About Virtual Vision Test

What is Virtual Vision Test? Virtual Vision Test by Warby Parker is an app that allows users to renew their glasses or contacts prescription from home using just their phone. The app guides users through a simple eligibility quiz and vision test, and an eye doctor assesses the results within 48 hours. If the doctor renews the prescription, the user is charged $15 for one renewed prescription or $25 for both. The app is not a comprehensive eye exam and is not meant to replace visits to an eye doctor.

Features

- Eligibility requirements: Users must be between 18 and 65 years old, have a single-vision distance Rx (not readers or progressives), have no eye health concerns or symptoms, and see well with their current glasses or contacts. Users must also not live in AK, DC, GA, ID, KY, NJ, NM, SC, SD, WA, or WV.

- Pricing: Users are only charged if their prescription can be renewed. If the doctor cannot renew the prescription and recommends an in-person, comprehensive eye exam, the user is not charged. If the prescription is renewed, the user is charged $15 for one renewed prescription or $25 for both.

- Vision test: The app guides users through a simple vision test that can be completed in a quiet, well-lit spot with about 10 feet of space. Users will need their glasses or contacts and their phone.

- Doctor assessment: An eye doctor assesses the user's results within 48 hours and determines if the prescription can be renewed.

- Not a comprehensive eye exam: The app is not meant to replace visits to an eye doctor for comprehensive eye exams. Users should follow the advice of their doctor and get their eye health examined periodically.

GREAT app - one suggestion

This is a fantastic app. It is easy and delightful to use and gave me a new prescription within 24 hours. This is especially wonderful because I needed a prescription update to get blue light glasses for working at home bc of Covid, and no place was open to get a prescription. Whole process took only half an hour!! The one small suggestion I have is for the last step. When you are supposed to choose your current glasses or upload a prescription, I chose my current Warby Parker distance frames which I had bought online using a distance prescription. VirtualVisionTest said these were ineligible, that only distance prescriptions were eligible. I was confused, and almost gave up because I thought that my vision was too bad for app ( I have terrible nearsightedness and astigmatism). But I thought I would try uploading my prescription (the same one as I used for the glasses) and see what happened. Luckily I got a prescription!! So perhaps change the “ineligible” message to something less confusing because I nearly dropped off. But this is a small thing!! Thank you developers, PMs, and other relevant stakeholders for a phenomenal product!! You have really made my life easier and better!!

Great experience!!

VirtualVisionTest is great if you are eligible to use it (the faq on their website can tell you if you’re eligible before you download).

I have an outdated prescription and have been wanting new frames but I know how pushy the eye doctor can be when you ask for your script and don’t buy glasses from them so I’ve been putting off going. When I read about VirtualVisionTest I was so intrigued!!

Overall this was such a smooth experience. I downloaded this yesterday, uploaded my old prescription, and took the exam all within a half an hour. By the end of the day I had a new prescription! Now time for new glasses!!

Straight forward, one suggestion

I took the test since I was eligible and it’s SO much more convenient than having to take half a day to go out, sit in a waiting room, get my eyes tested, wait another 30 minutes for results, etc. and with the cost of the test + gas… it’s a no from me. I’ve been wearing glasses for 5+ years and while my vision has changed a little bit, I can still efficiently see out of my 5 year old glasses. This is a GREAT option for me.

I knocked one star off because of uncertainty of accuracy. For the test you have to use your phone to swipe. For someone with small hands and big phone, this is pretty hard to do with one hand, since the other has to be used to cover your left or right eye. I feel like I may have missed a few circles on the test because of awkward hand swiping. If I moved my phone too much, I would have to recalibrate (which happened about 6 times during the process). One way I would try to solve this and maybe provide a directional keypad on the screen with the ability to zoom the keypad out to accommodate smaller hands.

Other than that, this company has thought of it all!

Great concept, TERRIBLE execution!

