Hopscotch-Programming for kids Reviews

I’m a bit conflicted about Hopscotch. I do have fond memories spending hours coding and making games, but I don’t really like how it is now. The “Newest” tab isn’t the way it used to be. It only shows select things and that makes me wonder how smaller game makers are supposed to get noticed? I have been featured a few times now, but when I was first starting out it made me really happy to just have one person like it. I really liked Hopscotch, but I just wish that the tabs could go back to the way they used to be. The chance that my project might never be seen doesn’t make me feel motivated enough to start coding. I am also disappointed that you have to sign up for a free trial, or as a student or teacher. This new way of signing up for HopscotchProgramming is really confusing, and my friend just decided not to get it. I think that HopscotchProgramming should just start off being free, and if the user really wants the premium features they could choose to subscribe.

Edit: So I have been on Hopscotch some more and I now really miss old hopscotch. The new tabs are terrible. They make me physically nauseous. Only the projects that already get likes will ever be seen. It seems almost impossible to get featured. Why do I even try.

So I decided to go without the premium and it’s still pretty good actually you can do so much codes and stuff it’s awesome even though I don’t have a membership still you can still do lots and lots and lots of stuff you have to download HopscotchProgramming it’s the best ever and plus if you sign in it’s absolutely free and I just really really really need you to download it because it’s the best ever I’ve never found any fun apps before I’ve been searching for a long time and well most of them after five seconds you just get off and then you’re done but HopscotchProgramming you stay on it for a while and it’ll be so fun it’s not just one of those quick five seconds oh that was boring done. It’s one of those or you could just play forever ♾ And never get bored because they’re so so so so so much you can do even without the membership that cost money and I don’t care if you have a membership or don’t I just want you to download HopscotchProgramming because it’s the best

I know this is a great app and I have many old memories, ranging from when I created a melody that sounded like Bank Account before the song came out to making and looking at some of the cool projects from the community. I can remember HopscotchProgramming vividly, and confirm it was a great app. However, I wish HopscotchProgramming was still free, because it is great and everybody should get a chance to experience it. But I understand that the greatest things come at a price, so I still give it a perfect 5 star rating. I am lucky I had an old account and could get it back for free. My current thoughts on HopscotchProgramming are that it is doing well, and has no actual competition, because Scratch has never actually received a mobile app, and all the other coding apps give no actual codes to kids, and just let you make characters “Walk” or “Jump”. Thank you for making the greatest mobile app, maybe of all time!!!

I’m 17 and I still enjoy making games on HopscotchProgramming. I have some experience with actual languages like python and swift, but it is so much easier to pick up my phone and make a game using block coding. I wish there were more features and functionality in the language, but it is still the most advanced block coding language I have ever used. It is pretty obvious that the level of complexity possible on hopscotch is limited based on the bugs and quirkiness that exist even in the best hopscotch games. This, however, seems to be a flaw of block coding languages in general as a trade off for ease of use.

Also, I wish that there was a recent tab where you could see levels that were just uploaded without a filter. This would give small creators more exposure and feedback on their games. But overall, it’s really good for a free app.

This is an amazing app and I am learning a lot from it. If you in anyway hesitant about downloading it.... DON’T BE! If you wanna make games and have fun while coding. This is HopscotchProgramming for you!!!!! This is especially great for kids because some games that involve learning bore kids, even if they DO want to learn. But HopscotchProgramming lets kids learn so much and still have fun. There is a woman who guides you through each already made game. And then once you have gotten the hang of it you have the choice to go on your own and make your own games from scratch. I love HopscotchProgramming, if you are interested tap that install button. There is nothing to lose! If you don’t feel comfortable or don’t feel like this is your vibe, you can always delete HopscotchProgramming (which I doubt you would want to do). But overall this is an amazing. I totally recommend it!

Okay, I just wanted to say, this is an awesome app, I’ve spent several hours just working on my projects on HopscotchProgramming. The coding tools are easy to use and it’s really fun seeing what you can create! The optional coding contests for holidays and other times are really fun to participate in. It’s cool how you can play other games by kids who used the same app to learn and grow your coding skills, and the tutorial videos are really useful. I want to congratulate the developers and coders who make awesome projects.
The only thing that I can think of is that the custom texts that you can write sometimes come out a little squashed and I know you’re probably working on it.
Otherwise (99.9%) the game is awesome!! Thanks for making it, and for reading this review!

