Good content; buggy app

I think the podcast content is great. However, since the launch of the new app, I’ve had nothing but problems. I know the developers have been slowly working on fixes, but it’s been months and months and there are still major issues that make it completely unusable at times for me.

I do most of my listening offline with downloaded content. Unfortunately, it’s not infrequent that I’m not even able to launch HippoEducation when offline as it gets stuck at a questionnaire screen and then HippoEducation crashes. Additionally, when offline, if I click on an episode to play it launches a completely different episode, and there’s no way to select a specific episode except by skipping forward or backward on tracks until I get to the one I want. If my phone goes from offline to wifi while playing (or the other way around), it stops the episode that is currently playing and jumps to another screen, which is quite annoying. It frequently does not save my listening progress when offline. Please fix these problems, developers, and I’ll give you 5 stars because the podcast content is great (if only HippoEducation worked to access it easily)!

No. is the windows 2k version of any app

I’ll be brief all the issues are in other reviews. So much swiping and columns and unintuitive. Facelift the old app there’s nothing wrong with that one. Then add multi rap support under 1 app. Ensure playback position is saved. That’s all it needs. Inability to see progress bars on 1 screen. Unable to download all. Unable to skip on Lock Screen.

At least model off pocket casts or something with a stellar track audio player track record if you want a facelift.

I’ve used the old version since launch and this is a downgrade by every measure.

Does not save location or advance

I subscribe to PC and UC RAP and really like the Hippo Education content. However, I absolutely hate HippoEducation. I listen in short stretches, like driving for 5-10 minutes to work. When I start playing, the audio will switch between chapters, but the screen stays on the initial chapter for which I started playing. If I want to go to the currently playing chapter, like to look at the chapter summary, I have to go back and then select the chapter that's playing, but it won't realize that I'm half way through and will restart the chapter. I spend way too much time figuring out what I was last listening to, both chapter and location in chapter. I've deleted and reinstalled HippoEducation , made sure background refresh is on, but nothing helps. Using HippoEducation feels like a chore. Like any audio or podcast app it should visually advance with the audio and keep track of where I am, but it does not. 5 stars for content and 1 star for app.

Great content, app still needs work

As a disclaimer, my issues are only with the mobile app; the actual content is great.

-When selecting to review a segment from search results, the accompanying summary does not match the segment I would like to review. It typically shows info from a different search result. I often will search for a specific episode to review the written summary and this problem makes it impossible to do so. Also, it would be helpful to have the option of reading the written summary from a segment without having to elect playing the audio.

-It would also be helpful to be able to sort/select CME by specific dates or time frames instead of just by year. When providing completion of CME for employer reimbursement, I end up needing to sort through months of listening to find the appropriate dates

Needs Work

Content is fantastic. Definitely need to work on HippoEducation if you are going to eliminate access to the content on other platforms. App doesn’t remember where a recording stopped and so starts from the beginning if paused. Doesn’t auto play if the last podcast is played, only if the first one is. Doesn’t auto delete once recording has been played through. Buttons are too small (especially the skip forward/backward 10 sec) and have to be pressed multiple times to work. Initial load screen takes forever and cycles through same questions multiple times. I never review apps but am so frustrated with this one in my attempts to access the excellent content. Please bring back subscription podcasts on user platforms of choice!!

Great Content. Unusable App

Urgent care rap is the BEST resource available.
Look forward to listening at beginning of each month. I’m surprised that HippoEducation passed muster in the testing phase. It is not usable and highly frustrating for all the reasons outlined below. Much easier when all raps were not consolidated in one. Impossible to return to chapter that was not finished. Assuming they are still available cannot locate free monthly chapter on secondary raps such as peds. I am hopeful this will be fixed soon.

Some improvements but app does not work well

There are some aspects of HippoEducation that I prefer over the old Peds Rap app, mainly the ability to download individual chapters to my library for easy access as well as being able to rewind 10 seconds from the Lock Screen. I really appreciate these improvements. Unfortunately overall HippoEducation is not functioning well and there are many issues that prevent convenient use. Some examples:
- it tends to not save my correct place in an episode, I might listen to a chapter for 15 minutes and then next time I open HippoEducation it’s back in the last spot and I have to spend time finding my place. This is my biggest complaint.
- HippoEducation often freezes and quits
- if I open options for an individual chapter, it lists download, add to library, mark as unplayed, etc however pretty much no matter where I click it just downloads no matter what - not a huge deal but I don’t think that menu is working properly

There’s a lot to like about HippoEducation but with the current functioning it’s fairly disappointing.

UN-improved

I listened to the old AAPA Primary Care Rap. App was not perfect, but okay. This one … I was liking the 10 second fwd/back option on the iPhone locked screen. I was disappointed in the difficulty finding where I had left off. Then the new app decided that “play” will not work anywhere ever. After fighting a bit gave up, listened to NPR reply the same news again, and uninstalled it later at home (I’m a car listener). I will reinstall and hope for the best after I look up my password again.

