First of all, Costco IS NOT Sam’s Club. There is no scan and go feature, which I understand because not allowing this feature minimizes the risk of theft - and forces you to interact with associates at the store. Also helps keep jobs intact, which is something Costco as a company cares about a lot. I support Costco more simply because of their employee treatment. They wouldn’t even have self checkout if it wasn’t just a consumer demand. Yes, the app needs a lot of updates, but the true reason for the app is to have your membership card on hand at all times IN CASE you forget your card. Not to replace your card completely. Complaining about not being able to use it at the gas pump? Perfect solution - leave your card in your glove box and use the app in the store. Have issues setting it up? Go to the membership desk and ask for help. The app is easy to use, but does have a lot of glitches when setting up; however, if you have the patience to get help, you can get it done!
Just a basic app. Doesn’t excel at anything. I have both a Costco and a Sam’s membership. In terms of money saving Costco is the clear winner but in terms of app features and ability Costco loses. Badly. I go into Costco and there is no self checkout. I wait in line forever to checkout. At Sam’s I scan my items with my phone as I put them in my cart. I apply coupons or discounts on my phone. I pay on my phone. I show my phone to the person at the door instead of my paper receipt. Faster and easier at Sam’s. So is it worth the money savings at Costco compared to the time savings at Sam’s? For now it’s a draw. As my Costco gets busier and they refuse to open more checkout lanes, have self checkout, and allow me to checkout with my phone, probably not.
So, I just renewed an expired membership yesterday. Created a new online account and password, downloaded the app (in spite of horrendous reviews) tried to log in... wrong email or password. Several attempts, no luck. Requested password reset, didn’t come through, didn’t go to spam. Tried again, still no password reset, half an hour now. Went to the regular website and guess what? The email and password I’d written down works fine there. Even tried the app one last time, password still doesn’t work. Maybe if I’m ever able to actually get in I will improve the review, but it’s clear from other reviews that fixing bugs and updating their app is not a priority for Costco.
I’m a recent Costco convert from Sam’s, and my wife and I did our first Costco trip last week. The store was so much nicer, the people were so much friendlier, the selection of products was great... and then I downloaded the app. I’m shocked at how bad this app is for a company as big as Costco. The app feels like it’s from 5+ years ago, it’s literally no comparison to the Sam’s app. It has no ability to tell you what products are in stock at a given store. There are tons of missing items, i.e. I’m in Costco and I search the Costco app for a product that’s sitting right in front of me on a shelf, and there’s zero trace of it in the app. There’s no Scan-and-Go functionality (where you can scan items on the app and pay without having to wait in line). The app literally just got the ability like 2 weeks ago to have an electronic version of your membership card so that you don’t have to carry your card with you to check out... Sam’s app had that years ago. I’m really disappointed in how bad this app is. Even though I really like the Costco stores better, if it wasn’t for my wife strongly preferring shopping at Costco over Sam’s, I’d switch back to Sam’s in a heartbeat just because of how bad this app is. Really hope they blow this app away and just start over.
I have memberships to both Costco and Sam’s. They both have strong and weak points. I love Costco, I like how they treat their employees, their food court is fantastic, it’s cleaner and I generally prefer their product’s. In terms of this app, it’s behind in every way and completely useless to anyone who does want delivery. I’m going to guess that most members do not want to overpay by about $3 per item to have things delivered. Most have a membership to save money. Comparing and contrasting, you cannot shop online and pickup yourself, you cannot scan as you shop and pay by your phone. You can’t even see what is at the club and see the correct price without a delivery markup. You can do all these things with the Sam’s app. Can Costco do all these things if they wanted? Of Course! But it’s not in their strategy. I’m not going to drop my membership by any means, but this app caters to the same people that UberEats McDonalds and Chipotle or maybe anyone that thinks InstaCart is a good idea. This app is pigeonholed and it’s disappointing and not for me.
