Companion App; room for improvement

Magic keeps a record of tournament gameplay only for a very brief period before erasing it (seemingly under 24 hours), and if you navigate away from the score page after a tournament is complete it is impossible to return to the page. I’d say Magic would be infinitely more valuable if you were able to access tournament records to track your progress and the progress of opponents who’d played in events with you over a long period of time, such as a few months or a year. I doubt the score charts take up much data, perhaps at the very least you’d be able to store them on your phone as a downloadable image or pdf. Instead I find myself copying scores down in notebooks and considering taking awkward screenshots to record the stats. Magic accomplishes it’s most minimal requirements to facilitate this app events but there is lots of room for improvement.

Worth the wait

Magic tracks a ton of things no other app I’ve seen tracks. It can track life, of course, but also tracks commander damage, poison counters, energy, commander tax, the amount of mana of each type in your mana pool, and even your storm count. Combine that with helping make tournament life easier, Magic is totally worth it. All that work they put it is much appreciated.

Janky

Most annoying feature in this is when I’m trying to look up cards click on a card and then try to back out to look at the next card it brings me to the very beginning of the search wow like I want to scroll through 100 cards again and it loads way too slow faster just to use a web browser without having to scroll through all the cards over and over and over again just so you can back out and look at the next card, Would be so much better too if it had a functional rulebook for the game where we can search for rules and keywords

App Has Ruined Website on Mobile

They seem to have updated the website for Gatherer to tell you “Gatherer works better in the Companion app!” on every gatherer page you visit on mobile, forcing you to choose Continue or Open App/Store. I opened Companion to go see how it connected…and there’s no where showing a way to use Gatherer in Magic . Please update Magic before making the website shill for it.

Needs work

1. Need a way to delete tournaments from the list.
2. Need a way to un-register from events.
3. 2HG just needs work. Ran into an issue where the client both recognized a team as a team, and said they weren’t on a team. The team could not be dissolved, as there is no option to do so, and the client could not dissolve a team. It just kept telling the players to dissolve the team and re-register, which was impossible.

Good until you need it.

Since tournaments have started back it seems like it can’t handle the load?

Constantly crashes and forces the TO to print and pair manually for the last 3 weeks in tournaments with less than 12 people. I just reinstalled it and if it works next week maybe I’ll adjust my rating.

Other features are good but you’re mainly interested in using it to sign up and get paired up, which is what it’s currently failing at.

Only one complaint

My only complaint would be to give us an option to delete or drop out from events. I would join an event, and leave for the night after the event, but the event would still be on my homepage and wouldn’t give me an option to delete the event.

Companion is terrible

The search engine for the card database is not user friendly. It is so case specific that if you miss on parameter that it cannot find anything. For the several cards I tried to look up general parameters it couldn’t find anything. The website is far easier to use. I will be removing Magic . And recommend that it not be used for card database searches. It’s really misleading, too difficult to use, and just bad design.

Settings seems busted

I’m not sure what to expect in settings, but a lengthy page of legal jargon is not it. I’m sure in time that will function fine, just for now at a glance it looks useless.

Otherwise logging in was painless. Other aspects work. I hope one day to see match history on there somewhere to notably add to app utility but otherwise it looks great!

Bugs!

Every time I tabbed out of the tournament as a host, the round timer reset! It was a huge conundrum last night because the timer reset twice during a control mirror!

Also results came back buggy. Kept saying we had draws in the bracket for 2-0 / 2-1 games. Personally think it was the player submitted games that gave me issues.

Gatherer

The gatherer app should hold your place while scrolling cards. If I close Magic it should open where I was last scrolling.

Add something new?

Magic is good to use and I like almost everything. The one thing I don’t like is the spacing between things in the gatherer. Other than that I think a feature to allow players to write down deck lists would be awesome.

By

Needs a deck building feature.

I understand card search is in beta, but I highly recommend creating a feature that lets players search and save cards into decks. That’s actually why I installed it, and Im disappointed to find that this feature is lacking.

Drop players from tournament?

I have tested out Magic for 24 hours and can not find a single way to drop players from a tournament. Other than this, Magic seems flawless. Will gladly change to a 5 star review if they add this feature.

New database is needing descriptions

This is especially an issue on transformative cards. I can’t see the backs or get a description/rulings on uses. Also I would like to be able to see all available arts for a card.

Glitches but good alternative

Glitches and sometimes even crashes, but a great alternatives for events to see who your opponent is. Would be nice to have some sort of history to see standings.

Good Start

Great start to Magic . Was wondering if the plan was still to add a card database (gatherer info I assume) as it was back in 2018. Or has the plan for companion changed from when it was gonna be called Portal and will only do what is currently in place?

Great All Around

One of the better / best life trackers available.
The card search functions just as well as the online version.
And it’s free.

Amazing!!

This has great potential for big events! Small events and even just at home this app playing!

Has the essentials, UI needs work

The life counter and tools for tournaments are pretty good and could definitely streamline the experience playing in-store if you only need this to get into an event. However, in the life tracker counters and other information is displayed on a separate page of your area, which does make the tracker look more clean, but also means you have to swipe back and forth to see and manage all the information. Also the UI, along with the look and feel of the entire app is pretty clunky and should be improved. The tabs and side menu just seem rushed and difficult to navigate. It has the potential to be a good tool, but isn't close to what it could be, and isn't great for the huge amount of time it took to develop. I would say 3.5 stars as it is upon first full release.

Good tool for any Magic Player

Finally a good official app to help with your games, both at home and at your favorite store!

By

No EDH event option

I wish there was an EDH option for events and put people in pods and then round two put winners in a pod and pod up the rest other then that it’s all a MTG player needs in one app

By

Let us change the background depending on deck color!

The title is the only issue I have with Magic . Otherwise it is a perfectly decent life tracker.

Great For Any Magic Fan

This is amazing if your a Veteran at the game or a Beginner. Provides easy score keeping during events or releases. 10/10

Needs commander damage as an option!

LGS started using this, only thing i’d like to see is the ability to track commander damage!
