This was a great language tool until they combined all the languages into one app. Now it is difficult to know where to go and how to use it. Especially if you are learning more than one language. The sad thing is I not only paid for the full editions but extra material on top of it. And they claim you don’t lose the material you paid for but I cannot find it on this new app. I am fine as long as I can still use the old apps. They still work. I am concerned that in the future they no longer will. Especially when IOS 13 comes out this fall.

The drilling of phrases along with vocabulary is a more challenging and thus helpful feature. But the software is buggy, the interface is cumbersome and ugly, and the refusal to pronounce plurals is infuriating— they are so frequently irregular in German and it would take a split second for the readers to read them. So I spend a lot of time editing the cards, removing parentheses and useless HTML markup and opting for the computer voice and clicking through confirmation windows so that I can hear the plurals. Just baffling and a waste of time. But still I spend hours a day with the app for both German and Italian—the benefits, and the price, outweigh the irritations. Italian readers are so much better than the Germans—one woman sounds like she’s spitting into the mic while addressing a brain-damaged and deaf five year old.

I’m in the process of learning French, and this app has been a pleasure to use- and addictive! Learning a language is difficult enough but this app makes it fun and you get results. The handsfree mode flash cards are especially effective. I couldn’t build my vocabulary enough before. I failed to memorize enough words or phrases no matter what I did. This works! I was surprised to find that I can remember permanently words that I kept forgetting. Vocabulary building is essential. There are still some very minor mechanical glitches, but nothing to make be abandon Mosa. It’s been wonderful !