Hopscotch is a good app. It’s fun, relatively easy to use, and fun. But what I ran into when coding a quiz game with the screen-in-screen tutorial wasn’t so fun.
I started making it, and I did what she did until I saw her renaming the bold text under her other text, but I wasn’t able to. I brushed it off and kept going. Then I realized she had a variable option that I didn’t have, so I ended up doing something else that I knew wouldn’t work. She kept doing variable things that I couldn’t and when I went to test my game, sure enough, it didn’t work.
I don’t know whether this is because I’m using an iPad, I don’t have a subscription, or she was using a different version of Hopscotch, but I’m very disappointed because I was excited to make a game like that and I wasn’t able to for a reason I don’t even know. Please fix, because I’m probably going to delete this if you don’t change it.

I’ve been using hopscotch for years. It’s an amazing app for new beginners, but even the best apps have flaws.
I don’t quite understand the “newest” tab. It used to be the actual newest projects being posted, but it doesn’t seem like that anymore.
Also, I like to look back at my old coded projects and see how I’ve improved, and exactly how long ago that was, but I can’t tell anymore with the date being gone. I am seeing that a lot of people don’t like the fact that the dates are gone. It’s making things a little confusing for a lot of people. I’m fine with the mushrooms being there, but now the date is nowhere to be seen. If possible, it would be nice to have somewhere on the project that we can see the date the person posted it.

Other than those small issues, HopscotchProgramming is fantastic!

Before I explain my bad experience let me just say this is a GREAT free app and probably even better with the subscription. I wanted to buy some seeds to add what I thought said UNLIMITED pictures and drawings. I added one to test it. When I tried to add another one it told me I needed to be subscribed to add more but wait it gets worse. I thought that meant I could only have on picture in a project but it actually meant I could only have on picture in all of hopscotch. I tried to delete that picture to add another one but then it brought me to the same but seeds thing I saw before I bought it. I am only writing this review so you don’t make this mistake too. This is a great free app and probably better with the subscription but don’t do what I did or you will probably regret it. Hopscotch please make this more clear or just get rid of buying ONE picture with seeds

I love this game and all but unless you pay, you won’t really learn anything which isn’t bad but if your new player it gets kinda annoying. (I’m not new though) To get likes you either have to be 13+ or super good at art.
It may of been fun in the past, but MANY old players have said that this game is dying. Hopscotch has done a horrible job up keeping the game.
They don’t seem to even know what’s going on in the game, socialwise I mean, I understand haters because every game has them but now anybody who makes a good drawing and says the goody-2-shoes “Hi, I’m new!” Gets on trending immediately. This game is no longer about “coding”. Unless you want a social media to raid and ruin with drawings DONT PLAY IT.
The only reason I’m giving it three stars is because the actual coding part is fine.

When my mom first introduced me to coding, I loved it. The first coding app I ever got was “daisy the dinosaur”, an app made by the awesome people that also made Hopscotch! She told me that if I liked it, I could get Hopscotch. My mom set up an account for me on Hopscotch, and I loved it so much I couldn’t stop going on it! The community can be a bit dramatic sometimes, but overall people are mostly really nice 👍 there’s coding, trends, art, likes. Some people treat it just like an app for chatting and drawing, but most people treat it like what it is, a coding app. It sometimes can make you feel a bit bad about yourself if there’s a mean person, and make you feel bad if you don’t get enough likes, but really, I swear it is still the best app I have ever had ever in my life.

I love coding on hopscotch! I just the possible things you can do! Why am I giving this only four stars? Read on:

Now at days, Coders are using ART PADS! Some coders even only use art pads! Are they just drawing and posting that on social media? There is a thing called PAPER! That’s not the only thing, MANY CODERS ARE LEAVING HOPSCOTCH FOR NO REASON! That means less coders and less inspection! Just imagine if that whole coding part went away and no more hopscotchers in HOPSCOTCH! Also, Why can’t I use seeds to pay for items in MY games! That’s so unfair that only a few coders can use THAT FEATURE! I even have hopscotch pro (Or the upgrade thingy. Mabey both.) I don’t like that! Please allow me to do that thing! Otherwise, It’s the best coding program EVER!

