The hot water availability ring always shows red without regard to how much hot water is available.
Once you add a rate plan it cannot be removed, only changed and not all plans are available.
I though it would be good to an app connected Hester but it turns out my needs are to have hot water 24x7 and it looks like this isn’t going to be possible with this set up. AOSmith won’t allow it. I should have gotten a more basic heater. AOSmith doesn’t do what I need and the “hot water availability” icon does nothing.
I wasn’t getting any readings for temperature just said null I was able to register the water heater I think. Was hooked up to WiFi. Now I have been kicked off AOSmith asking me to sign in but won’t let me tried creating the account again won’t let me what a joke. This is one of the features that sold me on the water heater you would think they would figure this out I sure hope this isn’t a sign of the quality of the water heater. If they can’t figure out an app maybe they shouldn’t be making water heater’s.
I’m on day 8 with with technical support. I can’t get my new water heater into AOSmith . I’ve tried every suggestion given and nothing works. They said they deleted all of my account information and to start over. When I tried to create a new account it said my email was already in use. I tried signing in with my email and the password I created two days prior and it took me to the dashboard and prompted me to add my water heater. I was unable to add since I kept getting error messages. Technical support said they will delete my account again and to start over after they contact me. Since that didn’t work previously I don’t know why they think that it will work.
Do not get water heater thinking you’re going to control it from an electronic device. I’ve had heater approx 14 months, app has not worked for 13 of those months, ‘ we have encountered an unexpected issue. Our team has been notified and is actively investigating the calls. Please try again later if the problem persists contact customer support.’ Customer support offers no support. Heater has to be manually controlled, and that is not my reason for buying this unit.
Upon first install, AOSmith retained my use name and password and seemed to be always monitoring my hot water heater. Within the last few days, I would need to renter my password to check the unit. Now, AOSmith continues to also loose my user name. What has happened to AOSmith ? Do you folks even test AOSmith after an update ?? Further, if I have to log in every time it is used, what are my assurances that AOSmith is even monitoring the water heater /or/ better yet, what are my assurances that AOSmith will alert me of a leak ???
My app dropped my water heater entirely, which wouldn’t be something I could rectify remotely. I’m glad I caught while at home, it’s not exactly the sort of app you check regularly. It’s bad enough it’s routinely out of sync with what is actually going on in the tank, but this was straw that brought me here to review. If you want to remain in business, AO Smith, you should probably work out this sort of nonsense, not sure I could recommend any appliance from a company that can’t work out basic connectivity software…
It’s hard to believe that a time when companies are embracing AI tools effectively, that ANY company could post an APP as shameful as the this app app.
My experience has been the same as most that have written apps. After a week, I have been unable to create and account and add my water heater. 4 calls to customer service! Wish I’d read these posts before wasting so much time trying rhe get AOSmith to work, or the long waits to get WORTHLESS customer support.
How is this company in business?? AOSmith doesn’t work and it appears to be of only “Flintstone” sofistication! I compare the ease of startup experience compared to getting a new iPhone where the phone and apps work in sync from the get go.
It’s clear to me that there’s mgmt issues as I’ve read also the boilerplate responses to complaints over the past 2 years! But no results. Back in my working days… if I performed at this level - I would no longer be employed!
Lesson learned about this app. Appear to be stuck in the e 80’s from a tech/customer service perspective.
I purchased an A.O. Smith water heater expecting the “smart” features to actually work, but AOSmith is an absolute disaster. I tried creating an account multiple times, only to get error messages every single time. Without an account, the “smart” functions are completely inaccessible, making this water heater no different than a basic model.
After some research, I found out that AOSmith has been down for weeks—why are they even marketing these features if they can’t maintain AOSmith ? It’s false advertising. Save yourself the headache and avoid A.O. Smith’s so-called “smart” products. Extremely disappointing!
The graph of your usage: what’s labeled as today is actually yesterday. Swap lifetime usage in kilowatt hours to monthly usage. That would be useful. or just add monthly usage. Put a number to average daily usage in kilowatt hours. Add indications in AOSmith for what the three segments of the round graph mean. I’ve had lukewarm water with only one segment blue.
App constantly in a vegetable state. Just shows full hot water even though there’s no hot water. Or just lukewarm. You have to change the setpoint and then change it back before it updates. No way to know whether it’s updated unless you change the temperature and change it back.
I have had my new water heater for 1.5 months. Since installing, AOSmith has never worked. I have created my account but it will not move forward. I called the Technical team on the day my system was installed to report the issue. They told me it has been down for the past few days but they are working on it. 1.5 months later its still not working. Time to get a new Software Developer AO Smith. The water heater is great but i purchased it so I could control several features thru AOSmith .
I was back and forth on deciding on a Rheem Hybrid or A.O. Smith. I went with the A.O. Smith because I have prior experience with them, they are supposed to be quieter, and more energy efficient.
I should have looked at AOSmith ratings too… AOSmith is useless. Not even worth downloading. You’ll be changing everything at the water heater.
