Don’t buy this water heater.

It would be a good water heater if it didn’t need an app to operate. EcoNet has bugs, always has, and probably always will.
My wife gets a little careless with wet clothes and she slung a couple drops of water at the water heater again. The water sensor activated and the unit is in a faulted state. I never received a notification via EcoNet . And it is not giving me an override option. It will not make hot water until EcoNet allows me to override the fault. Clearing the alarm on the unit does stop the beeping for a moment, but then it shuts down and starts beeping again.
I called this app to have my concerns addressed only to be informed I would have to call back on Monday for troubleshooting. Cool, no hot water for me tonight? I don’t need troubleshooting. I need a better designed water heater. I would put the solution in here, but it’s all about the money. I paid too much for this problem I have.

Why does this app not notify me when water is detected? Why is the energy saving suggestion covering the temp adjust dial? Why does the software hijack control of my water heater? Why has this failed to stay on schedule 6 times in 2 years? It stays with a P and ends with an S!

Poor Software.

Not ready for prime time

I keep telling EcoNet that I am away and the next day it shows that I am home. Vacation setting is still problematic. EcoNet needs some work to be worthwhile. If these complaints are user error then show a user guide or issue informational or error messages informing the user about how to correctly interact with EcoNet . The user interface is not user friendly and far from being intuitive.

Water heater does not follow schedule in app

The water heater constantly ignores the schedule you put in EcoNet . My wife will complain that her shower is cold, and when I review EcoNet it is set to the coldest setting. Typically when I open the schedule and re-save it then it begins to follow the schedule again. This time, I have tried that and it will not follow the schedule at all. It also will not allow me to even adjust the temperature. Every time I do now, it just goes back to 110 degrees. I paid A LOT of money for this water heater. I expected a lot more out of it…

Simply does not work

We’ve had EcoNet and the water heater for over a year now, but since EcoNet was “upgraded”, it simply does not work.
If I try to change the temperature setting, it will wait several seconds and then switch back. If I change the mode, it will close the menu and entirely ignore what I selected.
The schedule is also completely ignored — we’ve tried changing to something like 120* at “high demand”, but it will stay at 115* on energy saver with the label that it is “following the schedule”.

I’ve tried calling support, but they can’t do anything about the fact that the developers seem to have released this without testing it at all.
I appreciate they want to make EcoNet look nice, but to quote a phone support person, “please try again.”

Not Worth Installing

EcoNet is so buggy it’s useless. It doesn’t seem to know the actual state of my water heater: If I set vacation mode I can’t tell if it worked and end up going down there to make sure (which defeats the point). As a result I don’t trust the scheduling of vacations either. On top of that, it’s “fullness” measurement is a joke. If I turn on the shower it goes from 100% capacity to 40% capacity within minutes, then soon shows empty even though I have plenty of hot water left. Total crapware.

Missed Opportunity

EcoNet is too basic and not intuitive to use. There is no manual - what is posted on Rheem's website is marketing blurb only. I'm using EcoNet for their new ProTerra Heat Pump water heater. EcoNet needs serious improvements. I recommend that Rheem collects end-user input to turn this into a differentiator for the brand. I'm hoping to soon see an improved version.

App keeps disconnecting

Have had EcoNet disconnect twice in two days. I have to reconnect but when this happens I loose all my usage history. Please find a way for me to keep my usage history and my schedule even if EcoNet disconnects from my wifi. Very frustrating to have to rebuild my schedule twice in two days.

App doesn’t work

I downloaded EcoNet and connected it to my thermostat. When I tried to access the schedule I set, EcoNet keeps saying an error has occurred. It seems EcoNet has multiple names and I downloaded the other ones using the same login info. All the apps are the same and none of them work.

Doesn’t work

Doesn’t work at all. First it tells me i’m on away mode, i was not. Then reopened EcoNet and it’s saying “disabled” but it’s working fine.
Got this because i thought it would be nice to control the heater with my phone but it’s full of problems. I have 2 apps for it, neither works.

Bugs bugs bugs

The water heater doesn’t adjust for DST, and no way to fix it from EcoNet . I had a schedule but it randomly reset with no warning, wiping out the schedule completely and now it won’t accept any schedule. Now my water is not hot enough. EcoNet is hard to use and doesn’t save changes after you make them. The vacation feature took 10 minutes to figure out something so simple. Would be better to have no app than to put up with this junk.

App Issues

Geofencing is unreliable. It will notify me when I’ve left the geofence and it’s entering “Away” mode, but when I check on the water heater later in the day it will be back in “Home” mode and actively maintaining temperature. This is frustrating because I am often out of my house for days and would love for these cost saving features to work, considering it’s the primary reason I bought this WiFi-enabled model.

