Lousy Support on iOS 13
2022-05-21
by Elkanah
Unless you type perfectly, Newton is incredibly cumbersome to use on iOS 13 with an external keyboard. I am using the Apple iPad Keyboard Folio and Newton refuses to recognize ANY of the arrow keys to move the cursor and also doesn’t recognize the Option or Command keys when paired with the Delete key. Want to delete by word (OPT+Delete)? Can’t want to delete the line (CMD+Delete)? Can’t do that either. Want to copy, cut, and move a line to a lower place in an email? Get ready to have to only interface on the screen because Newton won’t allow you to use the arrows to move the cursor or highlight text.
I reached out to Newton about this problem back when iOS 13 was in beta. I was told they knew about it and that it would be fixed in the next update. Well, iOS 13 is out, they did an update a week ago (first one in six moths), and the problem hasn’t been fixed.
I was a paid supporter and avid evangelist of Newton both before and after it’s temporary demise. I cannot in good conscience recommend it right now. I am sadly starting to wonder if this is an omen of how NewtonMail is going to be supported (or not) in the future despite it being priced as a premium software/service.
Please Newton, pull it together and be what everyone is hoping you can be. If this gets addressed, I will GLADLY update this review.
UPDATES! UPDATES! UPDATES!

I must be the biggest sucker on the planet. NewtonMail was a lifesaver for me when first brought to market. When it went to a subscription model, I was happy to pay. I don’t mind subscriptions because they ensure the product will be updated and maintained, and it was. Then it was shut down by Cloud Magic which was awful since I had really grown to depend on it. Thereafter, it was unexpectedly revived. I was thrilled and I happily paid my $50. And NewtonMail was almost immediately orphaned. No updates - no support. After a year of doing nothing but collecting subscription fees, in come new owners. Again, I shell out $50 on the promise of liberal updates. What did we get? Bug fixes - then, once again, silence from the developer. I feel like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football. Ok, rant over. I’m going back to the Gmail app until we see some real updates.

Newton is still a very simplified design email. Everything was shaped to be fast, light and very intuitive. As premium users, I was disappointed to see Newton shut down its service last year. Was closed to be unable to find an alternative one.
Yesterday I was so surprised to see my favorite email was back into service (since Feb 2019 - a bit late, I know). Not hesitant even for a second to re-download and re-subscribe. However, the new privacy policy is very vague. Under Essential’s umbrela, it seems to me Newton is collecting every info of users to build a full profile of users. Too many general “words of guarantee” at points that need to specify. So upset and decided to let NewtonMail RIP.
Essential - you already did a good job to restore one of the most excellent mobile email tool ever created. But you also failed it again due to your re-shaped privacy policy. Ppl can’t pay to get a non-priviledge service.
Mostly works but development has been stagnated.

Used to really enjoy using Newton. Was quite excited when it came back. But it appears that development and maintenance has been minimum since then. Issues and bugs have been gradually accumulating. Syncing problems, read receipt not working, minor UI bugs that never got fixed, etc. Happy to support you guys but perhaps cutting development and support cost alone isn’t enough to keep things afloat in the long run.
There is a market for premium email apps that “just works” with some power user feature. Maybe consider a similar business model like Superhuman? Whatever it is, I just hope that Newton isn’t on its way to a slow death. Good work so far(still) and looking forward.
I have used CloudMagic in the past and recently signed up for Newton. The main thing I like about is that I can use this across all my devices (iPhone, iPad and windows PC). So far NewtonMail is working flawless and deliver gmail immediately to my phone; something that Apple native mail app fails to do. I can also customize my signature with HTML.
The reason I’m not giving 5 starts is that this is too expensive. I mean $50/year is too much for a email app. I’m going to use this for one year and depending on the performance, I might purchase subscription for another year or will discontinue.
Also, all the connected apps that comes with it are useless. I don’t use any of them. So that feature is useless to me.
Feature Rich App

At first I was reluctant to sign up for a subscription based app, but after using Newton for a short while, I was hooked. Many emails I write require follow up, so knowing when an email has been read is very helpful. That feature alone made NewtonMail worth it. I also need to store emails I receive in an organized, uncluttered way. Newton's expandable and collapsible folders allow me to do that. One-click unsubscribe, send later and undo send have also become an indispensable part of my workflow. Using the Share Extension I can even turn emails into to-do items in my task manager app. And all this functionality comes wrapped in an esthetically pleasing and easy-to-interface.
Outstanding simplicity

