About Learning Japanese

This is because this guide does not seek to forcibly create artificial ties between English and Japanese by presenting the material in a way that makes sense in English.

This guide is an attempt to systematically build up the grammatical structures that make up the Japanese language in a way that makes sense in Japanese.

It may not be a practical tool for quickly learning immediately useful Japanese phrases (for example, common phrases for travel).

Instead, examples with translations will show how ideas are expressed in Japanese resulting in simpler explanations that are easier to understand.

For those of you who have learned Japanese from textbooks, you may see some big differences in how the material is ordered and presented.

However, it will logically create grammatical building blocks that will result in a solid grammatical foundation.

You will be required to learn the Kana (Hiragana and Katakana) to be able to fully complete this guide.

Please note that this application does not contain Romaji.

Don't worry though, it's covered in the "Writing System" section.

100% awesome teaching style

I like this more than Rosetta Stone. I know that this is a huge statement, but I speak a few languages, and I have considerable experience when it comes to finding the correct technique per each individual language. I speak a few different languages, and this teacher is quite intelligent in the teaching technique. I absolutely love LearningJapanese. Does Tae Kim have any books published? I would love to buy them all. I like that there is a recommendation made in the description on what supporting apps we should use. I will most definitely utilize those app. Downloading LearningJapanese will insure my success. Thank you!!!

Impressed

Very impressed with LearningJapanese. Best way to learn Japanese and it's free. I love learning languages but this delightful app has made it extra fun to learn a language. Can't wait to finally finish the guide and proudly say I can (somewhat) speak 5 languages.

There's an issue I encountered though. Some lessons won't let you tap a phrase to check the meaning despite being green and underlined. Essential Grammar: Lesson 8 is an example. Not sure if that was done on purpose for kanji memorization purposes, or if they simply forgot to add that feature into certain lessons.
Running iPhone 6, iOS 10. Just in case that's part of the issue.

The Most Sensible Way to Learn Japanese!

I've been a casual student of Japanese for a few years, searching for a teaching system that really makes sense. I've tried several textbooks, online courses, Rosetta Stone, and Pimsleur. This is an entirely new way of approaching the language learning process, and it's brilliant! Elements that have never felt right in the definitions they'd been given elsewhere suddenly make perfect sense. The readings and meanings of kanji are actually sticking with me within the first few minutes of encountering them. I truly can't say enough just how absolutely fantastic this learning software is!

Fantastic resource, w/ excellent features

An excellent on the go version of the Tae Kim website, this contains a sort of ground-up approach to Japanese grammar that is fast and efficient to learn. If you are looking for long-term fluency and understanding, this is a great resources.

Overall, LearningJapanese itself is excellent. The lessons are well laid out, and most vocabulary can be clicked to have a dictionary definition and pronunciation guide pop-up.

My only quibbles, and these are pretty minor, are that the pronunciation and definition pop-ups inexplicably vanish once you reach the advanced topics section. It is very difficult to concentrate on the new grammar when you can't look up phrases like "chemically pure substrates" and other formal/economic/scientific terms. There also seems to be no way to un-bookmark things, so by the end of the guid you may have twenty or more cluttering up your table of contents.

All in all though, this is one of my most used apps! Thank you!

Simply the best

Very organized, comprehensive guide to Japanese grammar. I am a complete beginner and this guide was able to get me off the ground with a solid grammatical foundation. This means a smoother ride going forward because I don't have 'holes' in my understanding of certain structures and rules. By far the best app, or i would even say the best learn material out there, period. Great job starting from the casual versions and moving up to polite versions; which is not the approach taken by many other materials. I found this more effective as it mimics how Japanese is actually taught to children in Japan.

I am shock this is for free

If you are looking to actually understand Japanese and not just how to say "hello" or "cat" and "dog" then grab this mobile textbook right away. I'm still going through the lessons but I learn so much about grammar and sentence structure that I understand simple paragraphs quicker than when I was reading other books. It's easy to google vocabulary so if you looking for lessons that will actually teach you how Japanese people think when they write/speak(because not a direct translate to English like Spanish and Italian) then download this NOW!

A good resource with some kinks to work out

In terms of content and structure, LearningJapanese is fine. I also appreciate that it has a built in dark theme.
However, the ability to tap a highlighted word/phrase to bring up a box with the pronunciation and meaning seems finicky. In fact, I’ve only managed to get it working in one lesson, and it stops working if the font is scaled differently. This is a pretty core feature that essentially breaks Tae Kim’s method for teaching you the various Onyomi and Kunyomi readings for kanji. It’s still possible to learn with an external app’s help, but this is something that really should be fixed at some point

Best Learning App

I've always wanted to learn Japanese for my own personal reasons, but every other app or guide throws you through unconventional loops. This guide breaks everything down to the very basics, making sure you know everything about the characters you will always use several chapters before getting to sentences! The only thing is, and it's the same for anyone learning a language, practice practice practice. I will always recommend this to my friends, colleagues, and anyone interested in learning the language.

Perfect!!!

I can't tell you how awesome LearningJapanese is. It has stroke order which in other apps you usually have to pay for but for here it's free and other such free things....and with good quality!!! It has an abundance of grammar lessons organized very neatly and with thorough explanations and things to watch out for. They even go as far as to give you links for other sources if you need them. Very well thought out! They definitely kept the new learner in mind as well as older ones. They managed to accommodate both very nicely.