I downloaded VirtualVisionTest thinking that I could bypass going to an optometrist and spending almost $75 for an eye exam. VirtualVisionTest basically instructs you to go onto their website and sync your phone with your computer, so that you may use your phone as a remote during the test. Sounds awesome, right?! It then instructs you to stand 11 feet away from your computer. Easy! The problem comes into play when the test starts. During the first test, I noticed that there was a bit of lag between what I was doing on my phone and what was happening on my computer, which caused me to select some things erroneously. So, I started over and just took my time to make sure that I accounted for the lag. When the second test came up, I was instructed that it needed to recalibrate the distance between my phone and my computer, which were still the same. It did this over ten times. When it finally passed this point, and started the second test, the lag was even more apparent. It also would stop in the middle of the test and make me recalibrate, even though I didn’t not move an inch from where I was standing the whole time. So, I just gave up. I’ll be going to my eye doctor soon!

Easy App Experience, Had Problems with Rx but Customer Support Saved It

Let me preface this by saying this is my third review of this product. I received a prescription very quickly, and VirtualVisionTest is an incredibly smooth experience. I had a little trouble at first getting to the right distance to take the test, but once that was resolved it was very easy.

I did, however, have a problem on the backend. I received a prescription for the wrong product. I did have to go through quite a few loops (which took over a week) with customer service to get the issue resolved. It seems the problem was with the prescribing physician, not with Warby Parker. I am updating my review VirtualVisionTest to four stars, from one star.

This is thanks to an absolutely wonderful customer support manager who saved the day, and took care of my problem flawlessly (not sure if I can share her name here, but first initial J, thank you SO much!). Those extra stars are thanks to her!

This App Needs Glasses

I got thru the questionnaire fine and was trying to set up the distance. I pointed my iPhone at the checkerboard on my laptop, kept backing up per the directions, got to a certain distance and it said “we can’t detect your screen.” I got as far as 9.2 out of 11 which I assume means number of feet away. But I was standing next to the 15’ mark of the tape measure I had on the floor next to me and somehow VirtualVisionTest is still telling me I’m only at 9.2 (feet away) out of 11. Then it turns yellow and says “we can’t detect your screen”.

Yes, maybe because you had me back up so much, I’m now in Canada.

I shut off all the lights to avoid a glare. Same thing. I dimmed my laptop screen a bit. Same thing. I brightened my laptop screen a bit. Same thing. I took my iPhone case off. Same thing. I tried for 30 minutes to get it to stick. Nothing. Just me tripping over furniture in the dark. So now I need an orthopedic prescription, too.

Broken and useless

I've tried this thing three times and had the same error from up every time. It will say that the distance from my computer has changed (even though I haven't moved) and that it needs to reset the distance. Okay, fine, reset it then. Except it doesn't do anything from there. It just puts up a screen saying that it needs to reset the distance. No buttons to press, no instructions on how to reset the distance, and no ability to continue the tests. I kept tapping the screen trying to figure out how, exactly, one is supposed to reset the distance. Nothing happens, it just stays on that screen. The only thing you can do is to restart VirtualVisionTest and begin the entire process all over again. I did this three times before finally giving up.

Seems like a neat idea and the actual tests were easy enough to do, but VirtualVisionTest is completely useless until they fix this issue.

Super frustrating

It seems like a good idea but it’s not! It didn’t work properly. Constantly resetting distance, which I understand, but then it would freeze afterwards. My issue is why do you care what my prescription is? I’ve purchased multiple pair of glasses from you and my last prescription didn’t change but I don’t want to have to go to the trouble contacting the eye doctor because I’ve already lost the prescription they sent home with me. My kids broke my current glasses (purchased from warby Parker) and I need a new pair ASAP. Didn’t even do the try them on thing, every pair I’ve purchased have been amazing. Just needed a new pair quick. But that can’t happen. I’m paying for it what do you care what the prescription is?????? I dont get it. Do not use VirtualVisionTest. It won’t even work. It’s not like you’ll loose any money, you’ll just get super frustrated and say screw Warby Parker for even teasing me with this option.

Don't recommend! Just a hassle ...