I believe I fall in the category “have tried them all”, or at least I can say I tried all of the recommend and high rated email apps. For me personally, Newton stands out for its overall simplicity, while offering all the functionality I want from an email app. The UI doesn’t get in your way, NewtonMail feels fast, performs well and offers the right amount of customization. Having versions of the same app on iOS, macOS and watchOS was one of the key selling features for me. No matter on what device I am, the experience translates well. Paying $ for a great app like Newton is a no-brainer: I use it every day and I much rather have NewtonMail improved over time than a free app that dies a slow death and I have to shop around for a replacement again.

Been with NewtonMail for a long time. Back when it was cloud magic. Pretty freakin seamless. I have a multitude of personal and business accounts across platforms and it’s all integrated very smoothly. It’s allowed me to keep consistency and order in an otherwise complicated situation.
I also use Evernote and Wunderlist to keep track of almost everything. The ease at which I can archive, share, or add to a list quickly directly from inside NewtonMail has really streamlined my relationship with email.
Quick delete or spam buttons from the notification has really allowed me to live inbox zero. I never write reviews but these guys deserve it. I give it five stars.
Great App

by Mark - Sonos Long Time User
I recently switched back to Newton Mail after the company discontinued their service previously. I was reluctant to comeback cause I didn’t know if they would stick around.
I’m glad I chose to come back cause I haven’t found any email client for either iPhone or Mac with a clean interface as nice as Newton. I see many negative reviews, but I can’t understand why. I’m a power user and never have any major issues that would interrupt my workflow.
I decided to leave the review in hopes that users will give Newton a chance so they stick around much longer. I can honestly say Newton mail is by far the best mail app I’ve used and will continue to support them. Great job and I look forward to new features.
An app that charges $50/year should not be using my data to target me with ads.
“We may work with third-party social platforms, such as Facebook, to serve ads to you as part of a customized campaign”
It’s a shame because I used to love this product and would pay again in a heartbeat, if they stuck to their original policy: "All the information we collect from you is only used to give you the best possible experience using Newton. We don’t run ads inside the product or sell data to make money. We’ve built a good product and charge our users a subscription to run the business."
Getting better under new leadership

If you are new to Newton, be prepared for a unique take on email with features and ideas that I've not seen anywhere else. Simple, clean, robust, and willing to look outside the box.
Like many of you who have had Newton, I've been on the rollercoaster of loving this software while being frustrated by the rocky path it took, closing down twice.
Not only am I very pleased with the new leadership behing Newton, I'm thrilled with the next features they just dropped, particularly the email templates, but also creating sharing links and ways to track opens and clicks. These guys have been busy!
Best E-Mail Client & Support

I understand many negative reviews are being left by those who think the price is too high for the subscription. I used to be in the same mindset and tried just about every mail app worth trying that was available on NewtonMail Store before begrudgingly trying Newton and liking it enough to subscribe.
After a little over a year and using NewtonMail extensively on my iPhone as well as my Mac I can honestly say this is the best Mail app you can find. Feature rich, simple design, it just works and it works amazingly well. Just research how much it costs for add ons to GMail, for example, for the read receipts or send later functionality. It costs more than the cost of the Newton subscription - and those are just two features.
One last thing - Support. I understand you may not always need support, but when you do - I know when I do - it’s sometimes a pain to wait for an answer you need or would like to have right away. Newton’s support is unmatched! I can send an E-Mail at 11PM and get an answer LITERALLY within a 10 minute time frame. This isn’t just a one instance, I’ve emailed on numerous occasions with different questions and have always gotten answers within minutes - no matter the time or day.
If your hesitant - Just give it a try. NewtonMail is amazing and definitely worth the money. Especially if your an E-Mail power user.
Keep up the great work Newton Team - Thank You!!!
Newton is worth every penny and more!

UPDATE: Newton is back. Since my last review, Newton Mail got even better with supercharged features such as Tidy Inbox, Connected Apps, Read Receipts, Recap, Snooze. Latest version implements GIPHY support. All this while still providing a fast and powerful but clean simple GUI. And it still costs only 14 cents a day. — I recently learned about Newton as another excellent email app. I read some negative reviews from the early adopters, but I read many more positive reviews as well. What it boils down to is this. Newton is a cutting edge email app that does things better than every other app. I don't have a problem with their pricing model, and you shouldn't either. Many of us own expensive iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple Watches to use NewtonMail on, making our lives easier in managing the ever increasing email traffic. Folks, it only costs 14 cents a day! I say the benefits of NewtonMail is worth that price and much more.
Tried them all ......