As of a few days ago, it enters vacation mode on its own while I am at the house. This continues to happen after I have repeatedly turned up the temperature, even on the water heater keypad and locked the keypad and disabled geofencing in case that was causing the issues. Still happening.

I’m going to disable/delete my this app account in hopes it will act like a normal water heater for now, even though EcoNet and its features is the primary reason I bought this unit..

Good luck getting this app to work

Firstly the Rheem Gladiator water heater was a huge waste of money. Forget the warranty. If you don’t have someone that can’t fix your water heater for $150 it’s coming out of your pocket. Including the power board that failed completely after 1 year and 1 month that was faulty to begin with. $500 to diagnose that the water heater is total crap and replace the power board and pay $30 for expedited shipping of a part so we didn’t freeze in the winter. What’s worse than this water heater?… EcoNet. Takes 3 customer service calls, 23 attempts and weeks later. And when it disconnects you get to do it all over again.

NO CONTROL of device, does not work!

Wi-Fi unreliable! Excellent signal, but drops connection, will not run on schedule. Simply put, cannot control the Heat Pump water heater. The only item that does work is the temperature setting and tells you energy consumed. Nothing else works. You can set to Heat Pump, Off, and Vacation, but runs the same, using the resistive element ALL THE TIME. The water heater is becoming very expensive to run! Deceptive Advertising is what comes to mind. Saying one thing, but doing something else without you knowing. Rheem is a billion $$$$ company, either they are incredibly incompetent, or they are deceiving customer with illegal operation.

Provides nothing expected of a modern thermostat app

EcoNet is a great disappointment. Basically the only feature provided to the home owner is the ability to temporarily change the thermostat temperature setting or place the unit in vacation mode. All other features offered by smart thermostats such as intelligent management based upon actual use in the home are missing. EcoNet seems primarily designed to send notifications of sales and drive me back to the installer. The thermostat it connects to is also disappointing. It provides ever modern feature my thermostats have had for 30 years to manage my energy consumption: a 7 day fixed timed schedule. But little for me to gain insight or reduce my costs as other market offerings.

Completely useless

There’s nothing about EcoNet that actually works. You can’t change any settings whatsoever. When you try it just changes right back to the previous setting. You have to enter all settings at the unit only, and then EcoNet will reflect that change. At first when I would change a setting at the unit, EcoNet would sometimes override it and change it back too but I was able to resolve that problem. So now I just have set the heater manually at the unit and trust that it stays on the setting I put it on.
In other words, this entire heater is now less reliable than one that was half the price!
Stay away

EcoNet thermostat app

I’ve changed my router and unable to connect to your app. I’ve called several times to your customer service and no help. I’ve called my internet supplier and everything is working on that end. I have no other problems with any other apps I can connect with all of them on the WiFi update/ upgrade that had to be done. If someone can fix this issue on your end or maybe the thermostat needs to update too is very much appreciated. For someone reason it doesn’t ask me to put my WiFi password which is on my end. Thank you

Erratic performance

Lack of consistency in operational performance is the constant. WHEN it works, it is GREAT and very convenient instrument to control water temperature. Often, it does NOT function properly. Set a higher temp and a few seconds later it changes itself back to the previous temp. Change the time in the schedule, save it, change is shown but go back a few minutes later and it reverts to the previous setting. ( Nothing like setting the temp for an early hot shower before going to bed only to discover little to no hot 💦 in the morning!) Not to mention that the “high demand “ mode which shows BOTH electric and heat pump working ACTUALLY is SLOWER to heat water than the sole “electric” setting. EcoNet HAS THE ABILITY TO BE GREAT BUT NEEDS PERFORMANCE TWEAKING (now would be nice).

Calendar Date Options for Usage Reporting

EcoNet has recently changed from a monthly calendar date format to a 30 day window for energy usage reporting. There is no reason in this current day of analytical data collecting that a customer should not be able to run a report on usage with dynamic start and end dates. The day, week, month and year options are nice, but EcoNet needs just a bit more effort. Please update EcoNet with the option to report energy use with the ability to choose a start and end date, in addition to the currently available options.

Geofencing Distance NOT Respected

Geofence setting does not work. Had it set first to 5 miles, then 10 miles, but still, all you have to do is pull out of your driveway and your system goes into away mode. This is WORTHLESS, especially during the hot Summer months when running a quick errand SHOULD NOT put your system into away mode.

Note: I previously had the Ruud version of EcoNet and geofence did work there. You just couldn’t get your thermostat online with that app - had to use the this app version. So both versions of EcoNet have critical flaws.

And another thing, the original app use to specify if a specific system was actually running in real-time. No longer…EcoNet just tells you if it’s in cooling mode or heating mode, not whether or not your system is running.

