Useless. Always logs you out

Useless app. Always logs you out and since signing back in is such a pain, there's no point of using OpalTravel.

App is terrible

I’ve tried at least 20 times to search a simple trip and app crashes every single time. It’s completely useless.

Top Up Takes Time

I have topped up with my overseas card and it cancelled but I didn’t get my refund yet. $100 was the amount. I contacted in Sydney Central Opal booth and they said it will take 3 days to get the refund. I will wait 3 days. And if I don’t get my money back I will take steps.

After getting cancelled I have topped up from the booth in person with my local card, still I can’t see my topped up amount in Opal app.

Archaic App

Utter crap. Trip planner is useless. Way better on chrome.

Forces me to update

Minor UI changes ? And I cannot use OpalTravel without updating it ? why

fix your issues please

i cant even top up my card multiple times despite deleting and downloading it again. also my friend topped up her card with $60 yet in OpalTravel it appeared 6$

Session ends too often

Why do i have to login every pretty much 1hr to check my left over amount. Please let us keep the login

Lacks custom options

Lacks many of the Options available on the website’s Trip Planner. I’m dumping it from my iPhone. I still get better info from the TransportNSW Trip Planner via Safari. Had high hopes, dashed.

Bug fix

Isn't really a bug fix, more a removal of the wording "Free travel" and changed to "Reward" how about you call it was it is instead of hiding behind the over used App Store term "Bug Fix" consumers are adult enough to understand why and what needed to be done, just stop being lazy and tell us what you're doing!

App is stuck in some weird “less walking” setting

For some reason OpalTravel has started only showing me directions that minimize walking. So now if I’m trying to check timetables for my usual commute, which was usually a ferry + 30 mins walking or a bus + 20 mins walking, it’s now only showing routes that involve 5 mins or less of walking. There seems to be no place in OpalTravel to change this preference and it’s basically useless to get directions that add 30 minutes to my commute and three extra transport methods just to shave 20 mins off a walk. Super frustrating!

What is the point of this app?

Bemusing at best for 2025. You cannot use your iPhone as your Opal card (???). OpalTravel ’s trip planner can’t find nearby stations nor match a partial station name. Google Maps does this trivially. All I’ve been able to do is register an Opal card, and hope that if I ever lose it then I can actually use OpalTravel to transfer the balance to a new physical card. Bonkers.

Freezes about 75% of the time

OpalTravel is mostly intuitive, but rather unstable. Most of the time, it will freeze and must be closed and reopened, sometimes multiple times.

Scan options

Cannot scan the card using phone. Option is seen in other versions where any other card is scannable to know the balance.

Trip Planner needs work

Google maps does a better job of listing Opal route options than OpalTravel does. Unlike website search, OpalTravel doesn’t let you set route options. It always picks the “fastest” route, which is often just walking. For older folks who would prefer to ride despite taking longer, OpalTravel is useless. Ended up using Uber instead of the Opal service several times!

The programmers must be sadists

OpalTravel intentionally disables the ability to paste an opal card number when adding a new card. Too much focus on flash. Too little on ease of use.

App does not read card NFC? Please fix

Yes yes I know apple did not allow nfc read until recently, but this has changed with iOS 13. So no excuses, please fix this and add the card nfc read to OpalTravel .

Works well

travel planner quite helpful, overall pretty good

Good app but could you please add paypal?

Top up on OpalTravel is great bit could you please add paypal as an option? Thanks!

Opal

It would be awesome to be able to add the opal card to wallet to check the balance as other transportation apps.

When can you use Apple Pay?

I really hope one day I will be able to use my Opal Card registered instead of using Visa/Mastercard that doesn’t have Weekly Travel discount.
