I hate, Hate, HATE Meetup, but have no choice but to use it now as the old app will no longer allow me to create meetings. When typing an event description, it copies everything I type, making multiples of every line and paragraph. It is constantly reloading, so that I cannot see what I’m typing. If I leave the screen to get more information, everything I’ve added disappeares and I have to start from scratch. I can no longer type directly into it. The only choice is to type elsewhere and paste into it. When I save the meeting, it gives me a repeated connectivity error, no matter where I am or what I’m connected to. Hate it, and yet I pay $200 annually to use it. The worst!!!
Just what we need, a 2nd app to manage things we previously could from the main this app app. It’s like this app business planning is like “how can we make the user experience worse??” and then they implement whatever they come up with. Let’s add a 3rd app just because…
To address the developer response: I could previously “manage events on the go” from the this app app, without the need for a second app. Why not a 3rd app to “allow me to create events on the go”? And another app to “allow me to edit events on the go”? You’ve stripped features away from the main app, making 2 apps a necessity for organizers who also want to attend other groups events. It’s entirely stupid to have a 2nd app with functionality that used to be present within the main this app app. So many technologies allow persona changes with a simple drop-down….why would this app think an entirely different app (which will of course have its own changes, updates, and management) is the right way to go? Dumb idea from the start.
It’s hard to put words to apps this limited, buggy, and unnecessary. The same functionality for organizers exist in the standard this app app and allows you one app to manage events.
Then along comes Meetup, which has not been functionally changed in years and cannot even enter a description for an existing event without moving text around randomly within a standard text entry box. It’s like this app hired a bunch of college interns to write a redundant app over a weekend based on web frames and awful cross platform development tools. At least try to make Meetup have some level of functionality beyond what you already have before splitting already poor mobile apps into two separately bad apps, which are now only half as good as they were before, which was already bad.
None of this makes any sense and I would encourage any fellow meet up organizer to simply delete this Organizer app and revert to the web or standard this app app.
I’ve written many times about this on discord, but Meetup is so full of bugs. I can’t possibly list them all. Can you please go back to the original meet up that we can edit?
Here are just a few of the many bugs I ran into today:
1. When editing a new event, Meetup on iOS cannot find any of my previous locations. Both Google and iOS maps find this location by just typing the name. this app can’t find it, further cannot find my previous location for past events. So each time I have to enter that I’m in the United States, duh and all the other information to enter a location.
2. I see a new message, from the this app chat. But when I click on it it pages forward to next month and won’t let me see the chat from a previous meet up.
3. Then I try to view my personal direct messages, but they have disappeared. There is no longer a selection for direct messages.
This is by far the buggiest app I use. When you’re writing an event description, it will randomly copy everything you’ve written and and paste it into your description so you have everything double. When you are creating an event, as you move through entering information for the different parts, it will randomly change things you’ve entered like the time of the event, the day of the event, whether or not people can bring guests, etc. Unless you are extremely careful in checking and rechecking everything multiple times over the course of creating the event, you are likely to post an event with incorrect information. There is no reason that I should have to enter the settings for my event, have Meetup randomly change them, and then have to re-enter them.
While this is billed as an app for this app organizers, it’s far from it. The only thing you can do in Meetup is make and edit events, something you can already do in the original this app app. You cannot: - manage or edit your group settings - view or adjust your member list - view or accept new member requests - contact your group members - view group notifications or posts - see any group statistics I downloaded it because I thought this would make my life easier. It only takes up room on my phone. Just use the regular this app app and visit the desktop website to do anything that app can’t handle. A real app for organizers would let you do everything you can already do in the original this app app and enjoy new features. Don’t waste your time on this one.
I have multiple large this app groups (thousands of members in each) and have been paying this app for an organizer subscription since 2017. Meetup and their website are absolutely awful and not dependable. Currently, I cannot even post a new event on Meetup without getting a glitch saying to “Check my network settings” - despite my wifi and every app working fine.
There is always an issue and it’s also extremely annoying to have to have an extra app outside this app as an organizer anyways. The website also doesn’t let me post events without just a blank screen coming up. The customer service is zero. Most users on this app are trolls. I do not recommend becoming an organizer for any group through the this app platform.
... and it's hit or miss. It definitively isn't intuitive. It doesn't seem to have a consistent ability to permit an organizer navigate to the places you need to access as an actual organizer so you have to spend way too much time just pushing buttons and hope that ultimately you're able to figure it out.
It also seems to have some bugs, E. G., You can't easily delete photographs for previous events. It just won't allow it. When trying to put a word in all caps it takes a lot of work because it uncapitalizes letters in the middle of the process.
I’ve used the regular this app app for awhile now and was inspired to start my own group. I foolishly did not listen to all of the organizers of this app groups I’ve joined about how awful Meetup is. This is the least user friendly app I have ever used. In case I’m just stupid, I asked my software engineer husband to help me and he also couldn’t figure out Meetup. You have to sign in on a desktop to change your profile picture which is a massive undertaking in of itself…so why even have an app if you have to log onto desktop to complete basic tasks?!?? The organizer app is so bad that I unfortunately just decided to give up on starting my own group.
