I set an appointment for installation set my current Wi-Fi to cancel the day of… the Google team never showed up or contacted. Later that day I had to reach out. I found out they had cancelled my appointment. And won’t install for a couple more weeks. Without a definite date of installation. Be careful when planning with these guys. Hope the internet itself is worth it.
Google fiber sent out Google fiber technicians to my home just to tell me what the customer support line already told us( they gone have to splice the wire on the fiber jack) so I had to make another appointment at 1:00 today aug 9th he came around 10:30, he went to the fiber jack opened it up in said the exact thing the other technician said in told me I gotta make another appointment tmo to see another technician so he can do the same thing the other technicians supposed to have did today wow… mean while my wife gets fired from her job cause she works from home in can’t work smh… I’m going to spectrum, google fiber caused enough pain for me in my family. #theydontcare
We just switched to google fiber from AT&T, while I love the internet, I’m disappointed in GFiber . AT&T app allowed me to set profiles with times internet could be used in that profile. I could block or turn off individual devices. I could also set priority usage to certain devices. With a house full of kids and working from home, these were so handy. I hope google will do something similar with their app.
GFiber is extremely limited in functionality, especially for someone transitioning from Xfinity. It’s frustratingly slow, doesn’t save custom device names, and lacks essential features like blocking or pausing devices, creating profiles, or setting custom rules (e.g., no service during certain days or hours). Parental controls are virtually non-existent.
While the affordability and better customer service are positives, the lack of basic app features makes the experience disappointing. If not for those two factors, I would have switched back to Xfinity.
Let me preface this review by saying Google Fiber is an excellent service. But the service is more than the fast speeds, it’s how you interact with it.
The this app app has been unable to work with my service since day 3 when I turned on Bridge Mode ( to allow use of your own router)
Long story short here are some stats:
27: number of days GFiber has not worked to do anything except check the ONT
3: number of changeouts we have done with routers and mesh extenders
3: truck rolls to my home to try and fix the problem
7: combined calls, chats to care or visits to this app space in KC.
3: escalations
0: resolutions.
4: app deletion/re-installs
While I have service, it’s not performing and GFiber is the weak link.
Please fix it.
The best feature is the Restart function - the Google network box is the weakest link in Google's lousy internet service - we have to reboot our service at least daily if we want Internet. Google's been unable to correct the problem, so GFiber is handy for restarting the network box with Google's continual Internet service failures and when the TV boxes freeze. Didn't have this capability with TWC/Spectrum, but then again, they could provision reliable Internet service.
I used to use GFiber all the time and found it very useful. Now, after the last update, it is useless and is broken. I am stuck on the check availability and switch account screen which I can never get passed. I even contacted Google Fiber support and their only answers were to power cycle my phone or uninstall and reinstall GFiber . Both things I had already tried. At least the web version works…for now.
I had the regular 1 gig and was able to do much more with that router. Setup parental controls, schedules etc.
then I upgraded to 2gigs thinking I was getting an even better setup. Little did I know that you can literally do NOTHING useful! Can’t even serialize the names of the devices connected to the network. Can’t setup any parental controls or schedules at all. It is genuinely so terrible I think I’m going to go back to 1gig and pay less and have significantly better control of my network.
Really disappointing.
Latest version notes should read:
“With this update we have made GFiber again do something other than take up space on your phone.” lol
OG Review:
Google Fiber internet is fast and good, when it works… but that’s for another review. GFiber is currently useless as it doesn’t detect I’m connected to a Google Fiber network and only shows options for signing up for service or checking availability.
The internet I get is fast and good quality. However, BEWARE YOU APPARENTLY CANNOT CHANGE YOUR DRAFT DATE EVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES
I tried to reschedule my payment from the 13th to the 16th because of when my paychecks land and I was told that was not possible and it never would be. You can never delay, temporarily reschedule, or permanently reschedule payment dates under any circumstances. They are absolutely inflexible.
Now, after selling us on a flat rate, they are adding a 2% fee, which is not much, but it entirely disrupts the idea they sold their selves on.
If you know even just the basics about network security and like having control over it, you won’t like what Google Fiber has to offer. No VPA3 support, no option to restrict access, unable to read network device name (in some cases, not others), so you have to identify them by their MAC address, and no ability to label them in GFiber . There’s also no basic function of refreshing the list of connected devices without closing GFiber . The web app isn’t much better. I’m disappointed.
With my Orbi router and app I can rename devices to easily identify them, such as “Mom’s iPhone.” The this app app uses the MAC address to identify devices and you cannot change the display name. Also, no way to pause or block internet access per devices. No grouping of devices so that I can prevent access for “Timmy” or “The Playroom”. I may unplug the Google router and use the Orbi instead.
On Google home app you can rename, remove, prioritize, etc devices, but the Google fiber app doesn’t provide any of that functionality and the Google fiber routers don’t work with Google home app. GFiber says you can change the name of devices but when you save, nothing changes.
For being such a flag ship service and app it’s shocking you can’t use their routers with the Google home app and the Google fiber app doesn’t offer basic features that every other router offers.
Once upon a time, Google Fiber was new and I lived in one of the pilot cities. It was so much better than the crappy Time Warner. The service was fast, customer service was knowledgeable and could often fix any issues remotely. I never worried about slow speeds or outages.
Fast forward to late 2022, and it is as if The service us being run by Cox or Spectrum (Time Warner’s new alias). Spotty connection, slower speeds, underwhelmingly basic tech support and God forbid they need to send a tech…it takes days. Sounds disturbing familiar doesn’t it?
In closing, I agree with the common theory that when they started offering the higher speed package, they sent a sneaky update to all devices to throttle our service in an effort to get us to upgrade from $70 to $100 per month just to regain what we already had.
I want to be able to rename all of the WiFi devices that are using my router. I have over 30 devices including smart speakers, cameras, tvs, etc. and the default name for all of them are very cryptic. Not able to rename all those devices. also makes it hard for me to see if someone is logged into my WiFi without me knowing it.
Just being able to rename the router doesn’t get it.
GFiber generally works well. My main issue, is I cannot upgrade my plan to a faster speed with my own equipment. It wants to force a service call to install new equipment that are not needed. My equipment is the faster WiFi 7 and quad band. Also my fiber jacket support all levels of speed offered. I have a BUG submitted with this app support, but I cannot upgrade my account until they fix the issue for those who use their own equipment.
I have found GFiber slick and easy to use. It needs a few extra features to be perfect....like monitoring who's on it, and being able to boot people.
GFiber has everything I need. I love that they make it so easy to take a network speed test whenever you want. I now find myself testing my speeds on other wifi networks I use.
The manage my bill portion is PERFECT. Literally, there is no loner a need to use a website for the full account stuff. The full account was built from GFiber up. It's great.
I love GFiber because it's very accessible with voiceover. I can easily pay my bill, change my account settings, and update any information that needs to be updated as necessary with GFiber. As a visually impaired user, accessibility is very important to me, and it's nice to know that Google Fiber caters to each of their customers individual needs. Thank you Google Fiber for making such an accessible app that allows visually impaired customers to maintain and conduct their business with you.
I can't think of one thing that would make GFiber any better than it is. Instantly see the status of your network, wi-fi password, or reset your network box. One tap to perform a speed test? Yup. Account info and billing changes- just as easy. Best internet service with the most useful utility app ever. If only everything else was this easy!!
