) but is quick to go through. If you read through their legal information you will see that they strip personally identifying information from any data they collect before sending it along for analysis. Since Apple is a partner in this study I felt my info would be fairly secure but you will have to make that determination for yourself. Hopefully the information they gather will be if use so I’m happy to have signed up.

Love the study and my new watch. Here’s a suggestion

2022-09-26

Would never have gotten an Apple Watch if it weren’t for the study and now I can’t live without it. I feel this is making me more fit. Had no idea that my daily walk was inadequate before this. One suggestion is that Apple fitness plus include more workouts suitable to older people since so many of us are now in the study. I think this suggestion needs to go to Apple but I don’t know how to submit it to them. Any ideas? I am 76 and fit but have an injured hip and find even The easiest versions of the workouts impossible to do. Apple where do well to include things like chair yoga and workouts that don’t involve getting up and down off the floor or jumping

Heart line study

2022-10-27

I joined the Heart Line Study the end of February and have just completed 3 weeks. I love it. I had been very inactive since Covid and especially so this winter. I was feeling tired, lazy, and anxious for the first time in my life. My blood pressure was higher than it should be and the isolation and inactivity was troubling. I happened upon this study app and decided to give it a try. I wish I knew about it sooner as this would have helped me through this pandemic. It motivates you to move, breathe, stand up, and read health information. It is simple, motivating, and just what I needed. I’m starting to feel hopeful again and returning to the active person I have always been. Thank you for this program!

Just Starting

2022-11-28

I’m just starting the study, so it will be an initial review. Very easy to navigate through what they want you to do. I’m hoping besides participating in J&J’s study this will also increase my health awareness. The watch is VERY helpful in keeping track of my goals. More so than my Fitbit. But to be fair it’s also 4 times the price. But getting it free through the study is a great bonus and I am sure I will purchase it when the study is over. Hopefully I will be a part of something that will help enrich peoples lives both physically and and also mental health wise! It’s a good feeling! :) I’ll be the first to admit I have never been very good at sticking to any kind of health plan. But I have a good feeling about this!

Very informative

2022-12-29

As I was approaching 70 years of age, I felt I should do whatever I could to maintain or improve my health. A friend had told me about the Heartline program so I enrolled and got the Apple Watch for free! About 10 days after starting to use it, I was watching TV while relaxing on the couch. I heard a little noise from my watch and it told me that it had detected an irregular heartbeat. I was instructed to perform an ECG which told me that I was in a fib. It was a total surprise as I had no symptoms or past history. It then instructed me to consult my doctor and she sent me to get a heart monitor. I wore it for two weeks and to my surprise I had 25 episodes of a fib in that two weeks. Again, no symptoms to alert me that there was a problem. So then I had to have an echo cardio gram to check how my heart was functioning. Everything checked out fine in my heart so now I am on a blood thinner and a beta blocker. I’m so grateful to have learned this before a big problem presented itself. Now the Heartline app is sending me all kinds of good information to help me understand how to better care for myself. I can’t say enough good things about it. I talked my husband into joining the study as well and now we are both working hard to get our rings to close!

Excellent App

2023-01-30

I have learned so much relating to activity, moving, standing and the heart, even being a retired RN. HeartlineStudy has been an excellent motivator to exercise routinely. Even requiring a cane for assistance in ambulation I have been able initially to walk at least one half mile in each workout session due to HeartlineStudy ; the incentives are very encouraging to step up into a healthier lifestyle. Being 80 years old and living a low cardio lifestyle I realized my overall heart and brain health needed improvements and Heartline is doing that. I find myself being aware and watching for each hour to stand up and walk around for at least one minute every day. Using Heartline I am confident my overall health will improve.

This study and Apple Watch are life savers.

2023-03-03

I signed up for the study and was awakened one morning by a notice from my watch that I had been in A-fib during the night for over 2 hours. I was in touch with my cardiologist immediately and he was extremely impressed with this valuable instrument. I have a “loop monitor” implanted to check for AFIB but I have to send a report through a modem to the monitoring center who then notifies my cardiologist. I notified him before he got the report.
Last year when I traveled to Europe I had to take the modem and machine with me and send reports occasionally. Once international travel is again recommended, I will only bring my watch. I can send cardio reports to my Cardiologist from my iPhone .
Very impressive!