Amazing guide

LearningJapanese is the most amazing guide to studying Japanese but I have been wanting an update, as many others do, to continue studying the language. The sad reality is that LearningJapanese was last updated a few years ago so most likely it might not receive an update. I truly hope the developer does develop an update to support iOS 11. I do not want to delete LearningJapanese because it has helped me out greatly and I am happy that I have it available on other platforms aside from the iPhone

Solid app

学校で一年前から日本語を勉強しました。このアップはとてもいいと思います!たくさん漢字があるし、文法を教えるし。皆んなはダウンロードしなければいけませんね!

I've read a couple other reviews that blew my mind complaining about having to learn kanji and even grammar rules......TAKE HEED: If you don't like kanji, don't learn Japanese. If you don't like grammar, don't learn another language. Japanese is a category 5 language. That's a fancy way of saying fluency will be denied to anyone who refuses to take it seriously--that's a promise.

I'm saying this as a precautionary message for all of you who aren't sure about learning it. With this language, you either go big or go home. Learn the kanji. I did it, so anyone can, and LearningJapanese will have you learn it without much effort.

For those who desire fluid reading, LearningJapanese is the way to go! Of all the other free apps, this has the most content. How can you go wrong? You can't unless you give up. 諦めないで! ダウンロードしてみて!Download it and see!

Best Japanese Grammar App

If you're looking to learn both written Japanese grammar and conversational speaking grammar, then I highly recommend LearningJapanese. I used this guidebook during and after my time studying abroad in Japan and it helped immensely with understanding what was being said around me. This was especially important as many language-learning software neglect the casual conversational aspect of Japanese. This is a very comprehensive app that is totally worth the download and has the potential to be helpful for Japanese learners of virtually any level.

すごい!

LearningJapanese is wonderfully organized and teaches in an easy to understand way. It walks you through the basic rules of the Japanese language with charts that you can refer back to if you forget how to conjugate a verb or its tense. If you forget what a kanji means you can click on it and it will tell you exactly what it means with the hiragana pronunciation. It even includes a practice session at the end of each lesson to reinforce what was taught along with new kanji to expand you vocabulary. ありがとございますたえきむーさん!

Not E.B. White, But Close

Tae Kim's "Learning Japanese" offers a superbly simple deconstruction of a complex language into its fundamental components through a series of easy to understand lessons.

Time and again you will find yourself exclaiming "a-ha! (i.e. でさえ、ですら、ーかねる、~ざるを得ない、だらけ、まみれ、etc) as the subject matter and the method of teaching fit together seamlessly.

While "Learning Japanese" might not be the equivalent of E.B. White's "The Elements of Style" for students of Japanese, the application certainly solidifies the unstable ground walked on by many who've struggled with the language over the years.

If given the chance to improve an already incredible app, I would build a companion app covering much of the same material and deploy it with a game mechanic that challenges students to put their new knowledge to the test.

I'd pay $10 for that.

Awesome

It's an amazing tool that has worked wonders for me. I would love to see split screen support in order to run it side by side with other language tools I'm using. I sincerely hope the support for LearningJapanese isn't over. But as it is, it is fully functional. The exercises are great, and I love that it doesn't use romaji. It's a legit learning tool. I do wish it had pronunciation audio to help you pronounce the words you're learning. Still a five star app as it is.

Love it but one problem

I love LearningJapanese so far being that I barely got and am barely starting to use it however there's something that should be fixed and that's that some of the video links don't work while others do. Please fix those links, cause if there's stuff in the videos that's not in LearningJapanese then I'll be missing out on info that I probably need. Aside from that I love LearningJapanese.

I like it. No. I LOVE it.

I learned so much today, and I barely started! This is by far the best "class" (or I guess "source"?) I've used so far! Kim makes it so much easier to learn. I can actually commit to this. I like the fact of learning characters. I've made the mistake of trying to learn romaji. It just confused me all around when I did that. LearningJapanese fixed my confusion! :D
Thank you so much for putting your time into this! It's greatly appreciated!

Best Japanese learning app

Among all the Japanese learning apps available, I found this one simply the best - unlike millions of other apps that just throw you hiragana, katakana, and entry-level greetings, LearningJapanese provides you the essential grammars, detailed explanations, and examples that all Japanese beginners and intermediate learners need. What I love most is that it's available on multiple platforms - iPhone, iPad, and website, so I get to learn Japanese wherever and whenever. Plus, it's free!

I'm actually learning.

LearningJapanese is a great way to learn on the go. The tutor, Tae Kim, has this sense of how Japanese should be taught to a beginner and it actually works better than other formats I've tried to use. The written tutorials also link to videos that go into deeper detail, and there are also practice sections attached to the lessons to apply what you've learned. Thank you for your hard work. I can't wait to keep going.

Student's and Beginner's Required Reading!

I've been studying Japanese for six years now and never have I learned more about the language than from reading this!

It forces you to learn kana, giving you a huge leg-up in your reading skills, it teaches you about not only grammar, but how the Japanese think, and thus why the language is how it is, and it does it simply, plainly, and succinctly!

There really is nothing better!