And yet another thing…these thermostats REFUSE to connect to the Verizon 5G home internet router. You’re forced to buy a WiFi extender.

All in all, these apps are pretty worthless. It was better when the above things did work, but the quality of EcoNet has gotten worse over time.

As for as my actual HVAC systems, their great, work very well and keep my home very comfortable. It’s the online functionality that is lacking. I mean, why even offer such poor online functionality. It would be better to offer none at all.

Horrible app

EcoNet features geofencing, but doesn't allow multiple residents of a house or apartment to participate. I tried adding a second user and once i succeeded (which involves doing the entire wifi setup again) it deleted the water heater from the other phone. so, no away mode that takes into consideration multiple users in a single residence. Using the same user multiple times doesn't work, because if one phone is outside the geofence, all are set to away. Honestly, who developed this software? how could they not foresee that situation? Also, the hardware on the wifi on a brand new Rheem 2024 water heater can only connect via WPA2, it doesn't handle WPA3 - when i try, it thinks my psk protected wifi is open and never asks for it password.

Good hardware let down by App

Purchased water heater to do one thing only that is save money. We are on time of use billing and get charged triple during peak times. EcoNet doesn’t follow schedule does whatever it wants whenever it wants. When it does seem to follow a schedule the time zone it is apparently set to is changed randomly and you can’t see or set it causing water heater to run during peak times. History shows on times 4-5 hr shifted from actual. It’s a guessing game to set it and listen for when it kicks on to set the schedule then you have to cross your fingers that it sticks to the schedule or that they don’t change the clock time on the back end. Doesn’t follow daylight savings time. This has cost hundreds of dollars being run outside of schedule.

App doesn’t work

Should have kept my Honeywell thermostat. So far EcoNet constantly get disconnected from the Wi-Fi for no reason and then if it reconnects it won’t actually run anything. If I try to change the temp with EcoNet it will just go back to the previous setting when you close it. Have to actually set everything on the thermostat itself if I want to change the temp/schedule/away setting defeating the whole purpose of having an app.
Have tried calling the support line and it disconnects when go thru their phone tree.

Poor app

EcoNet used to have an off button to completely shut the hot water heater off. It now has only a vacation mode. When you talk to the service department to find out whether vacation mode shuts the hot water heater off, they do not really know.. their prepared pitch is it turns the hot water heater down to “the most economical temperature available.”

Garbage app for good water heater

The design of EcoNet was recently redone. Sure it looks prettier now but the nonstop bugs, consistent connection issues, glitchy interactions, and more remain… and are worse now I think. Money spent in the wrong area.

This is paired with a support team that, when they do pick up, never offer any real help or know what’s going on other than repeating the same old steps. And when that doesn’t work, they have nothing else to offer. For the last 3 days our heater has been ‘disconnected’ because of ‘server issues’. No timeline for a resolution, no further explanation of what is going on. Useless.

The entire team on this product need to be replaced and everything about it and how it’s supported and integrated with Rheem rebuilt. It’s a mess.

Rheem needs to hire a new app developer

EcoNet only shows about half the energy use data for our water heater, but shows all for the previous day/week/month as others have reported. This happened in the last few days in the previous version of EcoNet too (which was apparently replaced by EcoNet instead of updated, and without any notification to users of the previous app).

EcoNet has been buggy changing settings on the water heater. I set vacation mode from EcoNet , then logged in later that day and it showed it turned vacation mode off and was back to running the regular schedule. I tried setting a vacation schedule, which put the water heater into vacation mode (according to EcoNet ) but then a couple of days later it was back to normal operation and showed no scheduled vacation. Also, the reported energy use for while it was on vacation mode was nearly the same as normal when we’re home. So, it seems that either it wasn’t actually on vacation mode or the reported energy use is inaccurate.

Needs better instruction

EcoNet should make it clear what kind of water heater connects to what kind of wifi, 5GHz or 2.4GHz. My water heater only works with 2.4GHz and it wasn’t obvious anywhere in EcoNet . I spent half an hour trying to connect myself and another half an hour on the phone with a customer service agent. She finally mentioned that the machine only connects to 2.4GHz at the end of the call. I could have spared at least an hour if EcoNet had mentioned that my machine only connects to 2.4GHz.

Doesn’t connect

Have all info correct, just sits and attempts to connect. Have used many other smart thermostats and this is by far the least intuitive and offers no troubleshooting information. Disappointing.

25 Character a limit for onboarding

I cannot onboard my unit due to an arbitrary 25 character text limit on entering my Wi-Fi password. No, I will not sacrifice my Wi-Fi security for an IoT device.

The 25 character limit for my account signup is weak as well.

