Notifications not working on Samsung s23 Ultra when app is running. No message, voicemail or gmail notifications.

I have a pair of Skullcandy Crusher Evo that I connect to a Xiaomi 12X running android 12. Although the app finds my headphones, it refuses to connect and thus the app's features are unusable. I tried everything from following the in screen prompts to reseting the head phone.
