EarMachine Overview

What is EarMachine?

EarMachine is an app that helps users listen to the sounds they want to hear. It is designed to be helpful in various situations, from noisy restaurants to watching TV at home. The app is funded by the National Institutes of Health in the United States.

Features

- Simple Interface, Complex Processing: EarMachine has a simple interface that allows users to adjust over 150 signal processing parameters with a simple swipe of their finger on a wheel. The mapping from wheel position to parameter values is based on a large-scale analysis of the hearing status of over 10,000 people.

- EarShare: An intelligent recommendation engine: EarMachine contains a recommendation engine called EarShare that listens to the sounds around the user and recommends wheel positions based on large-scale analyses of hearing abilities and the user's app usage. The recommendations improve the more the user uses the app.

- Listen to whatever sounds you want: EarMachine allows users to choose whether they want to listen to the microphone in their iOS device or earbuds (iOS 7 only). Users can also listen to songs/podcasts in their music library.

- State of the Art Signal Processing: The signal processing in EarMachine is similar to what is used in most hearing instruments. It includes a wide-dynamic range multiband compressor, a multiband limiter, and an expander to ensure that quiet sounds are amplified while protecting users from loud sounds. Users can also use EarMachine as a sound level meter (works best with phone microphone).

WHAT A BOON!! SAVED ME!!

I'm sitting at a 4-day business conference, as I write this. One of my hearing aids is entirely nonfunctional; the other needs adjustment badly. My first day at the conference: The small meeting rooms have no mics; the large room does, but in both cases, all I'm hearing from the speakers is "Mrrr-brrr-nunn-bunn-sbee-brrr-gnn." And I'm gonna have four days of this? I'm considering spending the four days in the hotel bar. (Might as well!) I'm thinking, "Someone should invent an app for this." Then I'm thinking, "Hey, maybe someone did." So I go to the app store and ... WHAM!! There it is: Ear Machine. WOW!! Loud! CLEAR! I was just hoping for a volume boost, but there's a separate, adjustable high-frequency boost as well. Sibilent sounds are suddenly back. "Wrist" no longer sounds like "rift." I'm hearing and understanding every single word from every speaker. EVERY word, clear as a bell. My hearing aids, when working properly, were not this good in a conference-room situation. Saved the entire conference week for me. WOW, again! And many thanks!

Love how simple it is to use and sound Quality is excellent. Like the option to switch mics between phone and headset. And unlike other hearing apps this one donโ€™t try to hustle you for money every other time you use it. Also there is a reason why wired headsets are used Bluetooth headsets have horrible sound Quality on a analog type system for hearing. Wired is the only way to go for High quality live sound.

Best of class

I have been trying four hearing apps on iphone X w/Apple earbuds and also a few hearing aids. My issue is not volume but clarity with multiple talkers, words in songs, talking room to room, etc. Ear Machine (on iPhone X) runs flawlessly and does this quicker, easier, and more effectivelyโ€”without fiddling with settings, profiles, etc. For me it is as good or better than the $2K-$6K hearing aids.
