Really mixed feelings but overall it’s a 1 star experience.

I’ve been a collector in the world of horology for the last 10 years and the first name in watch publication that’s commonly spoke when it comes to education on the subject matter is this app. Although I do really appreciate the content that’s put on this publication as it tends to be very interesting and easy to understand I cannot help but notice something odd about the site. Much like Twitter or other organization these days they tend to heavily sensor what is being posted as far as discussion and anything that disagrees with their opinion tends to fall under their famous “auto moderation”. I am not the only one that have taken note of this feature which silences harsh opinion and in some cases even more mundane comment but I find it a bit terrifying they do anything of the sort. They have gotten a ton of backlash as far as their moderation and essentially controlling of thoughts that differ from theirs and therefore despite a lot of great usability in their app and alright subject matter I cannot give it greater than 1 star.

They killed Watchville

Watchville was amazing. It contained multiple sources and voices from across the wristwatch industry, not just this app’s haughty, self-serving and highly conflicted content. Then this app bought and killed it, the anticompetitive arrh0l3s. Now that this app (what a dumb word, tbh) is pivoting into becoming a “lifestyle brand” (lol) there wasn’t even a need to kill Watchville.
Anyway, this app has created a lot of good content and coverage over the years but I can’t say I feel right about supporting them any longer. There’s something blatantly unethical and gross about them now. Or maybe it was always there and I was just naive.

It’s Just A Bunch Of Advertorial

No longer for the watch enthusiast, this app is now just a marketing platform for ads disguised as “articles” about watches. Everything is a plug, and gone are the thoughts including criticisms that a passionate watch collector might think of.

PS- minus one more star for Hodinkee trying to force a watch dial other than what I choose on me each and every time I open Hodinkee . I like the classic and I don’t give a mouse’s behind whatever special watch dial you all are trying to promote, again, as marketing. Leave it alone.

No new watch face? Why so complicated?

The only thing you can “change” is from quartz to automatic, should be able to swipe left or right for new high res watch faces. This new face is so busy I don’t even want to use it anymore. Why destroy something that was perfectly functional? Some of us use Hodinkee for time keeping. I don’t want to download a new app, just fix this please. I can’t believe I even have to say this? Supposed to be a one stop shop for watch enthusiasts but you can’t even use this function. Idk this is just a very poor experience

A very greedy bunch! Crooks some may say...

These guys went from writing informative reviews to pushing the products they sell.
If that was not enough, they started over-moderating the comment section for articles, and finally they discontinued Watchville, Hodinkee they created that aggregated news from several other watch sites.
Even more troubling is the way they help auction houses hype up some “iconic” watches to inflate their prices. The latest -and so far most egregious- is that of the Daytona “Unicorn”, uncovered by Perezcope.
Not only that watch was a “Frankenwatch”, but also not all of the proceeds went to charity as advertised. Shame on Bacs, Montanari & Clymer.

Farewell Hodinkee!

So for this app to stop supporting Watchville wasn’t enough. Now they won’t even let people use it, covering Hodinkee with that this app screen. That is nasty way to motivate users, on par with such great ‘motivators’ as ussr communist party and certain people from germany in first half of 20th century.
Do not know which “genius” came up with the idea of pushing users like herd animals while working in the field of luxury mechanical watches in the age of iphones and apple watches, but to me looks like that person is in the wrong field doing wrong job.
Farewell this app, that is very bad of you, so not only I stop using or visiting any of you resources, I’d also block them wherever I can. That is, I cancel you and advice any real watch lovers to do the same. Plenty of resources where one can read the same stories and the same press releases.

“Tool” replaced by insurance

I use the clock “tool” in Hodinkee frequently to set my watches, so its placement in the bottom navigation was great; close to where your fingers are and accessible from any screen in Hodinkee . And it was just a fun timepiece featured prominently in an app celebrating timepieces.

This “tool” I used multiples times a week has been replaced by “insurance,” which I will use never. My assumption is the overwhelming majority of your users will set their beloved watches from time to time, but a vanishingly small percentage will buy insurance. That’s you choosing advertising over usability, and that’s a shame.

The clock is still there in the upper corner, but it’s now harder to reach, not available on every screen, and breaks muscle memory. I don’t mind you selling insurance, but it’s sad that this business push has literally replaced a useful tool and a fun celebration of why we love watches.

Poor substitute for Watchville app

While I like some this app articles, not being able to read from various Watch publications (Fratello and others) in this “replacement” for the old Watchville app is a step backwards.

