Plot doesn’t make sense; supposed to be a continuation of the original game (which the developers abandoned, with barely a word EXCEPT on Reddit, for this new amazing cash-grab of a sequel) but plot lines are pulled out of thin air, don’t make sense, and disregard the continuity from the original game. Not to mention, characters developments are either ignored, at a standstill, or regressed back to their one-note selves.
That’s not to say Obey Me the original didn’t have its share of problems, especially regarding the levity in plot/characters. Nevertheless, Obey Me Nightbringer doesn’t deliver on its promises and barely offers anything new; It’s just a bad copy of its predecessor, that claims to be “different, but better~”.
For a sequel game that prides itself on being better than ever, not at all like its predecessor, with MORE PLOT, its darker, nitty-gritty shift in tone, as well as answers to the numerous questions you had in the original game, there’s little to no effort of the sort. Sure, there’s some of the aforementioned stuff I listed above, although crumbs of it is sprinkled here and there in the storyline, with teases of something GREAT about to happen, only with no follow-through or “To be continued~ maybe in the next chapter(s)~ ;D ”.
For a spin-off game featuring demons, it’s still the same old, happy-go-lucky stuff and family/friends shenanigans you’d seen in the original. I kid you not, there was an entire lesson (about 7 or so chapters) dragging on about finding and catching…a snake. Yay, plot~ In addition, (without revealing any spoilers) that whole hostility between Barbatos and Solomon was entirely anticlimactic to say the least; I’ll give the game developers credit, it wasn’t the dumb and likely answer I (we all) expected, but still a dumb answer nonetheless. Why market and create a game about demons if they barely act like demons? With the lightheartedness you see, you might as well have the game centered in the ⭐️Celestial Realm⭐️ with angels featured instead, with all the silly mischief they get into.
Ruri Tunes is not for the casual, no thumb-coordination player. Sure, the developers decided to “graciously” lower the difficulty settings (after at least half of year has already gone by since the game launched!), but not that much, especially when high enough scores are super NECESSARY to advance forward with the Obey Me story.
Also, for a music driven game, Ruri Tunes STILL doesn’t have the music rhythm and beat match with game buttons. However, I could put all that aside, if it wasn’t for default color palette where it’s so god-awful f-ing bright, that staring directly into the sun would be better for your eyes. God forbid you need to exit out mid-game for whatever reason (mainly because the game decides to lag then and there tee-hee :D and messes up with your combo score) and reopen the app to continue on without losing your game progress, only for it to go back to the default, turned ALL THE WAY UP to the max brightness setting!
The game text chats are given out of order, with a character going, “Hey, I found my socks” to a later chat arriving from that character saying, “Did you see my socks? I can’t find them”. The text answers (you the player can choose) have no variation as opposed to the original game. For instance, if a character goes, “What’s your favorite color?” You can pick, “Red” or “Blue” but the character says, “That’s a good one.” regardless of whatever option you pick. The two/ three different game options all lead to the same answer from the character(s) in the end, so it only offers the illusion of choice and the developers might as well not put different chat options for us players to “pick”.
But, hey, if you love TikTok, get ready for the Obey Me Nightbringer’s version of it, with its creepy character art and its janky motions. You’d get to watch (selfie) videos the characters posted up and spy on characters hanging out in Human MC’s devildom room, doing Tai Chi, sleeping on their bed, and the like. (I know it’s to save time/energy/money on animating different game backgrounds and game-wise the characters feel a sort of bond~ tied to that room, but it’s still weird to have ALL the characters hanging in Human MC’s room. You couldn’t have them in the brothers’ living room or something?! Even characters who don’t live there are randomly sleeping and playing soccer there…) At least it’s something new to the table and character voiced, so I’ll give them that.
The last straw for me was the intrusive ads. Aside from the huge, ugly ad taking up unnecessary space on the character home screen, the biggest issue was the 10 game ads you watch for AP/ energy—the long 45-60 seconds irritating unmuted ones. Before, I was able to watch the ads that came on were the silent ones (without volume or videos playing) and/or ones I could mute without any problems, AND have a tv show (PIP) or music on simultaneously.
Now, I can’t even do that without tons of long invasive game ads constantly pausing my show/music (even in silent phone mode and the ads’ sound still muted), and me unpausing it means the game ads can’t continue. And yes, turning off/ restarting the phone, deleting/ reinstalling the game app, and force closing/ opening back up the game doesn’t solve anything. Why don’t I just let the ads play without a tv show/music on? Because I shouldn’t have to/ don’t want to, all the ads take (at most) 10 minutes in all to finish, and other phone apps let me play music/ shows and ads simultaneously, so why is this game the only exception?
In short, Nightbringer was an “interesting game, but not a very fun one. Wanted to quit playing it sooner, but was hoping for more variety/answers to the plot and characters and hate ending a game without completing it.