Can login, but that’s it

EcoNet seems to be able to see my water heater with the current settings, but I can’t change anything. What’s going on here?

Two very useful features

Reviewing version 6.0.1 (1) for use with Rheem/Ruud 5th generation hybrid heat pump water heater (WH). This update fixed the graphing problem introduced in v6.

There are two functions in EcoNet that make it very useful. First, it can set schedules for your WH. I use it to turn my WH off for 8 hours every night. You could also use it to overheat your water just before peak electricity rates begin and set a lower temperature during peak time.

Second, you can use EcoNet to disable your WH when you will be gone for a few days and then enable it again remotely when you are on your way home, so you arrive to hot water. This is different from Vacation mode, which doesn't work. See below.

EcoNet also has other functions that are less useful, since they can easily be performed on the WH itself. For example, you can adjust the temperature set point, and you can change among the various heating modes (but not Vacation).

Don't try to put the WH in Vacation mode using EcoNet . It doesn't actually get to Vacation and you will lose control of the WH. You won't be able to do anything until you cycle through the modes once using the physical buttons on the WH panel, then kill and restart EcoNet .

Also, the Usage charts are nonsense. Based on my solar system home monitoring I suspected the WH usage in EcoNet was incorrect, so I connected an external monitor to the circuit. I observed that my WH actually uses about half as much energy as shown in the usage graphs.

Finally, ignore the banner in EcoNet that constantly suggests you put the unit into so-called Energy Saver mode for best efficiency. Instead, start with Heat Pump mode. Don't switch to Energy Saver unless you find that Heat Pump is unable to keep up with your demand. Energy Saver uses old fashion resistance elements to supplement the Heat Pump, and those elements are extremely power hungry, like a standard electric water heater. That may be necessary for heavier usage, but try Heat Pump first.

One star for the scheduler plus one star for the ability to remotely enable/disable the WH, minus one star for all the non-working features and the misinformation.

Starlink not supported

If you have satellite internet this will not work. I’ve tried off and on for a year, finally called support. I was asked about 3 questions, and then was asked if I had satellite internet. Well, apparently this app doesn’t work with a internet based router. Literally everything else in the world does. Oh well

EcoNet Proterrea Water Heater App

App Worked great for 7 months then it was reading the water heater anymore. Of coarse no problem, I already have an account so just reinstall it… right?? No do this and you lose ALL your stats from the last 7 months… but wait it keeps the health of your system???? What type of crap is this? I actually liked EcoNet and it was working fine for months. How does it keep the health of your system but not your usage. It was so nice to scroll back every month to see what our use was but no longer. It treated me when I logged back in as a first timer. Can’t believe this. I have many apps that keep track of previous account info if u log in or out… seriously someone fix EcoNet, so many complaints. For how much the water heater costs you think the company could get a quality app company. I am willing to update this review if they can fix this issue. But I am very disappointed with Rheem at this point.

Connecting Remotely after a power outage.

EcoNet should allow the end user to connect back to the server if I am away and at remote location. My this app app is on line but from my understanding you must be at the same location to re connect. I need the access more when away if there is an issue so this should be reconfigured… On another note… when speaking with customer service there is a long lag time between the tech person and the caller… it makes it quite difficult to communicate expeditiously… and both sides can become frustrated for no real reason…

Needs further development and refinement

EcoNet needs a lot of work. First, why is precious screen space taken up with a permanent banner across the top cautioning the viewer that hot water heaters make hot water? And seemingly this is done at the expense of other more important text (such as "Compress…" which indicates the status of the water heater) that is cut off and unreadable? And why is another chunk of the screen taken up by a popup window that can’t be dismissed about enabling energy saver mode? Why doesn’t EcoNet tell me information that is readily available on the heater control panel, such as the actual water temperature (not the programmed temperature) or error codes? Why are there two versions of EcoNet on EcoNet Store (this app and Rheem this app? I could go on but I think that’s enough for now.

Won’t schedule

EcoNet was working fine but now when I enter the scheduling settings (temp, time, days) the settings revert back to default as soon as I turn on “follow schedule” switch. Really frustrating! Have been waiting for a software fix and update for two days.

Update: the fix is in and an update message was sent from the developer. All is well now.

Mostly works but has some major glitches

After 1.5 months EcoNet lost all connectivity with the water heater. The water heater itself was connected fine but EcoNet showed the wrong state (compressor running, it wasn’t) and wrong set point (131F, water heater showed 120F.) changing any settings on app just reset to above after a few seconds. I had to “add a new product” in order to restore functionality and this CLEARED ALL DATA. all historical energy usage lost, schedule reset, connection with demand response on utility lost… so frustrating. Also the vacation mode only works intermittently, don’t bother with that.