Buggy

Unfortunately, HippoEducation fails to keep track of where I am at with my listening quite frequently. So I am endlessly frustrated to find where I left off. It also frequently fails to mark chapters that I have viewed completely as listened to and I will have to go back and manually correct it. Also, if I play the content at 1.2 X speed, it seems to decrease my CME value (time) which is a bit bizarre in my opinion. If one has reviewed the content, what difference does it matter the speed at which that was accomplished? The general idea is fine, but the software developers need to work on it a bit more.

This app needs a lot of work

I listen to Peds RAP and prefer the simplicity of the old app. The new one is very buggy and often just crashes on me when I’m listening to it in the car.
Other issues I have with HippoEducation :
- On the home page it is difficult to find older chapters to listen to and you have to click “See More” multiple time to find the one you’re looking for
- It doesn’t keep track of your listening progress very well and will often lose its place if I listen to other chapters and go back to the first one
- There’s no scroll bar on any page so you don’t know how far left you have to go. When there’s over 85 chapters in PedsRAP it makes finding things more difficult
- It doesn’t seem to “Mark as Played” automatically after finishing a podcast
- There’s no way to quickly see which podcasts and chapters you’ve already completed on the home page without individually clicking into it to see the progress bar.

Love the podcast not a fan of the app

I love the relevant information and the presentation. I have issues with listened chapter not showing up as completed and not getting CME credit for those chapters. Seems like this happens most often with downloaded chapters. I have been a subscriber for about 3 years. I contacted their IT department today. Hopefully this gets resolved. If not I will need to reconsider my subscription since the whole point is CME.

Great content, issues with app

I love the content, but part of what makes this great as a resource is the potential to reference previous topics as I encounter them in practice. Unfortunately, the search function doesn’t work well enough to make that possible.

I can type ‘constipation’ into the search bar, and the recent episode on constipation is nowhere to be found. This month, there’s an episode on splinters. Type ‘splinters’, and I get results on HIV care instead. So I’m left scrolling back through all the previous episodes trying to find the relevant topic, which I don’t have time for when patients are waiting.

When we could use Apple Podcasts, we had the benefit of their search function, which was much better.

Given the price I pay for access, I am holding out hope that HippoEducation will eventually be made more usable.

Problems with offline access

I am a big fan of the content on HippoEducation. However, HippoEducation is a barrier to consuming this content. It is very buggy when going in and out of cell service in the mountains. This issue causes the podcast to stop suddenly and then be unable to resume due to lack of internet access. Additionally, you can download episodes but this doesn’t allow you to actually play them when you don’t have cell service. I presume it is tied to the CME attestation? Either way, fixing this problem with HippoEducation will keep my subscription active.

Still some issues

Definitely an improvement from the previous version, but still having trouble navigating:
- if I’m in the middle of an old chapter, if I come back to it later (even without quitting HippoEducation ) I will have lost the chapter and need to click “more” and scroll down to find it again. In other words, it will save where I am in the middle of an episode but not the list of episodes for the chapter.
- if I want to go back to an episode that I’ve watched just to see the summary, it will automatically start playing it from nearly the end and then skip to the next episode. This happens even after I mark it as unwatched.
- sometimes an episode will say one name (eg paper chase) but then actually play a different episode. I will have to restart HippoEducation for it to work
- I will often have to press buttons (eg the play button) multiple times before it will do something

Totally love the content as always, but looking forward to another update!

Cumbersome to log in every. Single. Time.

HippoEducation is the only one I’ve seen that does not remember user information between uses. Having to navigate and click through several screens of info before each use is annoying at best, especially if I’m reopening HippoEducation after putting my phone down for a few minutes or having to do another task. This includes answering phone calls when driving, and that was the main draw of a CME podcast for me, but it’s not safe to re-navigate the login screens on the road and as a result haven't been listening much. I don’t know if anyone has a workaround but if this isn’t resolved I can’t justify continuing to subscribe.

Fabulous content Glitchy app

I can’t switch between UC Rap and PC rap and sometimes the content completely disappears. I’ve done all the usual tech fixes including uninstall reinstall and all I get is the spinning wheel of death when I want to play UC rap. I’ve started to listen to this months content on the internet on my long drive to work, which can be awkward

Good Ideas but not quite there

I just downloaded the new app and was excited to see the search feature for iOS, but unfortunately it’s not usable due to bugs currently. 1) When you click on browse topics it takes you to a blank page 2) (Fixed with update) Once you’ve searched for something it is impossible to get back to the original browse topics page Looking forward to HippoEducation being bug free!

OUD decoded

Overall this is a great source of primary care CME. I have been using it for over two years. I am excited to have a access to OUD decoded. Unfortunately I can only use it in a web browser as it does not load on HippoEducation even though HippoEducation Store states 1.5 update gives you access?

They have fixed all my issues

The developers are very active and respond to user feedback. They have fixed all the issues I had with HippoEducation , most importantly that it stopped after each segment. Kudos to the developers and this is now a great app and has great content

The education is top quality and the podcast hosts are amazing

I could listen to Neda’s voice all day. The features in HippoEducation just keep getting better and the ui is spot on.