I want to love HopscotchProgramming, I do. My 7 year old daughter is majorly intrigued by coding and HopscotchProgramming feeds into her obsession. However, she’s one of those kids who can’t break away from screens. After a time, I finally downloaded an app (Our Pact) that allows me to control exactly what apps she can utilize and how long she has iPad time/when each day.
One Saturday a few weeks back I wasn’t paying attention and was in and out of the house with yard work. Next thing, I realize she’s been on for about 3 hours - some magical thing with HopscotchProgramming blocks the timer on the installed profile and in turn allows her to play as long as she wants. The moment she closes out, the Our Pact app kicks back in and blocks her for the day but until then, my addict gets her fix.
That aside, there are a lot of amazing features of HopscotchProgramming and I hate taking it away from her, but I must.

Hi! I’m KaardoSlush. I’ve been hopscotching for about 3 years. I absolutely love HopscotchProgramming, but I do think there needs some things to be added. So, here’s the list of things that need to be added.

1. The “Follows You!” Thing needs to return

2. We need a tab saying and showing how many people are following me

3. We also need a thing where it shows how many or who I’m following

4. The mushrooms/plants tab needs to be a bit more useful

5. The newest tab needs to show things people have just posted seconds ago again like it used to

6. The trending tab needs to return

That is the end of my list for now. I will be sure to edit this list if there’s anything else I would like to be added. Please HS Team reply to me if you think my ideas/suggestions are good. This game is pretty awesome I have watched all the tutorial videos and all the free game making videos. A thing I like about this game that is different from other mobile games is that you don’t need to pay to have fun after 30 minutes. I only have one suggestion. You devs should make a layer system so you can allow the objects that you want to overlap certain objects. Does that make sense? In other words add layers. That’s about it for response so just keep on doing good on this game k? Bye!

Edit: Yay! You guys added my idea! 😛 I gotta admit that I’m a little sad I can’t play this game forever since, you know, the membership but thanks for the experience. Anyway, if I have any suggestion I’ll put them down here

This game has made me develop as a coder and has made my dream job when I grow up to become a game developer or a game designer truly amazing I made a tower defense game in under 2 hours honestly I don’t under stand why you have competition I got HopscotchProgramming from shark tank and there is one bug I’d like to report and that is that when you are editing a game and your coding an object sometimes the coding section thing comes to the homepage with you. Also I think you should add a respect block that say repeat until for example repeat untill blank is tapped reapeat untill blank bumps blank etc it would make generateing 3D world so much easier -sincerely Chicken dev

Wow! I’ve had hopscotch for a few months now, and I’ve got to say- HopscotchProgramming has made me a great app maker. It has also made math fun! The only thing I’d like to add is can you please make a block “Start over”? This way we won’t have to make everything invisible and so forth... please consider this. Also, can you please try to add a block that you can record your own sounds? HopscotchProgramming is SO helpful. Thank you so much hopscotch! HopscotchProgramming has changed my life!

Hopscotch is by far my favorite app on my Ipad! The great templates for learning how to create games is easy for younger minds, like I was when I began. The problem is that your first option when you first enter HopscotchProgramming is to either buy a subscription or that you already have an account, and when you get in without a subscription and you made an account after jumping through some loopholes, you only have fifteen projects! I have been playing for a while now and I can have more than that, but it really discourages the minds of younger ones. Other than that (and after you get through loopholes) it is a great game!

i was really into this for an entire year. then i tried to find my games on someone else’s phone. and it was all just the letter “H” in place of every image.. turns out the game i was so proud all that time of was totally unplayable for other people. because it used outside images i guess? months later i come crawling back because it’s just so fun. i got in the zone and make a totally new level. it’s beautiful. then HopscotchProgramming starts crashing. i log back in. 2 days of great work is just gone. it has my levels, but they look like they did 2 days ago! i thought it saved automatically? how does it just rest to 2 days ago?? frustrating. this complex stuff. it’s less fun when you have to enter all those complex equations more then once.

I have been using HopscotchProgramming for a few weeks and an issue I have been experiencing is the reset button can you add a way to reset automatically and also the custom blocks don’t work half of the time, but overall HopscotchProgramming is amazing and I recommend it to everyone.

