I absolutely love how LearnJapaneseHiragana teaches Japanese how many lessons there are. My only problem is that I can’t even do the Ka group of Hiragana because you have to pay for any lessons after the first one. This doesn’t make any sense because the you can do the first group of every lesson but none after that. If you are trying to learn Japanese from the beginning (like me) you have no choice but to pay for any lesson past vowels. I think that it would make more sense if you could do all of Hiragana without payment, and then have to pay for the lessons. This would make it so that people would more have time spent on LearnJapaneseHiragana to decide whether or not they want to pay, and not have to ask themselves, “Should I pay for this and end throwing away my money because I don’t actually like LearnJapaneseHiragana since I didn’t have the choice to explore it first?”
Please change the payment time. I would absolutely love LearnJapaneseHiragana and use it all the time if you did. But, until then, I’m deleting LearnJapaneseHiragana because I’m a student who can’t afford to possibly waste money.

I absolutely love LearnJapaneseHiragana! I totally recommend LearnJapaneseHiragana if your wanting to learn Japanese. It shows you how to write the letters and you vowels. One thing I really love is that you can go back to your lesson that you were learning, even though you did great you can redo it and do even greater. It’s definitely earns a 5/5 star rating. LearnJapaneseHiragana is not complicated to use its nice and simple. The makers of LearnJapaneseHiragana did a great job. I believe any age limit can use this it’s for young to old. I have no complaints, I’m 12 and I have been learning Japanese and plan on learning much more! I love LearnJapaneseHiragana it gave me a new experience in the Japanese world! The problem that I don’t like is that you have to pay for the rest of the lessons. If your making an app to teach people Japanese then let all of the lessons be for free. Not everyone one wants to pay for a tutor or online classes. I have really liked LearnJapaneseHiragana so far. The problem is that I’m going to have to delete LearnJapaneseHiragana because I will have to pay for lessons. Other wise LearnJapaneseHiragana is nice.

i don’t want to be “that person” but this is ana amazing app and that makes you pay for every lesson after vowels. i really liked it and the way it’s set up lets you trace, match characters to letters, match letters to characters, and try on your own. you can also redo the lesson if you need. i was really learning and doing good and about to move on but to move to the next lesson i would need to pay. it made me upset because i am not in a position to be paying LearnJapaneseHiragana and i realize they need money but i was really hopeful for LearnJapaneseHiragana and out of 6 apps this was the most helpful.
i don’t want to give a bad review for money issues but at the same time i might have to delete LearnJapaneseHiragana and i wouldn’t recommend even downloading unless you are willing to pay for it because there isn’t any option to keep learning unless you pay.
i really wish i could give 5 stars because from what i see it’s an amazing app and well developed and extremely helpful for learning japanese but the least you could do is say like- a couple lessons a day instead of unlimited unless you pay. instead one lesson and you have to pay from then out. i really hope my review is taken into consideration and i can learn because as i’ve said it’s an amazing app and i don’t see anything wrong with it. you can go back and redo lessons if you forget and the design for learning is amazing. please make this affordable for those who can’t pay and i would gladly change my review but until then...

I have wanted to learn Japanese for some time. Free apps like Duo__ (you know that one) are pretty great, but incomplete for Japanese in one particular and significant way, at least for how I discovered I need to learn. Although I added the appropriate language keyboard so I could immerse myself more, I still didn't feel like I was connecting the sounds with the the characters, and more importantly, I didn't quite feel like it was connecting with me yet. I need to learn how to write them in my own hand, to feel the language too. LearnJapaneseHiragana does just that, and I've only done Katagana lesson 1. I will be buying the full suite of lessons, though! The only feedback I have, which is why it's 4 stars and not 5, is that I would love the option to practice just one syllable/character over and over. (I'm having tremendous trouble with mastering あ for some reason.) That aside, LearnJapaneseHiragana is exactly what I was hoping it would be!