So Far So Good

2023-04-01

Covid has, as for many, changed my life dramatically. In December 2020 while enjoying retirement in Mexico I became ill with a respiratory infection. This has been a chronic issue since my lungs are weak from childhood polio. It advanced to Covid pneumonia and I was air evacuated to the states. In the ensuing 7 months I had 2 cardioversions and a catheter ablation due to arrhythmia and afib, fluid drained from my lungs, diagnosed with a boatload of heart, lung and kidney issues and too many hospital stays. I am 75 and wish to be as proactive with my health as possible and enjoy a good quality if life. This study has afforded me a new way to monitor my heart health and I am grateful. Very easy to enroll and have just started my Actions for the week. Thank you for this opportunity.

Concise and Complete

2023-05-03

Home is brilliantly colorful where you visualize the concept of the rings. Moving along allows you to see the points accumulated. The research tab provides lots of information about the study. Finally, the last focuses of the participant.
Now if only there was a tutorial on how to use your Apple Watch......A nice video on how to navigate the workout section. Thankfully AppleCare is there to help us but I believe it is your responsibility - they probably deserve 10,000 points for their time and effort.
When I recently had to perform an ECG, the instructions were right there. Heartline had my back! Now, if only it would remind me to log onto a workout! I know it will still capture my heart rate and movement but you don’t really know what I’m doing.

Off to a Good Start

2023-06-03

Signed up and was assigned to the watch group. The sign-up process was very thorough and easy to digest, though lengthy. The Heartline app is very intuitive and easy to use. I bought the watch with Heartline discount and had a weekend with the watch before starting watch-related Heartline activities on Monday - just enough time to get familiar with the health-related activities on the watch including the 3 rings, setting sleep goals, adding unplanned activities, stopping to breathe deeply, checking pulse and using EKG function. Monday rolled around and I have my first Heartline weekly goal. I am very much looking forward to participating. Like other reviews I have seen, I think it would be a plus to be able to see all Heartline articles, surveys, etc. on my iPad. Off to a great start!

Heartline review

2023-07-05

I’m pretty pleased with the apps. I take my blood pressure a couple times a day and record under “Vitals” along with body temp. I like seeing my sleep details and heart rate, ECG, blood oxygen levels.

The Stand challenge really motivates me to move around more. Rather than doing lots of physical work around the house/yard all in one hour, I now spread it out so I’m moving regularly every hour. This has helped my body stay more flexible and clearly reduces stiffness on humid days.

The walking/outdoor exercise app shows split time for miles walked, calories burned.
I wish it would immediately remind me during a walk with my dog when we stop, hit pause to restart again. A beep or vibration would be useful.

I like that I can create “Other” on it to log vacuuming, gardening, digging, raking, shooting baskets with my grandson.

Only thing that frustrates me is the flights climbed for stairs. I’m up and down my steps at least 10+ times a day. However, since stairs in my 1910 row house are only 13 or 14 stairs, I rarely get credit unless I swing my arm vigorously going up and pretend to keep climbing. Now at my age, I like keeping a hand on the stair railing going up or down. So I wish Heartline would recalibrate the number of steps per stair case climbed and let us tell you the number of stairs per staircase.

My husband and I are both on the program as a united effort to remain as healthy as we can. We are 76 and 73 respectively. We are goal oriented people so this program is great for us and we are usually trying to beat our daily goals. We are thankful for this great opportunity and are taking every advantage of it to keep our heart healthy and our general well-being as good as possible for our age. We feel better and we are finding this program has motivated us to eat better and to challenge ourselves daily to get out and move. This program also makes us feel more connected to our heart health. I am enjoying the new awareness to my overall health and how this new program has increased my joy of walking. I look forward to new research and health information as well as being involved in the new sleep study r esearch.

Heartline App

2023-09-06

I joined the Heartline Study after learning about the study on the Quest website, because my mother who had always been a vibrant person was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation in 1987 at the age of 65. At that time I had never heard of the term and didn’t understand the ramifications of the diagnosis. My mother and her physicians had a difficult time managing her a-fib. She subsequently had a number of TIA’s, developed dementia from the strokes, and died after a major stroke at the age of 78.