I thought I would give the virtual vision test a try because the holidays are coming up and it would probably be challenging to get an appointment before the year ends. My vision has changed since last year. I completed the vision test using VirtualVisionTest , which was easy, but then I was asked to either upload my expired prescription or scan the boxes of my contacts. I chose to scan the boxes but the barcode of the Acuvue contact lenses wasn't recognized. Then, I emailed Warby Parker a picture of my boxes of contacts and I got a response back within 5 minutes that it would be an unofficial copy and not accepted. If a picture of the boxes of contacts is not accepted (even though it is explicitly listed ad an option!), then why offer this option. It was just a waste of my time. I don't recommend it!

Too limited

It’s such a cool concept and I admit I download VirtualVisionTest just to try it. However, the on-boarding process sets a lot of constriction. For example if you have more than a long distance eye problem, they won’t let you continue. The most frustrating part is you have to enter your eye exam information in order to continue, otherwise, it shows only two buttons: call to make an appointment or call WP, there is no exit button. That said, VirtualVisionTest is not for new patient, it’s not for anyone that has more than distance eye sign problems. With all of the denying without continue process to the real function of VirtualVisionTest , 1) it’s too much work to try out VirtualVisionTest , if it requires me to see an eye doctor, I’ll have my eyes test out without having to open VirtualVisionTest; 2) lost of trust, and the limitation feels VirtualVisionTest is more of a toy than an actual tool to use for eye exam.

life. saver.

i ❤️ glasses (& warby parker & money savings in my pocket) but i absolutely LOVE VirtualVisionTest. i keep my biannual vision appointments but ... the pandemic. i needed a frame update for all my very important zoom calls - but my prescription expired. Enter Warby’s Prescription Check app. Literally, same day - my prescription - which has been basically the same for a decade - is extended.

So, I can see the road when I drive, my kids from across the room, the neighbor down the street - all while being a baddie in new Warby frames from the safety of my home!

Neat

Great concept. For the sunburst test maybe change color of message from red to something else and tell how many takes it will be because red means error to me so I thought I was doing it wrong. Also just saw a note that I couldn’t use one of my glasses from warby parker but couldn’t read the note why. May be ineligible which would be really annoying after taking all that time to do the test. Should be done upfront and screen won’t let me see full message. But wow what a concept!

Thankful for the service / App a little buggy

Great service. My prescription is barely older than a year, but my glasses work great for me. I’m glad I can renew, rather than have to get a comprehensive exam just to order an extra pair of prescription sunglasses. VirtualVisionTest was a little buggy as far as connection is concerned though. Had to start and restart my process multiple times. No way to jump back in where you were if you exit VirtualVisionTest . I kept having to recalibrate my distance, even though I never moved. Finally got it to work though!

Very interesting (and positive) experience

What an interesting look into the interactivity possible in an app computer and human experience. It was intuitive, seamless, accurate, and beautiful. Great UX/UI design!

The only issues I have with any of this product or experience is simply the knowledge that technology like this will be replacing the educated optometrists and other professionals who rely on having meaningful work to do for society. And we need humans with jobs, as well. With growing populations and shrinking industries, I feel as though this is still subject to consider.

Didn’t work

I downloaded this to renew my prescription for Warby Parker glasses. First it only works for distance prescriptions so if you have anything other than that don’t waste your time. The concept is great but flawed. You use your computer and your phone as a “remote”, my computer kept powering down because I wasn’t using it- possibly a setting that I could change and nothing to do with VirtualVisionTest - so I had to keep going to my computer to re-wake it and then had to recalibrate distance every time. Also VirtualVisionTest says you'll have your results within 24 hours and won’t be changed until then- I’m past 48 hours and have a pending charge on my card but no results. Not super impressed.

Extremely straightforward and painless

In my opinion, the people leaving poor reviews are either a)competitors/brick-and-mortar eye doctors, or b)struggle to follow simple directions. Both VirtualVisionTest and computer browser interface worked seamlessly, and I was able to quickly judge my prescription. Typical eye doctor visits are much lengthier and a much bigger pain, and I felt VirtualVisionTest tested my prescription in a way that was every bit as effective.

Doesn’t Even Let Me Start the Vision Test

VirtualVisionTest just doesn’t work. I got to the point where I was supposed to start the eye test, but it just didn’t register my press of the start test button. I tried closing VirtualVisionTest , I tried restarting my iPad but it never worked. I tried pressing the help button in VirtualVisionTest and that didn’t work either.