Please invest in User Experience Research and Design. The fact that an organizer needs to use two apps to manage events, communicate, or do just about anything makes using Meetup very difficult. Any UX professional that performed user journeys would quickly learn how difficult this platform is. I’m already preparing to migrate my group to Facebook, which is also FREE. There is no benefit to an organizer for paying to manage a group other than the opportunity to volunteer our time and improve Meetups signup data. Please do better.
I use this app for Organizers in two main ways: (1) to create events and (2) to approve new members to my group. Both features are buggy and frustrating to use.
Adding bold, italics, and other formatting to event descriptions can’t be done like you would in a word processor. Instead, you have to use asterisks. Even when you do that, the preview doesn’t show the formatting, so you have to hope it worked correctly, or wait to preview your draft in a browser. Multiple reviewers below have mentioned how dysfunctional the text boxes are, so I’ll just add to the chorus on that. I’ve taken to typing my event descriptions in Apple Notes then copying and pasting to Meetup .
Approving pending members is the most frustrating feature. It seems to work in different ways depending on how many members there are to approve. It’s not an app page; instead, it opens a browser page (negative billion stars for this alone). There used to be a way to approve all requests at once, but that seems to have disappeared. My welcome message doesn’t show on the approval page, so I can’t make edits if needed. And there’s no option to select whether to default to sending the welcome message or not, so I have to choose each time. this app web isn’t perfect, but it’s definitely easier to use than Meetup . I only use Meetup when I have to. I hope it improves.
I started a new group and have had multiple problems w/ Meetup . I have to make edits and fix glitches on the website and even then there are issues. Hard to see emails or chats from members to me. Don’t get notifications, etc. My group doesn’t seem to be promoted either. It’s expensive now to be an organizer and the cost is only going up. I don’t think I’m getting my monies’ worth paying for something that doesn’t work right. Other organizers say the same thing about Meetup . Luckily the venue for my group advertises so had a decent turnout. Had they not I would have lost my time and money.
I have been a customer for years and organized many events. this app services are often out of service, giving 500 errors. When it works, it’s pretty slow to load. I suggest investing more on reliability and performance. As for the organizer app, it’s asking for login every time I open it; did someone mess up the saving of a an auth session? So much for a dedicated organizer app, it doesn’t have all the settings, so I end up using the desktop web app anyway. I recent problem I came across was the new feature Event chat for some reason didn’t appear in settings for a new event that was copied from an old one.
This new version has made some improvements, but it is still very clunky and somewhat unforgiving when using it on a mobile device. The worst problem is when writing a description for an event. After typing past three or four sentences, editing can become very challenging. And forget speed or finger drag typing-as the system just can’t handle it, causing your text to become completely indiscernible gibberish.
I rated this a couple of months ago and while they did fix my issue with always having to sign back in despite just using it they still haven’t fixed the RSVP date issue when creating an event. It still only allows you to set the RSVP open date to two weeks before the event. That makes no sense to me because I’m the regular app you can set it 30 days before. I hate creating events in the organizer app so much that I uninstall it and use the regular app.
When writing up event descriptions, the content will duplicate itself. VERY annoying to have to continually go in to delete sentences that for some reason duplicate by themselves.
I have also had members tell me, and I’ve noticed it being in other this app groups, that the notifications don’t work much anymore. Meetup is going downhill and making it difficult to schedule events because no one seems to hear about them. And YES, our notifications are on. The fees for Meetup are going up but yet the service and reliability are going down. This is why I see many meetups moving to Facebook groups.
Are use the drag to type feature with the iPhone 8. In Meetup it doesn’t seem to work very well.
Also, when I’m setting the date and the time, when I pick the start time, and then I go to the end time, that affects the start time, so I have to change the start time again. I think you should automatically add an hour or two to the start time, for the end time, and don’t let the end time affect start time.
This message is to the creators of this app. I made a series of events and was able to set it for each Sunday of every week, continuously. I want to edit them and change the time and/or delete them if needed. I am able to make a series of continuous events but there’s not an option to go back and edit them all at once, only individually… which is kind of annoying. Otherwise, great app and I recommend it to anybody and everybody.
Looks like the developers have listened to the reviews for the first iteration (which needed much improvement). Glad to see many of the key features like seeing users and contacting users were added. They still link back to the web interface but it’s quite useable.
One feature that is critical and poses a safety issue: please allow organizers to ban members from the group from Meetup and prevent them from seeing future event times and locations. This is a serious safety concern as these banned members can easily crash an event and threaten members.
I really wanted to love the event check-in feature. So nice and quick to check people in from my phone instead of a piece of paper! But I soon realized a fatal flaw: it’s incredibly easy to accidentally un-check someone when scrolling through the list to find others. I did this probably a dozen times for an event of 65 RSVPs and am still not sure I recovered it correctly. Please fix!