I have always had a fear of developing dementia, so this study is something that I take seriously. I am in the group who has an Apple Watch to use, and I have found the watch extremely useful in monitoring my health. The study itself is well done. It is not too time consuming to participate in. The activities in the study are motivating, and I am reminded to work on good health practices. I would recommend this study to anyone who is interested in improving his or her health.

I am wearing a watch!

2023-10-08

It has more than 50 years since I wore a watch. Dick Tracy never had it so good! The watch and the apps are easy to use and though I thought I would find the watch uncomfortable it is not. The initial setup was easy as I have been an iPhone user for more than 10 years and a Mac user for 32 years. Identifying the icons at first was an issue but that was quickly resolved as with any other questions I came up with, though I thought it was funny to call apps “complications.”

The directions are pretty clear as to what the study is asking. The activity circles are a constant reminder to be active. Set the face of the watch to show it. The Heartline messages/emails are clear, concise, and easy to read and understand. I just sent off a question about entering data in my profile yesterday is the only issue that I have had so far that has not been resolved by either looking at the Heartline app or the watch app.

Extremely Helpful Medical Tool

2023-11-08

HeartlineStudy is simple to use. It interacts with your Health app & Motion. It gives you a “challenge” every Monday to walk for 1 or 2 minutes every hour for 12 hours. Starts out just a few days a week & increases to 7. I’ve found that easy to do. It’s visual in your Health app & on your Apple Watch. You also earn points by reading the articles on a health topic as they are posted each Monday in the Heartline app. These points are worth money. I’ve had palpitations every great now & then for 12 years or so. The last 2 years the frequency & how long it lasts has increased. Spring of 2021 I found HeartlineStudy & the study. I signed up & got Apple 6 watch & discovered that these were episodes of atrial fibrillation lasting up to 1-1/2 hours. I showed my doctor the info on my iPhone and he sent me to cardiologist. They did a month long EKG which confirmed the atrial fibrillation & started me on Eliquis, a blood thinner, to help prevent strokes. All the other tests were ok. I return my doctor soon to find out what next. I highly recommend HeartlineStudy and joining the study as it may have saved my life and/or quality of life.

Making a Difference

2023-12-10

I learned about the Heartline Study from an AARP email. I have become more conscious of my health as I age but have not always engaged in the best practices. Prior to COVID 19 I had established an active schedule by joining a local senior center. I particularly enjoyed swimming and water aerobics. Unfortunately the center closed in March 2020 and still has not reopened. It was my thinking that the Heartline Study app would be a motivator and support for me to become more active. In addition my mother had heart issues and in later life was fitted with a pacemaker so I have always been concerned about my heart health. I do faithfully have my annual physicals as well as have the recommended periodic tests for an individual my age. Participation in the Heartline Study app enables me to become more knowledgeable of my health status and provides tools to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I am in the Apple Watch group which allows me to utilize technology to achieve health related goals. I chose to “borrow” the Apple Watch rather than purchase it which I have decided was a mistake. I had never owned an Apple Watch and did not realize how valuable it would be in achieving my health related goals.

Heartline-a game changer

2024-01-10

Just got into the study and learning how to use my Series 6 Apple Watch. I found the support from both the Heartline and Apple great as I had several questions. It is, to my surprise, somewhat enjoyable to get a reminder to “breath mindfully “with a clever GIF for timing. The EKG rhythm strip is of high quality and very easy to use. Integration of the various segments of the study is well done. It is minimally intrusive so far and I think a real game changer for patients with a family history of atrial fib or who just have extra heart beats, like myself, and want to monitor it at home.
So far, it fills my needs and Seems to be a well designed study. Also, you can withdraw from the study without any penalty.
I will write a followup review in about 6-8 weeks.
Highly recommended!

Be careful !!!

2024-12-18

I tried to apply for this study and they kicked me out of it because I didn’t meet their criteria. So I called the 877 number to find out why and they told me they couldn’t divulge why. I told them that the study was either a scam or a farce as far as I was concerned and they tried to assure me that it wasn’t. I am just disappointed with their actions and response !!!

Confused

2024-12-18

Aren’t you suppose to sign up for the study to get an Apple Watch? How in the world do you create an account without an Apple Watch? Great idea but terribly executed

Won’t install

2024-12-18

App does not install on AW5 whether I try to install from the watch app on my phone or HeartlineStudy Store on the watch itself. iPhone X running iOS 13.3.1.