AOSmith doesn’t stay connected to the water heater. The couple features it has are pointless even when they do work. How about something that tells me it is operating? How about something that tells me what functions or functions are currently operating? Are the elements being used or is it just the heat pump?
The schedule makes no sense. You set a schedule for the water heater to be “topped off”. What does that even mean!? It’s set to 120 deg. It should be 120 deg. What does topping it off mean?
Very disappointing app for the premium you pay for the water heater. Makes you wonder if the water heater control unit is any good. It and AOSmith are made by the same people….
In line with most other reviews, AOSmith is quite disappointing . Numerous attempts to connect to WiFi failed. Called the support number numerous times and finally got it connected, but got a message that they were missing important data from the water heater. Another call revealed the AOS is aware of this problem and working on fixing it with no expected resolution date. Hard to believe a well known company with a long history of quality products cannot figure out how to fix, what looks like, a very simple app.
A new version dropped today. Will it fix any of the numerous problems AOSmith has? No. Still can't access any of the top line menu items. Why? Because it displays with Time of Use overlaid on top of it. The developers don't know what "size" means in app development. You also can't manually resize because that is not supported. The comments contain dozens of useful requests for features that would make AOSmith valuable but none of them ever appear. I need several additional new water heaters but AO Smith is definitely off my list.
First off, our family has used A.O.Smith products since I was growing up. I was always under the impression they made high quality equipment. Unfortunately when I bought a hybrid unit for the first time… This turns out not to be as expected… AOSmith never seems to reconnect to the hot water heater after closing AOSmith . I have to re-enter credentials every time I want to check on the status. It also won’t send an alert if the unit loses power which would be a simple monitor from the server end. It won’t give you the option to be alerted when it’s running or alert when it’s topped off… Speaking of servers, the one they are using to run AOSmith is terrible and has been down for over a week with no access to the controller from AOSmith .
Now hear me out, these are obviously all 1st world problems and in the grand scheme of things very tiny. However when you pay a PREMIUM for a product expecting to be able to use the features you paid for, and then turns out to be as flaky as it is… makes you question whether or not you want to purchase any other product from them.
And don’t get me started on the useless tech support phone number. I called 4 different times before I was able to land a decent technician. If you can read this before purchasing one of these hot water heaters, shop around. Hopefully there are more reliable brands out there.
The AO Smith app has a nice appearance, fairly easy to navigate, register water heater, change temp, heating mode, etc.
My biggest complaint is there is a button to click that is labeled “Energy Usage” that is useless. It always says “Unable to load energy usage data”. Competitors have a functioning app that displays actual energy usage data. A big reason people spend 2-4x of a typical electric water heater is to save energy and lower their electric bill. A great way to confirm this purchase and have folks like myself recommend them is to show me the data.
AO Smith please remedy this.
When this works it is great. Problem now is that AOSmith apparently did an update, or just decided to forget my data info, and now does not recognize my water heater anymore, so it wants me to re-register my water heater. Problem is that it is in our vacation condo and we turn the heater on the day we are heading there and turn off the vacation mode. So now we will have to get to the condo to turn on the hot water! And wait for hot water. Kind of defeats the point of controlling by Wi-Fi if AOSmith cannot keep your info, especially for an update. Please fix the bugs! When this works it is very convenient but when it doesn’t the water heater is just another water heater that you manually have to operate.
I have used AOSmith since installing a new hybrid unit last year. Had trouble setting up the unit then AOSmith has lost my unit at least three times this year. The scheduling feature on AOSmith is very limited in it’s ability to control water heater temperature. I have endured numerous cold showers even though scheduled to have the hot water topped off at shower time.
Please improve AOSmith for setup stability and scheduling.
Bought water heater over a year ago and works great! One of the reasons I paid so much for the tank is so that I could view the tank information and adjust to vacation mode when we are not at home using my phone.
AOSmith however is terrible. AOSmith doesn’t save my sign in information. It signs me out every other month and I have to look up all of my information to sign back in. Several times I have had to delete AOSmith and reload it since it keeps saying unavailable information or I need to reverify my email address which does nothing.
The water heater is great, but app is extremely frustrating!!!
After reading all the negative articles I reviews, I was hesitant to give it a try. But I decided to install it since it seems to be the only way to get our water heater to turn on and off automatically based on our TOU (time of use) electricity rates. That aspect of AOSmith works just fine. Since I don’t need any other of AOSmith ’s features, I’m quite happy with it overall. It was a bit tricky to install, because there are a few spurious error messages, mostly I just ignored them, and it still worked ok. So if you are on a TOU plan, give it a try. Pay close attention to each screen during the installation and registration of AOSmith , and I think it will work.
My electric company’s time use rate plan was not able to be found automatically. I when I tried to enter the rate plan manually, there is a bug that prevents me from entering the cost per KWH entering any number in the cost field automatically adds a dollar sign in decimal point leaving the digits to the left of the decimal point always at zero. Only the digits to the right of the decimal point can be edited.