What makes this the best is that it is simple yet powerful. I was using Airmail , which is a good app, but I felt overwhelmed by the all it’s options / features. I was also limited to Mac/IOS. Newton worked flawlessly for me over all of my platforms. Due to nature of my business, I have to utilize windows to remain mainstream at office, but i have all Apple products for home and mobile. Newton allows you to concentrate on what you want to do ( be productive ). You feel dialed in right away.... Is it worth 50$ a year to feel this way? Feeling in control is priceless! Then add the fact they respond quickly ( in minutes sometimes ) is a huge bonus....
The best email app for IOS / MacOS and I’ve tried a few...

Glad to see Newton is back. Was a customer last year before they shut down in Sep 2018. Tried several others since then: Spark, Airmail, Polymail. None was offering the smooth UI on both IOS and MacOS, reliability needed for business email, and all features of Newton: killer feature is definitely read receipts for each recipient separately and each time email is opened, and working also on a forwarded or replied message, but also: decent Newsletter and spam detection that also works when your Mac is not on to not flood your inbox and overwhelm with notifications, Snooze, Send Later etc. The only thing for which I still use Mac Mail is searching through emails. That is still not as good on Newton.
Great Mail App, Next best thing to Inbox

I, like many, mourned the passing of Google Inbox and found Newton in my grief. That was a year ago. I’ve used it for over a year now, and I’ve enjoyed it. I still miss Google Inbox from time to time but this is a very good replacement. The bundling is similar, not perfect, but does the job well.
The fact that I can use a single login to sign in to a device with all of my accounts is incredibly convenient. The signatures and settings are seamlessly synced across all my devices.
The $50 a year could be considered a bit much. And I could understand how a casual email user might think this is unreasonable. Spark or Airmail are similar but not the same and I don’t know how much I trust my data in their hands. I’m confident Newton does not do the same. It makes my life easier and for that I’d gladly pay $4 a month.
I consider myself a power user and Newton is my favorite not-so-secret weapon. NewtonMail has changed hands twice and the most recent owners seem to be actual users of NewtonMail so I’m looking forward to the updates they have in store!
Excellent. Speedy simplicity.

I love this application and it’s well worth the $2 a month for the read receipt function alone. Love how messages are truncated, presented, swipe options. Love the speed. Love how clean it looks without ads. Love search function. Emails refresh quickly without draining my iPhone 6s battery. Love the support and company Modus Operandi!
My Humble User Feedback Suggestions:
1 - Attachments. Right now you can only attach pictures and iCloud Drive docs when drafting an email within NewtonMail . Would be great to attach items from other apps (iBooks, Pinterest, etc)
2 - VIPs. Anyway to have a VIP function, similar to Mail? When I get an email from my boss, client, etc it’s in a special section, despite account. I link 4 email accounts on Nmail.
3 - Organizing. Haven’t figured out the simplest way to select a ton of different emails, and set up an auto filter for where they will go on receipt. I have to go to Gmail, iCloud or Exchange to set up rules which are then reflected in Nmail. Maybe there is a feature but it isn’t yet apparent.
All in all, great work and loving it so far. Thanks to an apparent team of hard workers there!
I don’t know about you all but...

Asking for $2/month for a service that is not even well integrated? It must be a joke. When I track an email, I want to be able to refer back to a repository that contains all the read email. Simply relying on a notification to let you know an email was read is not what I thought this was about. How about more stats on the number of times an email was open? Nothing revolutionary, and even offered by other free email providers, none of which I will cite here. I would pay zero dollars for NewtonMail, because it backs you into a corner without being fully encompassing. You still have to rely on other providers and that’s not what a paying service should be about.
My New Standard for Others to Live Up To