Oh well, the All Watch New app seems to be a decent replacement for Watchville. Folks, check them out if you miss Watchville for its aggregator of watch news.

Excellent

I love this app. The articles, the photography, the podcasts, the videos... It is all high quality content. The 5th star is missing, however, because of the lacking features for account personalization. Hodinkee has a section for my watch wishlist, but it is simply one blank canvas for me to write reference numbers without pictures or linked pages. A folder of detailed notes would be much more useful/entertaining to keep updated. It would be cool to see data on which watches are on other people’s wish lists too. I also wish I could make “favorites” section where I could save my favorite this app content for later viewing.

My constructive feedback

Hodinkee is really good. One thing that I think would be a big opportunity would be the interactiveness between users. For instance, one cannot click the author of an articles’ icon and look at their watch profile and comments. This has to be done within the comment section. Also, one cannot search for a user to see what watches they uploaded within Hodinkee , so say I want to see what watches or articles this app Columnist A or B is reading/commenting on or collecting, it makes it difficult to look through old articles comment section instead of searching.

Also, maybe some sort of pinned feature for articles that the user recommends from their profile would be cool.

Great watch app

This is a great app but what I loved most about it was that the this app clock stayed on in the iPhone Lock Screen so you can use it like a bed side clock. Then last week they updated it and poof it went away. The best feature ever and F Apple for not releasing this functionality until iPhone 14 which I don’t have. I’m sure Apple strongarmed this app. Grrrrr

Watch this app!!

This is a very well designed app that is adept at presenting this app’s web content in a clear and easy-to-read manner. If you are interested in watches, there is no better source of news and insightful watch information ... from new releases to vintage pieces to the watch industry developments. The content authors are very well versed, and the articles is extremely well written. Their shop is also an interesting place to discover high quality watches (albeit from only select brands) plus accessories.

I’ve been reading this app since 2012 or 13. I look at Hodinkee all day long and I absolutely love it. I still watch the original Talking Watches episodes. I have to say though, I miss the old crew! But the new generation is doing a great job as well. Bring back the podcast but it would be nice if it was Ben who hosted and interviewed some of the older talking watches guests. I miss the old days of this app. But don’t get me wrong, I still love it! Keep at it!

Excellent context, store questionable.

this app has the best content. Frequent articles that deep dive in rare corners of watch making history and innovation. I love it. The store is questionable. I have purchased two watches. Both were shipped after 3-4 business days and were not overnighted. The second watch was purchased on a Sunday purchase. On Wednesday, I inquired if the watch was in this app’s possession and promptly received a notification the watch is now “shipped.”

Team HODINKEE

Great website with amazing content! The staff is extremely down to earth and very relatable. As a watch enthusiast who has been in love with watches since my Dad gifted my first Casio in 1988ish this forum is a dream come true. My consumer philosophy would never allow me to jump into the 15K and beyond for a a single purchase but it’s the art, design, quality, and engineering that makes me invest my time. I tip my hat to Ben and company for their continued success!

Well executed escapism

What a great app when I just need to escape into the world of horology. Hodinkee is beautiful in presentation and furthermore it's the kind of immersive environment I can spend either five minutes in or a few hours when time allows. I highly enjoy this app and even if you only have a passing interest in horology or yearn to ogle a grail watch; take a look.

What a beautiful horological app

Hodinkee has amazing and extremely detailed pictures! Many other industries should take note of this. Furthermore, the incredible team at this app curates the vastest collection of comprehensive horological articles and videos from the very best and brightest in the industry. I love the quality and ease of use of the this app shop, from non horological accessories to finding the perfect strap for your watch or snagging a cool, genuine, and patinated watch from the yesteryears. I love your simplicity and impeccable attention to detail within Hodinkee.

Love the app.

Love it! But Product — please listen to design and prioritize dark mode. I know they’ve been asking. We all have. If you need a user story, I have it:
As a user, I need dark mode so I can shop late at night without waking up my wife with the solar flare coming from my screen. Please.

A product designer who’s a huge watch geek

HODINKEE The love of watches

The this app app is an app for watch lovers, of course, but has many features. this app is doing a great job on updating the shop and helping watch lovers know what’s a happening. If you don't know much about watches Hodinkee isn’t for you, yet, as I recommend you study before you download to truly enjoy it.

Great site

this app is truly the premier watch infotainment and buying site on the web. I am always incredibly impressed by its scholarship, entertainment (read- outright fun) and deals-particularly on hard to find pieces. It is a cornerstone of my watch enthusiasm! Keep up the great work this app!!!