Missing Fundamental Features

I recently spent $15,000 on a brand new, state of the art 98% efficient modulating furnace and a two-stage Air Conditioner with controls for 5 independent zones. My expectation after such spending is Rheem this app would be at least comparable to Nest, EcoBee or other modern smart thermostats. I however quickly discovered many basic features are missing. The most important of these features is auto-away for more than one household member.

The overwhelming majority of homes have more than one occupant. Developing an app which will use geofencing for auto-away based on the actions of a single resident is a significant oversight. The ability to geofence with multiple people is a feature all other competing platforms have and is absolutely necessary for the auto away feature to be useful.

Other app issues include

-Multiple Apps: There are several apps in EcoNet Store which all work and look almost identical. This is confusing, please unify your apps under a single brand.

-Humidifier: No humidifier control from EcoNet . I can control dehumidification only. The ability to turn on/off the humidifier and control set points, including the “Smart Control” setting is very important. Humidifiers are an appliance which must be used with extreme caution. Excess moisture could result in significant damage to my home and omitting remote control could leave me powerless to intervene if issues develop.

-Schedules: App and thermostat is hard coded for 4 schedule events. No more, no less. Why would you assume everyone needs exactly 4 schedule events? Please add the ability for the user to decide how many schedule events they need.

-Push Notifications: Every time geofencing switches you to/from away/home. I only want a push notification when there’s a problem. I don’t need to be informed every time I leave/arrive. Disabling push notifications entirely also stops the important stuff. Consider an option in the settings for which push motivations we want.

-Current Status: App doesn’t actually say when the heat/cooling is actually running. It shows current temp and set point but I would like to see if it’s actually running. For modulating furnaces, it should show what % it’s running at.

-Advanced Data: No access to any of the technical data available on the thermostat itself (CFM’s, run hours, static pressure, supply/return temps, serial numbers, etc). Please include a section in EcoNet with this data.

-Usage Data: EcoNet offers no insights into usage. Nest had a feature 12 years ago that would tell you your daily usage which could be used as a guide to efficiency changes you made to your home or set points. Please include this in this app.

Fundamentally, anything that can be done from the thermostat itself should also be available on EcoNet . Right now EcoNet gives us about 5% of the features. I shouldn’t have to stand in front of my thermostat for the other 95%. Anyone using EcoNet has spent a substantial sum of money for a high-end furnace with proprietary controls. Such spending absolutely must come with a premium companion app which at LEAST should equal Nest, Ecobee, or other competing platforms.

Rheem, get your act together and fix EcoNet immediately!

Glitchy

EcoNet seems pretty cool, but as one of the other reviewer‘s noted, EcoNet changes the mode on the heater unpredictably. For example, when the Geo fence function is turned on, it basically just turns off the water heater so you come home to an 80 gallon tank of cold water which takes hours to heat.

I tried to turn that off, but for some reason it’s still basically leaves the heater off. No rhyme or reason and conflicts with what is showing on EcoNet .

Also, if I’m going to be away for several days, and I put the unit into vacation mode from EcoNet , you cannot change the mode back from vacation mode into some heating mode. Do you have to do that manually on the water heater itself and we’re back to the same problem: 80 gallons of cold water when you get back.

Water heater is awesome, but EcoNet is super glitchy. Rheem should have this developer start over. EcoNet degrades the performance of a VERY expensive water heater and probably uses a lot of extra electricity that could have been saved. Sort of defeats the purpose of the water heater.

Reboot!! Need to start over.

Things that should work in the app don’t

I have a heat pump hot water heater that is connected. I have the thermostat set higher than recommended. The messages that are displayed obscure the thermostat dial that depicts the temperature. Further I have been having issues with the heater’s ability to maintain temperature. One of the three buttons work so I can switch modes. The other two appear to give status only. One of the buttons displays “Compress…” with no way of knowing what the rest of the phrase is trying to tell me. I really don’t know what is going on with the tank and whether or not the heat pump is actually working.

Great at first

I installed my hot water heater today and got the this app app setup and connected. It worked great for most of the day but after about 12 hours I login to EcoNet and it says disconnected. I attempted to reconnect but it continues to say disconnected on EcoNet . EcoNet has great features however it is useless if it doesn’t stay connected. I hope that improvements can be made.

Non standard WI-FI

The Wi-Fi on my thermostat is only the older 2Ghz and not the 5 GHz that today’s routers use.

But what is really really annoying is the weak security of the password length limit. Wi-Fi passwords can be up to 56 characters for maximum security. EcoNet/device arbitrarily limits the password length to 25 characters. Now I have to weaken the security of my whole network and reset all my devices for this one badly programmed system. Ruud needs to hire competent developers.