Newton got it right. At first, I thought it was just going to be another slide and file/copycat email app. But what I found was an intuitive, email workflow that was clearly more thought out. I needed something that would give me all the features of Gmail’s app, and my Cloze app that even they couldn’t give me in one cross-platform package. Newton does it all in a clean, minimal interface that keeps everything out of your way until you need it and is unlike any of the other apps I’ve used. I ended up subscribing because after the trial I realized that I wasn’t going to be able to live without it. That’s when you know NewtonMail is working for you. I look forward to continued development now that they have new owners. In the meantime I’m going to spread the Newton love.
So glad NewtonMail is back! 👏🏼 Even with not being updated much in the last year, NewtonMail is still hands down the best email app on NewtonMail Store! Ever since they announced the last shutdown, I’ve been cycling between most of the email apps on NewtonMail Store, but none of them handle email with the ease and simplicity of Newton! Newton has just the right balance of features (read receipts, customized actions, great syncing of preferences & read emails) while keeping a fast and minimal interface that allows you to sort through your email with speed. With the new owners stated intentions, I’m super excited to support NewtonMail’s development again! Looking forward to the upcoming updates! 😃
Good App but Bad pricing model

NewtonMail used to be 100% free, but it makes total sense that they need to charge money to stay in business, provide crucial updates, and introduce new features. I was all set to subscribe until I discovered they were asking $50 per year subscription fee. That was too large a jump for me. So I went with Airmail 3 which had the same set of features and a longer track record of trust.
As an early adopter, I felt incredibly burned when a forced update disabled my formerly favorite email tool and suddenly demanded $50 per year. No discount or concession was made to early adopters who helped spread this apps popularity via word of mouth and peer to peer demos. Instead it came across like a “thanks for supporting us for three years and now we’ll flip you the bird.”
I guarantee that not a single high rating is from a former Cloud Magic user (the apps former name). Objectively, CloudMagic becoming Newton is a fascinating case study that my friend, ,and PR professor, used often to teach students the principles of cognitive dissonance, brand trust, and “alienation without communication.”

Few things I’ve been waiting for over a year to be fixed
2024-11-17
by Drcjcarr
1) need to have a number somewhere on threads on main page to show how many emails are contained in the conversation 2) need ability to show more text on email notifications to Apple Watch. May be able to do this by reducing font size like outlook does 3) need to be able to show all of a message by default without having to scroll to bottom to request the full email that has been truncated. Really frustrating when you get to the bottom and then have to click that button that sends you to the beginning of a large email when you have already read 3/4 of the email. I thought this was supposed to speed up your email management??? 4) add ability to change text size throughout application so if you want smaller text you can see more emails on main screen 5) Sllllllow to load emails. Have to watch a circus of emails appear and then disappear if I did some work on gmail on the computer. Basically can see every move you made at a different location and can take forever to get caught up if you are a high volume email user
Fell instantly in love with Newton upon downloading nearly 2 years ago. It’s a light email app yet power packed with info and incredibly easy to set up across multiple devices. Should also note that I’ve personally never had any update bugs either! The annual subscription has been more than worth it for my employees and I since day one.
Update: Since NewtonMail re-released it has been great with a few changes that aren’t a huge dealbreaker.
On the other hand - It is long overdue for an update after the last major iPhone one. My experience with it has been a work place nightmare trying to finish a sentence before NewtonMail force closes, losing my message(s) - every single time. I highly recommend holding off until this awful bug is fixed.
Newton is a beautifully designed email app, make no mistake about it. All the fonts, colors, icons, spacing, etc. are perfectly chosen and very pleasing to the eye. It has wonderful functionality all around, and is a real pleasure to use… except for two major areas that bring my workflow to a screeching halt.
While it does offer a unified Inbox, it does NOT offer a unified view across all your email accounts for your Trash folder, Sent emails, Spam, etc. This might not seem like a big deal, until you have seven different email accounts you have to keep track of. Then you find yourself constantly swiping back and forth all day long going in and out of seven different email accounts just to have to look in all these different folders. It’s a nightmare! This is one thing Spark handles flawlessly. Sadly, this missing feature cripples Newton for me.
Newton also doesn’t provide the ability to eliminate certain email accounts from showing up in the unified Inbox. Again, this is crucial. My wife isn’t technically savvy, but she does need an email account, so I just keep an eye on her emails for her… but I do not want her emails clogging up my inbox. I just need them on my phone in her separate account. Unfortunately, Newton does not allow me to separate them out that way.
It’s a real shame! I thought I had found the perfect email app, but I guess I’ll have to keep looking. So close, but not close enough.
