4.2 out of 5
Every iteration seems buggier

I forced to write a not so great review because of how ZWO keeps pushing “must” updates which ends up bricking the this app scope many times . They push updates quite frequently and they seem to be making things worse than before. They are not adding anything the this app scope isn't getting any better ninjas no clue what they are doing and why.

Version 2.0 ruined this telescope!

I will admit this telescope was fantastic when I first purchased it and used the original app. After this update, it has been rendered useless. Seestar itself is less intuitive and powerful. I could easily find objects before, but now it can’t do something as simple as locate the moon. absolutely terrible.

Nice app but one major flaw in version 1.8.0.

Seestar is a great companion to the this app S50. It does a nice job helping you identify the object you want to view and then actually getting the S50 to that object. The major is that my iPhone 13 Pro Max continually fails in trying to connect to the this app S50. The workaround is to turn off cellular data in the this app app settings under the iPhone settings icon. At that point I believe you can control the S50, but then, you cannot access the Internet because the cellular data is turned off. In addition, it’s not easy to get a hold of their tech-support, nor the tech-support of the company from which I bought the S50. Hopefully ZWO will get this straightened out.

Excited about telescope: App needs work

Transitioning from a big complex setup we don’t have time to use, we’re excited about the this app and how it will satisfy our modest astrophotography goals.

BUT: Seestar lacks several features we hope show up in future development. We’ve been using Sky Safari Pro, which is packed with tools. If the this app ever integrated with SkySafari that would be amazing.

Here’s what we want for the this app App:

1. iPad optimization.
2. Observing lists: we like to poke around in our sky map in Sky Safari, and put things we find on a list for later.
3. Object information accessed directly from the sky atlas screen. “Ooh, what’s THAT?” We need a way to refer back to a catalogue of objects and information.

This would be a good start. Would love to also filter for types of objects in the sky atlas.

For now we’ll probably just use Sky Safari for listing, info and planning, and this app to drive the scope.

Neat gadget

When paired with the s50(only option?) it’s a cool app. Pleasantly surprised by how easy it is to find and acquire images. Though it needs to add some magnitude metric to help with object selection. It’s only a 50mm finder, but thinks it can see anything? Maybe even include a light pollution metric to help wasting time on targets you’ll never see. Would be 5 stars with full screen iPad support.

Great app for a fun scope

This is a really well put together app for a fun little scope that makes astrophotography accessible to anyone. My suggestions to improve Seestar further are 1) having the Compass Calibration prompt happen before leveling. 2) have a button to pull up more information about an object in the Sky Atlas. I’d like to be able to learn about something cool I find in the sky without having to go back and search for it.

A young application to control the Seestar S 50

This is a new product out late last year. New features are being added with each revision which are coming close to monthly apart. The users know this telescope is very capable of much much more than the current application provides, but we’re hopeful within a few months many well requested updatesand features are expected.

Please add native support for the iPad’s larger screen

Seestar runs fine but doesn’t take advantage of the iPad’s larger screen.

Can't go wrong!

Great scope to see the sky wonders easily and with essentially zero setup time. If you out grow it, it will been a great and inexpensive intro, and you can give it to a friend to start them., while you upgrade or retire from sky marveling.

NEEDS AUTO MOSAIC MODE!!

Seestar is getting really good. Just needs the auto mosaic mode due to the very small field of view of the sensor. Also if we can get auto save 50th .FIT file as JPEG. You guys are doing a great job.

Continuous shooting missing

What happen with the function! With this update suddenly disappeared. I haven’t update Seestar on my IPad. I checked and still there.

Such wonderful updates

The new Intelligent Denoiser is awesome. The new mosaic/framing works well enough. I love my S50 so much more with these updates. I have never had any problem firmware updates working correctly.

Seestar S50 is a fantastic product

Sometimes big surprises come in small packages. The ZWO this app is one of those pleasant surprises. I’m an experienced amateur astronomer and have or used many types of visual and photographic Astro gear. ZWO have really put together an award-worthy product with the S50. It combines the image quality of an Apochromatic objective and a decent imaging sensor along with application software that assists in navigation to find objects in the night sky and perform live image stacking to capture and display pictures that the human eye cannot see naked-eye. It is easy to setup and use even if you are not experienced in astronomical pursuits.

Like any technological tool the ZWO this app S50 has its shortfalls and limitations. The ZWO developers are enhancing Seestar to address the shortcomings and to add new functionality. There are several helpful user groups that provide tremendous support to the user community. It’s a fun way to spend time out under the night sky!

App just keeps getting better

Just set up my unit, had a few bugs that were going on and within the first three days all updates have been made to fix all known bugs, very attentive to the customer feedback great app !

Outstanding system with a caveat

UI is extremely easy to learn and use right out of the box. The main suggestion is to include some backlash compensation in software. System dithers scope pointing direction by several pixels to avoid developing pattern and walking noise every 5 frames. After many of the dithers, altitude tracking doesn’t immediately resume due to backlash in drive train. Up to 30% of the frames taken end up being thrown out adding to overhead. You might accumulate 10 min of stacked data for 25 min of collection. Hopefully ZWO will address the backlash. It’s not clear if all the copies of the S50 scope have this issue and to this extent, but many folks have discussed on Cloudy Nights. Backlash is the only complaint I have. Otherwise, a beautiful scope and excellent software.

Amazing app and device

Seestar and software is very well done allowing a wide range of things from moon and sun viewing and tracking, to deep space viewing, and even a beautiful scenery mode to capture live views of say mountains in the distance to animals or anything. The software features in Seestar coupled with the this app S50 makes it without a doubt an amazing device capable of amazing things.

Simply the best and easiest

I have had my S50 for one year. It is the most enjoyment I have ever had with any astronomy/astrophotography equipment I've purchase. I especially like the scenery mode that has allowed me to capture some impressive nature images. And with all the updates, they keep adding new and useful features. It just keeps getting better. Would highly recommend.

Excellent early version

this app hardware is just now moving g to early adopters. Rather than wait for development of full features ZWO has made Seestar available as a work in progress so that we can join the journey toward full features as early adopters.

Thank you for what you have conceived and implemented so far. It is outstanding work. I look forward to enjoying the this app as your team continues to refine and improve the software and firmware.

Pretty amazing app for a pretty amazing telescope

I bought the telescope last year and I haven’t used it as much as I’d like because of cloudy winter skies but so far I’m very pleased with both. The interface of Seestar is easy to learn, it has good tutorials built in, and I’m very impressed with the photos that the telescope has taken so far. I really don’t have any complaints at all although I’m looking forward to mosaic mode when they release it.

Amazing

The new features are amazing so easy to use. Before some pictures were okay and now there are great I love Seestar. Great work!