Only sometimes works

When I know I’m going to need more hot water than normal I will increase the temperature from 125 up to 140 in EcoNet . When I’m done, I turn it back down in EcoNet .
Almost every time, it will increase the temperature and accept that, but then not accept being turned back down. That could be dangerous and lead to someone getting burned.

Ever since update app has not worked right!

Ever since last update EcoNet has not worked properly. I am finding my self lost connection from phone to app and water heater. I cannot make my house water heater turn on or adjust while I am away from home. If I am home and I am trying to increase or decrease temperature it will not work and tells me it has lost connection to network! I my self have to go to my main electrical panel and shut off the water heater wait for 30 to 60 seconds and reset and restart the water heater and the system resets itself. This happens now every 2 or 3 days after a hard reset to the system. And for a day or two maybe 3 system connects back to WiFi and works perfect. After a certain amount of time or days network connection to my WiFi and or app is lost and I have to manually shut the water heater along with the WiFi hub that is attached to the water heater to reset or hard reset so I can gain the functionality back on my phone app.

Great! If you’re a household of one 😒

We received the thermostat with our new HVAC unit and were told the one we had wouldn’t be compatible. We assumed the geofence would work the same…nope! Only one person in our household can connect so whenever he leaves and the rest of us are home, we need to manually change it to “I’m home” and then when we all are gone, we need to change it back to “I’m away” 😣What’s the point in having an electronic thermostat if we have to manually change it whenever anyone leaves or comes home (anyone that isn’t my husband that is).

Needs improvement

I use EcoNet to control my heat pump hot water heater, which I love! EcoNet is pretty descent, however it doesn’t show current water temp in the tank. The water heater shows this data on the digital readout on the tank, why can’t it show it in EcoNet . I live with 4 girls, I’d like to know if I’m going to run out of hot water when taking a shower. EcoNet shows the water heater is heating but really who cares? What’s the temp of the water currently in the tank???????

Scheduling working now

I wrote the review about scheduling not working. I called customer support, and she was very helpful. Turns out I somehow had a schedule set by my utility. She was able to disable that, and after a restart of EcoNet , the Save Schedule button showed up. So I am now giving 3 stars because it works, but when it doesn’t, it gives no indication of why not.

Better but still not great

Far better than the garbage that was the last version but still a bit buggy. Every couple of months my thermostat forgets the WiFi configuration and has to be tricked into remembering it. And I do mean tricked, using EcoNet to simply delete it and re-add does not work. Infuriating.

Also still missing features that should be easy to add. I know my water heater monitors the water temperature inside, I can go into my basement and check it. Would be nice if I didn’t have to, should be easy peasy to add to EcoNet . I think this app knows this because others have mentioned it in their reviews. this app just doesn’t care. So mixed feelings all around.

UI needs a lot of work

I use EcoNet to control a heat pump water heater (platinum proterra series).
Banners cover upper portions of the temperature settings and cannot be dimissed.
If you use iOS zoomed view (e.g. on an iPhone 15 pro max) one can see even less of the text in the icons showing the compressor and heating elements status. Clicking or long pressing doesn’t show more information.
The scheduling function forces you to use 4 presets, and they cannot be deleted or more added.
What is also the deal about two apps in EcoNet Store that are essentially the same but with different icon?? (Rheem this app and this app)

App is ok

The refresh is definitely an improvement and a lot smoother interaction. However, no improvement to control or capabilities. For water heater I’d love to see: 1) real time actual temps of water heater, not just the set point. You can see this on the water heater touchscreen, would love to see this integrated into EcoNet as a sub data point on the temp setting rainbow. 2) show energy cost next to energy usage with ability to enter your cost per kWh in settings and it auto calculates cost for you when you are looking at any of the usage reports (day, week, month, year). 3)someone else mentioned more than 4 daily schedule options, I’d like to see this as customizable to add/delete number of daily options.

Hits the Basics

I’ve been using EcoNet for about 6 months and I think it does a fairly good to so so job for what it is. It would be great if I could see more granular data and have more than 4 time slots for scheduling, I’d like at least 8. Having some sort of HomeKit integration would be amazing as well. I hate having silo’d systems around my home.

Buggy and lack of information.

Overall a clunky and buggy app. Further, lacks information. One big thing that drives me nuts, hot water "meter" that tells you how much hot water you have available. Meter says full. 3 minutes into a shower, using 1.5 gpm shower head, and it already reads empty (yet plenty of hot water is available. also have temp set to 135). Yet other times, it says full yet no hot water left at all. PLEASE! Just give us an actual temp pressing if the tank water!

It does the same thing on all 3 of our water heaters (my home, parents home and grandmothers home).

Also the one at grandmas home, always disconnects from the wi-fi, and then i need to re add it.