Misleading

2024-12-18

The a-fib, Apple Watch special offer noted that an iPhone 6 or newer would be compatible with the a-fib app. After downloading HeartlineStudy a message said that I need an iPhone SE or newer in order to participate in the survey. Waste of time.

Equal Access?

2024-12-18

I don’t have iPhone but have iPad. iPad is more useful for me compare to iPhone. I am unable to speak to the phone. I am deaf. I very much want to be in this research. But I am unacceptable because I don’t have iPhone. That isn’t Equal Access to me.

A Deaf Person

Very disappointed

2024-12-18

Nice concept but forces you to get a new phone. Can get a watch for $49 but will have to spend hundreds to participate. I have 6 plus and required software but said phone not compatible. Starting to look like a marketing ploy for seniors to buy new phones.

Can’t participate due to Medicare Advantage program.

2024-12-18

Sad and disappointed.

Awful- many bugs and impossible to create an account

2024-12-18

This is NOT ready for prime time.... errors on HeartlineStudy itself and tech support was not able to help.

HeartlineStudy needs to be fixed so that interested people can try it. Right now, it is a bugfest and worthless. Cannot even create an account!!!

Deleting. Who the heck created this???

Won’t work on my iPhone

2024-12-18

Doubt that HeartlineStudy is well designed. Downloaded HeartlineStudy . Now it tells me my phone is too old. This is the only app I have had this happen with. Normally I can’t install an app that wasn’t compatible. So basically the developer need to work on it.

According to the details this should work on my 6s. And my software is current. Obviously this company has no business doing a heart study if it can’t handle a simple app.

Idiotic

2024-12-18

This is the craziest thing I have ever seen. I have a first generation Apple Watch. It does not allow downloading of HeartlineStudy. So I called to see what I could do to get the new $49 watch and become part of the study. They said I can’t become part of the study unless I have a newer watch or no Apple Watch. I said I would throw away my old watch since it will not allow me to do the study and does not track afib. If I had a newer watch I would not need another one. Throwing it away does not work either because you need a compatible watch to sign up in the first place. Absolutely crazy

Trojan horse

2024-12-18

This seems like ‘research’ as a bit of a Trojan horse for data aggregation. Check out this paragraph from the privacy policy in white below— makes me super uncomfortable to think Apple and JandJ can have all of my data for any purpose permitted by law— support of the study could be defined so broadly for these companies—sawing their using it to help their commercial products improve health would be grounds enough for stripping my name off the top of the data and having a heyday. Sharer beware!.

In addition, we may use and disclose information that is not in personally identifiable form for any purpose permitted by law and in support of the Study or as otherwise described in the Informed Consent Form.

Problematic

2024-12-18

App on iwatch won’t even open!!?!

Disappointed

2024-12-18

Giving only 4* because my Advantage Plan is not listed as a participant. I was excited about this program because I had a TIA 2 years ago and hopeful that this study would help warn me of either another one or a full blown stroke. I did sign up on the wait list so hopefully my provider will soon be a participant.

Disappointed

2024-12-18

Apparently you can’t have supplemental insurance. I’m on a waiting list.
For those experiencing problems delete app on your phone then reinstall it. You will be able to answer a few questions to see if you’re eligible.
I called support because I was stuck in a loop. Shut down watch. Shut down phone. Restarted both then deleted iPhone app and reinstalled.
Good luck Boomers 😁

Valuable Study

2024-12-18

HeartlineStudy downloaded quickly and the installation process went smoothly. The acceptance statement was long but I did get an email once registered that contained a pdf of the acceptance agreement. Having Medicare is a requirement.

HeartlineStudy appears to present a lot of information on the heart and cardiac issues. You get points for reading the material which can be cashed in as they accrue. There are apparently other ways to accumulate points. If you qualify you get a loaner Apple 5 watch for free or you can buy one at a reduced cost of $49...a great price.

Sounds like it will be an interesting study that hopefully will lead to helping people with cardiac issues.

I am a retired RN and really am happy to b part of this study. It is the future of preventative healthcare. I love being able to check my O2 sats, take my ECG and monitor my own vitals. I love the mindfulness and “stand” reminders. I am a very active senior and previously used a Garmin watch. I absolutely love my new Apple Watch and all of the monitoring and preventative health reminders and features. Thank you J&J, Apple and Best Buy.

