Excellent app for watersports: kayaking, rowing, supping, sailing etc.

This is a fantastic app to keep track of your performance when doing water-based sports, regardless if it is sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing or paddle sports like kayaking, rowing or SUP’ing.

I use it mostly for kayaking and surf skiing. WaterspeedSailingWingWind on the Apple Watch can be used stand-alone to track speed, heartrate, distance etc. WaterspeedSailingWingWind then syncs to the iPhone app automatically when in reach again. This means that I do not have to take my phone on the water. On my iPhone and iPad I have access to the exact GPS route on a map, speed and other statistics I collected while paddling. The PRO version is also well worth it, it gives you access to detailed weather, wind and tide forecasts and provides seamless syncing with Strava (your route and stats get uploaded to Strava with the correct activity classification automatically). It works very well; the support is outstanding, with frequent app updates and feature additions.

This is a must app for anyone serious about water-based sports!

Essential for Sailers

Wow!! Do I like it and then some!! I sail on the Charles River and started to track my sailing late 2017 and found an app that did it pretty well. I record about 28 trips and then I found Waterspeed. I am instantly impressed as I ONLY need my Series 3 Apple Watch to record my sails. Previously I had to take my phone and watch to record trips. With Waterspeed I can see my trips played back with a visualization of my HR - Speed - Time - Heading. So cool! Waterspeed also uses colors to indicate your speed on a map (green, yellow, orange, red). I have 4 sails with Waterspeed and each time I’m more eager to look at the results and see where I had speed on the sail and how I performed. Awesome!! The data that is gathered is complete. Each sail tracks duration, distance, wind speed, avg speed, top speed, best speed 10 sec, best speed 20 sec, best speed 500m, best speed 1km, best speed 1nm, HR min, HR max, HR avg, calories, heading, and location. Also, I did purchase the Pro membership. BTW there is start timer too. Wow!

Best tracker I’ve used for kayaking

Absolutely amazing app!

One of the problems I had with a lot of “tracker” apps for kayaking is that they required you to use your phone, which causes problems when you keep it in a dry bag in a hatch on your kayak. WaterspeedSailingWingWind solves that problem! I can easily start/pause/stop my trips from my apple watch which means I no longer need to take my phone out.

The data that WaterspeedSailingWingWind collects is perfect and works very well with the apple health app. You can even import/export your data and full cloud sync’ing. A lot of times developers just stop working on apps, but I don’t think there’s been a week without an update on WaterspeedSailingWingWind and so much stuff gets added!

Another amazing feature is the trip editing. A couple times I would forget to stop my trip before packing up and driving away, then it completely screws up the data since it thought I was going 60mph in a kayak. But I can easily cut out the section of the trip that’s in a vehicle and the data works perfectly fine!

Lastly I wont forget to mention the amazing developer(s). I had an issue about 2 years ago with something on WaterspeedSailingWingWind and within a day he messaged me back with a solution and even went as far as making sure it worked perfectly. Easily earned a life long user of WaterspeedSailingWingWind because how good the support is!

Fits this paddler’s needs perfectly!

I use Waterspeed to track my kayak paddling and it does everything I need. One of my favorite features is the ability to trim a session. Sometimes I may forget to stop the activity session when I make it back to the car, and then I get skewed data because it recorded me paddling 40+ mph (while driving the car). No worries, I can just trim that off the recorded track when I get home. Another favorite is the feature to attach a photograph to a session. This either allows me to capture a scene or pushes me to be creative. Going back over the pics reminds me of how the river changes through the seasons. Seeing paddling stats for the day/week/month/year/all time is super easy too!

And finally, the developer support is top notch!

Great app for the sailor

I really like the pro version. It’s worth every penny. I sent in a request to add a feature that enables you to select a location other than your current location to monitor for weather / wind forecasts, and I got favorable feedback. I used it today and it is the best deal I have found. I haven’t raced with it yet, but it really helps you see how changes you make affect your speed and performance. It really keeps me in tune with the current conditions and performance.
I am able to change the location where I want to monitor the wind and weather forecast, but I still don’t know how to change the default location, from my current location to a desired location. At any rate, Waterspeed is the ultimate app for the sailor! The pro upgrade is definitely worth it.