I’m just starting off learning Japanese. I’m bored at home and have always wanted to be trilingual. Usually, I hear good thing a about you-know-what owl app… that wasn’t doing it for me… all I remembered was the sounds and not how to write hiragana or katakana. If you enjoy a good mental challenge, this is LearnJapaneseHiragana for you. I can not stress this enough… LearnJapaneseHiragana helped me learn them super quick through repetition and forcing my mind to memorize them in a fun way. I’m barely a novice at japanese but I can confidently say that this is the best app to learn Japanese by far… I started off with the free level to learn hiragana… and the characters stuck… I finally was able to remember them, so I didn’t mind spending $7 for the chance to learn a skill that will pay off in the future through new friends or business opportunities. I would definitely recommend LearnJapaneseHiragana to anyone looking to g eat into learning Japanese, whether it be for travel, business, or for being able to understand text.

There are a few lessons given for free so you can test LearnJapaneseHiragana out before you buy it. I bought the upgrade and I'm not disappointed. It teaches you hiragana and katakana then teaches you the basics of speech then onto verbs, questions, and then adjectives. It's super thorough and makes sure you have a good understanding before you proceed to the next lesson. But if you already know hiragana and katakana then you don't have to do that level. Someone was concerned because the characters are highly stylized. This is true but underneath the title of the lesson is the characters you're about to learn and they are written normally. If you are committed to it, LearnJapaneseHiragana will help you learn very fast! So if you want to learn the language LearnJapaneseHiragana is definitely worth the money.

LearnJapaneseHiragana is exactly what I was hoping for. I meant to write a review many weeks ago, but I’m unsure if I ever submitted it. Using LearnJapaneseHiragana , over the last couple months, I’ve fully memorized all of Hiragana, Katakana, and I’ve moved through most of their additional lessons, which have been great.
The interface is clean and simple. It works in landscape, unlike other apps. I recall being able to memorize something like 20 or 30 Hiragana on my very first use of LearnJapaneseHiragana . You have the ability to review test yourself at any point, and the tests are always different. The ability to constantly test my knowledge is important to me, because I’m a slower learner.
LearnJapaneseHiragana price is modest, and inoffensive to me for what you get. I had previously downloaded many different apps, and tried other methods, but I was always searching for something like this. I am very happy with it. I bought it after about 2 minutes upon viewing how it worked. I’ve already bought their “Kanji” app for when I’m finished with this one too.
Anyways, I recommend it and cheers to all the other Japanese language learners out there!

Downloaded a few apps and played around until I was hit with a paywall and did not feel enough of an impression to pay for them. When I started using this one, its simplicity and fast pace actually really helped. I really enjoyed using the first lesson up to the paywall, and ran through it again before I decided LearnJapaneseHiragana is worth the $7 payment. Its simplicity just feels so clean and the lessons are very fun to do. Im actually taking away alot more than I thought I would. Anyone considering learning to read and write japanese, I fully recommend LearnJapaneseHiragana! The repetition is actually a serious help as I can breeze through a bunch of lessons because I taught myself to memorize characters and sounds from writing and hearing them over and over again. Im only about halfway through hirigana, but I feel as though it has already been money well spent. It will even tell you what you need to review from precious lessons to get better at the lesson you are currently on. Fantastic app!

The Japanese! App was the first step I took in the process of learning Japanese. Though I am still new to learning Japanese LearnJapaneseHiragana has helped me greatly. Not only does it teach you to read hiragana and katakana it also teaches you how to write the individual characters, a great step when first learning. Plus also, there are other sections to learn in like vocabulary. Not only is it a great learning device, but it is also easy to use. You do not need any tech skills in order to use LearnJapaneseHiragana or understand it. I have never once received an ad on LearnJapaneseHiragana , it purely helps me focus on the language and learn. Please consider Japanese! as your starting point in Japanese or as a great practice device for further along Japanese learners.