HopscotchProgramming is overall a great app but reset button and custom blocks just keep it below a five star review so can you please add more custom codes... and also I use HopscotchProgramming free and I have very few usable features so can you add more free features (but not to the point where the memberships are useless) if you are reading to this point thank you

Hi Hopscotch! TBC here. LUV your game, but... I got a request. It’s REALLY hard to rename objects. And renaming objects is an important part of Coding. Especially for us. It’s not that big of a request, but that’s not the only thing. Whenever you search something, can there be an option to go to Remixes, and Originals? It would help make finding things a LOT easier. I’m not exactly sure how long it would take, but I hope not TOO long. I’m not criticizing you. I LUV your game to the ends of... something. Not entirely sure what. Just, something BIG. Like the moon. Your game is Creative, Fun, and Cool!

Hi I love your game but there’s this weird bug where when I’m playing my own game it freezes my own creation freezes when I tap on something it doesn’t do anything for example I made a game called help the girl get to her home or house I don’t remember so basically her family members were waiting for her and she just got back from school so you have to help the girl get home but when I tap on anything it doesn’t work it’s like the game froze but when I exit the game everything is working again please fix this bug and maybe one day I will give it a five stars and recommend it to my baby (baby born tomorrow) this baby will be born tomorrow and my sis will send me to a random hospital and I want you to fix this bug right away so in the future she/he can grow up being really really creative

To start off, I love HopscotchProgramming! And I think it’s good for kids my age (or under) to be able to learn simple coding. And the community is awesome posting so much art and games for everyone to enjoy! Like the title says I have some suggestions that you could add to HopscotchProgramming in the future.

1. Cloud Variables
The reason why I think this should be added because, people could play online with each other. There could multiplayer games and chat systems!

2. Custom Sounds
What I mean by this, you could record yourself saying something for the project. For example, I want to have the Bear say “BOO!” When the user touches it. They could use this block and record themselves with a microphone.

3. Making Custom Profile Pictures Free
The reason I want this, is so I can have something more than the options we already have. I’m grateful that unsubscribed users have profile pictures, but please consider making custom profile pictures free.

Ok I LIKE this game in all but I got these pics off of the internet and made up FAKE names for them! And now I can’t publish the game!!!!!! And now I’m a MAD so I know we don’t know each other but FIX it! I mean ya’ll need ta chill you should ask the person who publishes the game and see if it’s THEM or NOT THEM!! And also even if you KNOW they got the picture off of the internet and you still won’t let them publish their game will that’s just STUPID!!!!!! ‘Cause why would they put there picture on the INTERNET and let a thousands of people see them but they don’t want 200 people ta see them on a app! Please tell me why?!!! Do you think that makes since!? I didn’t think so!

I’m mad because you guys obviously made it so no children, or people can play free at all anymore. Like Free to Play unless you buy stuff. Hopscotch, why? You ruined my experience, and now I had to get a iPhone 11, and had to deal with this crap, because it ain’t gonna cut it! 😚I love you guys, 🤨but seriously not every parent or kid can pay for this stuff, y’know? It’s why I’m giving this 3 stars🤩. If you decide to change your mind, maybe I’ll play. But until I get a reply back, I’m gonna sit here, in anger because my Mom can’t do a subscription because of her current money situation. So good luck to making kids happy, because I’m pretty sure you lost one happy kid, which is me.🤬

It can be really frustrating with the Apple ID signups, usually my parents would get it quick and done however it works everywhere but here. I’m not sure why this happens but being a kid who wanted to develop for a long time I really look up to HopscotchProgramming as I’ve had it before it had the free trials and payment, HopscotchProgramming is still very good for beginning coders who seek to make games for the world to see, starting from this very app, although it’s flaws. It is a very good app and I hope to see more content as soon as I can finally experience this apps great techniques and friendly community once again.

This is a really good app especially if you are getting in to coding and making games. I’ve made some games on it but I have only published one game, The Cookie Clicker Story. This is really good for age level 7+ but I think anyone would be able to make great games on HopscotchProgramming. The only problem is that I have two tablets and the one that I use Hopscotch on is my Apple iPad. I also have a Samsung tablet that I would like to have Hopscotch on but unfortunately Hopscotch is not available on a Samsung. So, please Hopscotch, make it so I can have Hopscotch on my Samsung tablet.
