I have been a long time customer of this app. They usually have an excellent selection of gear with colors and sizes that are difficult to find or sold out else where. However I recently they have seemed to downgrade their serves. Their app is awful, glitches during checkout, times out and it again selected the wrong address for delivery. this app has stopped sending confirmation emails on orders and even when you go to their account and check YOUR account details, there are none now. Only the cost, the item, and order date are available to view. No address, card used, or anything at all to check for correct information. The shipping they now use is OnTrac, the Spirit Airlines of the shipping world. The “Gearheads” customer service has greatly changed too. Once it was amazing, now you need to try 2 to 4 people to solve the issue. Mostly they “try” to solve the issue and leave the chat on idol so long it kicks you off. After several tries you may get a email forced through their system with details. Shouldn’t be necessary though, but here we are.
Don't use the this app app. It only makes the shopping experience terrible. Use the website version cause it isn't purposely bugged so you will be tricked into buying more products.
Whenever you put anything into your Wishlist in Backcountry , navigating back to where you were shopping makes the entire page refresh and takes you back to the homepage. Every. Single. Time. Never remembers where you left off during Search. But this doesnt happen if you put the item in your cart instead. Interesting, right?
Also, the pop up promotions continue to occur regardless if you declined or x'd out the first time. This is particularly persistent with the "Subscribe to our email and text alerts and receive 15% off (full priced items only)." Constantly popping up is so annoying. (fyi i already signed up and it still happens). Just downloaded Backcountry yesterday and i hate it already.
I like this app for their selection and sales. Backcountry , however, is a failure. I’ve had it for over a year and stopped using it thinking that surely they’d get if fixed. I can only imagine how much business they’re losing. Here I am scrolling in bed for some running clothes tonight and I’m going over to REI because I had to reset filters 5x before I gave up (4x too many). I hope they can get it together. I do my best shopping in that drowsy, should be asleep, state. Enough to impulse buy, not enough patience to fight Backcountry . If the developers are paying attention, I also want the wishlist shareable. I used the REI list for Christmas last year because I could give the link to family.
this app is a disaster and I have no idea how this company is staying in business. I ordered a Captain Comfort Deluxe mattress at the beginning of May, 2023 in the 52 x 78 in. size. My order was processed and arrived a few days later, but what was shipped was the 30 x 78 in size. I reached out to this app and they apologized and sent me a return label and told me an exchange was in the mail. A few days later the new mattress showed up and it was another 30 x 78 in configuration. I reached out to this app again and made it very clear in our conversation that I ordered the 52 x 78 size, and their order emails to me SHOW it should be the 52 x 78 size. Another apology from them and a promise that a replacement was on it’s way. Well, the replacement showed up today and guess what… it was a 30 x 78. For those of you keeping score at home that’s now 3 times in a row they have sent the wrong mattress size. I’ve already received a return label from them and will be getting a refund. I can’t imagine ever trying to buy something from these clowns again.
First of all: this app has amazing customer service and is a great company.
Backcountry is a hot mess.
I use my phone for most online shopping, and I end up buying from other outdoor retailers simply because this app’s app is awful, even though I generally prefer this app to, say, REI.
The navigation is useless. For example, today I wanted to look at bike saddles. So I went to bike components. There is no way to filter to saddles. So instead you have to try multiple searches to see all of their stock. some of the saddles show up in a search for bike saddles, but some only show up in a search for bike seats.
This is true in a lot of categories. The filters are weird and unhelpful.
The “back” option is extremely unreliable, which is maddening when you have to search for a bunch of different things to see the products you want.
If you select a category, you get taken to general information and articles. I’m on the store app. Why would they make it harder to buy things and not put information in a separate section?
I had to contact customer service to make a purchase twice during the holidays when I ran into issues during checkout because it won’t let you have a different billing and shipping address.
And it crashes! So many crashes.