Love the app. Tracks all I do (& more) at a good price

After looking for an app with Apple Watch support for tracking water activities, I decided to go with Waterspeed. It’s been perfect for me. Support for all the things I do in the water (SUP, Kayak, jet ski,, surf, sail) and more if I pick up a new hobby. The interface is clean and works well. Any issues I have are more about the watch responding when the face is wet than WaterspeedSailingWingWind design.

I had a problem with syncing between the watch, iPhone, and iPad but Massimiliano in support was very helpful in getting things working properly. Fast response and they made sure the issue was resolved to my satisfaction.

Finally, the yearly subscription fee is reasonable (to me) for what it offers. A great value all around.

Works Great With Apple Watch

I’ve used the free app 8 times while windsurfing, with good success. Speed and distance travelled display on watch is easily viewable. Testing the watch against the speedometer on my boat shows it to be very accurate. Reviewing the data post session is cool, and enlightening.
I did have what I thought was an upload to phone issue, but perhaps I only had to manually upload from watch to phone. Figured that out. It appears that subsequent updates have resolved this.
I am a recreational windsurfer and currently do not have any interest in the race related pay options. I do wish I could view more of the diary/ history than is currently allowed.

Really liking this app

However, I wish it was possible to view the tracking map in full screen mode without the additional information on the lower half of the screen, so that you can view it larger

I found how to save the map with the information discretely overlaid, but the picture quality of the saved map photo, is poor compared to when you view the map in WaterspeedSailingWingWind

Unlike other paddleboard tracking apps the price is reasonable and I really like that you can use your watch and don’t always have to have your phone with you. For a long day out it saves my phone battery, where other phone only apps drain my battery rapidly

Really nice app supports Apple Watch 3

New Version works better with Apple Watch , now I wish I had the new Apple Watch 3 so I could leave my iPhone at home. I really like the user interface of WaterspeedSailingWingWind , Watch view is cleaner and bigger. I have not tried it under sail yet. I have taken it for a spin while kayaking. The new integration with the Health app makes this much more useful for me, before this update I had to enter the info under the paddling workout (which Apple has not fully fleshed out) now it syncs directly into the Health app. Kayakers can use WaterspeedSailingWingWind to track their trail on the water as well save that data and map for future review and analysis.

Great app with room for improvement

Edit: Looks like the map bug was fixed in a recent update, so this is no longer an issue! Previous review below.

I use Waterspeed for recording sailing, and it’s so great to be able to start/stop recording from my watch and are course and speed over ground at a glance. I usually export a photo of the map using the Share feature to keep a log of my sails. However, if I go for longer distances, like a 30 nm sail from Marina Del Rey, CA to Catalina, the map at some point fails to zoom out enough to see the trip. I have a big trip planned for the British Virgin Islands soon, and I’d love to use Waterspeed to log it but can’t unless they fix that.

I also used to log sailing as a “workout,” but WaterspeedSailingWingWind somehow caused an inflation in my active calories (Apple’s tracking score) that was way out of line with the actual activity, so I turned that part off. Kinda wish I could use it, but it’s inaccuracy means I can’t.

This is a great app for watersports-like activity, especially for its Apple Watch integration, but it needs a little more work on long-distance travel.

Forced me to review

I was pretty happy with WaterspeedSailingWingWind . Then after my 5th use it would not give me the option of reviewing my paddle. Instead I was forced to go to a page where I was informed about the Pro version and forced to click on a “Restore” button. The description said nothing about what that means to “restore” does it mean I have to sign in and upgrade to Pro version or restore functionality? Then I clicked on a “rate my app” section with no way to exit but to rate WaterspeedSailingWingWind , here I am. I don’t know enough about WaterspeedSailingWingWind to comment, it seems promising, I do know it uses strong arm tactics to bend it to your will. Twice. So here is my rating under duress. When I figure out how to exit this forced review. I am hitting delete.