I’m writing this negative review because it is literally the only way I could get in contact with the apps developers and let them know that VirtualVisionTest is completely broken.

I just lost my insurance and I did not want to pay a ton just to renew my prescription which has not changed. Pointless and a waste of time. I will be moving my business elsewhere.

You Need a Rx

You need a copy of your prescription to use this apparently. Do not bother if you don’t have a copy and only have your glasses. VirtualVisionTest says you either need your prescription or your current glasses. I assumed if you didn’t have your prescription you would do something similar to the glassesusa app to obtain the prescription from the glasses using your camera and computer. Wrong! I went through the entire test and finally at the end it tells me I need to send a copy of my current prescription. I wouldn’t have minded as much if I would have known this before I did the test or if only certain users need to submit the prescription then a disclaimer of this would have been nice as well at the begging of the testing process.

Want to love it, but it doesn’t work

I have been trying to use VirtualVisionTest all morning and can’t get it to go past the location services. It tells me it needs to check my location and the “alrighty” button pops up. Each time a click it VirtualVisionTest shuts down, and when I open it again, I’m back at the home screen to watch the video or skip. I tried clicking multiple times, I tried not pressing and just leaving it, I tried deleting and redone loading, I tried turning off my phone and starting up again, I tried turning on location services manually but VirtualVisionTest doesn’t pop up in the location services settings. Nothing works, just nothing or crashes every single time.

Such a let down.

I took the online vision tests one week ago and have heard nothing, after the prompt said I should have my prescription back within 24 hours. I used the Liingo app that scanned my existing glasses and it generated my exact prescription right away (which was correct), sent my 5 pairs to try on same day and charged me ZERO dollars. At this point, I couldn’t seen my eye doctor several times over. Also, there is no communication via VirtualVisionTest or email about status updates. I did call in and the gentleman who answered the phone was wonderful and apologetic, but did let me know that he couldn’t tell me when they would be able to get to me.

Great service-only minor freeze

This is a great and convenient app!! My arc just expired and I can’t get in to my doc for a month. Easy way to get spectacle Rx. Only issue was app froze after I completed the exam and didn’t remember my completed test. I clicked ‘Ready’ button but no go. Also, make sure your sleep mode on your computer isn’t too short!! VirtualVisionTest interacting with the test site and switching screens didn’t count as activity on my new Mac Pro, it fell asleep a few times.

Super convenient

This is really excellent. The test was short and easy, and very doable at home. I wish it could be used for contacts too but this is a great price for forty bucks. I’m waiting on my test to be approved, but I’m assuming it will since the test went well. Will be using in the future...I’m just excited to get new glasses!

This is a racket.

My prescription has not changed but apparently it has “expired” but have no fear, Warby Parker aka the music man has a solution to the “problem” they created. They will charge you an extra 40 dollars (1/2 the cost of the glasses) to either give you a “new” prescription or make you go to the dr anyway... no 3rd option available of just let me order new glasses with my “old” prescription please. Anyway, I caved, agreed to this online exam and as other reviewers here have stated, the connection between your phone and the computer is so glitchy and some weird lag I had to give up 1/2 way through the tests. Aurgh.

By

Really cool

Very neat app, but it would be a nice reminder to turn your screen saver off because I’m pretty sure it affected my test having to lose the connection a few times and swiping the phone on accident. Also a reminder to pull your cursor out of the way. Mine was touching a few of the letters. Or perhaps at least an easy way to restart a section if you know you screwed up with one of those things. But still very cool.

Preys on the uninformed

This is what happens when tech people think they can be doctors because being "disruptive" is supposedly better than being good. See your doctor IN PERSON. You only have two eyes, so take care of them. Just because you feel that you see well it doesn't mean your eyes are healthy or that you're seeing your best.

Update: so now he’s a “doctor”? This reeks of misleading information that shows just how stupid they think you are. This may be a violation of federal regulations. Apple would be wise to remove VirtualVisionTest before fines and/or civil liability ensue.