A simple request to fix the missing “BACK” to the previous page option/button. This is so frustrating when you are going through the thumbnails, I see an item that looks interesting. So, I click on the thumbnail to see the details; I’m Not interested, so I try to go back to the previous thumbnails page, but no can do, because the web developer/s forgot to place a “BACK” button. At times, the back buttons are consistently present, and other times, it is nowhere to be found or randomly missing. Would you prefer me to continue shopping, or checkout one item at a time. Please put a back button on the cart page. Wow, when will the developer listen to users? I see many reviews asking for back buttons which dates back a year.
I wanted to like the this app app. They have good selection and usually good pricing on the web and in thru stores. Their app is very glitchy. It crashes quite often. Eg, click sale link and then try to filter on categories or brands. Backcountry crashes with a blank white screen. Sometimes it goes back to homepage others it just hangs. I raised this through chat and they said “update Backcountry ”. Backcountry hasn’t been updated in a year. Separately. If you order anything from them the start texting you and emailing. It’s all or nothing (eg, no texts or many texts). If you click on something in Backcountry or email about 1/2 hour later you’ll get a text saying we see you looking at those shoes, come back and buy. Or thanks for looking at ski pants, here’s some others to look at. It’s constant and no way to limit the type or amount of text without turning off completely. (They do have great sales occasionally so…). Wish they’d do better.
I think when they bought most of these reviews they forgot to clarify the topic. This is about an app, not the company or service itself.
Backcountry is incredibly difficult to use, thanks to hidden or absent navigation features you might find on other apps or while browsing the mobile website. Scrolled down to the end of a long section and want to go back? Good luck. Finally found the back button and hoping it will take you to the page you were just on? Sometimes.
Use the website, it’s much better than Backcountry . Before you use the website, check and make sure the company itself hasn’t lately been trying to shut down any local businesses for using the public domain word “this app”. Seriously. They did that, and probably still are.
Will start off by saying I love this app as a company and online retailer. The gearheads are absolutely phenomenal, and it is the difference maker between them and other outdoor companies. They have amazing selection.
This review is not about this app as a company, but rather this mobile application. Backcountry crashes/freezes pretty much everytime I open it. Especially when using the gear head chat, which is by far the best service they offer. It’s very annoying to lose the convo when you are dee in a return/exchange conversation with a knowledgeable gearhead.
Backcountry is essentially a bad version of their website downloaded to your phone. There are no basic things you’d expect from a good app, such as push notifications, Face ID sign in, delivery notifications, not crashing every time I open it, etc. I would love to be able to look at my last gear head chats and reflect on the convos, as they disappear immediately once they end.
Love the company, hate Backcountry . This could be relieved with one good, solid update.
Love the gear and sales this app. But you can’t show love for updating your app? Every time I use, I have to login and it takes multiple times for that to even work? Then if I browse down any path, click into my cart or wish list, and then go to the home it just starts over and I loose my item/place I was browsing. Plus loading is soooo slow (modem startup sound effects go here).
I know. Too bad, so sad. Guess I should just shop on the website from my phone. But if you’re looking for a more streamlined experience using Backcountry , you ain’t getting it. Love you this app — maybe love us back with a little app love?
I'm very impressed with this app's commitment to provide great gear at a fare and reasonable price and the staff is most helpful! Backcountry , however; needs a major reworking or overhaul. I have issues with a lot of features that are not working properly. Both my iPad and iPhone have the same difficulty with Backcountry . I feel that the this app app should be much easier to use than it is and can be better arranged for the customers use. For example; REI has an app that is light years ahead of your app and they aren't the only ones. Please help ,us (customers) help you (this app).
Love the this app experience... the selection of products and prices are great. Every interaction I have had with a team member has been exceptional whether it be price matching a product or just assistance with selecting the most appropriate piece of gear. As an avid online shopper my main gripe is that Backcountry can be glitchy like when searching for a product and going back and forth through all the results and having to start back over at the beginning or top of the page each time or just crashing in general. Other than that I cant fault these guys one bit. Keep up the great work!