This is one of the few games/apps I’ve ever paid for outright on LearnJapaneseHiragana Store almost immediately. It’s very simple and streamline but actually helps me *learn*. The Genki apps are worthless in comparison. I can easily recall in apps like Duolingo but making me pull from memory without multiple choice is something entirely different. AND it teaches hiragana/katakana with stroke order. That was a game changer for me. It’s entirely worth the few dollars to go ahead and purchase without a doubt. Great for quick practice. I just started into “basics” on LearnJapaneseHiragana as I was just using it to memorize kana but I’ll definitely continue through the lessons as a review and supplement to my other learning material. (I use Genki I & Japanese from Zero as well as KawaiiNihongo for my main sources btw)

I enjoy using LearnJapaneseHiragana! I am beginning to teach myself Japanese and I’m starting off with Hiragana first. I love how it’s broken down into Hiragana-and has lessons with using Hiragana. Also, with Katana it has the lessons to go along with each specific part! I also use this with my daughter so she can listen and follow along as well!!! This has helped me so much and I will be purchasing the full bundle in order to have access to everything within LearnJapaneseHiragana ! I need to invest in getting some hiragana and katana writing practice sheets to work on my writing (currently using two notebooks) one for vocabulary and grammar! I would recommend anyone to get LearnJapaneseHiragana and see if you like it! It’s great for beginners in addition to the other Japanese learning apps that I have I’m learning at a very fast rate with the hiragana so far! Love, love, love it!!!

I have been studying Japanese for a while, and decided to download another app. This is really helpful for learning how characters are written. However, I already know all hiragana and katakana. I think you should be able to choose your current level of how far you’ve gotten of learning Japanese. For instance, you could have “Level 1” as not knowing any Japanese, so you have everything to learn. Level 2 could be when you know Hiragana and Katakana. Level 3 could be when you know basic phrases/structures.
If you already know kana, you could select a level 2 so you don’t have to practice kana, because you’ve already learned them with something else.
I would love it if you could take this into consideration!

I am overall extremely happy with LearnJapaneseHiragana. The layout is very user-friendly and encouraging, and the pacing is nice as it gives you full and rather useful sentences early on. That being said, this is not a course that will get you to be sufficient by any means, and I would use it just as a starting point for people who want to seriously study the language.
I already know hiragana and katakana, so I skipped over those lessons, but I don’t think they would take long for people who are starting from scratch. I plan to finish parts 3-6 by the end of the month, and then I will start Genki I and the rest of that series. I have no doubt that the knowledge I gained from LearnJapaneseHiragana will help me understand Genki and get through it more quickly.
Thanks to the developer of LearnJapaneseHiragana! You really hit it out of the park.

In duolingo it just has you remember the symbol by itself, this one does it in groups of like sounds, then the next lesson is with the same symbol but with the extra mark (like ki ke ka to gi ge ga).I highly suggest the writing part on because it helps immensely in memorizing them. If you click on the chart on the top it’ll show you what you need help memorizing with colors, like red is just learned, yellow you need work on and green means you got it down and it labels the lesson as “learned” so you can keep track of what you learned and need help with. I also appreciate that in some of the questions it’ll show the letters in classic calligraphy style so it teaches you what it looks like when written that way also. LearnJapaneseHiragana is perfect for learning Japanese 10/10 would recommend, the price is so worth it.

I really enjoy LearnJapaneseHiragana. Paid for the full version and completely hooked! I spent hours learning and reviewing with LearnJapaneseHiragana. It is such a delight feature to have writing practices for hiragana and katakana.
Is there room for improvement? Yes. It would be so much nicer if it offered more handwriting styles for hiragana. For example, there is the four-stroke ふ taught by most of the Japanese learning sites I’ve seen but LearnJapaneseHiragana only accepts three strokes. Also, it would be great if LearnJapaneseHiragana allows user to say “I don’t know” for the handwriting part with a blank screen. It happened to me a few times that I didn't know the answer so I drew random doodles and somehow got it “right” (it was not actually right - just match the pattern LearnJapaneseHiragana was expecting).
Overall, it is more like a 4.5-star but I gave it a 5-star. Recommend this fun app to beginners!

