About EWG s Food Scores

EWG’s Food Scores houses information on tens of thousands of foods in a simple, searchable online format designed to guide consumers to healthy, affordable food that’s good for people and the planet.

The ingredient concerns algorithm focuses on factors such as the likely presence of key contaminants, pesticides, hormones and antibiotics and the health implications of certain food additives.

The nutrition scoring algorithm considers multiple factors, including calories, saturated fat, trans fat, sugar, sodium, protein, fiber and fruit, vegetable and nut content.

The processing score reflects EWG's best estimate of the extent to which a particular food has been processed.

Scoring factors include modification of individual ingredients from whole foods and the number of artificial ingredients.

How does your food score? How do we know what we’re eating, really? Food processors make so many claims these days.

How did we come up with our scores? We combine these ratings into a single overall product score.

Supermarkets are loaded with foods that contain chemicals no one can pronounce.

Won’t load comparisons

I buy mostly organic, so my items do mostly show ratings numbers, however, the comparisons feature is useless. Won’t download, can’t designate as a favorite because it never goes beyond the "download" screen.

Amazing concept with the worst execution

Was really excited about this until I tried loading literally any of the product’s rating pages. Not a single one actually loads. Really disappointed in this because of the potential that was there. Maybe the developers will make it so it works at some point.

Articles WILL NOT LOAD

Hi. I’d love to use EWGsFoodScores more but none of the articles will load with more detailed information. I can search for a brand, it will list a bunch of items but when I click on that specific tab to get more calcification on the actual food, the page will not load! Please update! Also, a lot of food brands are missing.

Great concept, doesn’t load items

Really wanted this to work, but I’ve scanned everything in my pantry and nothing comes up. Then I browse for items and click on any I find (even though I don’t have those items) just to see how it’s scored and it never loads to show that. Great concept, poorly executed. Hopeful updates will fix it.

Great idea

App freezes whenever you open a food to look at the details. 🙁

By

Too few products

The concept is great, but EWGsFoodScores contains too few products and lots of Standard American Diet stuff, which I am not buying anyway. Needs to expand to more GF, Paleo, AIP, etc. items.

Crashes consistently when touching the menu bar

I have an iPhone X. When I open EWGsFoodScores, all I have to do is touch the menu bar to get a list and then app immediately crashes. It has therefore lost all value.

By

Loading

EWGsFoodScores seems great! However, whenever I click on the product to expand the scores, it is just continually loading.

By

Total waste of time

EWGsFoodScores is completely useless it worked once upon a time it doesn’t anymore save space on your phone do not download EWGsFoodScores

By

“Downloading...”

It actually needs to work. Looking at a food item, it’s been downloading the details of one item for the past 30 minutes.

By

Not found

I scanned about a dozen products from national brands to house brands to what I have to call total unknowns. Not a single one was found in the database. I am not interested in providing EWG with products to investigate. Until it works as claimed it will remain deleted.

By

Great idea; doesn’t work

Potentially useful app but whenever you click on any of the products the page will not load.

Does not work

I can search products, but I can’t see the information when I click on them. It does not download.

By

App crashes when accessing menu

On home screen, after tapping the menu icon (3 horizontal lines), EWGsFoodScores crashes. iPhone 6. iOS 10.3.3.

By

No longer useful

Used to be OK. Had some products, but limited. Now, nothing. Never finds any item. I wish it still worked and would continue to add products.

By

App does not work to scan bar codes totally worthless

Camera will not work to scan within app. Totally worthless

By

Doesn’t load information

Doesn’t work and hasn’t been updated in years.

By

Doesn’t work. Downloading forever.

App doesn’t work. Anything I click on it says “downloading” with the wheel of death. Can’t see any of the info.

regarding the body-care database

The stars I give represent not the reality but the idea behind EWGsFoodScores , which could be so amazing if given an ounce of effort on EWG’s part. I downloaded Skin Deep, EWGsFoodScores this came from, a few years ago but never got much use out of it — everything I scanned was not part of their database. I was excited to see they’d updated EWGsFoodScores and combined it with one for food items. I’m really disappointed to see it’s no better than it was before. It has info for maybe one in ten items in my house, and not the ones I was most interested in seeing. These are common products from big-name brands purchased from Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and the like. What the hell is in your database if not those? Seriously, what? Who do you think is using this product if not people who shop at Whole Foods, the nation’s top retailer of natural products? I wonder if I would have better luck scanning crappy Revlon products at CVS or Kmart? Come on, EWG, show a little effort. It could be such an amazing resource with a little work updating your database. Until then, two stars is me being generous.

Doesn’t not work at all

I type in food categories and specific brand names and nothing happens. Tried the scanner, just as useless. Good concept, bad execution.

By

Time waster

None of the items that I barcode scanned were in their database.

By

Blah

Doesn’t recognize any barcodes

By

Good idea, but barely useful.

Most of the items I scanned/searched were not in the system. You also cannot search by food type, and there is no way to see the "better" alternatives to the item you scan. Information is not accurate, for example, I scanned a product with a no gmo label - EWGsFoodScores gave it a bad score for containing gmo ingredients.

Finally

I am so excited to find an app to cut the confusion! I just downloaded it, so I have yet to use it but am extremely excited to have the ability to cut to the chase while standing in front of a product in the isle and find valuable info beyond the label. At first I thought, why do I need this if I eat whole foods, but I do buy broths, coffees, almond and coconut milks, etc. so even if you are a perimeter shopper, I think this will be quite helpful! Thanks!
Only thing I can think of that would make this even better is if it had a Q scanner or upc?
I will be back with a full use review!

Great resource

Just downloaded and checked several items in our pantry. Highly useful info, though it's important to understand the suppositions that guide the ratings. Items that were not recognized tend to be store brand. When an item is not recognized, EWGsFoodScores tells you that the barcode has been added to a list for update, so good promise for a rapidly improved database.