I have gotten 17 Atrial Fibrillation notifications sense I started this program. I just finished having a 12 lead, stress test and echocardiogram done and they were all fine, 100%. Can you explain why I'm getting these alerts?

Anthony Grasso
2021-08-15

Other than my own occasional mix-up. (There have been instances when I forgot to put in my watch in the morning while hurrying off to an appointment.) these might lead to lower performance goal achievements. Is there a reporting mechanism to disallow incorrect data gathering?

Pattie
2021-07-31

In a research project, apples must be measured against apples….it appears that those disagreeing with the study don’t get that. Yes, you must have a phone that meets criteria, no, it doesn’t work with an IPad. You may not qualify for the study. Research design requires that certain criteria are met to be included so that the data is valid. There are no extra costs as one reviewer has stated. Geez. Read the program. Follow the instructions. It works fine. It may save your life or prevent a stroke!

2021-06-28

The Heartline Study is great. The app works exactly as it should and on all Apple phones from 6s and up. Many of the complaints here seem to be whining by folks who didn’t qualify, or who can’t follow simple instructions. I have had the app for over 3 months and it works flawlessly. In combination with Apple Fitness, this study has motivated me to exercise more and the results are measurable. Thank you Apple and J and J! I got a new Apple 6 watch (44mm) for $79. So far in the study, I have earned almost $40 by completing surveys, achieving very easy goals and by reading articles (yes you actually earn money by participating). I can quit the study at any time and keep the watch and earned money but why would I? The Heartline Study and app have helped to make me healthier and will ultimately be virtually free.

2021-06-06

I have had no problems with the study, with the watch or the app. I already had a new iPhone 12. I enrolled in the study and had a brand new Apple iwatch 6 the next day. The study and the app has some very useful features to keep track of my exercise, my sleep patterns and even a time to relax and breathe. A lot of people claim to be worried about the information being out there, but they need to realize it’s already out there!A lot of people don’t even realize how much information is on the magnetic strip on the back of their drivers license. I really can’t see Johnson & Johnson spending this type of money for a study that is only connected to business earnings. Maybe I’m just naïve but it seems to be fine with me!

The Heartline Study is more proof that Johnson & Johnson and Apple are World Class Organizations. Signing up took time and made it clear this was a serious medical endeavor with the "client's" care and rights fully in mind. It was also clear the legal Teams at these companies were important to their efforts. I have had computers for over 25 years and am very comfortable with "devices", but the Apple Watch is a new level of tiny tech available to everyone. It is amazing what it can do from such a small platform. The Heart part is with me every day with tips and prods. And I like to think it is working in the background to keep checking on me. Time will tell. Commercially for Apple, what I think they are really selling is the iPhone because the Watch cannot work without the phone. To me from what I have seen, these two Apple "devices" together make other phone models seem antiquated. And I'm sure this is just the beginning!

2021-04-15

Today, to my surprise I received a credit card statement for the cost of the Apple watch I ordered from Best Buy, per your instruction. Do I receive credit in full when I complete the study and return the watch to Heartline? It was never my intention to own this watch which cannot be returned to Best Buy. So far there has been no response to my previous emails to Heartline. I can only surmise this is a scam to sell Apple watches. If I don't receive a response soon, I'll reach out to the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General-Consumer Protection and notify my small circle of friends and family of the Heartline Study scam.

Study works fine. Many (if not most) of the reviews appear as whine and complaint that person was not accepted into the study, or could not operate the app. No comments on the validity of the research methods, which appear fine; e.g., randomized with large population. (I did not get a new Apple Watch free - no big deal, stop your whining.)

Katie Neal
2021-01-02

I totally disagree with the reviews posted. Both my spouse & I in the study. We had Apple XR’s, and the minimum req for phones were clear upfront. Bought 2 Apple 6 watches @ $49 thru the study discount code at BestBuy. I find the EKG, oxy blood %, heart rate. and actity goals extremely motivating. App works just fine, easy to install. What is not to like? Would recommend to anyone. Wearables are the future of healthcare self awareness. Don’t miss a terrific opportunity. It’s a study and there must be rules to develop a consistent outcome.