Best Sea Kayaking, Sailing app for Apple Watch

Have used WaterspeedSailingWingWind for bareboat sailing where it was more reliable than the nav on the boat we rented and recorded our sails for review when we got home. Simple, clear watch interface with key data. Able to be sure some of our junior sailors were on course even when I was not at the helm.

Am also an avid sea kayaker and the interface is much better than the standard fitness app on the watch for kayaking. Does not require the phone on my series 5 watch and is totally reliable for my daily paddles. I have looked at numerous apps and platforms, but find this the best.

Great sailing App for forecast, start countdown and path recording

I teach sailing and race Snipe and Laser sailboats the iPhone version provide a lot of great info In larger easy to read text.
Even the Apple Watch version provides sailing info I like for forecast, start countdown and tracking. you can review on iPhone and iPad after the races to see speed, Heart rate, at each point along the path you sailed. Check out the pro version to get the better features, it is a fair price for what it does.
If you are on a keel boat use iPhone or iPad instead of the watch.

Great new additional feature

This a great app for me. As a small boat sailor, the new “123” feature (bottom right corner) is the best part. Tap it, and the screen shows heading, speed, and elapsed time in big bold numbers. I can stick my phone at the front of the cockpit and the whole crew can see this vital info. With no expensive equipment installed, no wires to run, and no holes drilled in my boat. Awesome! Then at the end of the sail, we’re can switch back to map view and analyze our track. Cool app all around.

Best Apple app for speedsurfing

Finally there is an app offering some of the features needed for speed windsurfing. My GW 60 watches only last for about a year and don’t offer anything but the top results for recording speed sessions. With WaterspeedSailingWingWind, I’ve finally decided to upgrade to an Apple watch 4 cell so I will also have the ability to call for help if something goes wrong. I am really encouraged that these guys are constantly improving WaterspeedSailingWingWind and am hoping for a max alpha 500m in the future as that is what I’m working on at improving the most these days. Lots of potential.

Great app for the windsurfer

I’ve been using Waterspeed for the last 2 years to track speed and progress during amateur windsurfing sessions. I recently purchased the pro version that I really like. I had an minor Apple Watch sync issue last week. I got in touch with support and got instant answer. A few days later, the issue was fixed. Great app, superb support. It is actually worth every penny!

Best “Wet Work” app

This one is the one to get, I spend a chunk of time in nature between: kayaking, hiking, hunting, etc; I needed and app that could give me: wind speeds, tides (Oregon coast), accurately track my location even when I don’t have service and especially SYNC TO APPLE ACTIVITY (so my better half never beats me in our fitness competitions)! This is a good reliable app and after one use I paid for “pro” and am not disappointed!

Fantastic for Sailors

After using the free version for quite sometime, I upgraded to Pro, really glad I took the leap. WaterspeedSailingWingWind is terrific for tracking everything from day sails and practices to races. Great visualization of data. It’s been helpful to review the data with the race team back at the dock. I also use WaterspeedSailingWingWind as my Sailing Log. Customer support is absolutely A1.

Very accurate

This is a fun app to use. I’m a casual inland lake sailor. Seeing your speed over ground is helpful when adjusting sail trim and heading.

The Diary is extremely interesting. I reviewed the diary after flying my asymmetrical spinnaker. The speed slider indicated the exact spot where I raised the sock. Our speed went from 1.3 knots to 5.1 almost instantly.

The developer is highly responsive to emails. Pretty amazing since he and I live 9 time zones apart!

Great app and support!

Excellent support. I was having trouble with WaterspeedSailingWingWind on my Apple Watch, and members of the Waterspeed team were incredible. They responded to my emails very quickly and even sent follow up emails when I hadn’t responded back. After updating my watch and re-pairing it to my phone, the watch app worked. It ended up being a problem with my watch rather than WaterspeedSailingWingWind .