Worse than before

Update: It is nice the developer reads and responds to the reviews. It seems working better now. Totally useless. The old version at least worked sometimes but this version doesn’t work at all. It keeps to turn my water heater off so I have to manually turn the water heater on. It won’t even connect to the water heater now. It’s the WORST smart home app I have ever used.

It’s ok but

Just started using this but one of my biggest complaints is that EcoNet doesn’t show you the current temperature in the house if the system mode is turned to off. Since the thermostat is Wi-Fi I shouldn’t have to turn the heat or a/c on just to see the current house temperature. I’ve looked through settings and I don’t think I’m missing something obvious. Otherwise I haven’t used this enough to fully evaluate

Schedule Enhancement

Can more then 4 time slots be allowed for the schedule option? I would like to see 8 time slots allowed so I can adjust the schedule in more detail to save electricity.

1 year review

I like the concept, the ease of use and the features that EcoNet has. Where this fails and is quite annoying is that I need to constantly pair EcoNet to the hot water module. For example, we went away for a few weeks, the system was in eco mode. Got to the airport try to fire the system back up and it lost connection. We all had to make do with a Luke warm shower until the morning.

Dysfunctional/ Update -Now works

EcoNet is mostly useless. Anytime it gets disconnected form the router, which is anytime the router reboots, it is a long process to reconnect. I will not reconnect directly using the phone app. Per instructions from the help desk, I need to connect first to the controller with a laptop. After that process is completed, I can then attempt to connect with the phone app. That works sometimes. Then the next time I look at EcoNet , I will see that it has once again disconnected and the process starts again. I have pretty much never been able to actually use EcoNet since the water heater was new.

Update:
After posting this review, Rheem this app support reached out for me to contact them. I did so and they sent a new controller for my water heater. After a dozen attempts to connect to the new controller, with no luck, I called on support again. After numerous failed attempts with her, we finally were able to connect using an alternate method. The real test was now to see if it would reconnect after a WIFI shut down, which the previous unit would not do. It worked! I finally can use EcoNet to control my water heater.

Doesn’t work with T-mobile 5G home internet

The previous version worked with my old cable internet provider. I recently switched to T-Mobile 5G home internet and it won’t connect. Researched some troubleshooting and forced the modem to only use the lower frequency bit that didn’t work. Hopefully they fix it with a new update.

A few features missing

I only use this for my HVAC system. I do not have a water heater. The prior app would show the temperature of the house even if the system was turned off. EcoNet does not show that.

Also, it would be extremely useful to have the ability both on the thermostat, as well as on EcoNet to override the programmed temperatures for a specific amount of time. Right now, this can only be done on the thermostat itself and requires going down several sub menus to do that.

Ok. Looking for improvements

First, having “this app” and “Rheem this app” listed as apps on the iOS App Store is weird and confusing. It’s not obvious at all which is correct to use. I ended up with this app and it is working so I guess it is right.

Functionality is ok. It would be nice to have a little more detail on the water temperature. I am guessing there are more than one temp sensors in the tank (or at least there should be) and it would make sense to share actual temp info from in the tank and maybe one for the temps of the water entering and leaving the tank.

Also, while the graphs of electrical usage are ok, the one for the day should be a line chart in kilowatts with more datapoints (every minute?). All the charts should show average kilowatt hours for the time period across the that chart maybe at the bottom. I should also be able to get to any iteration of a graph without scrolling.

Having the data available for download would be cool for those who are into it (I assume it is kept over time for us).

Finally, I am looking forward to demand response (please push National Grid in Massachusetts). Having EcoNet being able to track and show that somehow would be great.

Status of HVAC

The previous version of EcoNet would show the status of the HVAC. If it was actually running it would say cooling or heating. Did I miss a setting. Can this be implemented? Now it always says cooling even if not running

New update looks better, but still overly complex

The updated app is much cleaner and more stable, but still has some of the quirks and shortcomings of the old version. Scheduling is still a mystery (or rather, why the water heater ignores the schedule). And the modes aren’t much help. “Energy Saver” always results in a lack of hot water, and keeping the system on “High Demand” seems wasteful.

Here’s a better approach - what I really want EcoNet to control is the electrical heating element vs. compressor. It’s the most distinguishing feature of the Rheem system. So, for example, when the tank is full use ONLY the heat pump. When the tank drops below a programmable set point (e.g. 25%), then activate the element until it reaches a shut off set point (e.g. 75%).

Something that like, plus a Vacation Mode, is all that’s really necessary.

Clean, unrefined

1. Back button is misleading, it’s a home button, not a back button.

2. Can’t see the full status message of my heat pump water heater. Might not be compatible with my iPhone 12 Mini, cause the message says “Compress Ru…”, with no option to tap and see the full message.