This is a very interactive app that presents lessons in a practical manner that make it possible to actually learn how to read and write Japanese characters. It has tracing at the beginning of each lesson which quickly evolves it to writing the character completely from memory. It is designed to work at the learners pace, so it’s neither too fast for beginners, nor is it boring for seasoned independent learners. LearnJapaneseHiragana also encourages frequent lesson reviews, which is key for long term success.
As a kindergarten and Special Education teacher, I recommend a combination of stylus use as well as finger tracing. Young children are encouraged to trace letters with their fingers as this is key in teaching the subconscious how to RECOGNIZE letters. Use of a stylus will allow the brain to learn the BASIC MOTOR SKILL of writing the Japanese characters with a pen.
Personally, I enjoy using an electronic format versus traditional pen and paper as the use of traditional workbooks either requires paper wasting copies or page tearing erasing. LearnJapaneseHiragana work space is always fresh and ready to use! I also noticed immediately that I hold the stylus more like a paintbrush than a pen, which I find ideal as Japanese is traditionally written with brush stokes.
Great app and well worth the price.

Tbh, this is the best app I've found for learning Japanese, and although you have to pay a bit to learn everything LearnJapaneseHiragana has to offer, it's completely worth it. Also I think that the way that it teaches you is awesome! I looked ahead through the last chapters and saw that it had the hiragana you learned at the beginning then gave the meaning of the word the characters created, and had the kanji underneath. And if you've heard of other things to learn Japanese like a website called lingualift (which costs $15), I think that this half price app is the same quality or better, and although this is just my opinion and you may not agree, you should still get LearnJapaneseHiragana and try the free version and see for yourself! I didn't check, but if this company doesn't have any other language learning apps, I would love to see them make some!

It’s GREAT if you need to refresh your learning and for beginners. At first I thought it was too easy since I only needed to refresh what I already know but I continued through and ended up buying the full lesson. Mind you, I’ve tried countless apps but they just miss the mark because if you feel like you have some of your katakanas as and hiraganas down, then you need to head the pronounciation more often and you need to learn the correct way of writing it. I ended up ordering a $10 pen for my phone so that I can practice my writing better.
I also skipped a couple of levels to check out how it teaches you writing and so far, I liked how I taught kanji. It shows you reading it first before you memorize how to write it which I believe is essential because you need to become familiarized with kanji first before you can try to remember how to write it.

This is my favourite app for learning Japanese, and I have been downloading and trying so many by now that I feel like my perspective is valid.
At the time that I found LearnJapaneseHiragana, I already knew hiragana and katakana, so I was mostly drawn to the grammar portion of LearnJapaneseHiragana. I especially am loving the way it uses kanji only when introducing words (in my case, I know how to say these vocabulary words but may or may not have learned the kanji or how to conjugate the verbs/use them in a sentence) and it is really helping me understand. I like the way the wordbank grows throughout the "levels" so that you actually have to know which kanji are what, even though the lines they fit onto may give you a little hint, I'm finding this still very useful.
LearnJapaneseHiragana will help you familiarize yourself with kanji, and help you understand the grammar/sentence structure of the language. I'm liking it so much I just had to leave a review. Hope this helped!

I have a preference for learning large material. I have to associate things in order to retain information for my short term memory. The difference between LearnJapaneseHiragana and other popular apps for me is how they grouped lessons. I hate apps that just says “lesson one learning phrases” then they add a sprinkle of hiragana and other elements I am ignorant to and then I have no way to retain it. I have had a popular app for 2 years and haven’t learned a single thing from it. With LearnJapaneseHiragana, 2 weeks in I already have all hiragana characters memorized and can actually read words at a decent pace.
I also would like to say, when I had an issue with a lesson that didn’t differentiate 2 alphabets (they are spelled the same in English alphabet) they immediately fixed the problem after one simple email and let me know that it was updated.
Overall, with the combination of a great product and awesome customer service I am so happy with my purchase. This is exactly what I needed.