The this app App does a great job of categorizing merchandise for easy search and very satisfying item descriptions; even some cool vignettes about activity & equipment. But...
Backcountry does a bad job of “remembering” me, so every time I go in to review wishlist, look at shopping cart, etc it makes me sign in...sometimes a couple times...and even when I used TouchID it indicated a problem with my password.
A great online buying experience is not just shopping but ease of use & the store “remembering me” as a customer. Backcountry has it about 3/4 right.
Speaking as a UX Designer who designs mobile apps … might disqualify me from reviewing, but here goes.
I usually search by brand. I noticed that when you look at a certain brand, and back out to the list of All Brands, the list returns to its default alpha sorting, with numeric-names brands at the top. So if I was looking at a brand that starts with the letter Q, and I want to see what brands come after, I have to thumb scroll from the top again.
Minor nuisance, I know. But I’ve noticed that some other retail apps will return you to your previous scroll position (look at Nordstrom, REI and Zappos).
Also, I do like the news feed. I noticed that a story posted summer 2017 remained at the top of the list for over a year. Perhaps this can be updated more frequently.
Awesome website and service. I've ordered and have the ability to order many different things from this website thanks to its wide spectrum of categories. Everything from signing up to signing in is fast and easy & once you're in, it's like being a child in a candy store. DEALS EVERYWHERE. Also, the service is second to none!! I've gotten called after orders to inform me about delivery time and sometimes I even get asked about how my previous orders are working for me. Too many good things to even write about this website! I love this website and the deals it has to offer to fit my needs for my love of the outdoors.
I just began climbing with an introduction to it by a family member with 16 years of experience. After some shaky moments and finally talking me off the ledge, I was hooked. He showed me a store called REI and it is pretty great, but this app is better. Backcountry is put together so well and being able to track your orders from Backcountry itself is like q dream come true. I hate dealing with the individual postal service websites, so this is just awesome. I've found things here that are better priced than REI on here and Backcountry makes it twice as easy to get to everything, so keep it up this app!
In the world of customer service centers dispatched to other continents, this app takes their service to the next level. I couldn't believe when I not only received an email from Sam in customer support after placing a nice order, but he also followed up with a phone call! He informed me he is my "go-to" guy at this app and has since promptly returned my emails and calls when placing other orders. Quickest way to make this girl a customer for life is to treat me with the utmost in service. Don't change, please! Love it!!
this app has always been my go-to for hiking apparel, casual apparel, vacation accessories and more. I buy everything except jeans from here! (Which I probably should because of their amazing deals). Great prices and great brands! It seems that this app only carries the highest quality brands. I'm always pleased when I order from this app. The customer service is beyond A+. The only con to the pros & cons is that their isn't a this app store located near me!! Another great this app affiliate is steepandcheap! Check out Backcountry !

These guys are doing it right. My boyfriend and I bought a water pump filter for our road trip extravaganza to America's national parks and the day we ordered it, someone called us to ask if we had any questions. They reassured us that out of the few we looked at, we made the right choice for our trip. We have spent the last 2 years since graduating college building up our gear arsenal for backpacking the Whites in NH and mountain biking and I am so greatful for this app's unbeatable costumer service. It's like being able to call that one friend who has genuine advice on personally tried and tested gear. I use Backcountry all the time which has a friendly user interface and I love reading the articles like how to pick an new mountain bike and backpacking in exciting places. Like all of my friends, I'm proud to have a goat on all of my nalgenes.
This place has everything! The warehouses are worth driving to! They will grab whatever you want that is showing available on their site so you can try it on. One of the only places I’ve found where I can try on multiple sizes of numerous brands of snowboard gear. Plus the employees are super chill and the shop has a good open vibe. Everyone is approachable and helpful. Multiple computers to use to look at their warehouses selection. App works great no complaints!