3. I’d like to see actual or calculated current kilowatt usage. For bonus points, allow the user to choose between digital digit readout or kilowatt/ammeter analog gauge simulation.

4. I’d like to see icons for my water heater indicating if the heat pump, upper element, or lower element are powered or not, and each separate.

5. The amount of detailed information given is very light. I’d like to see an option in settings to change the view between limited east to understand info (current) user with no water heater/plumbing/electrical knowledge, advanced with a lot more info, and professional, with everything.

Pros:

1. easy to set up WiFi for me, but I’m a tech nerd.

2. App appearance is pleasing and the layout makes sense, except for the lack of more detailed data deeper into EcoNet .

Inconsistent between water heaters

We are on our second 65 gal hybrid water heater in two months (first one sprung an internal leak and was just replaced). With the first unit, EcoNet worked pretty well except it consistently had the wrong time zone. With the second unit any hot water usage drops the INDICATED level to 2/3 or even 1/3. A single shower will sometimes result in an indication of empty despite there being plenty of hot water in the tank. Additionally, it shows the date being days off which means the usage data is worthless. What is going on here?

Overall effective. Schedule function doesn’t work

Overall EcoNet is much improved from the previous version. I do have problems with adjustments “sticking” as they sometimes will revert back to what was set prior to my temp change. I have also never been able to get the schedule function to work properly no matter what I try. And I am only trying to set two temp changes that are the same every day.

Update...issue fixed with app update

Update. The recent app update enabled this scheduling

I was also able to get support from their support team. When calling in select wifi connection issues to connect to the heat pump water heater support team and this app app support team even if your unit is connected to wifi..it's the only way to reach them.

One of the reasons I chose this my ruud water heater was to enable time of use scheduling to hear water warmer during low energy times. Their app doesn't even have the feature. EcoNet support link in the Apple store is missing and emailing their support team from their advertised website...got no response. The parts of EcoNet that exist work well. But ultimately they are falsely advertising their products (ruud and rheem, they use the same app)

Does not refresh some options until app restart

Developers: Smart Thermostat fan speed change an also Mode change are NOT reflected in EcoNet . I have to restart EcoNet to see the changes. For humidity level it works!

Simple app needs more scheduling slots

I like EcoNet overall, but it is limited to only four scheduling times per day. I need at least five for my specific setup. It seems that it would be easy to add another few scheduling slots per day or just allow the user to add/subtract however many they need like most other smart home apps. This would be extremely helpful.

Works okay for water heater

Have had this hooked to our Rheem this app enabled water heater now for 2 years. I honestly don’t use it much as for us our water heater is basically set and forget. The graphs and health are nice though I do wish that it had a way to list the success of the supposedly automatic monthly tests the out shutoff valve is supposed to be doing.

Thermostat

I have written the CEO a few times about the this app thermostat. Every time there is any type of interruption with the cable or electricity I lose my Wi-Fi connection. I also have another home in FL. with an ecobee and a Honeywell thermostats. Even during the hurricane when I lost both power and cable my thermostats both reconnected. Why can’t my this app do that? No one can give me the answer. I tell everyone I know just how poor your products are and to stay away from Rheem this app.

Nothing but problems for 3 months

Horrible scheduling. I set the schedule it works for a few days then quits. Now I try to create a schedule. As soon as I set it to “follow schedule” it erases and defaults back to no schedule.

UPDATE: The developer contacted me and explained that they were temporarily experiencing issues since the recent time change. I went and set up my schedule again at it is working as advertised.

lesser time slots?

EcoNet is simple and useful to control my hybrid heat pump water heater. But there's still room for improvement, would like to adjust time slots by adding or deleting them.

First time using

I’ve had this Rheem water heater for a while, but never linked it to WiFi and Eco net. Wish I had way earlier. Using EcoNet actually told us the issue I was having. Being able to adjust the temperature setting from my phone is very nice. I also see several other options I’ll be setting up soon. The one option I really wish it had was a reading of the actual temperature of the water in the tank. That would be very helpful. It’s actually strange that Eco Net tells me the weather outside, but not the actual temperature of the water in the tank.

Nice app

I recently had to buy a new water heater. I decided to go with the same brand,Rheem, that was there since we purchased our home in 2005. After 2 defective brand new water heaters, the 3rd one finally was working when plumber installed. I love that now water heaters are equipped with WiFi but my only issue is that ever since connecting my phone for EcoNet it keeps giving me alerts and when I check water heater it’s not showing anything needs service. It’s a brand new water heater. Confused. Don’t know what to do. So I don’t think app is working right.

Not too bad

Overall EcoNet works well. It would be great to add the capability to open or close the shut off valve using app and not just the alarm reset on the physical water heater.