Okay so I pesonally think LearnJapaneseHiragana is really unique because it lets you draw all the vowels and stuff, and it’s way different from apps like Duolingo, it doesn’t spam email or notification on you and I like that! But, here’s what I don’t like about it...
So once I was reviewing all my vowels, and when I did “O” it kept making me restart like I did it wrong, but I did お!It was a bit messy, but it was still right! But it still made me restart like 3 times! Same with “E” I did it, it wasn’t perfect but it was still え!But it STILL made me restart!
Another thing I really don’t like about LearnJapaneseHiragana is, after I finished my vowels level, it told me that I needed to pay $2.00 to move on and $8.00 to unlock everything! Seriously... WHAT?! I understand with duolingo, but it made me to pay if I wanted to learn japanese. Why is that? I don’t know, probably because LearnJapaneseHiragana is probably not worth it.
I wish you could LearnJapaneseHiragana because I liked it at first, but after I finished the vowels “A” and “I” I have had a bad experience. So “A” and “I” are the first things you’ll learn in LearnJapaneseHiragana, so that means LearnJapaneseHiragana is PRETTY BAD. I recommend not getting LearnJapaneseHiragana IF you don’t wanna get mad. This is JUST MY OPINION so don’t hate me just because I kind of don’t like LearnJapaneseHiragana! Bye. (¬_¬) Oh, and sorry if I offended you :(

LearnJapaneseHiragana has been very helpful, along with Memrise, for learning Japanese. I paid to upgrade it.
The only real complaint I have so far is that some of the characters dont look right. They are highly stylized, and look nothing like the character would look hand written or printed in a basic Japanese font. For example, "fu" looks oddly squished compared to the basic character, and "ya" Looks significantly different. A native Japanese speaker might recognize them, but I don't, and it makes it confusing when I see these characters elsewhere and they look nothing like I remember.
It would be nice if they would add in a method for teaching stroke order, because I have found that I can't properly write the characters after memorizing them. I recognize them when reading, but I have to go back and look at the to be able to write them. I can use another app for that, but it would be nice to have it in a single app.

I've really enjoyed using LearnJapaneseHiragana, I even paid to upgrade it! Totally worth every penny, and I really like the order they introduce new characters.
The one issue I have noticed, though, is that when I'm using the "Review All" feature, two of the options are always あ and き plus very often と. This takes all the challenge out of the process when the answer will always be the symbol that changed. I also wish that they would make the review feature longer, so that it would always include every character form every lesson you have completed. Right now it is just a hand full.
Still an overall spectacular tool. I would absolutely recommend it and I hope that an update might come along to improve my one nitpick.

I studied Japanese in college about 25 years ago and am trying to relearn it now. I've downloaded lots of apps and this one is by far the best I've found. I paid for the upgrade, and it was so worth the money. I've been able to review the kana and grammar, plus learn some more kanji along the way. It's made me realize that I remember more than I thought I did, in addition to building a stronger foundation for further study. I highly recommend LearnJapaneseHiragana for those who want to refresh their knowledge (since I already knew some Japanese, I can't speak to how well it would, work for a complete beginner, but for my purposes it's perfect.) if it only had stroke order & the ability to practice writing it would be perfect!
by Surfinandsailin
So far this is not necessarily an amazing very first step in learning Japanese but it is GREAT for hammering character memorization once you have been properly introduced to the characters. As others have mentioned, the font used is very fancy hand written characters which I actually find useful for real life application as well...just not for total newbies.
The easy to use and effective "flash card multiple choice" type questions are the best tool I have been able to find, which is why I sprung the $7.99 for this, but I'm only willing to do so to fast-track my learning as much as possible. Overall quite satisfied so far, I'll update if that changes after Hiragana lessons are done!
