Horrible Customer Service

I’m not one to write any reviews, but I was extremely disappointed in the customer service I received. I decided to give the app a go during an advertised 2 week trial. Upon immediately downloading the app, I was charged the full yearly membership without any preface. While sure, $87 is not a lot for a year of what looks like great workouts, I was not expecting to be charged without any agreement. I contacted their support email and received a default “we’ll get back to you in 24 hours.” Called Apple and had them refund me right after I received that email. Received my response from Zova 24 hours later basically saying that it was my fault that I was charged bc I probably had downloaded the app prior to this instance and that I should just call Apple for my refund. So yeah, no help whatsoever and I was to blame for automatic charges upon downloading the app. Thanks for the inconvenience. You should consider adding in an option that asks for customer approval before charging them. Or at least the option to pick a subscription plan.

Doesn’t utilize Health app data

I would love to give this app 5 stars, but I can’t. During set up it specifically asks for access to your Health app. The Health app is a central depository for numerous activities. I currently set workouts on my Apple Watch, then watch as it records time spent, calories burned and other activity. This is documented in the Health app and I can see a break down of my most active days and the data associated with it. My understanding of Zova was that it references this when calculating your weekly score. It does not do this. I can do numerous activities outside of Zova, see the progress I’m making, but because I’m not doing the specific Zova exercise in the app, my weekly Zova score drops. This creates the opposite effect the app is trying to instill. I see no progress being made because I jogged up a mountain and had my Watch capture the exercise data. After a week of alternating (Zova programs one day, independent Watch recorded data the next), my Watch had recorded all relevant data and I could reference my progress in both the Activity app and in the Health app, but Zova said it was my weakest week yet! 😂 It’s a bummer too cause the programs are good. Maybe when they integrate this correctly I’ll be willing to pay the sub, but right now it’s not worth the monthly fee.

Extremely effective with some downsides

Bad 1) freezes often and there’s no way to prompt the video to restart or unfreeze 2) as far as I can tell, if you accidentally skip (“fast forward” on the touch screen essentially) an exercise you can’t go back 3) the emphasis on calories minimizes variety. LOTS of big lower body work and no modifications offered. My knees are killing me by the end; I wish there was more true whole-body emphasis and fewer explosive movements. Enough with the pop squats! Good: 1)You work the whole time. Stretch and cool down are on your own, so the times you see reflect true “on” time 2) the trainer, Vix, is great. She keeps my form on track and gives excellent guidance. She’s the reason I’ve stuck with it despite having to modify on my own a lot. 3) I love that my main workouts are fed to me and I don’t have to poke around the app. Just press play. 4) The extra workouts are very good as add ons. If I found something structured this way with a trainer as good as Vix but with less lower body focus, I’d switch. As is it’s still a pretty good app.
